Welcome to part 2 of my conversation with Scott. The first part of our conversation was about his life in the mobile phone and tech industry. The bit you will hear now is about the shift.  It was the point when he found clarity and stopped chasing money and fame.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our guest on the show is a lifelong Innovator; it was his driving passion until something changed. Innovation is that seed of possibility; it is that inspiration that takes us forward to a future that is yet to be defined.  We can all get excited by innovation and possibility, and at the same time, I have lived long enough to see the unintended consequences of our best inventions. This conversation is about motivation and wonder and how one gets lost when the passion gets distorted by money and the search for status.   It is an amazing story of an innovator. Scott Stonham is a Brit born and raised in West London, now living in Reading. Technology was always his jam. Inspired by his uncle, who was an electrician, he tinkered and played with things to see how they worked. As a teenager, his uncle gave him a bank of switches, and he set about automating the gadgets in his room.  He was not the classic geek, being a bit of a rebel who was inspired by movies like “Back to the Future”, which led to him learning to Skateboard—the Karate Kid, which led to martial arts and finally, the Terminator. Which lead to a university degree in Cybernetics.    Upon leaving University, there was no cybernetics industry to join, so Scott went into software engineering and later got a job on Vodaphone. Scott Stonham is a lifelong innovator. This podcast is a fascinating exploration of innovation and the development of mobile applications in the late 90s at a time when there was no need for them. They were creating the business use and the market for the technology they were developing. Our guest, Scott Stonham, has helped bring to life many of the innovations that we take for granted, from the Mobile Internet to Smartphone Navigation.  Over the last 25 years he had senior technology and marketing roles for multi-nationals, including Vodafone, Qualcomm and edgy technology start-ups in the UK, Europe and the USA. Today, Scott focuses his energy on driving positive impacts for people, nature and the planet. He is driven by the UN sustainable development goals and channels his work through two ventures: Leading an accelerator for Impact Startups and helping companies understand and address their digital carbon footprints. Scott is an advisor, speaker, and author of the Exploring Digital Carbon Footprints report, a contributor to the Open University and the founder of Digital Carbon Online.     Further details about this podcast along with my Guest's website and social links are all available at: https://www.lifepassionandbusiness.com/david-kitchen-the-leadership-edge     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. Christopher Bishop's latest Quantum Tech Pod with Vanesa Diaz, CEO of quantum computing company LuxQuanta is live! Vanesa grew up in a small village in the north of Spain and because she was good at math, she eventually got a degree in engineering. Her early career found her in tech roles, but she wanted to spend less time in the lab and more time with customers and developing business strategies. So, she moved to Australia and got a Master's degree in marketing and business! When she returned to Europe, she landed a job at Corning, where she worked for over a decade. She has also worked at RYMSA and Vodaphone. Her company LuxQuanta was formed in May 2021 as a spin-off from The Institute of Photonic Sciences where it was incubated for over four years. LuxQuanta delivers Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems that can be integrated into existing network infrastructures to provide a quantum-safe layer of security on top of mathematical cryptographic techniques. Her advice to women interested in working in quantum: “The tech industry is still very male-dominated, and it is normal to fear that you might not be able to do something new or challenging. Surround yourself with the right support – from mentors to supervisors. And don't be afraid to fight for it!” Check out Chris's conversation with Vanesa at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or at this link!

‘Measure twice, cut once' is the old adage, but what if we could cut in a non-destructive way as many times as we want? Allie and Brendan chat with Amy Cameron, Research Director as STL Partners, to discuss digital doubles, real-time modeling, and predictive simulations. Digital doubles are built for two-way realtime interactions, creating perfect copies and allowing for instantaneous rollout. The potential for this new technology is only limited by the amount of data streaming it demands. Real-world use cases are discussed, like Vodaphone's landscaping doubles, who simulate seasonal plant growth to support the construction of their 5G telecom network. The capability of digi-doubles goes further, enabling simulated customer behaviour, planning traffic management strategies across cities, and safely executing cyber attacks on your own systems. Will digital twinning exist as an invisible safety net for system security, or evolve into something more visual with AR and VR technologies? How does the blockchain factor into this, and will the systems become interlinked in future? We'll break the rules because we're rule breakers20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:It was one of those things where I've always believed that you need to look inside yourself and figure out will you regret saying no to this one. And this was just one of those ones where I said yeah, this one is something I have to do.Global marketing director for De Beers diamond jewellers, an LVMH company, an amazing kind of training ground, because if anyone knows how to do luxury branding and marketing, it's LVMH.Going into the hotel industry, I thought, oh you know, I stay in hotels all the time I totally know what goes on. But no, mornings I was with housekeeping, I was with banqueting, I was with kitchens, I was with stewarding, all these functions I didn't even know existed in a hotel. In the afternoon I did my job but, so it was a bit of a hotel school in six months that I got to do.As Hong Kong started selling out of masks, I decided to go to New Zealand on the beginning of my sabbatical year. The sabbatical year didn't turn out exactly as I thought it was going to be, so I quickly kind of hurried back to Hong Kong as the pandemic expended around the world. It was 20 jobs in 9 years for me.If you want to make change, you have to figure out how the actual organization is structured.I actually took a step backwards role-wise, but it felt like the right thing to do, because it felt like a really smart humble group of people, that were trying to do things really differently. And that began my almost 9 year journey at Netflix. The way we live, the way we work is fundamentally different now, so I think retirement is now or never.ON TOPIC: The world of travel and entertainmentIf you look at travel and entertainment, we've gone through a boom and a bust exactly in inverse order. The world of travel and entertainment do mix very, very well together, as evidenced by the White Lotus, and how everyone's obsessed by it.The intersectionality of opening people's minds, whether it's via travel or telling stories from around the world and really, I think, Netflix allowed people to travel when they couldn't.The thing right now is that everything changes so quickly and believe me, actually the hotel industry in general is not one for fast changes.Every trend inspires a countertrend and so we will soon crave human contact and we will soon crave personality and senses of humor.ON TOPIC: Entertainment, Netflix, AI and moreWhat's been so much fun about Netflix was just the tech forward mindset of it.Netflix had been one of the early pioneers of pivoting and changing and starting new formats. We pivoted probably every six months and with that came a reorg probably at least once a year, if not more and figuring out what skill set do we need from our team.Netflix has been using AI since we started the service. All it did was that was what gave you the recommendations and it's a learning engine. In some ways the future is the pastON TOPIC: Marketing and branding with a capital BI think everything that a company does is marketing and branding, right? This advent of CMO to CEO starting to pick up speed is pretty prevalentThere's also a very kind of numbers and data-oriented nature in marketing. Being a very data-driven marketeer has served us both very, very wellAuthenticity is never a bad value to haveReferences, mentions:American express, LVMH, Peninsula, Rosewood hotel and resorts, Michelle Goss, Levi's, Starbucks, GAP, Vodaphone, Netflix, Mr Beast, Kim Kardashian, Anna Karenina (LeoTolstoy), The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (Charlie Mackesy), Enlightenment Now (Steve Pinker), Tim Cook, Apple, Taylor Swift

EU officials meet India's foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar amid concerns over processed imported Russian oil. The EU's high representative for foreign policy Joseph Borrell says Brussels is aware that India has been buying Russian oil in large volumes and processing it into fuel for sale in Europe. In an interview with the Financial Times, he said the EU should crack down on India reselling Russian oil as refined fuels, including diesel, to Europe. Although the practice is not illegal under the EU sanctions on Russia, the issue is expected to be raised at the first meeting of India-EU Trade and Technology in Brussels, Tuesday.   Welcome to the Podcast with Dr. Mary Travelbest:   FAQ is:  Should I bring a cellphone when I travel? Today's Destination is: Hong Kong Today's Mistake- Losing my cell phone in Mexico City Travel Advice:  Try Reddit for some travel advice channels.    List to the end to hear about the Reddit feed called “solo travel”. No one uses their real names, so it's free flow. It is like anonymous social media, with different priorities and postings than on FB or IG, or even YouTube.    FAQ: Should I bring a cell phone when I travel? Answer: Yes, at least one. Ask your carrier if they have service in the countries where you are traveling, and if so, what are the fees, if any. Ask about special plans if they offer them. You can also get a second service and buy a cheap phone when you get abroad. Wifi you will get in most hotels, but it is not always a guarantee. If you have a hot spot, maybe you can use that when you travel. Also, consider using a VPN for more privacy than not having one. VPN is Virtual Private Network.  I had two cell phones the last time I was in Mexico City, but I lost the extra one. I'll tell that story later in the Lessons Learned section. Today's destination: Hong Kong or East Asia What is there to do in Hong Kong solo? It's ideal for your first Step 5 trip because you can absorb as much culture as you like, still being in what was a British colony for a long time. They have traditions like high tea here you will like. On my first trip here, I did not have any reservations, back in pre-cell phone days. That was adventurous, admittedly. What was the worst part of the trip here? Probably a bad haircut. But that's ok. because hair grows back. The other downside was that I booked a cheap flat for a few days and as I recall in January, neither the heat nor the hot water was working. On another island, Lantau Island, you will discover a cable car that will amaze you. 3500 people per hour is the capacity, with more than 100 cabins.   https://www.np360.com.hk/en/cable-car Today's Mistake-  Losing my cell phone in Mexico City   I'm glad you held on to it here. So I had a backup cell phone, just for emergencies. I was in a dressing room at a store trying on clothes and I took a minute to send a text. I was using the new phone. However, I did not have them connected, and so I had to look up the contact info on one phone and use it on the second one. Well, this got complicated and eventually, I lost the new phone in the dressing room. I went back and it was not found. I contacted the store manager and no one turned it in.   Today's Travel Advice-Get good travel advice from others on social media like Twitter and Reddit.   I've got an active Twitter feed, in case you haven't been there. My sign is @drtravelbest  Are you following me? Here's another example:  Reddit.com/solotravel has a lot of good q and a on it. I'm seeing a lot of questions about sim cards in Europe, and it may cost 25 euros for 50 GB of data in Europe. Some recommend Vodaphone.  Get educated here and join me. Discussions are public. It's not “owned” by me, just see good posts and skip the garbage posts. No one uses their real names, so it's freeflow. JANUARY 2023Hello!  It is so good to be back in Europe!  After an easy, breezy New Year's Eve flight, I'm all settled in Athens, Greece.  My Airbnb is nice, modern, and safe.  It's located in the Patission neighborhood, in the northern part of Athens.  The area has everything I need within walking distance, but I need more "city-center energy", so I take the metro every day to the heart of the city.  The metro is efficient and not very expensive! So far, I've joined a co-working space, a gym, and got a pay-as-you-go phone plan!  My first day ended with a visit to a rooftop bar, gazing at the Acropolis and Parthenon, and watching the sunset.  Day two was spent getting to know the city better by just relaxing on the Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tour. There is so much to do here, and I can't wait to start exploring! In this episode:Travel from U.S. back to EuropeMy Airbnb in the Patission neighborhood of AthensTaking the MetroBack in my routine by joining a co-working space and gymRooftop barsHop-On Hop-Off Bus TourWebsite  I  Instagram  I  Twitter  I  LinkedIn  I  YouTubeEmail: actorbobtapper@gmail.comAirbnbBook your stayPatission StreetMy neighborhoodSelinaMy co-working spaceHolmes PlaceI love this gym!VodaphoneStay connected wherever you go in Greece!Hop-On Hop-Off Bus TourGet your tickets here! Qualcomm: From Satellites to CDMA to Snapdragons

The History of Computing

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2022 28:55

Qualcomm is the world's largest fabless semiconductor designer. The name Qualcomm is a mashup of  Quality and Communications and communications has been a hallmark of the company since its founding. They began in satellite communications and today most every smartphone has a Qualcomm chip. The ubiquity of communications in our devices and everyday lives has allowed them a $182 billion market cap as of the time of this writing.  Qualcomm began with far humbler beginnings. They emerged out of a company called Linkabit in 1985. Linkabit was started by Irwin Jacobs, Leonard Kleinrock, and Andrew Viterbi - all three former graduate students at MIT.  Viterbi moved to California to take a job with JPL in Pasadena, where he worked on satellites. He then went off to UCLA where he developed what we now call the Viterti algorithm, for encoding and decoding digital communications. Jacobs worked on a book called Principles of Communication Engineering after getting his doctorate at MIT. Jacobs then took a year of leave to work at JPL after he met Viterbi in the early 1960s and the two hit it off. By 1966, Jacobs was a professor at the University of California, San Diego. Kleinrock was at UCLA by then and the three realized they had too many consulting efforts between them, but if they consolidated the request they could pool their resources. Eventually Jacobs and Viterbi left and Kleinrock got busy working on the first ARPANET node when it was installed at UCLA. Jerry Heller, Andrew Cohen, Klein Gilhousen, and James Dunn eventually moved into the area to work at Linkabit and by the 1970s Jacobs was back to help design telecommunications for satellites. They'd been working to refine the theories from Claude Shannon's time at MIT and Bell Labs and were some of the top names in the industry on the work. And the space race needed a lot of this type of work. They did their work on Scientific Data Systems computers in an era before that company was acquired by Xerox. Much as Claude Shannon got started thinking of data loss as it pertains to information theory while trying to send telegraphs over barbed wire, they refined that work thinking about sending images from mars to earth.  Others from MIT worked on other space projects as a part of missions. Many of those early employees were Viterbi's PhD students and they were joined by Joseph Odenwalder, who took Viterbi's decoding work and combined it with a previous dissertation out of MIT when he joined Linkabit. That got used in the Voyager space probes and put Linkabit on the map. They were hiring some of the top talent in digital communications and were able to promote not only being able to work with some of the top minds in the industry but also the fact that they were in beautiful San Diego, which appealed to many in the Boston or MIT communities during harsh winters. As solid state electronics got cheaper and the number of transistors more densely packed into those wafers, they were able to exploit the ability to make hardware and software for military applications by packing digital signal processors that had previously taken a Sigma from SDS into smaller and smaller form factors, like the Linkabit Microprocessor, which got Viterbi's algorithm for encoding data into a breadboard and a chip.  The work continued with defense contractors and suppliers. They built modulation and demodulation for UHF signals for military communications. That evolved into a Command Post Modem/Processor they sold, or CPM/P for short. They made modems for the military in the 1970s, some of which remained in production until the 1990s. And as they turned their way into the 1980s, they had more than $10 million in revenue.  The UC San Diego program grew in those years, and the Linkabit founders had more and more local talent to choose from. Linkabit developed tools to facilitate encoded communications over commercial satellites as well. They partnered with companies like IBM and developed smaller business units they were able to sell off. They also developed a tool they called VideoCipher to encode video, which HBO and others used to do what we later called scrambling on satellite signals. As we rounded the corner into the 1990s, though, they turned their attention to cellular services with TDMA (Time-Division Multiple Access), an early alternative to CDMA. Along the way, Linkabit got acquired by a company called MACOM in 1980 for $25 million. The founders liked that the acquirer was a fellow PhD from MIT and Linkabit stayed separate but grew quickly with the products they were introducing. As with most acquisitions, the culture changed and by 1985 the founders were gone. The VideoCipher and other units were sold off, spun off, or people just left and started new companies. Information theory was decades old at this point, plenty of academic papers had been published, and everyone who understood the industry knew that digital telecommunications was about to explode; a perfect storm for defections. Qualcomm Over the course of the next few years over two dozen companies were born as the alumni left and by 2003, 76 companies were founded by Linkabit alumni, including four who went public. One of the companies that emerged included the Linkabit founders Irwin Jacobs and Andrew Viterbi, Begun in 1985, Qualcomm is also based in San Diego. The founders had put information theory into practice at Linkabit and seen that the managers who were great at finance just weren't inspiring to scientists.  Qualcomm began with consulting and research, but this time looked for products to take to market. They merged with a company called Omninet and the two released the OmniTRACS satellite communication system for trucking and logistical companies. They landed Schneider National and a few other large customers and grew to over 600 employees in those first five years. It remained a Qualcomm subsidiary until recently. Even with tens of millions in revenue, they operated at a loss while researching what they knew would be the next big thing.  Code-Division Multiple Acces, or CDMA, is a technology that allows for sending information over multiple channels so users can share not just a single frequency of the radio band, but multiple frequencies without a lot of interference. The original research began all the way back in the 1930s when Dmitry Ageyev in the Soviet Union researched the theory of code division of signals at Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute of Communications. That work and was furthered during World War II by German researchers like Karl Küpfmüller and Americans like Claude Shannon, who focused more on the information theory of communication channels.  People like Lee Yuk-wing then took the cybernetics work from pioneers like Norbert Weiner and helped connect those with others like Qualcomm's Jacobs, a student of Yuk-wing's when he was a professor at MIT. They were already working on CDMA jamming in the early 1950s at MIT's Lincoln Lab. Another Russian named Leonid Kupriyanovich put the concept of CMDA into practice in the later 1950s so the Soviets could track people using a service they called Altai. That made it perfect for  perfect for tracking trucks and within a few years was released in 1965 as a pre-cellular radiotelephone network that got bridged to standard phone lines. The Linkabit and then Qualcomm engineers had worked closely with satellite engineers at JPL then Hughes and other defense then commercial contractors. They'd come in contact with work and built their own intellectual property for decades. Bell was working on mobile, or cellular technologies. Ameritech Mobile Communications, or Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) as they were known at the time, launched the first 1G network in 1983 and Vodaphone launched their first service in the UK in 1984. Qualcomm filed their first patent for CDMA the next year.  That patent is one of the most cited documents in all of technology. Qualcomm worked closely with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US and with industry consortiums, such as the CTIA, or Cellular Telephone Industries Association. Meanwhile Ericsson promoted the TDMA standard as they claimed it was more standard; however, Qualcomm worked on additional patents and got to the point that they licensed their technology to early cell phone providers like Ameritech, who was one of the first to switch from the TDMA standard Ericsson promoted to CDMA. Other carriers switched to CDMA as well, which gave them data to prove their technology worked. The OmniTRACS service helped with revenue, but they needed more. So they filed for an initial public offering in 1991 and raised over $500 billion in funding between then and 1995 when they sold another round of shares. By then, they had done the work to get CDMA encoding on a chip and it was time to go to the mass market. They made double what they raised back in just the first two years, reaching over $800 million in revenue in 1996.  Qualcomm and Cell Phones One of the reasons Qualcomm was able to raise so much money in two substantial rounds of public funding is that the test demonstrations were going so well. They deployed CDMA in San Diego, New York, Honk Kong, Los Angeles, and within just a few years had over a dozen carriers running substantial tests. The CTIA supported CDMA as a standard in 1993 and by 1995 they went from tests to commercial networks.  The standard grew in adoption from there. South Korea standardized on CDMA between 1993 to 116. The CDMA standard was embraced by Primeco in 1995, who used the 1900 MHz PCS band. This was a joint venture between a number of vendors including two former regional AT&T spin-offs from before the breakup of AT&T and represented interests from Cox Communications, Sprint, and turned out to be a large undertaking. It was also the largest cellular launch with services going live in 19 cities and the first phones were from a joint venture between Qualcomm and Sony. Most of PrimeCo's assets were later merged with AirTouch Cellular and the Bell Atlantic Mobile to form what we now know as Verizon Wireless.  Along the way, there were a few barriers to mass proliferation of the Qualcomm CDMA standards. One is that they made phones. The Qualcomm Q cost them a lot to manufacture and it was a market with a lot of competition who had cheaper manufacturing ecosystems. So Qualcomm sold the manufacturing business to Kyocera, who continued to license Qualcomm chips. Now they could shift all of their focus on encoding bits of data to be carried over multiple radio channels to do their part in paving the way for 2G and 3G networks with the chips that went into most phones of the era.  Qualcomm couldn't have built out a mass manufacturing ecosystem to supply the world with every phone needed in the 2G and 3G era. Nor could they make the chips that went in those phones. The mid and late 1990s saw them outsource then just license their patents and know-how to other companies. A quarter of a billion 3G subscribers across over a hundred carriers in dozens of countries. They got in front of what came after CDMA and worked on multiple other standards, including OFDMA, or Orthogonal frequency-Division Multiple Access. For those they developed the Qualcomm Flarion Flash-OFDM and 3GPP 5G NR, or New Radio. And of course a boatload of other innovative technologies and chips. Thus paving the way to have made Qualcomm instrumental in 5G and beyond.  This was really made possible by this hyper-specialization. Many of the same people who developed the encoding technology for the Voyager satellite decades prior helped pave the way for the mobile revolution. They ventured into manufacturing but as with many of the designers of technology and chips, chose to license the technology in massive cross-licensing deals. These deals are so big Apple sued Qualcomm recently for a billion in missed rebates. But there were changes happening in the technology industry that would shake up those licensing deals.  Broadcom was growing into a behemoth. Many of their designs sent from stand-alone chips to being a small part of a SoC, or system on a chip. Suddenly, cross-licensing the ARM gave Qualcomm the ability to make full SoCs.  Snapdragon has been the moniker of the current line of SoCs since 2007. Qualcomm has an ARM Architectural License and uses the ARM instruction set to create their own CPUs. The most recent incarnation is known as Krait. They also create their own Graphics Processor (GPU) and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) known as Adreno and Hexagon. They recently acquired Arteris' technology and engineering group, and they used Arteris' Network on Chip (NoC) technology. Snapdragon chips can be found in the Samsung Galaxy, Vivo, Asus, and Xiaomi phones. Apple designs their own chips that are based on the ARM architecture, so in some ways compete with the Snapdragon, but still use Qualcomm modems like every other SoC. Qualcomm also bought a new patent portfolio from HP, including the Palm patents and others, so who knows what we'll find in the next chips - maybe a chip in a stylus.  Their slogan is "enabling the wireless industry," and they've certainly done that. From satellite communications that required a computer the size of a few refrigerators to battlefield communications to shipping trucks with tracking systems to cell towers, and now the full processor on a cell phone. They've been with us since the beginning of the mobile era and one has to wonder if the next few generations of mobile technology will involve satellites, so if Qualcomm will end up right back where they began: encoding bits of information theory into silicon.

Retro AIOTM #17 - Back to the end of June 2010 for more retro AIOTM and loads more motorcycle clothing shops. If you’re enjoying these crazy steps back in time then you can become a monthly badger here or link you Amazon Prime and Twitch Prime accounts and give us money at no cost to yourself - watch this video to find out howAs It Occurs To Me: Series 2, Episode 7: It's the penultimate episode of Season 2 and the whole country is reeling from the worst spectacle they have witnessed in years, the motorcycle clothing shop sketch. Is there any way back for us now? And is the way back to just keep doing the same sketch until people realise it is a new zenith of comedy? We've moved to the Bloomsbury Theatre because we think we're Virginia Woolf. Emma's been unable to use her new iPhone 4, Dan, who is half German has been praying for England to lose at football (so blame him) and Christian has been signing boobs because he is rock and also roll. We pull out the stops to annoy Bob Rudge and take a leaf out of the book of the lazy writers of My Two Dads. Blah blah blah Tiny Andrew Blah and we meet the odd daughter and dad from the Vodaphone adverts and eat the crumbs from out of God's kitchen bin, and what's going on with the high-backed armchair? It's repetitious and relies on stupid comedy voices and Rich has become everything he hates. But come in and join us, the cumpkins are lovely. And there's some stuff about football too. After receiving a Bachelor of Commerce and Masters of Marketing in his home country of Australia, Warrick built numerous businesses from the ground-up in the automotive, mobile payment, and advertising industries. Warrick's passion for and experience in innovation and business development ultimately brought him to Vodafone, where he devoted his entrepreneurial mind-set to revamping innovation at the heart of Vodafone. His vision to create a technology development program materialised through the creation of a Global Innovation Centre for Vodafone. He has been seen as a pioneer and thought leader in corporate innovation and has won numerous global awards for his efforts. Questions I asked in today's podcast: (2:10) Who is Warrick? (3:47) A lot of people go from corporate to starting their own business. How did you go from the freedom etc. that people crave when working in the corporate world to then stepping into a huge company. How did you deal with that? (6:10) How did you overcome your fear and still go for the opportunity? (7:35) What made you decide to leave Vodaphone and the corporate space and move back to Melbourne? (8:40) How did you find the process of moving from Europe back to Australia? (11:40) When COVID-19 started kicking off, what advice were you giving to start-up, CEOs and Founders? (13:34) If you had someone sat there listening to this right now, and they were struggling to find the motivation. Brendan Roberts founded Aider in 2017 after more than 15 years helping small businesses with their communications and IT needs. Roberts hacked together a specialty voice assistant using off-the-shelf technologies in 2017 to prove that it could help address common problems faced by small businesses. He then launched Aider as a specialty assistant for small business managers more than a year ago in New Zealand and Australia and then in July expanded to North America. Aider helps small businesses by integrating with a variety of third-party solutions they already use today ranging from accounting to inventory and marketing. The assistant makes it easier to access the information in those systems today and soon will also enable the execution of voice-directed actions. The assistant can be accessed via the Aider mobile app or through popular general-purpose assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant. In December, the company closed a seed round of funding which included Coca-Cola's investment arm.  Previously, Brendan was a co-founder of 9 Spokes an IT services company in New Zealand. Before that he spent many years in telecom at Vodaphone in New Zealand and Carphone Warehouse in London. We talk getting started, the role for specialty assistants, build or buy decisions for technology, managing through COVID when you see your customer's revenues fall off a cliff before they do, and more.

Over the last week we have seen fear run riot across our society. The corona virus, COVID 19, has ruined my potential holiday to Italy, but it has also single handedly plunging Europe, and indeed the world, into a recession.   In my life time I cannot remember hysteria like we have seen in the last few weeks. I’ve lived through 911, and I flew to Europe in September 11th 2001 in defiance of the fear of those around me. Today, in what is a genuine pandemic and global emergency, we have seen unprecedented levels of fear in the media and among governments worldwide.   Major sporting events have been cancelled, with no football in Europe, Asia or America. Concerts and festivals cancelled. In some places like Italy, schools, churches and museums are closed. Fear is everywhere, disrupting and controlling the lives of 7 billion people. But the Bible says,   Psalms 27:1 (ESV Strong's) The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?   Make no mistake, the world is enslaved right now. A few thousand will die of the corona virus, but billions will suffer financially as a result of the fear and hysteria created around it. So today I want to look at a Christian response to the corona virus pandemic…   THE WORLD USES FEAR TO CONTROL   Let’s make it clear we are seeing a worldwide tragedy unfolding.   Fears about the corona virus have wiped out nearly 4 trillion dollars in the US stock market, with the biggest weekly loss since 2008. Many countries are in total lockdown, and cruise ships are floating Petri dishes. Many are afraid to go out of their homes. Life appears to be grinding to a halt! Fear controls us. But,   2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV Strong's) for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.   So let’s exercise a sound mind and look at the facts, so we can shine a light of hope into a world plunging into darkness. In all the mess, the hysteria, the fear mongering, this is our moment to shine!   Matthew 5:16 (ESV Strong's) In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.   FACTS ABOUT COVID 19   Here are some facts you need to know about COVID 19…   Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus that had not been previously identified in humans. The virus causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever and in more severe cases, pneumonia. In rare cases, particularly among those who are elderly, have compromised immune systems or severe respiratory conditions, it can be fatal. It’s rare, but if you’re the one, it’s bad.   Spread of the disease can be limited by washing hands, staying home when sick and avoiding infected people.   I understand the role of hand sanitiser in this, but I am still unsure of the role of toilet paper.   The corona virus is a mild flu. It’s not the plague, or a flesh eating microbe. Because it is hard to tell how many are actually infected, the ratio of deaths to infections is high, around 3.4%. But epidemiologists agree this is grossly over estimated due to the lack of testing and confirmed cases. They believe it is under 1%.   Let’s talk numbers. Around 5,000 people have died of the COVID 19 so far. In the last 12 months it is estimated that 650,000 died of the common flu, for which we have a vaccine. 33 times more died of common flu. The largest pandemic in history was the Spanish flu of 1918, which infected 1/3 of the planet’s population and killed between 20-50 million people worldwide, double what world war 1 killed.   But the media, seizing and sensationalising figures like 3.4% death rate have driven this incredible fear within which we now live. While some fear is healthy, much of it today is destructive.   What does fear actually do?   1.      FEAR PARALYSES   Psalms 143:4 (ESV Strong's) Therefore my spirit faints within me; my heart within me is appalled. New Living Translation I am losing all hope; I am paralyzed with fear.   The devil uses fear to paralyses you. Many people are so fearful they cannot act. Agoraphobics cannot go out of the house, clostrophobics have fear of small spaces, , acrophobics have fear of heights. Pediophobics have fear of dolls, decidophobics fear making decisions. Omphalophobia is fear of belly buttons, arachi-butero- phobia is fear of peanut button sticking to the roof of your mouth, and one we can all relate to is nomophobia, fear of being without mobile phone coverage. A moment’s silence for those on Vodaphone. My favourite fear of phobia is called Hippo-poto-monstro-ses-quippe-dalio-phobia: Fear of Long Words.   Fear can paralyse you and control and ruin your life.   2.      FEAR CONTROLS   People with phobia are controlled by their fear. The enemy wants to control peoples lives, and He uses fear to do it. Fear stopped me travelling to where I wanted to go, it may stop all travel. It’s stopped sporting and cultural events, and it is controlling how people live. It makes people buy toilet paper.   Romans 8:15 (ESV Strong's) For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”   People right now are slaves to fear, because fear is controlling their behaviour. Fear does not set you free, it enslaves you. Right now the whole world is being enslaved by fear.   3.      FEAR LIMITS POTENTIAL   Fear stunts your progress and growth. If you are fearful, you are afraid to step out and try something, so you miss opportunities to develop.   Joshua 1:9 (ESV Strong's) Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”   When you live enslaved to fear, your potential is limited. When you come to Christ, why should you fear, because your life is in His hands?   2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV Strong's) for we walk by faith, not by sight.   People who let fear control and limit them are walking by sight, but we are called to walk by faith.   4.      FEAR CHANGES OUR FOCUS   What you’ll notice right now is that peoples focus is completely absorbed by fear.  What is everyone talking about? What is Facebook full of? Fear causes us to focus on earthly, immediate, fearful things, not one long term or important stuff. In a years time. Will you be afraid to shake hands or walk past toilet paper without buying it?   In this fearful climate, this is your opportunity to   Colossians 3:2 (ESV Strong's) Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.   To focus on loving and caring for people, not on your own preservation. Much of what people are currently focussed on is not fact, it’s sensationalised fear.   FEAR ITSELF   At the start of his presidency, Franklin D Roosevelt faced the Great Depression. People were starving, unemployed, destitute and without hope. At his inaugural speech he said these words, “We have nothing to fear except fear itself.” I think these words are appropriate for right now, don’t you?   Yes, fear is powerful as we are currently seeing. It is terrifying, it is destructive but it is not our master, Christ is!  People in this world fear dying, but they also fear living. People fear not having enough money, but they also fear losing the money they have. They fear the virus, but also fear a recession.   A few might be infected with COVID 19, but all of us are infected with fear!   Peter experienced fear when he stood by the fire while Jesus was being tried.   Elijah had a mighty victory against the prophets of Baal at Mt. Carmel, then ran in fear of Jezebel.   Fear respects no one! Anyone can fall victim to fear. Even Timothy, with the Christian upbringing in the home, his training at the feet of Paul, and spiritual his gifts, fell victim to fear. Yet through it all God says,   Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV Strong's) It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”   The phrase “fear not” is used more than 80 times in the Bible, because God knows the enemy uses fear to decrease our hope and limit  our victories.   So I believe that right now God is calling us to stand without fear in a climate of fear! And as Steven Wright once quipped, “What happens if you get scared half to death twice?”   HOW CAN WE OVERCOME FEAR?   This world calls sinful behaviour normal, and attacks Christians without mercy. But this same world is now running scared, and I believe we have a unique opportunity to shine into their darkness…   Philippians 2:14-15 (ESV Strong's) Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,   We can shine and overcome fear when others are victimised by it. How?   1.      WE HAVE GOD’S FAITH TO SEE THINGS CLEARLY   Hebrews 11:1 (ESV Strong's) Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.   Faith sees differently. Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered. There was no one there. Without downplaying the seriousness of a pandemic, you do not have to swallow the sensationalised fear mongering that the media is peddling. The eyes of faith can see the long term, eternal and important things. Faith doesn’t lurch from crisis to crisis, it believes for greater things to come, and it offers what the others cannot offer… Hope!   2.      WE HAVE GOD’S POWER TO CONFRONT FEAR   An experienced paratrooper was asked how many jumps he had to his credit. He responded, "Twenty‑five." Then, with his head held low he added, “Actually, it was only one jump.” … “I only jumped once, the other twenty-four times I was pushed.”   Sometimes God will push us in order to help us overcome our fear. He wants us to know that the power to overcome is present not because we are great or better than anyone else, but because He is present in our lives.   Psalms 112:6-8 (ESV Strong's) For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.   Why be fearful? We can face our fears with His faith and trust God. Others have nothing, others can be consumed by fear, but we can have faith!   God is like a father standing in the pool beckoning his child to jump into His arms. The child is reluctant. At last, the child sees the father’s large, strong arms and smiling face, and jumps. There is no way that father is going to let the child drown! That is how God wants us to trust Him in every situation.   God willing, Fiona and I are headed back to Fiji, where I did my scuba diving ticket. I’m going to meet the same people again. In my course, on my 4th dive, the locals had failed to clean a valve and it seized up, causing my air to stop when I was 18m underwater. I nearly died. But an hour later I went back to another dive. I chose to confronted my fear, and I will do so again this week.   3.      WE HAVE GOD’S LOVE  TO CAST OUT FEAR   1 John 4:18-19 (ESV Strong's) There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us.   We have love to cast our fear. But this is not our love for God - it is His love for us. You need not fear; He loves you!   You see, it is not just God’s strength that causes us to trust Him, it is His love! He loves us and even if we are going through hardships, He is working behind the scenes to bring about a good purpose.   Romans 8:28 (ESV Strong's) And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.   All things, even the tough ones, even the scary ones! When you truly know the God of all creation loves you, and cares for you, and will never let your foot slip, then you can face anything, any virus, any persecution, any fear!   Psalms 121:1-4 (ESV Strong's) I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.   If you can trust Him to save your soul, you ought to be able to trust Him to take care of you. You are His beloved child.   4.      WE HAVE GOD’S SOUND MIND TO CONTAIN FEAR   Sometimes we know God, we eve trust God but our mind runs riot. As I plunge into the Emerald water and dive lower and lower, my mind imagines death and destruction, sharks coming out of the gloom, all kinds of fears! They’re not real, they are my imagination.   A large, old Bible, frequently used by Abraham Lincoln during the critical years of the Civil War, falls open easily to Psalm 34. One page of that Bible has a smudge where the President placed his finger often. It’s this verse…   Psalms 34:4 (ESV Strong's) I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.   We face fear, just like the rest of the world, but let not your mind be troubled.   2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV Strong's) for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.   Let me finish by examining this verse in the Greek, because we can gain valuable insight into how we should behave right now.   God gave us a spirit not of fear. The Greek word for fear used here is not the usual PHOBE, but it is DEILIA, which means timidity or cowardice. It is a call to, when faced with a fearful situation, choose courage over cowardice. To confront, stand firm and defeat the enemy, and not cower back in this climate of fear.   But what of the three descriptions of the Spirit we do have?   Power. The Greek for power is DYNAMIS, which is strength and power due to an inherent ability. It is used to describe powerful influence by wealthy people, the power of having and army or huge resources behind you and the power to perform miracles. It’s the word from which we get the English DYNAMITE. Explosive power. The power is not of your own doing, but you channel the power.   LOVE. The Greek here is AGAPE, unconditional, unrelenting, all triumphing love that knows not limits and no bounds. Perfect love comes from God and casts our fear.   Sound mind. In Greek SOPHRONISMOS, meaning self control or control of one’s behaviour and thoughts.  It means being sensible, not foolish, being balanced not alarmist and being Christ centred not crisis centred.   IT’S TIME TO STAND   When the world is running in fear, we can stand against the fear with power, love and a sound mind.   So, we must be sensible. Ease up on handshakes, hugs and missing, but let’s not fall into line and fall victim to the fear tactics of the enemy. The corona virus is big, but my God is bigger, and we can show the world how to live by faith when they are cowering in fear.   Now, there is one type of person here in this service, or out in the world, that has a right to be afraid. If you have never trusted Christ, you are one heartbeat from meeting God.   Hebrews 9:27 (ESV Strong's) And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,   Without Christ fear has free reign, you are it’s slave and it is your master, but when you come to Jesus, His love and power creates a sound mind that does not live in fear.   1 John 4:4 (ESV Strong's) Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.   If you don’t know Jesus, I want to give you the chance to come to Him right now and begin to conquer your fears whatever they may be.   Sometimes, even when you love God, you need reminding that He is greater, He is in you and He will protect and lead you. Whether you are fearful of the coronavirus, or struggling with fear of loss, loneliness, failure or any other fear, this is for you. Some of you in business look ahead with fear.   I have asked God for a special Anointing to conquer fear today. If you are fearful, come and let’s triumph over fear together. Let’s lay our fears aside and trust God completely.   So let’s finish with a promise from God, for you and I today as we face the threat of the corona virus…   Psalms 91:1-11 (ESV Strong's) He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge— no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

Welcome back to another episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur podcast with your host Rob Moore. In this latest episode, Rob interviews Chairman of Wyldecrest Parks, business magnate, investor and philanthropist, Alfie Best. Their conversation goes from Alfie's humble routes knocking on doors, to being a multi-millionaire owner of the biggest mobile home country business in the world. Are entrepreneurs born or made? and what's the difference between being a boss and a leader, find out more by listening to this fascinating interview.   Key Takeaways Do You Think Being Born On The Side of The Road Has Shaped The Way You Do Business? No, the place where you are born is not important, it's the journey that is important. I don't see myself as an entrepreneur I see myself as an artist, and I'm painting a picture of my life with the business. Are Entrepreneurs born or made? The word entrepreneur is banded around way too much, and we use the word but we don't have an understanding of what it means. Are they people who can operate across different sectors and fields? Entrepreneurs are successful in not just one field but in different fields. If you're successful at one thing you're a businessman and if you are successful across different fields, you an entrepreneur. For all the success you have, it's only temporary and it can change in the future. We can all teach yourself to become more, but entrepreneurs are natural risk takers, calculated risk takers. In some people that is sparks and in other it might bonfires, but everyone has something. Can That Be A Curse That You Never Quite Make It? I live in fear. I'm always worried about tomorrow. In the next 18 months, I will take Wylecrest to the market, and I believe that we are groundbreaking in a series of areas. We are the ones setting the bar. That's the difference between a hobby and a business, business is going to make you money not cost you money. Why Do You Fear Tomorrow? I live in the real world where changes can happen without any warning. I've been scarred by the 1990 recession which hit the business hard. How Do You Let The Fear Drive You Or Cripple You? My fears push me because it drives me to get up early in the morning and enjoy my work. Life doesn't mould you, life cuts pieces out of you. Are you going to end up masterpiece or misshapen person? It's the fear of failure and fear of going bust which drives me going forward? How Did You Develop That Mindset? I try to simplify things. There are winners and losers and both are successful. One is just more successful than the other. To win you have to unravel the puzzle of how that other boxer, a player person plays. What's The Difference Between A Boss and A Leader? A leader fights with you rather than telling you what to do. I guess the journey is moving from a boss to a leader. Often in interviews, people will say that the team is the most important thing. All of your team should know what your goals are for the business. We start with a yes, for every resident, the residents might not like how we get to the yes but we will explain the process. What Was Your Journey Into Business? Financially we were not rich but as a child, we did have a rich childhood. I went to school periodically through this period and went through some difficult times selling door to door. In this period I realised how important it is to know your market.  That recession scars still lives with me today. I looked for businesses that had queues which were Phone shops and Takeaways so I set up my own phone shop which ended up getting sold to Vodaphone. I still own those shops that Vodaphone use today. Traditional education vs teaching yourself? Education gives you the guiding rails. If you think of education as trains the best is the fast train on the tracks whereas the slower trains are being self-taught. I was self-taught. Self-education made me hustler street trader, it added to my education. You have to have both. What is your outlook on Business? Business is the soul of any country, if you want your skin to blossom you have to eat the right food, we need to nurture business more. We need to stop promising what we are going to and teach what we are going to do. Smart Work or Hard Work? Always work smartly but work hard at it. Money makes you happy because it buys you freedom. What Does Disruptive Mean To You? To me is ruffling the feathers of the norm, which I see as a good thing. Best Moments ‘If you're successful at one thing you're a businessman and if you are successful across different fields you an entrepreneur.' ‘Taking the knocks and treating them rather than a downside it's an education' ‘I'm not in the business of commercial hobbies.' ‘A problem is only a problem if you don't find a solution.' ‘Keeping things simple, makes everything simple.' ‘All entrepreneurs are calculated gamblers.' ‘Everybody has a success gene.' ‘Entrepreneurs make terrible managers, and managers make terrible entrepreneurs.' ‘All your team should know your goals for the business.' ‘Have to', is a great master.' ‘There are so many opportunities in the UK from foreign investment.' ‘Easiest thing to get rid of is money, the easiest thing is to gain money.' To achieve success is not easy and to maintain that success is even harder but Alfie Best has shown how it can be done, even when you have not been born with the proverbial silver spoon in the mouth. Born of humble origins and raised in a Romany Gypsy family, this self-made man studied at “University of Life” and started his professional success story totally from scratch. However, coming from a struggling background and a minority group only gave him even more desire to succeed. As a gypsy, he had to face many obstacles and prejudices but he has never allowed those to ruin his dreams and ambitions or to disrupt his investments into the businesses he operates. Instead, he has taken those negative prejudices and turned them into positives by surrounding himself with a diverse and multicultural team. It’s a pod of ups and downs this week, so hang onto your hats as the team drag you through the spectrum from sensible and productive innovations to the disappointing and potentially harmful. High points include using idle phones on charge for developing cancer treatments (hey Vodaphone, we have some ideas on that) and the brilliant CAST have been developing design principles for charities. The low is, of course, the rant of the week and the topic of claiming you can build an app, for a charity, in just 3 days. Spoiler, the team don’t think it can be done. But they are open to being surprised so listen out for their challenge to test this app, wouldn’t it be fun if they had to eat their words. It's all about social media changes this week as Twitter adds new features, Vero goes True Social and there may soon be 4G coverage on the moon! Plus Streaming services may be in trouble and Jason time travels to 2013! Twitter finally added it's most requested feature As a Twitter user it's long been frustrating that there wasn't an easy way to save a tweet/link for later reading from within the app. That wait appears to be over as Twitter is rolling out a new feature called Bookmarks. It will finally allow you to save those interesting tweets/links for later consumption in an efficient in app manner. No more trying to direct message yourself the links you wanted to save! Are Streaming Music Services About To Go Extinct? These may be golden years for streaming digital music, so enjoy it while it lasts. Hundreds of millions of listeners have made the leap to streaming, abandoning CDs and downloads for free and monthly subscription services like Pandora, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music and Amazon Prime Music. But the business has been treacherous, at least when it comes to turning a profit. The latest reminder: Spotify's filing for U.S. shares, which detailed how big payouts to music labels have made it tough to turn its 71 million subscribers into a profitable concern. Late last week, Internet radio station iHeartRadio moved closer to bankruptcy, according to two reports. Vero - True Social App Everyone seems to be jumping onboard this new social media app that is claiming to be the answer to the frustration with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter algorithms. It's still in Beta stage, so bugs are a normal occurence, but there is now some speculation regarding the security of the app causing concern among many early adopters. 4G cellular coverage on the moon While many people across the world that live in rural areas don't have cell access at home, Space X and Vodaphone plan to take the first steps towards installing 4G cellular networks on the surface of the moon. It's 2013 for Jason! No he didn't travel back in time to stop his future killer, Jason finally upgraded his Playstation 3 to a 4! Why now? (Discussion) Also, he just ordered a 4K television but only got a regular PS4 … is he stupid!

It's the penultimate episode of Season 2 and the whole country is reeling from the worst spectacle they have witnessed in years, the motorcycle clothing shop sketch.

"We're committed to excellent customer service." Interesting idea. However, I'm not sure that we really are. Most of the time, I assert, we're too busy listening to the little voices inside our heads. I mean the voices that are constantly filtering our experiences--judging and assessing, telling us that we agree/don't agree/like it/don't like it/seen it before/trust you/don't trust you and on and on and on. With our little voices giving us the blow by blow from Radio Free Saigon, it gets a little tough to hear much of anything else. So, are we really listening to our customers, vendors, suppliers, employees and business partners? Probably not. Setting up listening posts, routine ways to listen to our customers, can be a daunting undertaking. We face loss of management control, changing the fundamentals of the business, reliability of information and scalability. We tend to contact people only when there's a problem we're trying to solve--not to learn about how to improve services that are already great. Request for Help If you have a contact at MTV, send me an email. I have a business associate who's trying to make a contact there.
