LAB-301-Test Ride and Review of the Harley-Davidson Nightster | A Trip to California

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2022 81:32

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we discuss that Harley-Davidson recently flew me to Santa Barbara, California to test ride and review the 2022 Nightster.  It was a very quick 4-day trip, 2 of those days being travel days. Understand, Harley-Davidson paid for the flights, meals, and lodging. However, no contract was mentioned or signed and I was never told what I could or could not say, so I will give you an unbiased real-world biker review as always. Now, I had many questions about this new Nightster and anticipated how it might feel and handle when riding it. There was only one way to find out and it started when I arrived at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort where I'd be staying for the next few days, and I got checked into my room. I quickly made my way to dinner where Harley had set up the "instrument of expression" launch event.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE As I walked around the room this first night I had time to really think about what the new 2022 Nightster means now and to the future of Harley-Davidson as a company. I really had time to reflect on Harley-Davidson's rich history with their bikes of the past, and in many ways, they've carried much of that history over and put it into their present-day motorcycles. As Willie G. Davidson once said, "Everything we do is the notion that form follows function-but both report to emotion" and I wanted to see if that would be the case with the Nightster. But, what do these new water-cooled Revolutions Max engines in the Pan America, Sporster S, and now the 2022 Nightster with the 975T version really mean?  Is Harley fazing out the traditional big V-Twin air-cooled engines? During my time in and around Santa Barbara, I'd get these questions answered and a whole bunch more.  Make sure to watch my review video to find out the answers.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! I found the 2022 Nightster to be a fast nimble bike that was very capable of carving up twisty canyon roads.  The horsepower may be intimidating to new riders, but that can be mitigated by the different ride modes.  The bike can be tamed down by using Rain Mode, then a rider could progress to Road Mode, and eventually Sport Mode.  The Nightster was designed with customization in mind.  I think Harley did a great job designing it. NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Harley-Davidson 2022 Nightster! Is This The Beginning? Test Ride & Review! There were a few negatives I found, and admittedly they are a bit nit-picky.  First, the front-mounted radiator is not visually appealing to me personally.  I know it's required to get the performance and horsepower out of the engine.  I guess I'm old-school and I'll just have to learn to get used to the radiator.  Secondly, the plastic trim on top of the tank (airbox) looks cheap and is a bit flimsy.  I would have liked to see something made of metal in its place.  And lastly, the control switch housings were also made of plastic.  I would prefer metal ones like on my Street Glide Special.   Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! LAB-397-Motorcycle Battery Jump Starters- Indian Sales Down & Tariffs on Harley

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2025 81:13

In this podcast episode we discuss several topics.  Indian Motorcycle sales were down for the forth quarter of 2024, Harley-Davidson dealing with tariffs, and motorcycle jump starters.  Indian Motorcycles, founded in 1901, is one of America's oldest and most iconic motorcycle brands. After dominating the market in the early 20th century with models like the Scout and Chief, the company struggled and ultimately ceased operations in 1953. Over the next five decades, several revival attempts failed until Polaris Industries acquired the brand in 2011. Polaris successfully relaunched Indian, preserving its heritage while expanding with modern designs and a broad lineup of seven motorcycle families. The introduction of the FTR1200 in 2019 marked its only major innovation in recent years. The brand reestablished itself as a serious rival to Harley-Davidson, especially in the North American market, where it achieved record sales of 43,219 units in 2022. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE However, Indian's resurgence has hit a plateau. Sales have declined since 2022, with global registrations dropping to around 37,000 units annually. In 2024, the downturn steepened, with an overall decline of 12.4% through August, including a 15% dip in the U.S. and 9.9% in Europe. The brand's heavy reliance on the maturing U.S. market, which accounts for 64% of its business, and a lack of consistent product innovation, are seen as key factors in its recent struggles. Despite its rich legacy and strong branding, Indian faces challenges in sustaining momentum without broader international expansion and a more aggressive approach to new model development. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! With President-elect Donald Trump suggesting a 25% tariff on goods from countries like Mexico, Canada, and China, concerns are rising about how such measures might impact American companies—Harley-Davidson being a prime example. During Trump's first term, Harley was caught in a trade war between the U.S. and the EU, leading to potential tariffs as high as 56%, which the company estimated would cost over $200 million annually. Though it initially avoided these tariffs by exporting from its Thailand plant, recent EU rulings have closed that loophole. With Harley-Davidson's international operations accounting for nearly 40% of its motorcycle sales—particularly in Europe and Asia—new tariffs or retaliation from other countries could severely affect its bottom line. Beyond international trade tensions, there's now speculation about the U.S. imposing tariffs on Harley's own Thai-built bikes being sold domestically for the first time—an unprecedented move that could reignite past threats. While some voices continue to dramatize Harley's situation, citing minor downturns as existential threats, the company remains profitable, recently reporting a $119 million quarterly profit. Still, its visibility as an iconic American brand makes it a convenient target in trade disputes. As global politics shift, Harley-Davidson must navigate both economic realities and its symbolic status, balancing manufacturing strategies and diplomatic crossfire. LAB395-2025 Harley-Davidson Cruiser Lineup | Ride and Review-Austin, Texas Trip

In this episode, we talk about the 2025 Harley-Davidson Cruiser lineup. I had the opportunity to attend the press event in Austin, Texas, and ride these new cruisers. Keep in mind I only got a few hours with these bikes, but I give you my impressions of the six cruisers that were upgraded. All six received the Milwaukee-8 117 engine and rider safety enhancements.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Test Ride Impressions Street Bob 117: A Lightweight & Agile Cruiser Ideal for shorter riders: At 5'8", I found the ergonomics to be comfortable with mid-controls and a well-positioned handlebar. Analog Speedometer with Digital Readout: Displays essential ride data, including RPMs, fuel range, and tire pressure monitoring. Torque & Power: The Classic variant of the Milwaukee-Eight 117 delivers 98 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque, making it a punchy yet easy-to-handle ride. Breakout 117: A Bold & Stylish Power Cruiser Fat rear tire: While it adds to the aggressive look, it makes handling a bit heavier, especially in corners. Forward Controls & More Vibration: Riders experience more road feedback through handlebars and pegs. Custom Variant Power: 104 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque, with a more rev-happy powerband. Single Front Brake Setup: Works well but lacks the stopping power of dual-disc setups. Fat Boy 117: Classic Comfort & Power More Comfortable for 5'8" Riders: The handlebar placement is better than the Breakout, allowing a more relaxed posture. Floorboards Instead of Pegs: Adds comfort for long-distance cruising. Lean Angle Considerations: 25.6-degree lean angle limits aggressive cornering but suits the bike's cruising nature. Low Rider ST & Low Rider S: Performance-Oriented Cruisers High Output Variant: 114 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque, delivering a more aggressive ride. Inverted Front Forks: Improve handling and front-end stability. Low Rider ST vs. S: ST: Features a club-style fixed fairing and saddlebags for light touring. S: A more stripped-down, performance-driven variant. Ergonomics: At 5'8", I found the bars well-placed and mid-controls comfortable, but longer trips might benefit from forward controls. Heritage Classic: The Underrated Tourer Classic Styling: Traditional Harley look with leather saddlebags and a detachable windshield. Most Comfortable Seat in the Cruiser Lineup: Ideal for long rides. Perfect for Touring: Though classified as a cruiser, it's a mid-level touring bike with great wind protection and relaxed ergonomics. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Safety & Rider Aids Advanced Rider Safety Enhancements All 2025 Harley-Davidson cruisers come with modern rider safety aids: Cornering & Straight-Line ABS & Traction Control ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) Drag-Torque Slip Control I had the chance to test these features in controlled conditions, and they proved highly effective in preventing full loss of traction. Upgraded Handlebar Controls Cruise Control Now Standard across all cruiser models. Refined Switch Housings: Mode selection, turn signals, and traction control toggles are more intuitive. Cable Clutch vs. Hydraulic Clutch Harley continues to use cable-operated clutches, which require periodic adjustments. While functional, I strongly prefer the consistency of a hydraulic system, which would be a welcome upgrade in future models. Final Thoughts: Which 2025 Harley Cruiser is Right for You? Best for Performance Riders: Low Rider ST / Low Rider S If you prioritize aggressive handling, power, and sportier ergonomics, these models are for you. Best for Classic Cruiser Fans With Windshield: Heritage Classic If comfort, traditional styling, and a versatile ride are your priorities, this is an excellent choice. Best for Aggressive Styling & Chopper Look: Breakout 117 If you want bold styling with a fat rear tire and strong acceleration, the Breakout is a head-turner. Best Entry-Level Cruiser: Street Bob 117 A lightweight, easy-handling bike with great ergonomics for shorter riders. Best for All-Day Comfort Without A Windshield: Fat Boy 117 With its plush seat and floorboards, the Fat Boy is perfect for relaxed cruising. Conclusion After two full days of testing the 2025 Harley-Davidson cruiser lineup, it's clear that each model caters to different riding styles. Whether you're looking for a performance machine, a laid-back cruiser, or something in between, Harley's 2025 lineup has something for everyone. LAB-394-2025 Indian Motorcycles 112 PowerPlus | Ride and Review-Las Vegas, Nevada Trip

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2025 65:03

The 2025 Indian PowerPlus lineup has arrived, and I had the opportunity to test these bikes in the stunning landscape of Lake Las Vegas and the Valley of Fire. With an upgraded 112 cubic inch PowerPlus motor, new rider-assist technologies, and refined aerodynamics, Indian has taken their motorcycles to the next level. This review will cover the engine performance, ride quality, handling, technology, and new safety features introduced in this lineup. The New 112ci PowerPlus Engine: More Power, More Fun Indian has built upon its 108ci liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine, upgrading it to a 112ci V-twin that delivers: 126 horsepower at 5,500 RPM 133 foot-pounds of torque at 3,600 RPM 60-degree V-twin configuration Overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, and dual throttle bodies Compared to the 2023 Indian Pursuit Dark Horse I tested for a year, the 2025 PowerPlus engine offers more power and better low-end torque. The real question is how this translates to real-world performance, which I explored during the test ride. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE First Impressions: Chieftain PowerPlus & Redesigned Fairing I was assigned the 2025 Indian Chieftain PowerPlus, and right away, the bike felt incredibly well-balanced. Despite its size, it was easy to manage, and the redesigned batwing fairing is noticeably sleeker and more aerodynamic. The new fairing design includes: Separated dual vents for better wind management More refined lower sections for improved airflow Wind tunnel-tested shape for high-speed stability While the sharknose fairing remains largely unchanged, the batwing updates make a real difference in handling and rider comfort. Riding Performance: How Does the 112 PowerPlus Feel? Once in the saddle, I could instantly feel the higher-revving nature of the PowerPlus engine. The torque kicks in at 3,600 RPM, pushing the rider back in the seat. This engine thrives in the higher RPM range, delivering a sporty, performance-driven feel. At 5,500 RPM, the bike produces 126 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful V-twin touring motors available. For those who prefer a more traditional low-end torque experience, Indian still offers the Thunderstroke air-cooled engine on select models. This gives buyers a choice between classic American cruising or high-performance touring. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Suspension & Braking: Inverted Forks and Radial-Mounted Brembos Suspension Upgrades Front: 43mm inverted forks with 5.1 inches of travel, offering more rigidity and precision than conventional forks Rear: Fox Monoshock with 4.5 inches of travel The inverted forks provide: Less flex under braking More precise steering feedback Better handling in aggressive riding situations Braking System Dual 320mm semi-floating rotors (front) 298mm floating rotor (rear) Brembo radial-mounted calipers Radial-mounted brakes provide better rigidity and performance compared to standard axial-mounted ones, making this a high-performance touring machine. Innovative products for Harley-Davidson & Goldwing Affordable chrome, lighting, and comfort products Ciro 3D has a passion for design and innovation Rider Assist Features: New Innovations for 2025 Indian has introduced some of the most advanced rider-assist features on an American-made V-twin. These include: Standard Features ABS 6-axis IMU lean-angle detection with traction control and ABS. Drag torque control to prevent rear-wheel lockup on aggressive downshifts New for 2025 Hill Hold Control – Keeps the bike from rolling backward when stopped on an incline. Electronically Linked Braking – If the rider applies only the front or rear brake, the system automatically applies the other for better balance, stopping, and safety. Blind Spot Detection – Warns riders with mirror-mounted yellow LED indicators when a vehicle is in their blind spot. Rear Collision Warning – Alerts riders when a vehicle is following too closely and pulses the brake light to get the driver's attention. These safety features make a significant difference, particularly for riding in heavy traffic conditions. Comfort, Ergonomics, and Ride Quality The 2025 Chieftain PowerPlus offers a well-designed rider triangle, making it comfortable for long-haul rides. Stock seat: Well-padded with excellent lower back support Floorboards: Spacious and positioned well for comfortable leg placement Adjustable windscreen: Allows riders to set their preferred wind protection One ergonomic improvement Indian could consider is adjusting the brake pedal placement slightly forward for better foot positioning. Sponsor-Butt Buffer CLICK HERE Want to ride longer? Tired of a sore and achy ass? Then fix it with a high-quality Butt Buffer seat cushion? Technology & Infotainment: Ride Command System The 7-inch Ride Command system remains largely unchanged from previous Indian models, offering: GPS Navigation Bluetooth Connectivity Apple CarPlay Customizable Ride Modes (Rain, Standard, Sport) While functional, the system could use an update. Given the premium price of these bikes, a fully digital dashboard with faster processing and a smoother interface would be a welcome upgrade. Final Thoughts: A High-Performance Touring Machine After spending an entire day riding through the Valley of Fire, I can confidently say the 2025 Indian PowerPlus lineup delivers a fun, powerful, and well-engineered riding experience. What Indian Got Right More horsepower and torque than the previous 108ci motor Sleek, aerodynamic batwing and shark nose fairing Inverted forks and radial-mounted Brembo brakes Blind spot detection and rear collision warning, a first on an American V-twin Improved heat management compared to past models Areas for Improvement Ride Command system needs an update Cable clutch should be upgraded to a hydraulic system Large radar unit on the rear could be better integrated for aesthetics Who Is This Bike For? This bike is best suited for riders who want: A powerful, high-performance touring motorcycle The latest rider assist features for safety and comfort A sporty V-twin experience with high-revving power For those who prefer a traditional low-end torque cruiser, the Thunderstroke models might be a better fit. Final Verdict: Worth It? If you are looking for a modern, high-performance bagger that retains the classic Indian motorcycle charm, the 2025 PowerPlus lineup is an excellent choice. This bike delivers an exciting riding experience, blending power, comfort, and cutting-edge technology. LAB-392-Heated Motorcycle Riding Gear | Gerbing, First Gear, Etc.

In this podcast episode, we dive deep into motorcycle heated riding gear. Riding in cold weather can be uncomfortable without proper gear. Over the years, I've tested a range of heated gear—from budget to premium—and have real-world experience as a police motor officer and personal rider. In this guide, I'll walk you through heated gear options, share insights, and explain why Gerbing gear stands above the rest. 1. The Problem with Cheap Heated Gear White-Labeled & Generic Gear Many low-cost heated gear products, like Mobile Warming, are white-labeled items from platforms like Alibaba. These products appear across Amazon and eBay, rebranded and sold under different names. The Issue: Cheap materials lead to quick failure, poor battery performance, and safety concerns. Flimsy Batteries & Chargers Cheap heated gear often uses low-quality lithium-ion batteries. Problems include: Fire hazard concerns. Poor charge indication (no light or status). Chargers that break quickly. Batteries don't last and will have to be replaced often. Tip: Avoid relying on inexpensive gear for long-term riding needs. 2. Why Gerbing Sets the Standard Unmatched Quality & Reliability Gerbing heated gear is tested, durable, and built for serious riders. Their batteries, chargers, and construction far outperform budget brands. Gerbing 7V Soft Shell Vest Versatile & Stylish: Wearable on motorcycles, outdoor activities, or day-to-day tasks. Battery Performance: High: ~2 hours Medium: ~3-4 hours Design Note: Should fit snugly to maximize heat transfer. 3. In this podcast episode, we discuss the 2025 Harley-Davidson model release of the touring models.  This is what we refer to as a soft release, meaning these are the models held over from 2024 with no real changes except for color.  We talk about what is released so far and we give our predictions on what will be released during the virtual launch held on January 23, 2025.   As of January 2nd, Harley-Davidson revealed the following six models for 2025: Street Glide Road Glide Road King Special Freewheeler (trike) Tri Glide Ultra (trike) Road Glide 3 (trike) SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE These models appear to be largely carryovers from 2024, with no significant mechanical or cosmetic changes. This “soft launch” is typical for Harley-Davidson, saving the more substantial announcements for their virtual event on January 23rd at 5 PM CST on their YouTube channel. Road Glide 3 & Tri Glide Ultra Interestingly, the Road Glide 3 and Tri Glide Ultra did not see price increases for 2025. The Tri Glide Ultra received updated wheels (19-inch front, 18-inch rear) and is now available in black trim for the first time, offering additional color options. Trim and Paint Options Harley-Davidson continues to emphasize black trim, offering additional color options compared to chrome models. However, this trend has frustrated traditionalists who favor chrome aesthetics. Notable colors for 2025 include: Mystic Shift: A dynamic shade that changes from gunmetal to orange depending on light angles. Whiskey Firestorm & Midnight Firestorm: Featuring ghost flames, exclusive to black trim models. Unfortunately, these unique options are not available for chrome trim enthusiasts. Here's what to watch for: Full Touring Models Will the Road Glide Limited and Ultra Limited finally get the 2024 fairing redesign? Are these models being phased out in favor of a build-to-order system? Speculation suggests customers might start with base models and add touring packages to create full touring bikes. Cruiser and CVO Models The Cruiser lineup has yet to be revealed, leaving room for surprises. The popular 2024 CVO Road Glide ST is also absent from the website. This podcast was recorded live for our beloved Patreon members.  In our private Patreon FaceBook group a member asked others to share tips for new riders.  Lurch and I, as well as the Patreon members in private chat discuss many tips.  Motorcyclists remain an exception to the overall decline in U.S. highway fatalities, according to recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In the first half of 2024, motor vehicle fatalities dropped by 3.2% compared to 2023, with declines across almost all categories, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and passenger vehicle occupants. However, motorcyclist fatalities rose by 1%, standing out as a rare increase alongside a similar rise for individuals over 65. This reflects a long-term trend where fatalities among motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians constitute a growing proportion of overall traffic deaths, while fatalities for occupants of cars and trucks decline. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Modern automotive safety features such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, and adaptive cruise control have significantly improved passenger safety, reducing crash severity. However, motorcycles, even with advanced features, remain inherently less protective in crashes. While some motorcyclists point to distracted drivers as a major cause, self-inflicted risks also play a significant role. Nearly half of fatal motorcycle crashes are single-vehicle incidents, and about 25% involve alcohol, underscoring the importance of rider responsibility in reducing fatalities. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The data serves as a sobering reminder for motorcyclists to prioritize safety. Practicing proper riding techniques, maintaining situational awareness, avoiding alcohol, and investing in training can make a meaningful difference. With motorcycle fatalities on the rise, it's critical for riders to take proactive steps to protect themselves, as the broader road safety improvements have yet to extend meaningfully to their community. While some features come factory-ready from Harley-Davidson, many others are department-specific or added by third-party vendors. Let's dive into the details. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE In addition to police-specific features, I've equipped my bike with several products donated from the Law Abiding Biker™ Store Biker Gripper Cell Phone Mount: The strongest, sleekest motorcycle cell phone mount available. One of the most exciting aspects of this build was getting the green light for some performance upgrades. We installed a Stage One Kit, including a Screamin' Eagle high-flow intake and exhaust system, to improve airflow and enhance performance. Screamin' Eagle Intake and Exhaust: Although we used OEM Harley-Davidson parts, the upgrades significantly improved the bike's performance, making it sound better and increase power.  EFI Remapping and Tuning: After installing the intake and exhaust, we remapped the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) using the Screamin' Eagle tuner. While not our first choice, it got the job done. In the future, we'd recommend the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 tuner, available in our store, for superior performance and ease of use. Comfort and Safety Mods Comfort is key, especially for officers spending long hours in the saddle. The addition of adjustable levers and an extended brake pedal greatly improved both comfort and safety. Adjustable Levers: The PSR Anthem Pro Adjustable Levers offer maximum customization, allowing you to find the perfect adjustment for both the clutch and brake. Extended Brake Pedal: This is one of the most important safety mods we made. LAB-385-Motorcycle Suspension Sag | What It Is And How To Adjust It

In this episode, we discuss motorcycle suspension sag. Suspension sag refers to the amount a motorcycle's suspension compresses under certain conditions, such as the bike's weight alone or the combined weight of the bike and rider. It is a critical setting in motorcycle and vehicle suspension tuning, directly affecting handling, comfort, and stability.   Why Suspension Sag is Important: Handling: Proper sag ensures the suspension is in the optimal range of travel for absorbing bumps and maintaining traction. Comfort: Reduces harshness over bumps and prevents excessive bottoming or topping out of the suspension. Control: Maintains balance between the front and rear suspension, providing predictable handling in turns and on uneven surfaces. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Suspension preload refers to the initial compression applied to a motorcycle's suspension springs before any external forces, such as the weight of the bike or rider, are applied. It adjusts the suspension's starting position, influencing how much it compresses under load. Preload doesn't change the stiffness (spring rate) of the spring itself; it only alters the amount of force required to compress the spring further. How Preload Works: More Preload: Compresses the spring further, making the suspension stiffer initially. This reduces sag and raises the ride height. Less Preload: Reduces spring compression, making the suspension softer initially. This increases sag and lowers the ride height. LAB-384-Is The Shoei Neotec 3 The Best Motorcycle Helmet?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2024 71:41

In this episode, we review the new Shoei Neotec 3 motorcycle helmet.  As a police motorcycle officer, instructor, and avid rider, I've extensively used Shoei Neotec modular helmets since the release of the first version. My daily routine and off-duty adventures have given me ample opportunity to test a variety of modular helmets, and Shoei consistently stands out. In my opinion, modular helmets are unparalleled for their convenience—allowing me to flip up the chin bar to talk to fellow riders or get some airflow during stops, and then easily flip it back down when resuming my ride. Transitioning from Neotec 2 to Neotec 3 Having recently upgraded from the Neotec 2 to the Shoei Neotec 3, I've noticed several significant improvements that other reviews have overlooked. Here's a detailed look at what sets the Neotec 3 apart. Note: You can get a Shoei Neotec 3 in the Law Abiding Biker Store. We'll get it on the way to you ASAP. We're just a bunch of bikers helping bikers.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Key Improvements Enhanced Face Shield Mechanism One of the most notable upgrades in the Neotec 3 is the face shield mechanism. Previous versions featured a slight lock at the bottom detent, but the Neotec 3 introduces a mechanism that securely locks the shield in place, creating a robust seal. You'll hear and feel a satisfying click when the shield locks. A new push-release button under the face shield's center makes this process even more user-friendly. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Centrally Located Thumb Tab In earlier versions, the face shield's thumb tab was positioned on the left side, complicating operation for those with their left hand on the clutch lever and reaching across with their right hand, which tweaked the face shield making it difficult to operate. The Neotec 3 resolves this with a centered thumb tab, enabling smooth, ambidextrous operation. This thoughtful design change significantly enhances usability, making the shield movement effortless. Improved Ventilation Ventilation has also seen improvements. The chin vent now offers two positions instead of one, while the top vent, though lower in profile, maintains the familiar three positions. Additionally, the helmet's rear has been redesigned for a more modern aesthetic. My MotoVlog Setup Video Watch it HERE Retained Features The Neotec 3 retains several features that Shoei fans appreciate. The helmet comes with the reliable anti-fog Pinlock inner face shield, ensuring clear vision in varying weather conditions. Shoei's quick-release ratcheting chin buckle system remains superior to the outdated D-ring chin strap, offering ease of use even with gloves on. If your helmet does have the old D-ring system you can easily replace it with one of our high quality metal to metal ratchet buckle chin straps just like the one used on the Shoei Neotec 3. The internal tinted sun visor continues to operate very smoothly using the external slider buttons. Just use a slider like this on a cheaper helmet and you'll see how refined the Shoei Neotec 3 is.  Comfort and Fit Comfort is paramount in a helmet, and the Shoei Neotec 3 excels in this area. It's the most comfortable and in the top 2 quietest helmets I've worn and feels like a slipper for your head. The premium quality is immediately evident when compared to less expensive, off-brand copies. Model Options The Shoei Neotec 3 is available in three models: the basic Neotec, the Grasp (which I chose), and the Santori. The differences lie in color options, with the Grasp and Santori offering multi-color designs while the basic Neotec comes in solid colors. Note that older Neotec 1 and 2 face shields are not compatible with the Neotec 3 due to design changes. All models and shields are available in the Law Abiding Biker Store. LAB-383-Organic, Semi-Sintered, and Sintered Brake Pads | Pros and Cons

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2024 82:00

In this podcast episode, we dive deep into the different compositions of motorcycle brake pads.  We discuss the pros and cons of organic, semi-sintered, and sintered brake pads.  What does sinter mean?  We're glad you asked.  Sintering is the process of forming a solid mass of material through heat and pressure without melting to the point of liquefaction. This process involves the atoms in materials diffusing across the particle boundaries and fusing together into one piece.  In simple terms, it is combining different materials, usually but not always metals.  We give our opinions on which option is the best.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Organic brake pads are made primarily from non-metallic materials, such as rubber, glass, resin, carbon, and Kevlar fibers. These materials are bound together with a high-temperature resin, creating a compound that provides effective braking performance while remaining quieter and less harsh on the brake rotors than metallic pads. Organic brake pads are often chosen for everyday driving because they are quieter and offer a smoother feel. However, for high-performance or heavy-duty applications (like racing or towing), other materials like semi-metallic or ceramic may be better options due to their greater durability and resistance to heat. Get your brake pads from the Law Abiding Biker Store: BRAKE PADS Semi-sintered brake pads are a hybrid type of brake pad that combines the characteristics of both organic and sintered (metallic) brake pads. These pads contain a mix of organic materials and metallic particles (usually copper or steel) that are bonded under high pressure and heat. This blend creates a balanced pad that offers a middle ground between the smooth, quiet braking of organic pads and the durability and heat resistance of fully sintered metallic pads. Semi-sintered brake pads are ideal for those who want a balance between durability and smooth braking, making them suitable for a range of applications from commuter vehicles to light performance and touring bikes. They're popular in the motorcycle world and in light to moderate performance vehicle applications, where a mix of daily usability and resilience to moderate heat is desired. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Sintered brake pads, also known as metallic brake pads, are made from a high concentration of metal particles (like copper, bronze, or steel) that are fused together under intense heat and pressure. This process, called sintering, creates a dense, highly durable material that performs well under extreme temperatures and heavy loads, making sintered pads ideal for high-performance, heavy-duty, and off-road applications.  Sintered brake pads are best for vehicles used in rugged or high-performance applications where high durability and heat resistance are necessary. In this podcast episode, we review the Alpinestars Convex Tech Fleece zip-up hoodie and the Alpinestars Treq Windbreaker.  We continually test and review products to carry in the Law Abiding Biker Store. These are a couple of items that made the cut.  We also talk about Lurch riding an expert section of the Backroad Discovery Route (BDR).  We are lucky that section two of the Washington BDR runs right through our backyard.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The Alpinestars Convex Fleece has garnered attention as a versatile choice for those who need a hoodie that combines comfort with performance-driven design. Reinforced stitching and quality materials ensure that this hoodie can withstand the wear and tear of both everyday use and more rugged outdoor adventures. Performance on the Road For motorcycle riders, the Alpinestars Convex Fleece excels in providing a balance between warmth and mobility. While it's not a full-on riding jacket, the fleece is ideal for layering under protective gear or for casual rides in mild weather. The moisture-wicking properties help keep you dry, and the fleece lining offers warmth without being bulky, making it a great choice for cooler rides. Pros and Cons Pros: Stylish and versatile design suitable for casual and active wear. High-quality materials ensure long-lasting comfort. The BDR is a type of scenic or adventurous road trip, often focusing on less-traveled, rural, or off-the-beaten-path routes that offer a more intimate and immersive travel experience. Typically, these routes cater to those seeking adventure, natural beauty, and cultural experiences that are off the main tourist path. Backroad discovery routes are popular for road-trippers, motorcyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a slower, more scenic journey over high-speed highways. In the U.S., BDR are specific, mapped-out routes for adventure motorcyclists and off-road vehicle enthusiasts. These routes: Span several states, such as Colorado, Idaho, Utah, and Washington. Are usually designed for multi-day trips. Incorporate various terrains like mountains, deserts, and forests. Are mostly unpaved, involving dirt roads, forest trails, and rocky passes. Include both challenging sections for experienced riders and easier paths for beginners. Each route is usually developed with local input to highlight scenic and historical locations and to support rural economies by guiding travelers toward small towns and local businesses. These routes typically have resources, including GPS tracks, maps, and travel guides, available to help riders safely navigate and enjoy the journey. LAB-381-Don't Use A Lithium Ion Battery Use On A 2024 & Newer Harley Davidson!

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 23, 2024 70:04

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I recently purchased a 2024 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, one of the latest models featuring a redesigned fairing and the new Infotainment Control Unit (IFCU) digital dash system. As someone who values reliability and performance, I opted to replace the stock lead-acid battery with a lithium-ion battery before embarking on a 10-day trip. Over the years, I've tested various lithium-ion batteries and prefer them because they are very lightweight, durable, and efficient.  The First Few Days: Everything Seemed Fine For the first three days of my trip, the Street Glide performed flawlessly with the new lithium-ion battery. The bike fired up without hesitation, and I had no reason to suspect any issues. However, on the third day, I began to notice that the bike was starting a bit slower than usual—a small concern that I decided to keep an eye on. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE On the fourth morning, the bike started up just fine at the hotel. After a quick stop at Starbucks, though, it refused to start. The battery was completely dead. Thankfully, I had one of our compact jump starter packs from the Law Abiding Biker Store, which saved the day. Without it, I would have been stuck waiting for a tow service—something every biker should try to avoid. A jump start pack is an essential tool that every rider should carry to prevent costly and time-consuming interruptions. The Ride Continues: Persistent Issues With my Street Glide jump-started, we set out for a long day of riding. Although the bike started after each stop, it did so a bit slower than usual. Additionally, the battery indicator on the digital dash remained on, signaling that something was still wrong. Despite these issues, we pressed on. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The Breakdown: A Dangerous Situation Later that day, just outside of Greensboro, NC, on a busy multi-lane freeway, my Street Glide suddenly went completely dead—without warning. I lost all power, including the digital dash system, and had to drift to the inside shoulder. Attempting to jump-start the bike again proved futile, as it wouldn't even power on. Left behind by my riding group, I quickly contacted them to secure a replacement battery. They managed to find a lead-acid battery and brought it back to my location. Fortunately, I was prepared with my Cruz Tools RTH3 emergency roadside tool kit, also available at the Law Abiding Biker Store. We swapped out the lithium-ion battery for the lead-acid one, and my bike started right up. This preparedness saved us valuable time and allowed us to continue our journey without further delay. The Aftermath: Investigating the Issue With the new lead-acid battery installed, the battery trouble indicator disappeared, and I had no further issues for the remainder of the trip. However, the situation left me with many questions. Was the problem caused by the lithium-ion battery? Has something changed in the 2024 models regarding the use of these batteries? And if so, why isn't this information widely known? Determined to find answers, I reached out to my connections within Harley-Davidson. After two weeks of communication, I received the following statement: Harley-Davidson's Statement:  Lithium batteries are not approved by HD fitment for Revolution Max and center-cooled models due to the unique features of the electrical system and software on those vehicles. We continue to evaluate those systems' interactions, the changes needed to possibly enable fitment, and consumer demand. Any potential future changes to enable lithium batteries will be communicated to the field and dealer network via fitment updates or service bulletins. Tired of a sore and achy ass? Then fix it with a high-quality Butt Buffer seat cushion? My Opinion: What Likely Happened Based on my experience with lithium-ion batteries, here's my take on what likely happened. Lithium-ion batteries are “smart” and can go into sleep mode if they are drawn down too far. I believe that's what happened when my Street Glide suddenly went dead on the freeway. The battery likely went into safe mode, cutting off power to the entire bike. While the charging system is fully capable of charging the battery, the new electrical system in the 2024 models—especially with the IFCU digital dash—might have different protections in place. These protections could allow the main battery to draw down further before it begins recharging, which might explain why a lead-acid battery, which isn't “smart” and doesn't go to sleep, worked without issue. Again, this is just my opinion based on what I've observed. Conclusion: Be Prepared and Stay Informed My experience underscores the importance of being prepared and staying informed about your motorcycle's components, especially when dealing with new technology. Whether it's carrying a reliable jump pack or a comprehensive roadside tool kit, being prepared can save you from potentially time consuming and costly situations. As Harley-Davidson continues to evaluate the use of lithium-ion batteries in their newer models, it's crucial for riders to stay updated wich is why I made this video and wrote this article.  New Patrons: Ola Mattisgården of Rydsgård, Sweden Jeffrey Porras of Phoenix, AZ Stephen Gates of Fort Collins, Colorado If you appreciate the content we put out and want to make sure it keeps on coming your way then become a Patron too! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this podcast episode, we talk about the new 2025 Indian Scout lineup.  It has been revamped for 2025.  For some background information, the Indian Scout is a motorcycle built by the Indian Motorcycle Company from 1920 to 1949. It rivaled the Chief as Indian's most important model. The 101 Scout, made from 1928 to 1931, has been called the best motorcycle Indian ever made.  A second line of Scouts, with heavier frames, was introduced in 1932 alongside the Standard Scout, which replaced the 101 Scout and shared its frame with the Chief and the Four. The small-displacement Scout and the Sport Scout, introduced in 1934, were continued until the end of civilian production in 1942. We and other Allied forces used military versions of both models during World War II. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The 2025 Indian Scout is built around an all-new 1250cc SpeedPlus engine, which gets its name from the PowerPlus engine and what's shared between the two units. The new engine produces a claimed 105 horsepower and 82 lb-ft of torque, except on 101 models, where an extra six horsepower is available through different tuning. The torque curve is long and flat, starting around 3000 rpm and continuing past peak horsepower at 7250, tapering off as it reaches the rev limiter at 8500 rpm. Over previous models, average fuel mileage is improved for an additional claimed 20 miles per tank, largely thanks to a one-tooth larger drive sprocket. The new SpeedPlus 1250 builds on Scout's unmatched reputation of delivering the perfect balance of power and control. With 105 HP on the Scout Classic, Scout Bobber, Sport Scout, and Super models, and 111 HP and 82 ft-lbs of torque on the 101 Scout.  The flat torque curve coupled with new available ride modes delivers smooth predictable acceleration in all conditions and maximizes the fun for riders of all levels.  Ride Modes include Standard, Rain, and Sport. 2025 Indian Scout Models: Scout Bobber Scout Classic Sport Scout Super Scout 101 Scout Store Items Mentioned: Denali Destroyer Headlights Softbrake Extended Rear Brake Pedals NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Harley Tail Light Transformation: Ciro Armor LED Programmable Light-Review & Install! LAB-359-You're Still Riding Your Motorcycle In A T-Shirt? This Riding Jacket Will Keep You Cooler!

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2024 68:45

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we discuss warm-weather protective motorcycle gear.   Recently, we embarked on a 10-day motorcycle road trip around the East Coast, covering over 3,000 miles. For the entire journey, I exclusively wore the Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket, and it didn't take long for me to fall in love with this affordable, progressive piece of riding gear. After thoroughly testing it in various conditions and temperatures, I decided to bring it right into the Law Abiding Biker Store. The Myth of Riding in a T-Shirt When the weather gets hot, it's common to see riders hitting the road in nothing but T-shirts, mistakenly believing it keeps them cool. This couldn't be further from the truth. Unfortunately, this misconception leaves many riders tired, dehydrated, sunburned, and most concerning, completely unprotected in case of an accident. As a full-time Police Motorcycle Officer and Investigator with 28 years of experience, I've responded to numerous motorcycle collisions, including fatalities. The sight of a long skin trail on the pavement is a grim reminder of the dangers of riding without proper gear. If you witness this once, you'll never consider riding in a T-shirt again. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The Evolution of Protective Riding Gear Gone are the days when leather was the only option for motorcycle protection. Today, there's no excuse to ride unprotected, thanks to advancements in protective gear. Modern riding jackets not only offer superior protection but also excel in regulating body temperature and airflow. The Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket is a prime example, combining high quality with an entry-level price, making it accessible for all riders. The Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket: A Game Changer Optimal Cooling and Comfort One of the standout features of the Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket is its exceptional internal climate control. With extensive mesh paneling on the torso, arms, and upper chest, the jacket ensures optimal airflow, keeping you cool even in hot weather. Unlike a T-shirt, which absorbs heat and causes you to lose moisture rapidly, this jacket helps you retain moisture, keeping you hydrated and comfortable. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Durability and Protection Constructed from lightweight 600D poly-fabric, the T SP X Superair Jacket offers excellent abrasion resistance, providing reliable protection in the event of a fall. The jacket is equipped with Nucleon Flex Plus elbow and shoulder armor, known for its flexibility and breathability. Despite its protective features, the armor has a thin profile that enhances comfort and allows for freedom of movement. An Alpinestars Nucleon Plasma Back Protector Insert can be added. The jacket is available in different colors.  Versatility Across Seasons During my trip, I experienced temperatures ranging from 60°F to over 100°F, and the jacket performed exceptionally well in all conditions. For cooler temperatures, pairing the Superair Jacket with the Alpinestars Purpose Mid-Layer Jacket extends its usability to three seasons. Below 60°F, the base layer adds warmth. The Importance of a Proper Base Layer From my experience in various riding disciplines—street, adventure, and dirt—wearing a proper base layer in hot weather is crucial. It provides support and helps regulate your temperature and perspiration. The Alpinestars Ride Tech v2 Summer Long Sleeve Underwear Top & Bottoms is, by far, the best hot weather base layer I've ever used. It instantly cools you down once you're on the move, significantly enhancing your comfort. NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: How To Install Progressive Front Suspension On A Harley Davidson With Batwing or Sharknose Fairing-DIY Video Conclusion: Embrace Protection and Comfort With the Alpinestars T SP X Superair Jacket, there's no longer any reason to ride unprotected. It's time to leave the T-shirt riding era behind and invest in gear that not only protects but also enhances your riding experience. This affordable jacket is a game changer for hot weather riding, offering the perfect blend of comfort, protection, and style. Don't compromise your safety—gear up and ride with confidence. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Hey Bikaholics, I just wanted to quickly tell you about some changes for our current and future Patron members of Law Abiding Biker Media. We wanted to let you all know about a change we are making that will help us deliver a better membership experience going forward. We are switching from “per piece of content” to “monthly” subscription billing on Patreon effective October 2024. This means that every month you will have a consistent price for all of the benefits that we provide, and it won't fluctuate based on the number of content pieces per month that we release. Don't stress out. There isn't really anything you need to do as a current member, but we wanted to keep you informed and be transparent. We decided to make this change both for the consistency it provides to members and us, and the flexibility to consider other benefits we can provide that aren't tied to the number of paid posts we make. Your membership will be converted from a “per creation” amount to an easier “monthly” subscription amount.  Understand, that we've never raised fees in over 10 years for our Patron members. During this transition, we are slightly raising membership fees for the first time for all new memberships as operation costs have increased over time. HERE ARE THE CHANGES TO MEMBERSHIP FEES: Base Tier- From $1 to $5 per month Mid Tier- From $12 to $15 per month Top Tier - From $20 to $25 per month The only change existing members will see during this transition is that they'll only be charged once a month now instead of per piece of content that we release. Understand that if you choose to sign up exclusively within the IOS app on your iPhone, you'll pay additional fees to Apple for using their sign-up services. LAB-372-Motorcycle Tire Talk! Age, Balancing, Styles, Etc.

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, we talk about all things tires.  We cover how old your motorcycle tires can be and still be safe, what tires are the best, and the best way to balance them.  This episode was presented live on YouTube to our Patreon members.  You can be a Patron of Law Abiding Biker and get our content much sooner than the public.  If you need new tires, please check out our store.  You can contact us if you don't see your desired tire size.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Tires age due to a combination of factors, including exposure to environmental conditions, the materials they are made from, and how they are used. Here are some key points on how tires age: Oxidation: Over time, exposure to oxygen and ozone in the air causes the rubber compounds in tires to degrade. This process, known as oxidation, makes the rubber harder and less flexible, leading to cracks and a decrease in performance. UV Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight can break down the chemical bonds in tire rubber, causing the tires to become brittle and crack. This is especially problematic for tires that are not regularly used and are stored outside. Heat: Exposure to high temperatures accelerates the aging process of tires. Heat causes the rubber to lose elasticity and strength more quickly. Tires used in hot climates or on vehicles that generate a lot of heat (e.g., heavy trucks) age faster. Physical Wear: Regular use leads to physical wear and tear, which contributes to the aging process. The tread wears down, and the internal structure can become compromised due to impacts, punctures, and general use. Storage Conditions: How tires are stored significantly affects their aging. Tires stored in cool, dry, and dark conditions age more slowly compared to those exposed to heat, moisture, and light. Chemical Exposure: Exposure to certain chemicals, oils, and solvents can accelerate the aging process of tires by breaking down the rubber compounds. Maintenance: Proper tire maintenance, including regular inflation, alignment, and rotation, can help slow the aging process. Neglecting these aspects can lead to uneven wear and faster deterioration. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Signs of Aging Tires Cracking: Visible cracks on the sidewalls or between the treads are a common sign of aging. Hardening: The rubber becomes harder and less flexible, reducing the tire's grip on the road. Deformation: Bulges or deformities in the tire structure can indicate internal damage and aging. Tread Wear: Worn-down treads reduce traction and can be a sign of an aged tire. Recommendations Regular Inspections: Have your tires inspected regularly by a professional, especially if they are over five years old. Replacement: Tires should generally be replaced every six to ten years, regardless of their appearance, to ensure safety and performance. Proper Storage: If storing tires for an extended period, keep them in a cool, dry, and dark place to slow the aging process. Understanding how tires age can help you maintain them better and ensure your safety on the road. NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Your Stock Harley Shift Linkage Will Fail At Some Point-Fix It! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch, and we give you proper motorcycle clutch break-in procedures to ensure a good working and long-lasting clutch.  Most riders buy their new bike and just ride and don't truly break it in.  I recommend breaking your clutch in correctly to widen your clutch friction zone and ensure durability.   For those unfamiliar with the term, the friction zone is the critical area where the clutch plates are neither fully engaged nor disengaged. Some riders might call it “dragging the clutch.” Mastering control within this zone is crucial for maneuvering your motorcycle, particularly at lower speeds. Experienced riders, like police officers, frequently operate within this zone to navigate challenging courses, which directly translates to safer street riding. Check out my motorcycle clutch break-in video HERE. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Given the shift to cable clutches by Harley, we can still optimize the setup. Harley incorporates a plastic adjuster along the cable line, essentially an automatic adjuster. However, this system lacks the flexibility for riders to fine-tune play or engagement preferences. Fortunately, I've discovered a solution in the form of the Fat Baggers EZ Clutch Adjustor Upgrade. This aftermarket product replaces the stock plastic adjuster with a more durable metal counterpart, enabling precise external adjustments for clutch lever positioning. We carry these clutch adjusters right in the Law Abiding Biker Store. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Recently, I launched an in-depth tutorial video focusing on  the Harley Infotainment Control Unit "IFCU" Digital Dash system. This cutting-edge technology is now a standard feature on select 2024 models and will continue to be integrated into future touring models. Throughout the creation process of this tutorial, I dedicated extensive time both in the workshop and on the road, immersing myself in every aspect of the IFCU. Despite the absence of accompanying instructions or information, I meticulously explored its functionalities, uncovering both its advantages and limitations. For bikers eager to master the IFCU and harness its full potential, I've crafted a comprehensive tutorial video. You can access it conveniently at LawAbidingBiker.com/IFCU or LawAbidingBiker.com/HarleyDigitalDash.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The clarity and size of the screen, coupled with features like the high contrast mode for sunny conditions, further enhance usability. In my opinion, it stands as the most responsive auto manufacturer digital dash system I've encountered thus far, though not without its minor flaws, which I'll address shortly. Before delving into those nuances, it's crucial to note the subscription fee required for embedded navigation: $349 for 3 years, inclusive of live weather, traffic, and map updates. While some may balk at this additional cost, it's essential to contextualize it against the previous Boom Box, where map updates incurred fees ranging from $150 to $200 each time, without the added benefits of live weather and traffic. Whether the subscription model proves more favorable remains a matter for debate. And for those considering whether to opt for embedded navigation, be aware that without it, you'll encounter a QR code prompting you to purchase it each time you access navigation on the IFCU. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The most pressing question on many minds, one that I'm unable to fully address at this juncture, is how the IFCU will fare in the long run—say, 5 or even 10 years down the road. After all, my previous Harley Street Glide Special served me faithfully for a decade before I upgraded to my 2024 model. Concerns naturally arise regarding the long-term support Harley will provide for the Harley infotainment control unit. Will the system gradually slow down and experience lag over time? And if so, how will such issues be addressed by customer support? Additionally, the longevity of support from the third-party company responsible for developing the Skyline OS operating system is another pertinent consideration. Items mentioned in the podcast: Fat Baggers EZ Clutch Adjuster Kuryakyn Extended Brake Pedal Ultimately, only time will provide the answers we seek. You may see excessive oil splattered along the right side of your bike while riding hard or long distances. Your air filter may become saturated with engine oil. You may feel your bike has slightly less powerful as it would on a normal hot day. But eventually, the oil in the crankcase builds to the point that the crank is sloshing through the oil as it gets deeper in the crankcase. Eventually, the crankcase fills leaving massive rotational resistance. Efforts to accelerate are met with no response. The engine simply can't rapidly change rotational speed because of the resistance. Engine failure comes from there being so much oil build up in the crankcase, that the pan is starved leaving no oil to be pumped to the top end. The engine also overheats just from all the resistance of too much oil in the crankcase. The engine begins to overheat and components such as bearings, lifters, and worse, begin to fail. The rider will never see an oil light which is quite disturbing and a significant design flaw. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Consequences: Oil sumping will result in excessive friction and power loss to your Harley M8 engine.  Excess crankcase oil is whipped into a froth of air and oil by the flywheel. This condition is called oil aeration. Aerated oil makes scavenging much more difficult and can hinder the return of oil from the rocker box area. The combination of these conditions often results in oil being forced out the head breathers, air cleaner contamination, oil leaks, loss of oil supply, lifter clatter, premature component wear, and potential engine failure. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Well, I did it.  After 10 years I finally upgraded from my 2014 Amber Whiskey Street Glide Special to a 2024 Harley Davidson Street Glide in Whiskey Fire with chrome finishes.  I'm starting to think I have a thing for whiskey.  Anyway, we made a business decision to replace my 2014 with a 2024.  There have been enough changes that we can dig into the 2024 and provide you, the audience, with valuable information.  One such piece of info is our brand new tutorial on the Harley-Davidson Skyline Operating System.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE So if you listen to the podcast you heard me say that I would buy a new Street Glide if the 2024 models have come out with Variable Valve Timing (VVT).  What I learned from Harley engineers is that the VVT motor is extremely smooth and designed to tour.  The downside is it gets tricky to install cams and other motor upgrades.  I may never install a cam, but I want the ability to do so if I choose.  The non-VVT motor is a great base for those of us who want to upgrade our motors in our garages.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! It's been a while since I purchased a new bike at a dealership and I learned a few things to share with you.  I was offered something called Theft Protection.  One of the dealerships I was working with automatically added this to my purchase.  It is a clear dab of paint they place on different parts of your bike.  The clear paint contains micro dots with numbers and the paint glows under black light.  As a law enforcement officer (LEO) I can tell you that most LEOs have no idea of this and I can't tell you if this info is in an accessible database.   Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we talk about the recently released 2024 Harley-Davidson Touring Models.  Specifically the 2024 Road Glide, the 2024 Street Glide, and the 2024 CVO Road Glide ST.  I had the opportunity to ride these backs recently in Law Vegas at a Harley-Davidson media event. I learned quite a bit of information to pass along to you, the consumer.  In the episode, I get into motor size.  Variable Valve Timing (VVT) motors versus non-VVT motors, suspension, the new Skyline OS Operating System, performance parts, and more.  Hopefully, the info we provide will help you decide which bike is right for you.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The 2024 Road Glide and Street Glide only come in one model which we are referring to as the Standard model.  For the last several years you could purchase a standard model and a special model.  The standard model was more affordable but lacked many desirable items.  The special model cost more but had many upgraded items.  Now, the "standard" model comes with everything the special models of the past had.  The starting price point (chrome finishings) comes in at a price in between what the standard and special model cost.  One thing to note is black finishings and certain colors cost more.  The new "standard" model is a good starting platform to build from.  You can go the performance bagger or the long haul touring route with them.   The 2024 CVO Road Glide ST is an all-new model.  It is inspired by the King of the Baggers race series.  I've been predicting a bike like this for some time.  My prediction was wilder including mid controls for more lean angle allowing an amature racer to take it out on the track out of the box.  The CVO Road Glide ST has many race-inspired upgrades including carbon fiber parts, an M8 121 motor with upgrades, performance SHOWA suspension, radial Brembo brakes, special track modes, and more.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! So, you may want to know if you should buy a standard Road or Street Glide, or should you buy a CVO Road Glide ST?  Here is what I will say; look back on your last two years of riding and evaluate the type of riding you do.  The CVO ST may be the bike for you if want to haul ass and carve up the canyons.  Alternatively, the "standard" models may be best if you want to tour.  Ultimately you'll be happy if you purchase either.  Now, get out there and ride already!  New Free Video Mentioned:  Finding That Elusive Place We Seek! CVO™ 25th Anniversary graphics celebrate a milestone in factory customization. The Milwaukee-Eight® 121 High Output V-Twin engine is exclusive to the CVO Road Glide ST model, tuned to produce 127 horsepower (94kW) and 145 lb. ft. LAB-357-2024 Harley-Davidson Models Released and Predictions

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch, and we review the released 2024 Harley-Davidson Models.  We also give our predictions about what may or may not be released on January 24, 2024.  Harley is doing a virtual launch event on the 24th at 10 AM CST.  You can sign up for the event HERE.  We will put out a video and podcast following the virtual launch on the 24th.   Harley released some of the 2024 models via the website recently.  These are the bikes that are carryovers from 2023.  Our belief is they did this to keep dealers stocked with new bikes.  You see, in 2023 there were a couple of production shutdowns.  One was related to a defective brake line from a third-party provider and the other was due to a parts shortage.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Missing models (as of the date of this recording) from the 2024 lineup are the Fat Bob 114, all CVO models, all Street Glide models, all Road Glide models except the Limited, and the Pan America standard model.  So, one can infer there is going to be something new with the touring models and perhaps the Fat Bob 114. Ryan predicts the 107 Milwaukee 8 motor will be no more after this year.  He believes the 114" VVT motor will be in the special models along with the new dash and fairings.  He believes the standards will have the older Boom Box GTS unit and a smaller motor.  Ryan also believes that Harley will come out with a King of the Bagger model that is more track-ready than the ST models.  Lurch and Ryan predict that there will be a mid-sized Pan America.  Lastly, Ryan predicts that the long-awaited Bronx Street Fighter will come out sometime in 2024. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we talk about the 2024 Indian Motorcycles lineup.  The Indian Motorcycle company hosted a media event in Southern California a couple of months ago.  Unfortunately, we didn't get an invite but we have learned a few things since then.  For the FTR, Scout, Springfield, and Chief the updates pretty much only consist of color and graphics.  With that said, India released two new colors; Sunset Red Metallic and Sunset Red Smoke.  A new model for 2024 is the FTR X 100% R CARBON.  This was a collaboration with 100%, known mostly for riding goggles.  This is a limited edition creation with only 400 units released worldwide.  This new FTR sports Ohlins suspension, blue carbon fiber body parts, and Akrapovic exhaust. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE An Indian Motorcycle representative had this to say about the Scout lineup at the media event: "It's [2023] been an interesting year.  It's a turbulent industry right now.  You've probably seen earning reports from our brand and some of the other competitors in the space.  We're navigating that really well. What's been cool to see for Indian specifically is our market share performance.  A couple of weeks ago we had market share leadership in the mid-size category.  That is our Scout lineup, for the first time and that is really cool to see.  Leading with the Scout lineup, but we're going to focus on other lineups here today, but that continues to be a great performer for our brand.  And that's bringing people into the Indian Motorcycle family and over time they're graduating into our other vehicles.  So playing the long game there is working out nicely for us and it's good to see the response." Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we talk about being impartial when reviewing motorcycles; in particular Harley-Davidson motorcycles.  This topic was spurred by a voicemail message left by long-time listener Steve Kastell.  Steve expressed concern about the impartiality of my Harley-Davidson motorcycle reviews.  His concern stemmed from the fact that the majority of the motorcycle ride and review events I attend are hosted by Harley-Davidson.  The topic then flows into the announcement that our YouTube Channel just went past 200,000 subscribers.  I talk about the journey to get to 200k subscribers; the good and the bad.  You can leave us a voicemail HERE if you have comments or questions that might turn into a show topic.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE We've been at the YouTube Channel and Podcast game for over 11 years now.  For the first eight of those years, we reviewed bikes that we could get our hands on.  Many of those bikes belonged to friends and family.  We were able to occasionally wrangle on out of our local Harley-Davidson dealer.  Unfortunately, we generally only got to take those bikes out for a few hours.   Here at Law Abiding Biker, we worked hard to get the attention of Harley and most recently Indian Motorcycles.  Hopefully, as we continue to grow our reach we'll get access to new brands.  We do our best to be honest and impartial when reviewing bikes.  I don't just gush over the new bike like some other YouTube Channels.  We will pick out things that can be improved on even if they are "knit-picky".  The truth is, I've been hard on Harley in the past and still point out when they can do better.  We appreciate Steve leaving the voicemail and expressing his concern.  Heck, it provided good content for the podcast.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! LAB-354-Motorcycle Rider Safety Clothing, Equipment, Paint, Lighting-EVERYTHING

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2023 77:26

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, we talk about motorcycle safety, more specifically being seen.  A common complaint of street riders is that other motorists fail to observe them. Motorists who violate motorcyclists' right-of-way frequently state, “I didn't see him,” or “He came out of nowhere”.  We talk about rider clothing, equipment, lighting, paint, and more.   Apparel A bright-colored helmet will catch the motorist's attention and enhance motorcycle safety.  Over 70 percent of helmets sold are black.  Most collisions occur in broad daylight. Wear brightly-colored or reflective clothing to increase your chances of being seen.  Bright orange, red, yellow, or green jackets or vests are the best for being seen. Brightly colored helmets can also help others see you.  Reflective material on a vest and the sides of the helmet will help drivers see you from the side. Reflective material can also be a big help for drivers coming toward you or from behind. Remember, your body is half of the visible surface area of the rider/motorcycle unit. Motorcycle Color Your best bet might be to go with a white motorcycle, which is bright, reflects light, and stands out from other colors. While white might not be the first choice for riders, it can appear as a classy option. For instance, a white Harley-Davidson shows off your power and style when you're cruising around town. During the hot summer months, it will reflect light and absorb less heat than a darker motorcycle. However, you'll have to be careful if you're riding a bright white bike against snow. If you're going to be frequently riding in this type of weather condition, ride a bike with a contrasting color.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Other colors to consider are orange and yellow, which can draw more attention to your bike.  In daylight, green is the most visible color from a distance for human eyes. In the darkness, however, yellow is the easiest color to recognize. The rods (small structures in the eye) are responsible for sight in low-light situations. And the cones are responsible for high-light conditions. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Lighting The best way to help others see your motorcycle is to always keep the headlight and, if equipped, running lights on. A motorcycle with its light on is twice as likely to be noticed. Using your high beam during the day and at night increases the chances that oncoming drivers will see you. Use your high beam when it is legal and safe to do so. When it is foggy, use the low beam.  Headlight and brake light modulators create a unique light pattern that grabs attention.  Additional lighting that shows the dimensions of your motorcycle can help you be seen.   NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Biker Review of the Icon Patrol 3 Boots-Progressive Motorcycle Riding Shoes And remember Loud Pipes Save Lives!  Ride Safe & Ride Often! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, we discuss the Quad Lock motorcycle cell phone holder.  We bought one to see what they are all about.  It's been flooding our social media advertising and we're sure it's been flooding yours.  What is it all about and how does it stack up against the Biker Gripper? We here at Law Abiding Biker Media are always open to examining and reviewing rivals to the Biker Gripper cell phone motorcycle mount system. To date, we have not found any other mount system that comes close to the strength, looks, build, quality, and functionality of the Biker Gripper.  So, after Quad Lock was spending loads of advertising dollars to push their motorcycle cell phone mount in front of us in our social media feeds, we bought one to handle and test it. Does the Quad Lock stack up to the world's best motorcycle cell phone mount, the Biker Gripper?  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE We did some research and found that the Quad Lock was actually a Kickstarter campaign back in 2011 backed by a couple of bicyclists out of Australia. The Quad Lock was originally designed for a bicycle environment, not a motorcycle environment. It was sold to bicyclists and at some point, the company wanted to expand its market and decided to try to market it to motorcyclists. However, Quad Locks' motorcycle mount system has had serious vibration issues over the years, damaging smartphone cameras internally. And so, they've had to try to appease the angry motorcyclists with adaptations, by making a separate part called a vibration dampener that you can purchase for an additional $20. Now, it seems clear that Quad Lock knew there was a problem with vibrations in their mount system for motorcycles. However, instead of including that part for motorcycle kits, they'll charge you for it. Unless of course, you want to damage your smartphone camera internally. It's also worth noting that all Quad Lock products are made in Chinese Factories.  To be fair, the Quad Lock system and cases seem to be of good quality. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! In contrast, the Biker Gripper motorcycle cell phone mount is produced and sold by a company of actual motorcyclists (bikers) and it was designed from the ground up for a motorcycle environment. That's why it has no vibration issues and does not damage smartphone cameras internally. The reason the Biker Gripper does not have vibration issues is that the gripper arms on the head move independently to absorb shaking and vibration. And, the rubber pad in the base with our logo on it actually provides grip and isolation from high-frequency vibration. Our logo, however badass it is, is a functional component of the gripper head.  Also, the ball head system on the Biker Gripper has some give, unlike the rigid mounting system of the Quad Lock. Again, the Biker Gripper was made for motorcycles from the ground up. And, to our knowledge, the Biker Gripper is the only motorcycle mount system manufactured in the USA and not in China.  After spending time with the Quad Lock, I can tell you that it's a finicky system, but you do get a bit smoother with it after practicing. You see, it's a four-tab lock system on the mount and you have to blindly align those four tabs up with the tab cutouts on the case. Once you do that, you then turn it a 1/4 turn to lock the tabs in. Trust me when I say, you'll definitely miss the tab alignment at times, which is a bit frustrating.  NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: What's The BEST MOTORCYCLE CELL PHONE MOUNT? Quad Lock Vs. Biker Gripper-THE WINNER IS? USA Made! In contrast, the Biker Gripper cell phone motorcycle mount has no intricate locking system and is not finicky at all. Yup, easily pull one side or the other on the Biker Gripper head, push your smartphone in, and let the arm go. It comes out just as easy and in literally one second. It's so easy, you can even do it with bulky riding gloves on! It was designed for motorcyclists and that environment.  Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch, and we discuss the fact that Harley-Davidson sales dropped by 16% in the 3rd quarter of 2023.  We give you the numbers and break them down.  We provide you with Harley-Davidson's response to the numbers.  We also give our thoughts on the topic.  2023 has been so far so good for Harley-Davidson fanatics. The year started with the reveal of a few new big cruisers, followed by H-D's new breed of sub-500cc offerings in Asia. Then came the headline-making 2023 CVO duo, which started a new chapter of modernity for the company. However, the story seems different behind the scenes, i.e. in terms of the MoCo's financials. As a reminder, Harley-Davidson's reporting format segments the company into three parts: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (all motorcycles except LiveWire), Harley-Davidson Financial Services, and LiveWire. This structure has been the way the Motor Company has handled its financial reporting since it transformed LiveWire into its own company in 2022. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Harley-Davidson reported that retail sales of all its motorcycles (excluding LiveWire) declined in all geographic regions in the third quarter of 2023. Overall, worldwide sales were down 16% on the previous year.  In North America, the Motor Company saw a 15% drop in sales in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (which count as one region, called EMEA for short), sales fell by 13%. For Asia-Pacific, sales fell by 24%. Finally, in Latin America, sales fell by 11% in the third quarter of 2023. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! So what is Harley-Davidson saying?  "Against a challenging macro and consumer backdrop, we have been able to achieve a result that preserves profitability at an industry-leading level. In addition, we successfully launched our pinnacle CVO motorcycles, with CVO retail sales up 25%," said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson. "Harley-Davidson remains committed to its Hardwire strategy with a focus on both desirability and profitability, and we will do everything possible to achieve our goals while being realistic that current market conditions are complex. We are gearing up for '24 and will ensure that we are fully aligned and ready as we close out the year with Q4." NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Harley Can't Void Your Warranty Anymore For This! EFI Tuners? LAB-350-Apps We've Tested And Used For Motorcycle Trips | What You Need To Know

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we talk about the motorcycle apps we have tested and used.  We also talk about some that we no longer use.  Mapping, weather, location sharing, and other motorcycle apps can make your trip much more seamless.  Over the years we've narrowed our list of apps down to what we think are the best.   Motorcycle apps can be highly beneficial to riders in several ways. Here are some of the key advantages: Navigation and GPS: Many motorcycle-specific apps offer specialized navigation features designed for riders. They can provide routes that take into account factors like winding roads, and scenic routes, and avoid highways. Some apps also offer offline maps, which can be crucial in areas with limited or no cellular coverage. Safety Features: Some apps include features aimed at enhancing rider safety. These can include real-time traffic updates, accident alerts, and road hazard notifications. Additionally, some apps have features that can track your ride and notify emergency contacts in case of an accident. Maintenance and Service: There are apps available that help riders keep track of their motorcycle's maintenance schedule. They can send reminders for services like oil changes, tire replacements, and other regular maintenance tasks. Community and Social Interaction: Many motorcycle apps have social features that allow riders to connect with others in the motorcycle community. This can include forums, group rides, event listings, and the ability to share routes or experiences. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Weather Updates: Some motorcycle apps provide real-time weather updates, which can be crucial for planning rides and avoiding inclement weather. Fuel and Expense Tracking: Apps can help riders keep track of fuel expenses and mileage. This can be useful for budgeting and for planning longer trips. Route Planning and Sharing: Many apps allow riders to plan routes in advance, often with features that let you customize the type of roads you prefer. You can also share your routes with other riders or save them for future reference. Gear and Accessories Shopping: Some apps have integrated online stores where riders can shop for motorcycle gear, accessories, and parts. This can be convenient for finding and purchasing the equipment you need. Rider Statistics and Analytics: Certain apps can track and analyze your riding habits, providing insights on factors like speed, distance, and even lean angles on turns. This information can be valuable for improving your riding skills. Insurance and Documentation: Some apps allow you to store important documents like your motorcycle registration, insurance, and license digitally. This can be a handy backup in case you forget or lose your physical copies. Event and Ride Planning: Many motorcycle apps have features that allow users to find and join group rides, as well as discover motorcycle-related events and meetups happening in their area. Overall, motorcycle apps can enhance the riding experience by providing tools and resources that cater specifically to the needs and interests of motorcyclists. They can help riders plan and execute safer, more enjoyable journeys. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! LAB-349-Importance of Motorcycle Lighting | New Ciro Products

In this episode, we discuss the importance of motorcycle lighting and being seen.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists who are conspicuous are under-represented in crashes. A common complaint of street riders is that other motorists fail to observe them. Motorists who violate motorcyclists' right-of-way frequently state, “I didn't see him,” or “He came out of nowhere”.  A variety of recognized tactics exists to make motorcycles and their riders more conspicuous: lighting, surface color and size, and rider traffic strategy.  Using the high beam of a motorcycle's headlight during the day also helps to prevent violations of the motorcyclist's right-of-way, SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Headlight modulators, which cause the light to alternate between a higher and a lower intensity during the day, also increase conspicuity.  Many modern street bikes are equipped with position running lamps in their front and/or rear turn signals. This may help other motorists to identify the vehicle as a motorcycle and to better judge its distance and speed.  Few motorcycles have more than single-point rear lighting, though multiple lights at the rear would seem to offer similar benefits and also provide redundancy for the single taillight.
