Today we're getting to know the brass family — the loud, bright, fun-loving cousins of the orchestra. (And yes, I'm a little biased here, since my daughter plays trumpet. There's just something about the sound of a room full of brass players warming up.) We talk about what actually makes an instrument "brass" (hint: it's not the metal), why the trombone is the odd one out with its slide instead of valves, and how each member of the family got its personality — from the bold, attention-grabbing trumpet to the tuba, the gentle giant holding everything up from underneath. You'll also hear a callback to Peter and the Wolf, where the French horn plays the wolf, and a little detour into our family's long love affair with Trombone Shorty (we've driven hours more than once just to hear him play). In this episode, we cover: The one thing every brass instrument has in common (try it yourself — buzz your lips!) No 29. jūlija līdz 1. augustam Rīga pirmo reizi vēsturē kļūs par pasaules trombonu galvaspilsētu, uzņemot Starptautisko Trombonu festivālu 2026 (International Trombone Festival – ITF 2026), pasaulē nozīmīgāko profesionālo forumu, kas veltīts trombonam. Festivāla norisi Latvijā virza starptautiski novērtētais latviešu trombonists, multiinstrumentālists un Starptautiskā Trombonu festivāla 2026 namatēvs Vairis Nartišs, ar kuru "Klasikas" studijā tiekamies pirmdienas "Neatliekamajā sarunā". Vaira Nartiša iniciatīva un sadarbība ar International Trombone Association ļāvusi Rīgai kļūt par vietu, kur šovasar satiksies pasaules trombonu elite, jaunā mūziķu paaudze un Latvijas profesionālie kolektīvi. Vairis Nartišs: Festivāls notiek regulāri, katru gadu kādā citā valstī. Izņēmums bija 2020. gads, kad Osakā plānotais festivāls pandēmijas dēļ tika atcelts. Inta Pīrāga: Vai Rīga uz šo statusu – kļūt par trombonistu galvaspilsētu – tiecas jau sen? Un kas nostrādāja par labu tam, ka tas notiek mūsu valstī? Tas darbiņš man sākās 2016. vai 2017. gadā: tad bija pirmās idejas un pirmā saziņa ar Starptautisko trombona asociāciju. Bija plāns, ka es braucu uz Osakas festivālu skatīties, pētīt, iepazīties, izzināt, uzzināt un pārliecināt visus kungus. Taču viss nobruka, un mūs nolika mājsēdē. Bet vienalga – bija ļoti aktīvs un padziļināts darbs, diezgan daudz asociācijas pārstāvju brauca uz Latviju, lai izpētītu un saprastu Latvijas situāciju. 2025. gada sākumā oficiāli tika parakstīts līgums ar Pasaules starptautisko trombonu asociāciju, un es oficiāli varēju nākt klajā ar paziņojumu, ka Rīgā – pirmoreiz Austrumeiropā – un vairāk nekā pēc desmit gadu pauzes vispār Eiropā notiks Starptautiskais Trombonu festivāls. Lai piedalītos šajā festivālā, svarīgs noteikums ir būt par asociācijas biedru. Cik sen jūs pats tāds esat? Vairāk nekā desmit gadus. Kad vēl strādāju Latvijas Nacionālās operas orķestrī, saņēmu jau pirmos žurnālus no Trombonu asociācijas ar nosaukumu "Trombone": kolēģiem to rādīju, lasījām šīs intervijas, priecājāmies, cik labi būtu, ja arī Latvijā kaut kas tāds notiktu. Te nu mēs 2026. gadā esam nonākuši. Rīgas lidosta šajās dienās sagaida ļoti daudzus trombonistus. Preses relīzē rakstīts, ka Latvijā būs vismaz pieci simti viesu! Tas nav pārspīlēti? Apmēram tā arī būs. No visas pasaules. Vienīgi no Antarktīdas nav, arī Āfrika ir mazāk pārstāvēta. Bet visi pārējie kontinenti ir aptverti. Trombons nav no tiem mazākajiem un vieglākajiem instrumentiem, turklāt tam ir dažādi paveidi. Jūs pats arī spēlējat tādus instrumentus, kuru garums ir četri, pieci metri. Kā ir ar ceļošanu? Kā ietiekat lidmašīnā? Kādreiz biju ļoti nekaunīgs. Kad vēl ceļoju kopā ar Operas orķestri, sagaidīju brīdi, kad pasažierus lidostā izsauca jau personīgi, un ar trombonu salonā gāju ar tādu teikumu: vai nu jūs izdomājat, kur šo trombonu likt, vai arī es kāpju ārā. Un parasti šī lieta tika atrisināta. Šobrīd tas kļūst aizvien sarežģītāk. Beidzamos gadus savu trombonu esmu uztaisījis ar noņemamu zvana daļu, un man ir ļoti, ļoti viltīgs futrālis, kas izskatās pēc vijoles futrāļa. Aizpagājušogad lidoju uz festivālu Amerikā. Lidojums no Rīgas uz Helsinkiem bija ar ļoti mazu lidmašīnu, kurā bija ļoti maz vietas. Tur to stratēģiju nospraudu tādu, ka pirmais ieeju salonā it kā ar vijoli, viltīgi ieslēpos savā vietā un uzreiz sāku tēlot, ka guļu. Ka manis nav. Viens no pēdējiem pasažieriem salonā ienāca viegli iereibis un apaļīgs somu kungs, kurš, redzot, ka viņam un viņa bagāžai vietas nav, diezgan skaļi sāka jautāt, kam, pie velna, pieder šī vijole! Tēloju, ka guļu un neko nezinu, līdz ar to kungs diezgan rupji nolamājās pa visu salonu un viņam vienkārši bija tālāk, jo neviens jau viņam neatbildēja... Līdz ar to ļoti bieži lidmašīnās jāpielieto viltības, bet trombonisti ir diezgan lielas personības, kuri spēj atrast šādus kreatīvus risinājumus tādās situācijās. (Smejas.) Sarunas turpinājumā par to, kāpēc trombonisti kļūst par plašas jomas speciālistiem, kuri nepazīst robežas un kālab tas vajadzīgs; par to, ko atšķirīgu šajā dienās ienesīs Latvija; par komandas darbu un koncerta dalībniekiem. *** Starptautiskais Trombonu festivāls jau vairāk nekā piecdesmit gadus ir nozīmīgākais ikgadējais notikums trombonu pasaulē. Katru gadu tas notiek citā valstī, pulcējot pasaules izcilākos trombonistus, pedagogus, komponistus, studentus un instrumentu ražotājus. Festivāls ir vieta, kur dzimst jaunas muzikālās idejas, profesionālas sadarbības un nākotnes projekti, bet 2026. gadā pirmo reizi tā mājvieta būs Rīga. "Pirms vairākiem gadiem ideja par Starptautisko Trombonu festivālu Rīgā šķita tikai sapnis. Tagad līdz tā sākumam atlikušas vien dažas dienas. Man ir patiess prieks, ka varēsim pasaulei parādīt ne tikai Latvijas mūziķus, bet arī mūsu kultūru, vēsturi un viesmīlību. Ceru, ka šis festivāls kļūs par notikumu, kuru atcerēsimies vēl daudzus gadus," saka festivāla namatēvs Vairis Nartišs. Līdzās pasaules līmeņa koncertiem festivāls piedāvās plašu profesionālo programmu – meistarklases, lekcijas, komponistu darbnīcas, starptautiskas diskusijas, studentu ansambļu koncertus, instrumentu un nošu izdevēju izstādi, kā arī daudzus citus pasākumus. Dani Howard is originally from Hong Kong but she's now a renowned British composer and orchestrator. Her works have been performed by the London Symphony, BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic among others. She won a Royal Philharmonic Society Award for her Trombone Concerto. Her debut album features the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and trombonist Peter Moore. Dani was Resident Artist with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. The Trombone Corner – 2025 Holiday Episode Cohosts Noah Gladstone and John Snell post up by the fireplace with eggnog and a tradition that's equal parts heartfelt and mechanically questionable: Noah lights his custom Trombonorah—a menorah built from a trombone bell, with a few trumpet valves thrown in for reasons that will make sense to exactly no one. From there, it's a holiday-themed conversation that bounces between trombone life, seasonal rituals, gear talk, and the usual detours you'd expect when brass players are left unsupervised.
