Trust in legacy journalism is plummeting, and after years working inside the CBC, Tara Henley has a good idea why. The author of the new book, The Trust Spiral: Why the Media Needs Objectivity, discusses with Brian how broad-mindedness in newsrooms was ruined by the emergence of an urban and elite class of group-thinking journalists combined with a revenue crisis that discouraged the risk of nonconformist perspectives. Making things worse, Henley argues, is that government subsidies have corrupted market signals that could force badly needed discipline on media owners. But the answer isn't internet outlets that are even more one-sided, she explains: media need to relearn the tools they once used to keep themselves more honest. Kristen Welker asking candidates whether Israel has a right to exist, when the parallel question about Palestine in 1948 never gets asked at all. Hawk's read on the timeline: before April, when Piker campaigned with El-Sayed in Michigan and El-Sayed climbed, almost nobody outside a few million followers knew the name. Third Way then organized a denunciation with members of Congress, and Jake Tapper and Dana Bash each ran long segments without booking him. Joe Scarborough attributed quotes to him he never said. The attacks built the profile they were meant to shrink. Underneath it is the same argument: elected Democrats have not listened to their base in twenty five years, and the base is now voting accordingly. This started in April, when Piker appeared at a campaign event with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and El-Sayed climbed in the polls. Third Way then organized a denunciation with members of Congress. Zohran Mamdani ran on free buses, cheaper housing, childcare, groceries, and taxing the rich, and most New York Democrats still would not endorse him. Hawk connects that to Kirsten Gillibrand's language about Mamdani after the primary. Third Way now plans 15 million dollars against Democrats who have already won their primaries. Not against Republicans.
