[2:57] Joining us today to discuss the role that sustainability efforts can play in managing supply chain risk is Nicole Sherwin, the Chief Impact Officer at EcoVadis, a provider of business sustainability ratings and insights. There's much to discuss about sustainability, ESG, and more! [3:17] Interview! Nicole Sherwin, welcome to RIMScast! [3:40] Nicole holds that businesses have a unique opportunity to magnify the positive social and environmental impacts of the things they do and where they engage. [3:56] Nicole is especially passionate about sustainable supply chains and the B2B relationship between buyers and suppliers. Procurement, the function that works with suppliers, holds a lot of power, in deciding which suppliers to spend money with. [4:13] Procurement wants to work with suppliers who can demonstrate they are strong partners in all senses of the word, but increasingly in managing their business's sustainability. [4:22] It can reduce risk, increase resilience, and open collaboration opportunities for procurement teams to drive growth and value for their business. [4:35] Procurement can leverage sustainability innovations of products and services of their suppliers into the design and selling of their products and services, which helps them meet the demands of customers and unlock new markets. That excites Nicole. [4:59] EcoVadis is a purpose-driven company, as stated in its corporate bylaws. Its purpose is to guide all companies toward a sustainable world. [5:14] Nicole's role as Chief Impact Officer is similar to a Chief Sustainability Officer. Part of her role is responsibility for implementing best-in-class sustainability practices internally. Some of those practices are set science-based carbon reduction targets. [5:31] EcoVadis runs a program with its suppliers to engage them in sustainable practices. [5:35] The bigger impact EcoVadis can have is via its solutions and driving sustainability transformation with its customers. EcoVadis is dedicated to embedding sustainability data and intelligence into business decisions. [5:50] EcoVadis has sustainability ratings and data it provides to help businesses benchmark themselves and improve their performance on environmental and social topics. It focuses on global supply chains and procurement organizations that engage their suppliers. [6:08] The impact EcoVadis has is as an enabler to guide companies to improve their practices on decarbonization, working conditions, and human rights, to create stronger sustainability performance with more resilient supply chains. [6:19] KPIs are important ways to measure. Action can be even more important. Don't wait to get the right measurement or figure out how to measure. Get to action, maybe specifically on decarbonization, where some of the metrics and KPIs might be hard to get to. [6:46] Nicole believes there are many risks to global supply chains. Some are geopolitical instability, tariffs impacting trade, and increased cyber attacks on critical infrastructure as things are becoming more digitalized. [7:05] Nicole mentions four sustainability topics. The first is climate-related risks, including extreme weather events, natural disasters, and long-term climactic changes, like rising temperatures and sea levels. Climate impacts raw material availability or shortages. [7:27] Droughts and changes in weather affect agricultural productivity. Weather could be linked to transportation and distribution disruption with infrastructure damages and closure of routes that impact business continuity. [7:45] The second sustainability topic is human rights and forced labor risks. These can be hard to detect. EcoVadis customers, working with their supply chain, have a strong focus on identifying and remediating those risks. [8:02] The third sustainability topic is the lack of transparency in the supply chain. Many companies are only scratching the surface of the potential risks as they engage their direct or tier-one suppliers. Behind the tier-one supplier are different products and raw materials. [8:23] How do you understand who those suppliers are and what are their ethical standards for sourcing and labor practices? [8:30] The fourth sustainability topic is ESG or sustainability supply chain regulations. Supply chains are complex. They're global. They could go deep into the multi-tier. Getting supply chain data needed for compliance is also complex. [8:45] The ESG regulation space is evolving. It's a moving target, both in the U.S. and in Europe. Being late or not being prepared for these regulations is a risk. [9:01] Plug Time! The Spencer Educational Foundation's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved in part by its collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [9:21] Since 2010, Spencer has awarded over $3.3 million in general grants to support over 130 student-centered experiential learning initiatives at universities and RMI non-profits. [9:35] Spencer's 2026 application process will open on May 1st, 2025, and close on July 30th, 2025. General Grant awardees are typically notified at the end of October. [10:40] Let's Get Back to Our Interview with Nicole Sherwin of EcoVadis! [11:02] Organizations can focus on sustainable procurement, creating an end-to-end program with suppliers, identifying where the risk is, assessing the performance, closing the gaps, and driving improvements on ethical, social, and environmental topics. That's a key foundation. [11:22] This can be done with on-site audits, online questionnaires, certifications that can be collected, and verification technology. Companies are deploying targeted engagements with suppliers that align with their corporate sustainability goals. [11:39] Decarbonization of the supply chain is a key sustainability goal. It starts by understanding a supplier's carbon footprint. [11:47] A vast majority of the supply chain is small-to-medium companies (SMEs) in emerging markets. They don't know where to start calculating their Scope 1 and Scope 2 indirect emissions. There are a lot of carbon estimators that can support suppliers to calculate those. [12:03] These estimates can be used by procurement organizations to calculate their Scope 3 emissions. [12:11] Nicole talks of transitioning to renewable energy sources, energy-efficient buildings, and manufacturing equipment, depending on the industry, optimizing transport, and localizing sourcing. Can you get closer to the source from the suppliers you're working with? [12:34] Look for eco-friendly materials that can be reused and recycled at the end of life. Use life-cycle assessments (LCA). Some tools can be used to support sustainable product design. [12:58] Life cycle assessments require a level of expertise. Tools and technologies for LCA are becoming much more advanced and make it easier for SMEs to adopt at-scale deployments across multiple product areas. [13:26] Dimensions of ROI can be incorporated into sustainability. The centerpiece of sustainability is looking at the environmental and social impacts of materials. Figuring ROI on a sustainability initiative is complex. [14:12] EcoVadis did a report with Bain, “ESG Financial Performance.” Companies at the forefront of working on sustainable procurement have a profitability margin of three percentage points above those who don't focus on their suppliers' environmental and ethical practices. [14:32] That research also showed that companies in natural resources, transportation, or industrial goods that had a high EcoVadis rating on their sustainability performance had higher EBITDA margins. [14:53] Nicole says, succeeding with sustainability means thinking about it as an integrated approach to solving these core business challenges. Sustainability can reduce risk, increase resilience, and drive innovation and sales revenue through the offering of sustainable solutions. [15:24] Plug Time! RIMS Webinars! [16:36] The Conclusion of My Interview with EcoVadis Chief Impact Officer, Nicole Sherwin! [16:51] Nicole shares some sustainability plan pointers. Having a data-driven approach is key, using accurate, verified data to measure progress and inform decision-making. EcoVadis issues a Sustainable Procurement Barometer every three years. It was updated at the end of 2024. [17:10] Companies that were showing a high level of maturity in sustainability and ESG were more than two times more likely to engage key stakeholders strategically with data. The C-Suite cares about KPIs. Being able to show performance and outputs catches their attention. [17:33] Taking a data-driven approach, even if it's starting with a small set of data from proof of concept of deployment can be a way to get their attention and bring in additional investment. Cross-department collaboration is key. Sustainability is a responsibility across the organization. [17:55] We increasingly see that sustainability is integrated into performance bonuses, not just for senior executives, but also for managers across departments. It's a company-wide initiative to drive sustainability. [18:06] In the Sustainable Procurement Barometer, 45% of the suppliers say that they see sustainability as important to their customers and are engaged about it as partners. However, 46% see it as important to their customers but don't find it in their relationship. [18:28] Sometimes Procurement can see a risk in the supply chain we see as important but they don't have enough of a program around embedding collaboration with a supplier. [18:40] Collaboration can be putting it in contract clauses, setting sustainability targets to where they want to see them improve, and running capability building and training in decarbonization. [19:13] Forced labor can lie under the surface if you don't look for it. EcoVadis customers are looking to understand where human rights and forced labor are happening in the supply chain.  [19:29] One effective technology is engaging workers through automated worker surveys and grievance mechanisms, directly to workers through SMS or WhatsApp. It's been extraordinarily powerful, allowing companies to work on remediation efforts. [20:47] Nicole thinks the SEC's decision to pause indefinitely its Climate Disclosure Rules will have an impact on corporate accountability. Companies are not being mandated to disclose on climate. However, from an investor perspective, the demand for disclosure is still there. [21:08] For investors, these regulations are seen in a positive light for those assessing climate-related risk, and wanting to accelerate investment toward a more sustainable economy. They want standardized and comparable data to manage these risks and impacts. [21:27] Companies face a potential loss of investment opportunities if they don't disclose climate impact data in a common format. [21:36] Companies will have to decide if they're going to voluntarily disclose climate-related information or not. They will have to if they want to be considered by investors, or even financial institutions, who are increasingly requesting this kind of information for lending or underwriting. [21:54] There are international standards that continue to emphasize consistent reporting. The Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) is one. The Sustainability Standards Board offers The Climate-Related Risk Disclosure Framework. [22:15] Companies can voluntarily report their climate-related risk using the available frameworks. [22:27] Companies know that there is a reputation risk to transparency. For some companies, up to 90% of their carbon footprint is in their supply chain. Getting that data and driving reductions in their supply chain is complicated. [22:52] The economic driver of investors and access to finance are incentives for companies to disclose climate-related risk data. Each company has to decide. [23:41] Nicole thinks that ESG is under fire in the U.S. However, she believes that the ESG frameworks supported by the risk community help businesses anticipate and manage risks. That's not going anywhere. There's a business imperative here. [24:17] Companies that get this understand and have the experience of how sustainability interconnects to core business goals of risk, resilience, competitiveness, and unlocking new market share, driving new sales with demand for sustainability solutions and products. [24:38] The market's focus on long-term resilience will keep it at the forefront. Those companies that are committing to it will be able to demonstrate resilience and transcend other companies that drop ESG for now. [24:49] We're ending on a hopeful note. [4:57] Spencer Day was on Monday, February 26th! They raised close to $10K, which allows them to award two additional scholarships this year. That's two more students who are studying risk management and insurance, whom we can help to fund their education, make sure they make it through, and get into the industry! A record day! [5:49] #SpencerDay is really catching on in the risk profession for organizations that want to boost their risk departments. [6:17] Megan tells of Spencer's history and purpose. It was founded over 45 years ago with two main goals: to fund the students and talent that are seeking to come into our industry and to attract more talent. Last year, Spencer awarded more program dollars than ever, raised a lot of money, and hit a high-water mark for the gala. [7:05] In 2024, Spencer wants to do it all over again, a little bit better. Most of the programs have been awarded this year already. The scholarships are left to be awarded. Spencer is looking to raise over $3M this year. [7:39] Tandeka says they want the Spencer Educational Foundation to be top-of-mind when people in the industry think about early talent and getting college students into this industry. They are open to partnering with existing non-profit organizations and associations within the industry. Together they can solve the talent crisis in the industry. [8:11] Spencer eventually wants to establish more programs to support college students. It wants to expand to serve the risk management and insurance industry, in the U.S.A. and internationally. They are a small team of only three people, so they will start by hiring a fourth team member they are interviewing for now. [8:47] RIMScast has had educators on the show, including Elle Michelle Hall and David Cisneros. Listen to those two episodes, linked in the show notes, to learn more about being an educator leading a program. [9:30] Spencer provides funding to colleges and universities to develop risk management and insurance courses. Providing money for a risk curriculum exposes more students to careers in the industry and prepares those students better. In 2023, Spencer more than doubled its course development spending. [10:24] In 2024, Spencer has a potential donor who is interested in putting massive dollars into course development. Spencer would love to see RMI 101 taught at every business school. There's no reason these courses shouldn't be within a business degree, taught by risk professionals, for the next generation of risk professionals. [12:37] Tandeka tells what Spencer looks for in a proposal. Besides course development, Spencer offers scholarships, internships, Risk Manager On Campus (RMOC), general grants, and the Spencer RIMS Risk Management Challenge. [12:55] The scholarship is a merit-based program for the top students across the U.S.A. and Canada who are interested in the industry and actively pursuing a career in the industry. Spencer wants to support those students and make it a little easier for them to enter the industry. They award undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. scholarships. [13:19] Students need internships while in college to put all of their knowledge into practice. The industry does not have enough risk management internships. Spencer is attempting to fill that hole within the industry with the internship grants program by creating job opportunities for students. [13:40] About the Dan Kugler Risk Manager On Campus grant. You can donate to support it on the Dan Kugler RMOC page of the Spencer website. The RMOC sends practicing risk managers to campuses to plant the seed in classes of up to hundreds of students and give them an introduction to the risk management industry. [14:20] The General Grants program supports universities and colleges across the U.S.A. and Canada with what they need to attract students to this industry and creating experiential learning opportunities. Several of Megan's professors use the General Grants program to take their students to the annual RIMS RISKWORLD conferences. [14:59] The Spencer RIMS Risk Management Challenge is an international student competition. This year, nine countries from around the world participated. [15:28] Spencer will be at RISKWORLD 2024 in San Diego, from May 5th through May 8th. They will have pickleball on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday they have the Gallagher Golf Tournament and Tandeka will run the first leg of the Risk Management Challenge. On Monday, the final round of the Risk Management Challenge will be from 1:00 to 3:00. [16:36] On Monday night they have the Spencer Soirée, open to everyone. The winners of the Risk Management Challenge will be announced at the Soirée. The top teams will be ranked, one, two, and three and will be presented awards. Tuesday morning they have the Spencer Sedgwick 5K Run. These events are a big part of the fundraising effort. [17:29] RIMS plug time! It's a great time to observe the achievements of women in risk management. Megan was a Spencer Scholar. She received the Part-time Master's Scholarship that Spencer awards, while she was earning her MBA. [20:28] Megan was working part-time in the industry, getting her MBA, and that allowed her to transition from an underwriting role to a key client management role, working with Fortune 100 clients. Now, at Spencer, running the organization, including the financial component, her MBA degree comes in handy. [20:48] In terms of being a woman in the industry, Megan thinks the industry has come a long way. Early in her career, she helped develop women's networks, getting panels together, and elevating issues to senior management. Megan recently noticed a panel on LinkedIn that was all women and the topic was not women in insurance but captives! [21:46] Just seeing women coming together, and being the majority in situations where the topic is not just focused on how to advance women; that, to Megan, is a benchmark of success. She is proud that women are being tapped for their experience, technical ability, client-facing ability, and not just the fact that they're women who persevered. [22:18] Tandeka was fortunate to meet students in her college classes who were transferring to Georgia State University to study actuarial science and she followed them. That was her introduction to this industry. After graduating from Georgia State, she got a job with Marsh. [22:54] Tandeka worked in Marsh's Commercial Insurance Brokerage for five years. She moved on to the non-profit sector, for a student association as a recruiter, to help students get entry-level jobs and internships in the risk management and insurance industry. Tandeka joined Spencer a year and a half ago. It has been amazing!  [23:34] Tandeka has been working in this industry for about 10 years. She has seen a difference over the past 10 years. She didn't see women in senior leadership 10 years ago. She would love to see it progress in the right direction in the future. [24:08] Justin and Tandeka met at RISKWORLD 2022 in San Francisco, just before she was scooped up by Spencer. Everything happens for a reason, Tandeka says. Tandeka acts as an unofficial Spencer ambassador. [25:42] Megan says the students who are applying for our scholarships and taking the courses we are helping to develop are a diverse group. A lot of our funds are going to students from historically underrepresented groups in our industry and minority-serving institutions like HBCUs and Hispanic-serving institutions. The diversity is there. [26:23] Megan likes to say to donors, we can help you get the diversity in the door but you have to make them feel that they belong there. That's where I would like to see the industry go, to have more companies embracing that inclusion piece, and doing a better job internally of building a culture where people feel included and heard. [26:59] Tandeka says she would love for our industry to get to a place where diversity and equity are baked into who we are as an industry. Instead of subsections focused on DEI, I would love for all our companies and organizations to have DEI as part of their core programming; part of what they do every day, where it's not even a discussion. [9:18] Spencer Day brought back their gala in 2022, after being on pandemic hiatus, and honored Neeti Bhalla Johnson. The year was also a high-water mark for fundraising. [9:53] The Spencer Educational Foundation is excited about what it will be able to do in 2023. [10:07] Neeti Bhalla Johnson's Spencer gala award speech was recorded and posted on the SpencerEd.org website. That was very helpful for Justin to watch, preparing to have her on RIMScast. [10:33] Several scholars at the gala came up to Megan to say how great it was to have a woman speaker that looked like them. They don't see that a lot with high honors and big awards. [11:10] Spencer Educational Foundation has been around for over 43 years and is known for its scholarships. Spencer Day raises awareness of the foundation. The foundation is grateful for the corporate support received over the decades. [11:56] The Spencer Educational Foundation needs more individual support. The Foundation is asking for individuals to donate $23.00 for 2023 as a show of support. Spread the word today with #SpencerDay. On other days use #SpencerScholars and #FundingTheirFuture. On Tuesday morning May 2nd, there is the 5K Fun Run.  [15:27] The 2023 Funding Their Future Gala will be on September 14th, in New York City. There is a new venue to be revealed. The honoree will be announced in the coming months. Save the date! There will also be a couple of student speakers. [16:30] The Spencer Foundation will award about $650,000 in 2023 scholarships (over 100 awards) and about $1 million in other 2023 programs, including course development funding to schools for risk management and insurance courses and programs. [17:10] The focus has been on minority-serving institutions, such as HBCUs and Hispanic-serving institutions, to diversify the pipeline of talent. [17:58] Justin introduces his next guests, two recipients of Spencer scholarships at the Funding Their Future Gala of 2022, Anne Bowen and Jamal Evans, who are on the show to talk about the role Spencer has played in this early part of their risk careers. [18:16] Justin welcomes Anne Bowen and Jamal Evans to RIMScast. The last time Anne and Jamal met, they were nervously walking onstage as scholarship award recipients. Anne and Jamal speak of the honor they received and how it felt in front of so many risk and insurance industry executives. [19:34] Anne looks back at the impact Spencer has had on her education, internship, and career, on other students, and professionals. [20:22] Jamal seconds that. For Jamal, the big thing was the financial support while going through undergraduate school. Jamal is a two-time Spencer Scholar, first as a junior, which allowed him to focus on his education and not be bogged down with concern. That yielded successes for Jamal. [20:48] Jamal also has participated in the Mentorship Program and has been helped by the industry professionals he connected with through Spencer. [21:19] Anne offers her advice to students applying now for a Spencer Scholarship. Take that leap of faith, really put yourself out there, and share your story. Every person has a unique story about how they got into this industry. Be your true self. [22:01] Jamal says just go for it. There are always “nerves” when applying and doing the essay requirement. Spencer is there to support future insurance professionals and they're passionate about those who are trying to educate themselves in the insurance industry. [22:24] Take the leap of faith. Be diligent with your essay; be passionate and authentic. It's a great organization with much more opportunities than the financial incentive. [22:49] Jamal thanks all of the Spencer staff, from the people who process the applications to the people who manage the event. Tandeka Nomvete is one individual who stands out. She encouraged him at the Spencer Educational Gala before he spoke and she continues to show him support and direct him to resources and opportunities. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   NAAIA is the National African American Insurance Association and they recently released a report with Marsh McLennan titled The Next Steps on the Journey. It's a great read and it's publicly accessible through the link on this episode's show notes and naaia.org. The Next Steps study is interested in demographics, but it goes far deeper, by exploring the specific experiences of Black and African-American professionals in risk and insurance. This week we chat with Leon Craig about playing Sandra Bollock in the LA production of Everybody's Talking About Jamie and Spencer Day about his brand new album, Broadway by Day.

“If it was on VHS I got to see it” Spencer Day credits his mother and the local video store for igniting his love of musicals. He grew up in a small, conservative town that didn't have much in the way of live musical theater performances. But there was a video store that carried G-rated movies — and classic films. The music from shows like Oklahoma, Singin' in the Rain, and South Pacific planted big dreams of traveling the world inside his young heart. However, it took some time before he realized that singing would be his ticket around the globe. Now Spencer Day is a #1 Billboard jazz/pop singer and songwriter that has played in venues like the Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl and London's West End. He's been praised by Time Out New York, Washington Post, New York Public Radio, and SF Chronicle. But it certainly wasn't a straight trajectory getting to this point. Between a joke audition for Star Search that actually landed him on the show, playing in piano bars, signing and getting dropped by labels, there's been many twists and turns on his path to success. He laughs about performing in the Hollywood Bowl in the same week he played for six people in a blizzard in Ohio. The artist's life is never easy — but it's worth it. Torch song stylist Spencer Day joins host Robin Milling at Henry's restaurant in New York City to talk about his latest release Daybreak; a combination of cover tunes and originals where Spencer blends his signature sultry jazz with a little bit country. He puts his own spin on Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Are Made For Walkin', The Association's Never My Love, Creedance Clearwater Revival's Bad Moon Rising, and Lennon/McCartney's A World Without Love. Spencer tells Robin his originals such as Naturally and You Don't Know You're Lonely pay homage to Roy Orbison and Dusty Springfield. The writings are a reflection of 'one of the most consistently stable and happy periods' of his life. Spencer candidly talks about his struggles with depression and how he has learned to cope with disappointment in a healthier way. As a result he shares his story, involving himself with organizations such as NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness). He says, 'if you're a sensitive and artistic person the world can be a really hard place to be. If you can channel positivity into your art then what you perceive as your weaknesses can be your biggest strengths.' Jason Crane interviews singer-songwriter Spencer Day in the last of three interviews recorded at the 2008 Tanglewood Jazz Festival. Day and his band had just finished their set at the festival, one day after Day joined Marian McPartland on stage for a live taping to celebrate her 90th birthday. That's quite a distance from growing up Mormon in small southwestern towns. Day is nearly finished with his next CD, which includes the Turtle Island String Quartet and a gospel choir performing Day's compositions.
