CLP44 - Ecological Approach to Muay Thai Kickboxing w/ Emil Fitoussey

Closing the Distance

Today I'm joined by Emil Fitoussey, a professional Muay Thai coach out of Nacka Dojo in Sweden. Over the past year, Emil has transitioned his partially ecological Muay Thai program into a 100% ecological Muay Thai program. In this episode, he recounts his journey into Ecological Dynamics and the constraints-led approach. Then, we talk about how he builds the culture of his Muay Thai program to value the safety of sparring partners. Finally, we discuss several interesting practical topics, including:- Using external focus of attention to help learners self-organize striking techniques- How his use of thai pads has changed and how he uses them now- How he's changed his warmup from calisthenics-based to based on mini-games- How he helps day 1, brand new students control power output for safe sparring gamesThere's been a content desert for how to use the ecological approach to striking. Today, I'm happy to provide you with a substantial entry into what I hope will become a burgeoning community of coaches who collaborate on how to make this work for striking sports. I had incredible fun recording this series of episodes with Emil, and I'm extremely impressed with him and what he's done. Emil is a smart guy, but he's still a regular Muay Thai coach like most of you. It makes me confident most striking coaches can use CLA for their programs, too. It supports the show, and I truly appreciate it. --- If you're new to the show, please sign up to the Combat Learning Newsletter at combatlearning.com/newsletter. He leads teams on a broad range of projects that include illustration, web design, and brand development. Some of his clients include Netflix, Discovery+, Sambazon, Taco Bell, and Hyperice. As a lifelong learner, Daniel is passionate about mentoring emerging talent in the practice of design and illustration. In his personal life, Daniel is a coach of Muay Thai Kickboxing. He holds a BFA in Illustration from LCAD and teaches courses within the Graphic Design and Illustration departments, including Professional Practices and Adobe Illustrator. Daniel is an active member of AIGA.   Here's what we covered on the episode:   Daniels Young Start to Art + Building Relationships Daniel shares a childhood story of how his friend showed him that experimenting is what art is all about, which made him rethink his creative process  How Daniel's father owned a screen printing shop where he learned how to make t-shirts at a young age  Daniel graduated from college with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration, but as he started working, he got more graphic design work  In 2008, during the economic crash, Daniel had all his clients disappear, but at the time coached water polo and decided to make it the best-looking team as a case study The first extensive branding project Daniel did was for his water polo team, which helped them expand from 10 to 175 athletes  The story of how Daniel helped one of his past water polo athletes build his brand from the ground up  Helping people is part of Daniel's core values, and he says that Dyno Creative shares that - they're here to solve problems, build partnerships and help people grow into their greatest self  Daniel likes to start building relationships by asking people how he can help them; In the business, that equates to asking someone what their biggest pain point is  Instead of trying to sell yourself and your services, Daniel says it's more valuable to ask people what they are struggling with and what's challenging them  If you make friends, Daniel says, then there is bound to be someone who wants to help and support you in the same way you want to help and support them  Why it's important to get connected with people who are outside of your circle and industry to find out how they got where they are  As creatives, we struggle to apply our skills to ourselves   Daniel and I both talk about what we want to achieve in our businesses moving forward Getting Projects You Want Daniel and his team created a bunch of mock projects that they have on their website to show off the type of work they want to be doing At Dyno Creative, they do a lot of cold outreach, and Daniel shares how it works for them   Daniel explains it's important that if they aren't the expert in what a client is asking for, they connect them with someone they know who is an expert How Daniel and his team can send 1,000 cold emails each month through PersistIQ that helps with generating an email list of people who might need their services   Social media is like a billboard; Daniel asks how many times you have driven past a billboard and called the number on it - it's great for awareness, which is how Daniel uses it, but he likes other strategies like email and building genuine relationships best  In emails, Daniel likes to include results they've had for other clients and a clear CTA (call to action) so people can see how they could help them solve their problems too  Daniel shares the details of working on the artwork for the Tracy Morgan: Staying Alive film On streaming platforms, you might notice different key art pieces for different shows because they are testing which ones get the most clicks - this is how Daniel's illustration ended up being used for Tracy Morgan: Staying Alive   No matter what you're trying to improve in your business, it won't work unless you have a clear core message - the easiest way to find this, Daniel says, is to take away your product and see what your brand would be  Check out the Dyno Creative website and connect with them on Instagram, Dribble, or Pinterest    Links mentioned: Dyno Creative Website Dyno Creative on Instagram Dyno Creative on Dribble Dyno Creative on Pinterest    Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. On this 65th episode of The CEO Story, I have Bobby Waldron.  An athlete all of his life, Bobby began competing in wrestling at the age of four. His wrestling career found him winning many championships, setting records, and becoming an All-American wrestler in college. After missing the Olympic trials due to an injury, Waldron decided to pursue a career in personal training, using his college background in nutrition and physical education. He was a top trainer at Crunch Gym in New York City, working with high-end clientele. His time in NYC led to appearances on various talk and morning shows as a fitness expert. His morning show spots lead to national commercials for fitness brands such as Nike and Adidas, as well as on-air opportunities with QVC.He pivoted again, pursuing Muay Thai Kickboxing and martial arts. This passion for martial arts and competition led to Waldron's next career move as a stuntman in top Hollywood films and television such as Die Hard With A Vengeance, Six Degrees of Separation and Devils Rejects, Sons Of Anarchy, Outsiders, Banshee and First Kill.As a wrestler, Waldron was required to drop weight quickly and experimented with tons of creative measures for reaching his goal weight. One that had always worked and stood the test of time was wrapping the body with neoprene, causing the body's thermal core temperature to rise, resulting in an increased metabolic rate. He brought this secret into his professional training life having his client wear similar products around the waist and thus The Belly Burner was born. Putting all of his resources into The Belly Burner, Waldron launched an infomercial for the product in early 2008 and the product was an instant success. With weekly podcasts released, "The CEO Story" takes a deep dive into the success (and sometimes pitfalls) of being your own boss! Derek and Kieran offer a deep bow to the most excellent Roger Yuan.  Roger Yuan is a much sought-after talent who has worn many hats over the course of a film career that spans three decades. As an actor, Roger has gone toe-to-toe with Jackie Chan in SHANGHAI NOON, and with Michael Jai White in BLACK DYNAMITE.  His first major role was opposite Richard Gere in RED CORNER, and he also played the role of the “Master Monk” in BULLETPROOF MONK, starring Chow Yun Fat.  In addition, Roger has made cameos in international blockbusters like SKYFALL, SYRIANA and BATMAN BEGINS and alongside Keanu Reeves (JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3). Roger Yuan also has global appeal outside of “Hollywood” having starred in ONCE UPON A TIME IN VIETNAM (with Dustin Nguyen) and CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA (with Akshay Kumar), not to mention having also worked with Jet Li, and Sammo Hung in ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA AND AMERICA earlier in his career.  With such an acting resume, it's no surprise that legendary director Yuen Wo Ping personally selected Roger to play the role of “Iron Crow” in CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON 2: THE GREEN LEGEND. As a fight choreographer/action director, Roger has drawn from a lifetime of martial arts training in Chung Kuk Do, Kyokushinkai, Tai Chi, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Muay-Thai Kickboxing, Western Boxing, and Shaolin Chi Gung, as well as yoga and gymnastics while demonstrating an uncommon gift for creating realistic action sequences with flair and grace.  Recent credits include the upcoming DUNE (2020), JASON BOURNE, WARCRAFT, EAT LOCAL, and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, as Fight Coordinator, 47 RONIN, SKYFALL, as Fight Trainer/Choreographer. In recent years, Roger has garnered a reputation due to his unique approach to physical training.  This one-of-a-kind philosophy has cast him as a bit of philosophical fitness guru, and has added a new facet to his already busy career.  It started when in preparation for THE IMMORTALS, actor Henry Cavill came to Roger for help.  Henry wanted to enhance his aesthetic physical look and his martial arts abilities.  In short, Henry wanted to be able to move like Roger.  So, Roger took Henry on a physical journey that prepared him for his role as the Greek Hero, Theseus, which led to stints training Jason Flemyng and Jennifer Lawrence (X MEN: FIRST CLASS), and Daniel Craig (SKYFALL), and most recently, Travis Fimmel and Paula Patton (WARCRAFT)

#7 Cory Hastings on Martial Arts, the Pursuit of Purpose, and Head Traumas

I first showed up at the dojo of Hastings Martial Arts looking for a Karate class. A beginner one was not available at that moment, but Sensei Cory Hastings invited me to join a Jujitsu class that was starting in 15 minutes. So I did. Both Jujitsu and Sensei Cory were exactly what I needed in my life at that time, and now Cory also teaches karate to me and my 2 children. In this episode, Cory and I peel back the layers of his knowledge of martial arts: from Karate and Jujitsu to Muay Thai and Japanese archery. We talk about his persistent drive to perfect his craft, and how that drive led him to give up a lucrative job in pursuit of his heart's yearning. Cory also shares many of the life lessons that he has gleaned from his teachers and martial arts and how he carries forward in his dojo the legacy of the respectful, holistic martial artists. Cory began his martial arts training 30 years ago in the same dojo that he only recently left to create his own dojo. He currently holds the rank of 4th degree Black Belt in both Shotokan Karate and Daiwa Ryu Aiki Jujitsu. Cory has also trained Muay Thai Kickboxing in Thailand and won the Canadian Muay Thai Association Super Middleweight British Columbia Title in 2011. Cory likely could have gone on to win other championships, but, as he shares, both he and his sensei were cognizant of the head injuries he had already sustained and how future fighting could have precipitated more injuries. As a husband and father of 2 children, the steward of his family farm in North Saanich on Vancouver Island, and a sensei who is benefitting his community, this is a risk Cory could not justify. It is true that Sensei Cory is the only sensei my kids and I have ever had, yet experience and intuition tells me we could not have found a better teacher for us. I hope you enjoy this episode with Cory Hastings. How wrestling is the kink you have been missing

Kink Craft

It truly is a thrilling job like no other. I get paid to beat up men, while they enjoy every last second of it - it really is as good as it sounds! For people not into the scene it might sound a little odd, but men with a fetish for wrestling fit gorgeous girls hire me - and other women like me - to fulfil their fantasies. It’s fun, it’s sexy, it’s great for keeping fit, it’s exciting and can be competitive. Wrestling is a kink of sorts and I think men wrestle women because they enjoy the physicality and closeness it brings. It’s sensual without being sexual. It’s also cathartic - a release from their day to day lives. And they get to feel the raw power that women possess, dispelling the myth we are the weaker sex! The UK session wrestling scene There are dozens of ladies on the books of companies across Britain and the scene is much bigger than most people would imagine. In London alone, there are several wrestling businesses and the girls are doing well which tells you that the demand and talent to satisfy it is out there. Recent expose in mainstream media has certainly helped raise the profile. The quality and diversity of the wrestlers keeps on improving too which makes the scene a very attractive place to be. Guys are fortunate here too as most of the companies put on live shows which gives them the chance to see girls wrestle each other competitively before getting to sample the delights of the women through ‘mini-sessions’. For the guys, these are great, affordable ways to experience what different girls have to offer. Regular filming takes place for a number of clip stores that gives people the opportunity to see wrestlers - male and female - in action on the mats via the click of a mouse. It’s a safe, thriving and thrilling scene full of professional and responsible women determined to provide men with every opportunities to satisfy their deepest desires. How I got into wrestling The thrill of competition is what brought me into it in the first place 10 years ago. I’ve been a martial artist since I was a child and I’m trained in a number of styles such as Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, Muay Thai Kickboxing. I met a model on a shoot who mentioned she was a session wrestler and that peaked my interest. I wanted to learn a new combat sport and asked her to show me the ropes and it took off from there. I started training, learning the moves and enhancing my skills with each and every match. And of course, I loved doing sessions with men and earning a living from it! I’ve never looked back. I’m a freelance wrestler - on the books of some companies or guesting at other venues either for sessions, filming or appearing at shows. But every girl is different. It’s not essential to have a background in combat sports before you start wrestling. Many girls do but there are plenty of others who had no experience of fighting beforehand but have gone on to become household names in the scene. I, myself, had a martial arts background but no real ground fighting skills. The key is a willingness to learn as well as having fun. Get that right and you can develop and make a name for yourself. Sessions with me Most requests I get from men are for semi-competitive wrestling sessions, which involve skill and strength but with a huge emphasis on fun and more than a little trash talking! Sometimes I do get a guy who is strong, experienced and a talented wrestler which makes the session fully competitive and more intense. I also get creative, depending on what a guy is into. For example, I offer foot domination sessions where submissions are earned by using your feet. Others might want more smothers or pins or even beat down style moves used so I accommodate as best I can. Clothing is important too. Some guys will want me to wear certain things be it bikinis, one-pieces, fishnet tights etc and if it’s in my wardrobe then I’m happy to accommodate. And if it isn’t in my wardrobe, they are more than welcome to buy it for me! But the crucial thing is they have a great time and get what they wanted out of it - after all, they are paying! I charge £175 per session (the average cost in London is around £150) including a mandatory deposit. How sessions tend to go are that I turn up, check the venue and ensure the mats are clean and facilities such as showers are working, ensure there are towels and then - when the client arrives - talk through what they want and what their levels are before we get on the mats and have immense fun! I am grateful, flattered and delighted for the positive feedback I get and am fortunate to have regular clients. They tell me I’m skilful, flexible, beautiful and unique, which is lovely to hear. What it’s like to wrestle men and women I have always wrestled both men and women. Both bring different challenges but both are amazing fun.For the men, it’s a turn-on. They’re not usually out to play hard and compete with sheer intensity. It’s a joy for me to make them submit through my range of bendy and flexible moves while they get a total thrill out of the experience. Women tend to be more skilful and flexible than men and this in turn makes matches more competitive. There is less of the kink element in most of my matches with the girls although I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy rolling around with some of the beauties in our scene! I thoroughly enjoy wrestling both men and women as both excite me in different ways while also giving me two different types of work out. Getting involved For anyone starting out or thinking of getting involved, the main thing is having a desire to listen and learn. Training and regular sessions will help you develop. It is also important to promote themselves on wrestling websites such as WB270 or Session Girls, as well as their own sites and social media. But always remember to have fun and enjoy it. If you’re not enjoying it, then you are definitely doing it all wrong!
