Gerard Lancaster raised in Columbia, SC and was taught in the Richland One School System (E.E. Taylor Elementary, Gibbes Middle School and Eau Claire High School). He started playing Trombone at the age of 11 and continues to play today. He also plays, keys, organ, bass, drums, guitar, and other brass instruments. He went to South Carolina State University and graduated with a B.A. in Music Industry. He is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity. He was a band director/music teacher at St. Matthews K8 in St. Matthews, SC and Band Director and Piano Teacher at Eau Claire High School in Columbia, SC. Currently, he is playing professionally on both Trombone, Keys, Organ and Bass in several different wedding and party bands, churches, and also does solo trombone work. Paul mentions some musical instruments when he is talking about speaking in tongues and prophesying to the church at Corinth. This church is seeking spiritual gifts with such passion but they have left out love, in particular, Agape love, or unconditional love. They are more concerned about the spiritual gift they have and whose is better! Paul is making a point that, when one speaks in tongues, they are talking it God and only God can understand it, therefore, the people who hear them gets nothing from it. If they would seek to prophesy instead, they will speak out loud, in a language that all can understand, and the entire body would benefit from what God says through that individual! He uses the flute, trumpet, and harp to clarify his point. He says they are dead; they are useless without someone blowing breath through them or plucking the strings. God wants to use us like these instruments, but He wants us to edify one another with the gift, or gifts, He has given us...not be selfish with them!

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Jeff Bush, director of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, for a conversation about swing music, leadership, ensemble playing, education, and the responsibility that comes with carrying one of American music's great band traditions forward.Jeff first joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra more than two decades ago when Buddy Morrow was leading the band, and after years spent pursuing other musical opportunities, he returned to take over the leadership role. We talk about what that job actually involves today — everything from hiring musicians, coordinating travel, and working with venues to choosing repertoire, writing arrangements, and making sure the band continues to sound authentic without becoming frozen in time.A big part of our conversation centers on feel. Jeff breaks down how the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra sits rhythmically compared with other great bands, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra and Count Basie Orchestra, and why forward motion without rushing is such an important part of swing. We also talk about the relationship between the drummer and lead trumpet, the importance of strong section leaders, and how a great rhythm section can completely change the way an ensemble feels.Jeff also shares the story of how he found the trombone, the influence of teachers who introduced him to great music, and what he learned both at Youngstown State University and the Manhattan School of Music. For more than 25 years, the Downtown Chamber Series (DCS) has presented concerts amidst visual art at venues across downtown Phoenix. The next concerts take place August 29th and 30th at Shepley Bulfinch Architects, and feature trombone, trumpet, piano, and photography.
