In this episode of The Chad & Cheese Podcast, Jeff Taylor, the nutty professor behind Monster.com, crashes the mic to dish on job boards, entrepreneurial chaos, and why the hiring game's more bonkers than a squirrel on espresso. He takes us on a nostalgia trip through Monster's heyday, chuckling at how Indeed swooped in like a job-posting ninja and the LinkedIn deal hit like a plot twist in a bad rom-com—spoiler: LinkedIn won. Taylor's saga is a hoot: from birthing Monster, to getting a decade-long MBA beatdown from Ray Dalio at Bridgewater (think Wall Street with extra yelling), to now pimping his new gig, BoomBand, which promises to rescue resumes and job postings from the stone age—because who needs parchment scrolls in 2025? He cracks up over flops like Eons—“Facebook handed me my lunch”—and slings zingers like “Jeff Taylor is back, bitches,” while preaching that job seekers are the real MVPs, job boards are deader than disco, and keeping market share is like wrestling a greased pig. With a gleam in his eye, he's hell-bent on jazzing up resumes to strut past, present, and future vibes, proving that thriving in this HR tech madhouse means diving headfirst into the crazy—and maybe dodging a few industry punches along the way. In today's episode: It's growing increasingly common for companies to put up "ghost job" postings that they never intend to hire for. This is for three main reasons: to signal strength (look how many people we're hiring!), to interview employees from competitors, and to strike some fear into current employees. It's a great short-term motivator and a terrible long-term plan. Ever been snookered by a fake job? I mean, if you know you have? You might have been hoodwinked and didn't even know it. Perhaps you applied and silence. I glanced over a survey from Resume Builder very recently (not a site I recommend, but they ran the survey so what the hey?). A few key findings... 40% of companies posted a fake job listing this year. 30% of companies currently have active fake listings. 70% of hiring managers believe posting fake jobs is morally acceptable. Their rationale… Hiring managers say fake job postings led to boosted revenue, morale, and productivity and alleviate employee workload concerns. They indicate “company growth” as one of the top reasons behind fake job posting strategy. Sure. So, you know these fakers are out there. Now, how can you spot them and what can you do about it? Accenture research reveals demand for AI professionals grows as Ireland sees surge in technology job posting

The demand for workers with Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills is growing as new research from Accenture finds promising indicators of economic recovery, particularly in the technology sector, post-pandemic. Ireland has experienced a significant surge in technology job postings, with a strong 16.3% increase observed over the past six months. The latest Talent Tracker research from Accenture, which analyses data from LinkedIn's Professional Network, assesses the skills of existing professionals and skills required by organisations across the country. The most recent study found a significant growth in demand for emerging technologies including data, AI, and cloud. The demand falls in line with the availability of these skills in Ireland, with AI, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics collectively constituting eight in 10 (79.6%) of Ireland's overall technology talent pool. Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) account for nearly 41.9% of Ireland's total technology talent pool. Further findings from Accenture's research revealed: There is a major 142% increase in demand for professionals in the field of AI followed by data analytics (36%) and cloud computing (21%). 68% of the job openings advertised by companies across Ireland are concentrated in 8 major hubs that the research looked at. This figure represents an 11% decrease from approximately 79% six months ago. Dublin accounts for a substantial 63.2% of the country's overall technology workforce, marking a rise from 59% in the previous six-month period. Audrey O'Mahony, Managing Director and Head of Talent & Organisation at Accenture in Ireland, commented: "It's encouraging to observe a notable rise in the jobs posted across the country, especially in the emerging technology sectors. This is likely driven by a combination of factors including increasing demand for skills in areas including AI, cloud computing, and data analytics, the rise in remote work, and the general acceleration of digital transformation efforts to stay competitive. "The demand for AI professionals has increased by 142%, as businesses recognise that AI can provide a significant competitive edge and seek to hire people with those skills. As we consider the impact that generative AI, in particular, will have on the workplace, it's imperative that businesses are not only hiring for those skills but they are also equipping their existing employees with generative AI knowledge. Those who double down on building the trust of their workforce and reskilling at scale will be the ones to reap the rewards of this change." Developed by Accenture Research, Accenture's Ireland Tech Talent Tracker queried emerging technology and sustainability keywords on the LinkedIn Professional Network between 25th March to 4th April 2024. The tracker assesses skills of both existing roles and open positions, querying for nine skills areas: artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cyber security, data analytics, data ethics and responsibility, extended reality, quantum computing, robotics, and sustainability. The research covered all of Ireland, with a focus on the following counties: Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Limerick, Waterford, Westmeath and Sligo.

Wildlife Career Salaries: The Hidden Costs Behind Job Postings

Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World

On the surface, it seems like careers in wildlife are pretty financially solid. If you search online for how much wildlife biologists make, you'll discover it's about $70K here in the US. In fact, when I discovered wildlife biology as a career option, I was incredibly relieved to see a solid salary posted! I was previously pursuing a career in acting, which is notorious for having low salaries, lots of unpaid work, uncertainty, and risk. But after 20 years of being in this field working in internships, going to graduate school, postdocing, and then applying for permanent jobs, I realized there are many parallels to theater and wildlife careers, and there's more to that $70K salary than it seems. In fact, when I was applying to jobs, most of the jobs I was competitive for had salaries around the $50-$55K range even with having a Ph.D. and having been in the field for 15 years. So what gives? Why is there such a disparity? In this episode of the Fancy Scientist podcast, I talk about just that: what goes into getting that $70K salary and what jobs are most likely to lead you there. I'm pulling back the curtain on what it REALLY takes to make it in wildlife careers, and trust me, it's not what your college career counselor told you or what you read on the Internet. I talk about how it's incredibly difficult to generalize careers in wildlife and that you have to be careful of the images you see and the information you read - as it often doesn't apply to most wildlife careers!Remember that shiny $70,600 median salary figure from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics? Well, I hate to break it to you, but it's about as realistic as expecting to cuddle pandas on your first day on the job.If you're someone who's been applying for wildlife job after wildlife job, but hearing nothing back, you're about to GET the truth about our field that no one else is talking about. But don't worry, I'm not here to crush your dreams. I 100% believe that you can do this! And to make that happen, you need a realistic understanding of what these careers in wildlife are like so that you can prepare. I'm here to arm you with the knowledge you need to beat the system and thrive in this amazing field. Using my own experiences and those of colleagues, I paint a realistic picture of what aspiring wildlife biologists can expect in this competitive field.By the time you finish this episode, you'll understand the hidden factors that go into getting a $70K salary, what kinds of jobs are more likely to be lucrative, and how some jobs may never pay that much. So, if you're ready to start taking charge of your career and become the successful wildlife professional that you know you are deep down inside, this episode is for you. Specifically, I go over:Why the $70,600 median salary figure from the US Bureau of Statistics is misleading and what goes into making that figureThe experience paradox: why you can't get a job without experience, and can't get experience without a jobThe truth about temporary and seasonal positions in wildlife biologyHow your education level impacts your job prospects and salary potentialCommon misconceptions about wildlife biology work (spoiler alert: it's way more than fieldwork and cute animals!)The crucial importance of data analysis skills in modern wildlife careersPractical tips for preparing for a successful career in wildlife biologyThe realities of fieldwork vs. lab work in wildlife biology careersAnd more!!!I'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist.
