Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has used his office to threaten or punish people he says have wronged him in the past. That includes prominent law firms that have represented Democratic causes or hired attorneys who have investigated him, such as former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III. To get back on Trump's good side, some law firms are now pledging to do pro bono work for causes the administration supports. As of late last week, some law firms Trump has pressured have promised him nearly a billion dollars in legal services. Others are taking the administration to court.Host Colby Itkowitz speaks with law enforcement and criminal justice reporter Mark Berman about how Trump is using the power of the presidency to muzzle private law firms and why many lawyers say his moves undermine the entire justice system.Today's show was produced by Laura Benshoff. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of therapy that has been in use for decades. My guest in this episode believes that CBT can be applied to create better therapeutics, and, in fact, that's exactly what his company is called: Better Therapeutics. Dr. Mark Berman, the Chief Medical Officer at Better Therapeutics, explained that the goal of CBT is to “help people change some of those core beliefs, which then directly influence what we do on a day to day basis.” And while CBT was originally applied to help people with conditions like PTSD, anxiety and depression, the team at Better Therapeutics have developed their own variant of CBT to apply the core principles of CBT to the ideas that drive root behaviors like diet, exercise and other supportive lifestyle behaviors. Tune into this episode to hear how Better Therapeutics are creating new digital treatments to reverse the progression of cardiometabolic disease, improve quality of life and inform clinical decisions. In this episode, we cover: Patient experience using digital therapeutics for type 2 diabetes Nutritional CBT – Better Therapeutics innovative new form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Why companies are opting to create Prescription Digital Therapies rather than self-managed lifestyle apps What's next in the Better Therapeutics pipeline and how these decisions are made The future of Digital Therapeutic infrastructure Guest Links and Resources: Connect with Mark Berman on LinkedIn | Twitter Visit bettertx.com Host Links: Connect with Eugene Borukhovich: Twitter | LinkedIn Connect with Chandana Fitzgerald, MD: Twitter | LinkedIn Connect with YourCoach.health: Website | Twitter Check out Shot of Digital Health with Eugene and Jim Joyce: Website | Podcast App HealthXL: Website | Twitter | Join an Event Season 2 of Digital Therapeutics Podcast would not be possible without the support of leading DTx organizations. For the first time, Surfing NASH takes a deep dive into the prospect of digital therapeutics, their ability to drive outcomes and the critical success factors for proper use and deployment. This is an increasingly apt topic which intermittently surfaces on the podcast but has never featured at the center of conversation. The Surfers are joined by Naim Alkhouri and two new guests with prominent focus in this space: Joe Rubinsztain, CEO and Co-Founder of ChronWell, and Mark Berman, CMO of Better Therapeutics. In this session, the group continues to discuss the benefits behind having an app where patients are in command of their wellness journey. Roger Green prompts Mark to further detail the Better Therapeutics product deployed in the feasibility study of cognitive behavioral therapy for improved liver health. Mark confirms that the product used was effectively the same which was used in their trial to demonstrate meaningful changes in blood sugar control for Type 2 diabetic patients. He reiterates the behavioral similarities that often underlie cardiometabolic conditions. Their thesis is that with the right support or therapy to address these behaviors, we can target multiple conditions simultaneously. Mark explains that the challenge therein lies in demonstrating from a regulatory perspective that this is an evidence-based form of prescriptive therapy.Louise spurs comments around the idea that transparency in patient participation is enhanced when levels of comfort and trust for a process are high. She goes on to describe an app she is developing called MyLife365.me. This is a free lifestyle app that tracks how your daily life choices of food, drink and exercise impacts your liver health. While this session features ideas around both the enormous potential and daunting challenges behind the world of digital health and digital therapeutics, the panelists provide rich insights which remain optimistic. These are big questions with far-reaching implications for the future of medicine. If you enjoy this topic and would like to learn more, we kindly invite you to leave a review on your preferred listening platform. We also encourage our audience to write us questions to include your on-ground experiences and ideas in the weekly discourse. Thank you for your continued support - stay safe and surf on!

The Surfers are joined by Naim Alkhouri and two new guests with prominent focus in this space: Joe Rubinsztain, CEO and Co-Founder of ChronWell, and Mark Berman, CMO of Better Therapeutics. Naim leads this conversation by elaborating on his involvement in a feasibility study with Better Therapuetics on use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for improving liver health. Mark and his team partnered with two of Naim's clinics to conduct the study over the course of three months. Their aim was to recruit participants from a specialty clinic setting who exhibit a range of Fatty Liver disease states and develop data to understand the effects of their therapies on the liver and cardiometabolic condition. Naim discusses why they chose targeting MRI-PDFF as a primary outcome measure. He explains that while a 90-day window is restrictive in terms of identifying fibrosis improvement, changes in AST and ALT were examined in addition to analysis of FibroScan metrics. It's noted that increased engagement with the app correlated with improved weight and liver enzyme values. Naim goes on to share ideas around implementing combination therapies which harness the unique utility of digital apps with agents like resmetirom or semaglutide. From here, the session opens up to impressions and questions of the other panelists. Jörn Schattenberg highlights quality of life as a valuable endpoint and Louise comments on the benefit behind what's described as a “non-medical” approach where patients are in command of their wellness journey. Roger Green asks Mark to expand on the premise and deployment of Better Therapeutic's curated cognitive behavioral therapy....If you enjoyed this episode and would like to learn more about digital therapeutics, we kindly invite you to leave a review on your preferred listening platform. The Surfers are joined by Naim Alkhouri and two new guests with prominent focus in this space: Joe Rubinsztain, CEO and Co-Founder of ChronWell, and Mark Berman, CMO of Better Therapeutics. In this conversation, Joe details the inception of ChronWell and the company's mission of assisting providers and insurers to deliver optimal care beyond the medical practice with teams empowered by scalable technology. These compounding ideas originate in the advent of electronic health records in the 90s. At the time, many failed to understand the utility in transitioning from paper to digital. Today, the potential of digital health burgeons with opportunity. Joe envisions a future where “computers are treating simple, delimited diseases in a well designed pathway which is augmenting the ability of a doctor to deliver.” He goes on to discuss the role of insurers in this future and explains the nuances which align ChronWell's identity as a digital platform. Jörn Schattenberg commends the term “augment” because of the need to leverage all tools available in identifying the swathes of unmet patients.Joe highlights that ChronWell is partnering with both primary care providers and specialists to build understanding around the full spectrum of disease. When considering new generation tools to treat conditions like NAFLD and NASH, he asserts that “we need to think broadly about activating the ecosystem” and removing any friction for the health care provider to utilize. This leads Naim to comment on the importance of still striving to find solutions for all Fatty Liver patients and not just those with clinically significant fibrosis. ...If you enjoyed this episode and would like to learn more about digital therapeutics, we kindly invite you to leave a review on your preferred listening platform. Both Joe and Mark are physicians by training with unique interests which led them down fascinating paths. Joe discloses he is a “computer scientist at heart.” Mark shares that he has always had a passion for nutrition and behavior change. Mark goes on to elaborate on his work today, underscoring a fundamental idea at the foundation of Better Therapeutics. Much of cardiometabolic diseases - including NAFLD - is rooted in behavior. While both primary care and specialty clinics absorb the consequences, neither is adequately equipped to facilitate society-wide behavioral change. Better Therapeutics exists to answer this dilemma by developing forms of what's called Prescription Digital Therapies. Representing a new treatment modality, the use of digital therapeutics under physician supervision can enable digitally-delivered behavioral therapy that is prescribed, reimbursed and accessible to patients in need through the use of a smartphone. Last year, the company announced positive results of a pivotal trial in Type 2 diabetes which demonstrated the use of a Prescription Digital Therapeutic to have clinically meaningful changes in blood sugar control. The company has also expanded its efforts by applying Prescription Digital Therapeutics to combat the swelling burden of NAFLD and NASH. To do so, Mark and his team partnered with two of Naim's clinics to conduct a feasibility study over the course of three months. Their aim was to recruit participants from a specialty clinic setting who exhibit a range of Fatty Liver disease states and develop data to understand the effects of their therapies on the liver and cardiometabolic condition. Dr. Mark Berman is the Chief Medical Officer at Better Therapeutics, using a prescription digital therapeutic to treat diseases caused by human behavior, particularly type II diabetes. While PDT model might be expected to be effective with younger patients, clinical trial data is revealing that older patients 60+ are getting the most benefit in blood sugar reduction from this approach. Mark elaborates, "We are, at Better Therapeutics, trying to pioneer a prescription digital therapeutics platform with the intent of treating a whole host of cardiometabolic conditions, starting first with type II diabetes. Then moving on to other related cardiometabolic conditions that all share their roots in health behaviors that really drive the pandemic of disease that we're seeing in cardiometabolic health. And so, at Better Therapeutics, we're bringing about this platform to enable scalable means of treating those root causes of cardiometabolic conditions." "The notion of prescription digital therapeutic is that instead of prescribing yet another drug to help those types of patients, they're going to prescribe an FDA regulated mobile medical app, a prescription digital therapeutic, which is easy to fill, and it comes directly onto the patient's smartphone. And from there, it's the job of the digital therapeutic to really personalize the therapy for the patient. We don't believe that the providers have the time or the ability to really get very granular into the nature of the behavioral therapy. We really need to rely on the digital therapeutic to do that personalized work about what behaviors to target and how to be effective in each patient." @Better_TX #DigitalTherapeutics #DigitalHealth #PDT #PrescriptionDigitalTherapeutic #Type2Diabetes #MobileHealth BetterTX.com Download the transcript here

Today a jury acquitted Kyle Rittenhouse on all counts in last summer's shootings in Kenosha, Wis. We talk about the verdict, what it means and why this trial captivated the nation. Read more:After three and a half days of deliberation, jurors in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse have found the 18 year-old not guilty on all charges — including homicide and reckless endangerment. Rittenhouse fatally shot two people and shot and wounded a third during a protest against police conduct in Kenosha, Wis., in August 2020. Rittenhouse, who is White and was 17 at the time of the shootings, said he was acting in self defense. National reporter Mark Berman says the prosecution and defense presented dramatically different narratives of the shootings. And Kim Bellware reports from outside the Kenosha courthouse, where a crowd is gathering in support of the family members of the people shot by Rittenhouse.Gun control groups and racial justice activists are calling the verdict a dangerous decision. The parents of Anthony Huber, one of the people fatally shot by Rittenhouse, said in a statement they are “heartbroken and angry” over the verdict. “We watched the trial closely, hoping it would bring us closure,” they said. “That did not happen.”Follow The Washington Post's live coverage of the Rittenhouse trial here. On the call, Irving, who is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in February, expressed his opposition to the league's plan to resume the 2019-20 season in Orlando, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium."I don’t support going into Orlando," Irving reportedly said. "I’m not with the systematic racism and the bulls--t. Something smells a little fishy."Charania reports that Irving also said he's "willing to give up everything" for social reform. However, Lebron James doesn’t believe those things are mutually exclusive.James believes he can play basketball and affect social change all at once, Amick reports.“He wants to keep making his mark off the court. He wants to play basketball. And as has always been the case, he clearly believes he can do both at the same time.”Also in the episode, Ginny Fuchs, U.S. Olympic boxer, won't face punishment for a positive drug test after officials say she accidentally ingested banned substances through sex.According to TMZ,USADA launched an investigation after tested positive for drugs and said it was all because she was having sex her boyfriend without protection.Turns out she wasn't lying ... USADA officials say her positive sample did, in fact, come through intercourse.“I had no idea that you could get contaminated through intimate contact," Fuchs said in an interview with Fox 26's Mark Berman. "And I've just learned a lesson about this now and I want other athletes to learn from my mistake."Well, we didn’t know it’s possible but it looks like it is. So she will face no penalty for a positive drug test. All this and more - in the new exciting episode of “Bleav in sports gossip” with Simonna.Follow our host on Twitter @Simonna and Instagram @TheRealSimonnaAnd let’s stay connected!

The official results will be certified and submitted to the Secretary of the Commonwealth by Friday, March 6. The results when available will also be found on the Franklin Town Clerk page and Franklin Matters. Thanks to my co-hosts Jim Derrick, Frank Falvey. Robots. What are they? Just a new sort of tool, qualitatively different kinds of tools that do things we neither expect nor intend, new kinds of beings? With the incipient explosion of complex robots, we may need to re-examine the way law uses and understands intention, responsibility, causation, and other basic concepts. We’re joined by Ryan Calo, who has achieved the outrageously awesome feat of earning a living thinking about robots. (It’s pronounced Kay-low. So Joe got this one right.)
