You're listening to Burnt Toast! I'm Virginia Sole-Smith. Today, my conversation is with Debra Benfield, RDN.Deb is a registered dietitian/nutritionist with 40 years of experience helping people heal their relationship with food, movement and their bodies. Her work sits at the intersection of anti-ageism, body liberation and trauma-informed care, offering a radically compassionate alternative to diet and wellness culture—especially for those in midlife and beyond. After turning 60, Deb began questioning the dominant narratives around aging, vitality and beauty, and quickly realized the majority of resources still centered weight loss and youthful appearance as the ultimate goals. In response, she created what she couldn't find: A framework for nourishing the body that honors body respect, prioritizes liberation and embraces the full spectrum of aging. Deb is the author of the beautiful new book Unapologetic Aging: How to Mend and Nourish Your Relationship with Your Body. Deb came on the podcast back in 2023 and we had what was really the first, or certainly one of the first, conversations we've had on Burnt Toast about the intersection of ageism and anti-fat bias. That discussion helped lay the foundation for how we're continuing to talk about those issues. Deb is someone I always turn to for resources and wisdom as we're navigating those conversations here. I am so thrilled to have Deb back on the podcast today, to talk about her new book, how diet culture has hijacked the menopause discourse, and why peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are actually giving you all the protein you need. Unapologetic Aging comes out on December 16, so now is the perfect time to pre-order it as a holiday gift for yourself, your mom, or anyone you know in midlife and beyond! And don't forget that if you've bought Fat Talk from Split Rock Books, you can take 10% off your purchase of Unapologetic Aging there too — just use the code FATTALK at checkout. And if you value this conversation, a paid subscription is the best way to support our work!Join Burnt Toast!
Send us a textWe close out our “Power of Music” theme with Robert Altman's 1980 musical extravaganza Popeye, starring Robin Williams as the titular sailor man who arrives in the town of Sweethaven searching for his long lost pappy. Karl had the added shakeup that his pick had to take place in a single location, and the aforementioned town of Sweethaven suits that perfectly. Joining Popeye on his adventure is Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl and the large and mean Bluto, played by Paul Smith. We also discuss the history of Popeye, how effectively we feel comic strips translate to live action, and why Karl won't shut up about the greatness of Harry Nilsson. And of course spinach…we talk about spinach.

Ok, let us begin with a visit to the Spirit Halloween store to see what’s freshly alive for 2025! SPIRIT STORE 2025 We visited the Spirit Store in Nashville’s Opry Mills where the legendary theme park Opryland used to stand… but that’s a story for another time. We wanted to see what was new for Halloween 2025 and we were not disappointed. As we entered, we noticed the centerpiece for this year was haunted subway system. Very original. Of course it was monster rat infested which was quite a shock to the conductor. Once we escaped the train we took in a little animatronic target practice on a decapitated clown. Mama’s not gonna like this! Scary clowns seem to be a thing this year. Moving on from the animatronics, we find an assortment of un-welcome mats for the front door including the Bates Motel complete with bloody footprints, Mars Attacks, with Killer Klowns and Pennywise keeping the clown theme alive. M3gan seems to still be holding her own with the young ladies (you know it’s the dance)! And for the little ones we have the cutesy line of dolls known as Tiny Terrors with adorable baby versions of Chucky, Frankenstein’s little monster and Little Mikey Meyers. Moving on to more costumes we find many food items like pizza and ramen which is about all you’ll be able to afford after blowing your paycheck in this place, hard tea and you can also make yourself a few fries short of a happy meal dress as a pack of french fries. For the couples you can be chips and salsa, plug and socket, peanut butter and jelly or milk and cookie Awww! There’s also a great assortment of inflatable costumes like the inflatable banana, penguin, alien abduction, blow up chicken, big rubber chicken so you can throw yourself at Svengoolie, chicken abduction and giant balloon animal! Also I didn’t realize that Spongebob was still so popular but there’s an entire wall with every sort of Spongebob Squarepants character you can imagine and you can even buy your own supersized spatula perfect for flipping your crabby pattys and also for scraping your carcass out the door and back into the mall once your cash has all run dry in the Spirit Store 2025! Ya know, every year I always wonder just how the Spirit Store is going to top itself from the previous year and they always do. The animatronics get better, the products overall get better and there's always something new like for example, I don't recall seeing the Terror Tots before this year and I just thought making those iconic movie monsters into cute dolls was just a really neat idea. And speaking of movie monsters, I think it's time we have a look over… THE MOST NOTABLE SCARY MOVIES OF 2025! Ok, now why am I calling this the most NOTABLE scary movies of 2025 instead of my favorites? Quite honestly it's because, while I have seen my fair share of them, I haven't seen them all. There's just too many and when it comes to certain types of scary movies like vampires, zombies and themes that have really been beaten into the ground, it's tough to motivate me to go see a show about a type of monster I have already seen a thousand times before. Therefore I'm going to do a rundown of the notable ones that stand out to me whether I've seen them or not and also give you my thoughts on the ones I have seen, then at the end I'll let you know which upcoming scary movies I'm looking forward to in 2026! Sound good? Alright, let's get started! SINNERS: I have not seen this one but it tops Rotten Tomatoes as the number one scary movie of 2025 and stars Michael B Jordan. It's set in 1932 and revolves around a pair of criminal brothers who return to their hometown and find themselves confronted by a supernatural evil which turns out to be vampires. I'm sorry but I'm sick of vampire movies. I'm sick of zombie movies. I like the fact that it's set in 1932 and has a great lead actor but come on, let's do something more original here. COMPANION: Ok, I haven't seen this one either but after reading the synopsis, I'm intrigued and thinking I need to pull this one up at home and give it a watch! Companion is a science fiction thriller about a couple, Iris and Josh, who go on a weekend getaway with friends to a remote cabin. The trip spirals into chaos when Iris discovers she is a companion robot controlled by Josh, leading to a series of violent and shocking events as she fights for her autonomy! I like it! WEAPONS: I did see this one and I must say, it was pretty good! It's about an entire elementary school classroom that goes missing except for one child. It's an investigative part thriller , part horror movie involving witchcraft. The ending is fantastic and fantastically hilarious dark comedy. 28 YEARS LATER: I did not see this one mainly because it's a sequel of a sequel of a sequel and I'm just over it, not to mention it's just another zombie flick. The only reason I'm mentioning it here is because it has been a very successful franchise thus far so it is actually notable. I just have no interest in it at all. THE LONG WALK: This is one that has been recently in the theatres and has a somewhat original plot in that there's this group of people being forced to walk no slower than 3 miles per hour and whomever is the last one remaining is the only one who is allowed to live. Ok, it's original. It's just not interesting, at least not to me. I live near the historic trail of tears. You want to make a horror movie about people being walked to death? Make a movie about that because it actually happened! LONGLEGS: I saw this one which co-stars Nicolas Cage and revolves around an FBI investigation which turns up some very disturbing occult happenings. Nic Cage turned in an amazing performance as if one would expect anything less. By the way, if you're wondering why Nic Cage has been turning up in a million oddball B-Movies as of late, it's because he supposedly racked up a mountain of debts from living like… Nic Cage and he decided that instead of declaring bankruptcy that he would pull himself out of the red by taking on every oddball role he's offered until he gets his finances back in the black. I for one am hoping he never gets his finances back in order because I am thoroughly enjoying all these whacked out mini productions he keeps popping up in! A QUIET PLACE DAY ONE: I saw this one and thought it was fantastic! If you're familiar with the Quiet Place series of movies then you already know that Earth was invaded by blind aliens who hunt by sonar. SO if you want to live, you have to stay completely silent. There's a terminally ill woman with a kitty cat and all she wants is to get across town for a slice of her favorite pizza before her time runs out, when the alien invasion happens. Along the way, she happens to team up with a young businessman who decides in the midst of sheer hell on earth, that he's going to help this woman get her dying wish of achieving her favorite slice of pizza. I'd have to say, this was easily my favorite scary movie of 2025 even if it was the third installment of a sequel. Great original story line and fantastic acting. SMILE 2: I'll just say it, I didn't care for the original so I didn't bother with this one. NOSFERATU: This historically was the silent film that Dracula was derived from and has many, many similarities. The only big name actor here is Willem Dafoe and he is mainly relegated to a supporting role. I suppose it's neat in that they brought the original vampire movie to life for modern audiences, but my opinion is that they got the story polished and perfected with Dracula and while I can respect what they've done here, it's just not really needed. ABIGAIL: A little kid vampire who likes to toy with her victims. Once again, I'm sick of vampire movies so I didn't subject myself to this. ALIEN: ROMULUS: I saw this one. It was the same ol same ol. A bunch of people in space encounter the aliens. A bunch of them die and a couple of them make it out alive. ARCADIAN: Here's another one of those Nic Cage clawing out of debt movies! I saw it and it was decent. In a post-pandemic world a single father (Cage) and his two teenage sons try to survive in a a world where they have to hole up in their fortified farmhouse at night to protect themselves from bloodthirsty creatures who hate the light so they only hunt at night. It was ok. Just ok. BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE: Yep, I saw it. Was it as good as the original? Nope not hardly. Was it still good? Yes it was good and worth seeing. Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton were both amazing. Nothing really stood out about it however other than the fact that Michael Keaton can still deliver a character this physically demanding after all these years. RESPECT! METH GATOR: I know a guy who's in this movie and happened across it while channel surfing one day and said what the heck, let's watch it. It's largely a mindless B-Movie that's so bad it's good. I will say there is a part in the movie where my friend Wade Williams delivers a monologue which I thought was an incredible bit of acting. And about the only bit of acting in this movie at all. It's a fun, campy, bloody escape. If you liked Cocaine Bear, you'll like Meth Gator. I'm still waiting for Crack-o-dile! M3GAN 2.0: I really like the premise of M3GAN and I saw the first movie but didn't see this one. I have caught a few clips online however. My feeling is that they accomplished what they needed to in the first movie and bringing her back as the hero instead of the villain was a misstep and the clips I have seen have only bolstered that opinion. And then you have a smattering of movies which have taken classic characters who have aged out of their copyright protections and have been gloriously turned into Scary Sendups! Some examples would be PETER PAN'S NEVERLAND NIGHTMARE, SCREAMBOAT (which is a horror sendup of Steamboat Willie which is where Mickey Mouse made his debut to the world), and last but not least we have POPEYE THE SLAYER MAN which is one I had in my list of upcoming must-sees from last year! Well… I saw it. And while it is quite gory, I thought it was overall pretty decent. Popeye has holed himself up for decades in an abandoned warehouse by the docks living on tainted spinach which has made him homicidally crazy. Basically anyone who dares to enter the warehouse he lives in gets their head crushed by Popeye's bare hands. In a nice twist revealed towards the latter part of the movie, he and Olive Oyl's daughter tries to rescue Popeye from his addiction to glowing spinach but ultimately fails and Popeye continues on as a murderous maniac with hopefully many sequels to come. There were also two other Popeye horror releases this past year: POPEYE'S REVENGE which I attempted to watch on TV but it was so bad I turned it off about a quarter of the way in. And then there's SHIVER ME TIMBERS which I have only seen the trailer for and it appears to be the worst one of the three. And that mummy wraps up the scary movie rundown of 2025! But what am I looking forward to in 2026 you ask? THE BRIDE: (March 2026) THIS is the one to watch for! Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Jeannie Berlin, Julianne Hough, Peter Sarsgaard and more. It's an all-star modern interpretation of the Bride of Frankenstein and the trailer looks amazing! I absolutely cannot wait! EVIL DEAD BURN (July 2026), Ok, I'm a sucker for the Evil Dead movies even without Bruce Campbell, but of course they would be better with him it goes without saying. And that's our Dandy Spook Shack Scary Movie Rundown but we've got just one more item to get to before we close the coffin lid on this year's Halloween Special and that would be the very special treatment the Classic Monster Cereals have gotten this year from Jim Henson! That's right, they have muppetized Count Chocula, Frankenberry, Boo Berry, Yummy Mummy and Frute Brute. And the characters look amazing! They really did a fantastic job… BUT! I have a skeleton bone to pick with General Mills! They left out their newest monster, coolest monster and while I'm not a particularly social warrior type of ghoul, it's notable that the character they left out is the first and only female monster they have ever introduced. Basically what I'm trying to say is… WHERE THE HECK IS CARMELLA CREEPER!? Did General Mills actually discontinue her? Carmella Creeper was amazing! Was it because her cereal wasn't very popular? Granted, caramel apple flavored cereal isn't exactly the most appealing flavor in the world, but let's be honest here. With the exception of Count Chocula, all the monster cereals taste like cubes of sugar-coated styrofoam! I'm sorry, they just do! Nobody buys these for the cereal. The only reason people buy them is for the monsters. And Carmella Creeper was a fantastic new monster and I'm upset that she wasn't given her due. I'd like to know what YOU think about the notable exclusion of Carmella Creeper from this year's Monster Cereal lineup. This holiday cartoon, released at the beginning of 1938, turns many Popeye conventions on their ear: Popeye and Bluto are pals and don't fight each other. Popeye is more focused on Olive Oyl's grandmother than Olive Oyl herself. And no real violence of any sort actually occurs! This might make it sound like a boring Popeye cartoon, but is that truly the case? Listen to find out!

Segar created it on January 17, 1929. The comic was originally centered around Olive Oyl, but the popularity of Popeye changed that. By 1933, Popeye had his own cartoon series. “I Yam What I Yam” is the first cartoon with Popeye as the main character. The popularity of the comic increased steadily. Popeye made his silver screen debut in July of 1933. Popeye single-handedly boosted the sales of spinach in the U.S. Before spinach became the source of Popeye's super strength, his power came from rubbing the head of a magical Whiffle Hen named Bernice!

With Robin Williams in the titular role, Duvall as Olive Oyl; we weren't sure what to expect. And that's exactly what we got. Did you ever think you would hear a Popeye podcast? Jack Mercer was a voice actor and one of his cartoon characters was Popeye the Sailor Man. He did Felix the Cat and others that he'll talk about, and he'll provide some samples. Jack also read the opening lines for the Popeye movie starring Robin Williams. Mercer's first wife Margie Hines, was the voice of Olive Oyl.

Comic Strip Underdog: Robert Altman's Popeye This week we look to the fans with a special episode dedicated to WatchThis supporter, Jorge Saucedo. Mr. Saucedo asked that we take a look at the much-maligned 1980 Robert Altman comic strip adaptation, Popeye. This was a great time re-visiting a classic of my youth and, although Popeye is not Mr. Chavez's type of film - good guy hero, comic strip adaptation, musical - there is a great deal that he admired in this 80s Classic. Featuring Robin Williams (in his debut role) as the famed Sailor Man, a supporting cast including: Ray Walston (Poopdeck Pappy) Paul Dooley (Wimpy), Paul L. Smith (Bluto), Bill Irwin (Ham Gravy), Richad LIbertini (George W. Geezil), and - in perfect casting - Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl, Popeye is a film that is remembered fondly. For too long it has been unfairly labeled a "disaster", but the truth is it is a charming, beautiful, and light-hearted adaptation of the E.C. Segar comic strips of the 1930s. This was a fun time remembering a classic of the 1980s. We hope you like what we have to say. Thanks for the continued support. We can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Popeye starts off our look at cartoon shorts in the year 1936, with him, Bluto and Olive Oyl heading up to the snowy mountains for shenanigans! The Popeye shorts are increasingly becoming the Fleischer Brother's premier series, eclipsing the still-ongoing Betty Boop series by this point. Does this short show why the series gained such dominance, or does it make Popeye's success all the more baffling? Shiver me timbers and blow me down! Comfort Films Podcast is dropping anchor in Sweethaven to start a month of celebrating Robin Williams films! In this first episode of the series, we're joined by guest Jenn Riedell for a surreal trip down memory lane as we discuss this buried treasure of a musical, directed by Robert Altman and scripted by Jules Feiffer. Featuring Robin Williams in his first lead role in film, Popeye is also a vehicle for a magical soundtrack of songs from 70s pop star Harry Nilsson. We discuss the amazing set built in Malta, which still exists as a tourist attraction, Shelley Duvall's totally iconic performance as Olive Oyl, Ray Walston's crotchety and hilariously named character Poopdeck Pappy, the bizarre religious underpinnings of Popeye's famous catchphrase, the film's comic strip origins, the many talented circus performers who bring the film to life, and the birth of home video, which paved the way for young Gen Xers to start watching and rewatching comfort movies (complete with some bad humming of the HBO theme song from the 80s). Pop open a can of spinach and give us a listen!
It's time for another Popeye cartoon - and one that's part of his actual series, instead of technically a Betty Boop cartoon! This one's a bit of a musical, set to the song of the same name as the short, and features a much more expressive version of Popeye, along with an Olive Oyl who sounds more like what she's known for. Do we end up enjoying it? Listen to find out! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howsitholdup/support
It's time for another big cartoon star to enter the stage: Popeye the Sailor Man! But rather than debuting in his own series, ol' Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto first appear in a Betty Boop cartoon! Boop herself is indeed in the cartoon, though she's hardly the main character of it. How does this first outing of the iconic spinach-eating strongman hold up so many years later? And, perhaps related... how much do you know about old carnival games? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howsitholdup/support

Popeye was adapted to radio in several series broadcast over three different networks by two sponsors from 1935 to 1938. Popeye and most of the major supporting characters were first featured in a thrice-weekly 15-minute radio program, Popeye the Sailor, which starred Detmar Poppen as Popeye, along with most of the major supporting characters—Olive Oyl (Olive Lamoy), Wimpy (Charles Lawrence), Bluto (Jackson Beck) and Swee'Pea (Mae Questel). In the first episode, Popeye adopted Sonny (Jimmy Donnelly), a character later known as Matey the Newsboy. This program was broadcast Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights at 7:15pm. September 10, 1935, through March 28, 1936, on the NBC Red Network (87 episodes), initially sponsored by Wheatena. a whole-wheat breakfast cereal, which routinely replaced the spinach references. Music was provided by Victor Irwin's Cartoonland Band. Announcer Kelvin Keech sang (to composer Lerner's "Popeye" theme) "Wheatena is his diet / He asks you to try it / With Popeye the sailor man." Wheatena paid King Features Syndicate $1,200 per week. The show was next broadcast Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:15 to 7:30pm on WABC and ran from August 31, 1936, to February 26, 1937 (78 episodes). Floyd Buckley played Popeye, and Miriam Wolfe portrayed both Olive Oyl and the Sea Hag. Once again, reference to spinach was conspicuously absent. Instead, Popeye sang, "Wheatena's me diet / I ax ya to try it / I'm Popeye the Sailor Man". The third series was sponsored by the maker of Popsicles three nights a week for 15 minutes at 6:15 pm on CBS from May 2, 1938, through July 29, 1938. Of the three series, only 20 of the 204 episodes are known to be preserved.
The first Disney film to feature a cuss word, and the first film to feature Robin Williams (and Linda Hunt if we're keeping score). It's Popeye, the 1980 musical comedy by Robert Altman. In this episode we visit the island of Malta to delve into what movie Altman was trying to make, where Swee'Pea's psychic powers came from, and whether or not you should ship Popeye and Olive Oyl. Plus, we build a monument to Robin Williams! So open up a can of spinach and join us for a movie conversation that's odd, informative, and somehow involves legos and tattoos.email: openmicmovies@latertaterfilms.comwebsite: openmicmovies.buzzsprout.cominstagram: @latertaterfilms

Phil & Jake rank the very necessary activity of sleep, the very American foodstuff called peanut butter, and the very mustachioed actor Sam Elliott on the List of Every Damn Thing.VOTE HERE to help decide which topic we're going to re-rank on an upcoming episode. Polls are almost closed! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: For the second time in recent episodes we discuss the songs of Chubby Checker (both "The Limbo Rock" and “Let's Twist Again”). I Know What You Did Last Summer was a post-Scream 90s horror movie. The title of the sequel was I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which Phil doesn't approve of. The Karina Longsworth podcast You Must Remember This had a recent episode about Flashdance & Risky Business as part of the current season which is about sex in movies (which used to be a thing). Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania where the Allegheny & the Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio. Phil claims that old Popeye cartoons are much more Olive Oyl and Bluto-centric than you'd think. Some of the better Popeye cartoons aren't streamable because WB's not crazy about the themes. Phil's favorite is "Can You Take It" in which Olive gets a job as a nurse for an underground fight club. Thimble Theater was the original comic strip that Popeye sprung out of. Freddy Krueger was a villain in horror movies in the 80s who attacks people in their dreams. Phil has only ever seen the third Nightmare on Elm Street, where Laurence Fishburne is an orderly at a hospital for traumatized kids and the kids flip the script on Freddy and defeat him. Phil mentions a French scientist who thought sleep was a distraction, and caused himself health problems by staying awake for long periods. This may have been something his parents told him as a kid to get him to sleep. He doesn't know why the scientist was French either. We talk about “sack hounds” and “sack artists”. Phil had always understood these to mean lazy people who could sleep wherever. After looking it up on WW2-era slang websites it seems like a “sack artist” is more like a womanizer whereas a “sack hound” is someone who tries to sleep. Beetle Bailey is a simple, gag-based comic strip with a military setting. Peanut butter is traditionally made of peanuts, smashed. That's why Phil's idea of selling roasted peanuts as extremely crunchy peanut butter makes sense. To Phil. Peanut oil is the oil that you can squeeze out of peanuts. In peanut butter jars, it separates and has to be stirred back into the peanut butter. What? You think it'd be better to just have a jar of peanuts so that the oil will stay put? Yeah me too! Almond butter is mashed-up almonds. The Got Milk? ad campaign which emphasized milk's usefulness as a lubricant, was kicked off by a Michael Bay-directed ad in which a guy has jammed so much PB&J into his mouth that he can't say "Aaron Burr" to win a radio contest. It's a very common problem. George Washington Carver invented about three hundred products derived from peanuts, but did not invent peanut butter. Peanuts are legumes that are eaten as food in the world and are especially popular in the USA, Nigeria and Thailand. Phil used to work with someone who was Thai and she said that Americans all eat rancid peanuts in contrast to Thailand where they eat fresh ones. We're afraid she might be right! Phil went looking for pics of Lucy Pinder to link to and found this which is an NFT of a picture of her. We hope she gets a cut of this. Realizing that Lucy Pinder is a real person has taught Phil empathy. Boiled peanuts are a fantastic Southern food. They come in a wet paper bag (the kind that so many people have trouble fucking their way out of). Sam Elliott was on the Mission: Impossible TV show back in the early 1970s. He looked good even without the mustache. We talk about a few movies, including The Big Lebowski, Power of the Dog, Young Guns and Tombstone. We also talk reflect on the Western and superhero movie genres in general. Here's the Sam Elliott episode of WTF with Marc Maron. Malk was the name of an alternative milk in a gag on the Simpsons from 1995. It's now a real product. Time for some shorts! First, we'll watch the nearsighted Mr. Magoo entrusted with the care of baby Homer. Maybe this is what happened to Homer Simpson. Next, a few tales from the Wizard of Oz will show us how to deal with various stomach ailments. We'll check out the Pink Panther and Little Man as they invent the sport that will sweep the squid-kid world after the icecaps melt. And of course, we'll watch Olive Oyl learn to stand up for herself when a shocking turn of events leads to HER having to fight for Popeye! Plus, Micah digs into stuff he's always wanted to finish, and Matsy muses on another classic British sitcom and it's animation potential. Hit "Play" and win your arguments! We are gob-smacked to have her on our podcast. Her daily blog, “Letters from An American” is required reading for many of us. I wake up and read her first thing. Others, can't get to sleep without taking in her incredible and seemingly effortless gift of putting the news of the day--no matter how distressing – into a un-stuffy, almost chatty, historical context. We know she's been up til the wee hours writing it –with footnotes! Her podcast, Now & Then, is a joy. And her Facebook live lectures…don't even get me started. The woman never sleeps. But––who knew she was a foodie? She cut her teeth making whoopie pies with her sisters in Maine. She's an expert bread baker, the keeper of the family recipes…a lover of community cookbooks working on her own. In our conversation, she uses her uncanny insights to put food into a political, historical, and cultural context. Chaz and his wife, Jennifer were at an engagement party this past weekend, and the whole thing was nearly a disaster. The dog went missing, it rained the whole time, and Jennifer almost took herself out trying to open a bottle of Prosecco. Chaz and AJ had the story from Russia, where a pair of thrill-seekers were caught on camera going over the edge of a cliff when a swing-set failed. Chaz and AJ joined the majority of fans who felt Denise earned the upset victory, even though the judges' decision didn't go her way. (26:12) Dumb Ass News - While listening to AJ's comments about Popeye and a boxing Olive Oyl, intern Chris was reminded of a viral clip from Family Feud a year ago. There was a big controversy over the clip, because Ashley was convinced she already shared this clip with everyone over a year ago. We are talking about brain health, and how to preserve yours. Our guest today is the amazing Dr. Annie Fenn, OB/GYN turned chef and brain health specialist. Annie explains how what we eat drastically affects the health of our brain as we age, and how good food choices can minimize our risk of Alzheimer's and other dementias. Listen on to hear what is good for your brain health and what you might want to avoid. Dr. Annie Fenn is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist specialized in menopausal health. After practicing medicine for more than 20 years in Jackson, WY, she realized that helping people change what they eat was just as effective a health-giving intervention as prescribing pills or procedures. She traded her stethoscope for an apron and went back to school to study culinary arts in Mexico, Italy, and at the Culinary Institute of America. In 2015, Dr. Fenn founded the Brain Health Kitchen, and evidence-based online resource about how and what to eat to resist cognitive decline. The Brain Health Kitchen Cooking School, founded in 2017, is the only school of its kind focused specifically on fending off Alzheimer's and other dementias. Students learn which foods are most neuroprotective, which ones accelerate cognitive decline, and how to prepare foods using brain-friendly cooking techniques. Dr. Fenn partners with the Aspen Brain Institute as the host and moderator of a Brain-Healthy Cooking series with leading neuroscientists and physicians in the brain health world. Dr. Fenn takes her cooking school on the road to provide classes throughout the country and abroad. Dr. Fenn lectures frequently about the impact of lifestyle and diet on Alzheimer's risk as part of the Sempre Sano Wellness Retreat in Tuscany, Italy, as a frequent Visiting Chef at Rancho La Puerta, and at diverse venues throughout the country—women's and men's groups, churches, schools, and wellness retreats. To date, more than one thousand participants have enrolled in the hands-on cooking school. Dr. Fenn serves on the Science Advisory Board for actor Seth Rogen and his wife Lauren's HFC (Hilarity For Charity) where she also creates content geared towards helping caregivers eat for brain health. She partners with Maria Shriver and the Women's Alzheimer's Movement to host events to fund grants for female-specific dementia research. She serves on the Scientific Advisory Council for the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation and is a Scientific Advisor for NeuroReserve. Dr. Fenn is currently under contract with Artisan Books for a science-based brain-healthy cookbook due out in 2022. A 25-year resident of Jackson, Wyoming, Dr. Fenn has served on the boards of Community Safety Network, Teton County Public Health Department, Teton Science Schools, and Hole Food Rescue. She partners with the local hospital to provide the Brain Works 7-day Boot Camp, a novel community-based dementia prevention program. When not developing recipes, writing, or teaching the Brain Health Kitchen method of cooking, Dr. Fenn enjoys hiking, cycling, skiing, fly-fishing, and foraging for mushrooms and huckleberries with her husband, sons, and dogs Orzo and Olive Oyl. Perceived as something like a disaster during its time, Robert Altman's bizarre realization of E.C. Segar's beloved cartoon sailor with an affinity for spinach is at once a confounding but astonishingly enrapturing collage of comic slapstick humor, Altman-esque naturalism and scale, and a train wreck musical adaptation all packaged into one, not entirely cohesive, film. Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall are some inspired casting decisions for the roles of Popeye and Olive Oyl, and their studious commitments to reveling in the lunacy of live action cartoon antics is one of the reasons Popeye manages to be an endearing mess, as the gravitas of the lavishly designed setting of Sweet Haven clashes with the meandering plot, while simplistic rote musical numbers occasionally pop in to delay the proceedings even further. It's not often we look at a film with such a disparaging reputation as this, but something about Popeye and its wholesale commitment to the quirks and eccentricities of everyone involved in the production makes it a fascinating, and still overall entertaining, venture as a product of the blockbuster boom of the late 1970s swallowing the last vestiges of creative ambition provided to the directorial talents of Altman and his ilk after the collapse of the long-heralded Studio System of Hollywood's Golden Age. Nintendo Power Cast Episode 170 Music On Being Human Unofficial Nintendo Podcast Ad readAudibletrial.com/npc Opseat N64josh.com/opseat Patreon.com/N64Josh History of Super Mario Bros 1980 Nintendo was struggling to stay afloat and Shigeru Miyamoto game Radar Scope was a flop and Nintendo needed a good game quick. Miyamoto wanted to create a Popeye game that featured a love triangle between Bluto, Olive Oyl, and Popeye, but Nintendo couldn’t secure the rights. Miyamoto decided to keep the love triangle idea and Donkey was born. One of Donkey Kong’s defining features was that fact that the game had a plot and cutscenes to move that plot. Donkey Kong would kidnap Mr.Video’s Girl and Mr.Video, a carpenter, would have to scale the construction site to rescue his girl. Mr. Video Soon became Jumpman and thanks to an angry land named Mario Segale his final name would be Mario. Fast forward five years 1985 and Mario and his brother Luigi embark on an adventure to save Princess Toadstool. Here’s the story from the instruction manual. One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks, and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king. Mario, the hero of the story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People’s plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People. No, this SquadCast has nothing to do with Olive Oyl's beefy beau, but everything - literally EVERYTHING - to do with Pops. What are Pops you ask? Of course you didn't, there's not a soul on Planet Earth who has not crossed paths with Funko's ubiquitous vinyl cash cow (is there a Funko Cash Cow Pop vinyl? Is it vaulted?). We introduce you to Arnold, Funko Pop collector, no, connoisseur, and keep-em-in-the-box stickler. On the other side of the mic is Patti who unboxes (nearly) every one and does so right in front of Arnold, who ripped his lavalier mic off and walked off set. Just kidding. We don't use lavs. But he WAS visibly flabbergasted. Come see what's Pop'pin with the Squad!
Sorry for the delay in a real episode this week, but Efrem went to HerosCon instead! Go to our website pettheoriespodcast.com and check out the great drawings of Olive Oyl that he got made.
You know what they say, when the J's away, H and Q will watch classic cartoon based comedies from the 80s! That old saying rings true as this week J may or may not be dead, kidnapped, or off on a life-changing Malta based haberdashery outreach. Q grabs Show Friend H and introduces her to the 1980 Robin Williams classic Popeye. They talk spinach, what a man what a man what a mighty good man Popeye is, and whether a baby gets murdered or not. When they aren't talking about how much they miss J and how horrendously written Olive Oyl is, they deep dive into discussion of diseases, what constitutes being an X-MAN, and psychic song prediction...like seriously, what's going on with that? Kick back with an all-new #MarsdenMinute pitching Jason Marsden's latest hair-based business endeavor. So grab your corncob pipe and strap in for an all-new episode that critics have called "People are still talking about Popeye?"
I was picking at a recent wound yestereday and I found this episode under the scab. It's about Popeye, no wait, it's about Olive Oyl. It's about which ever charcater gets us more downloads. She's not Marvel or DC, but she did first appear in a comic strip called Thimble Theatre. Enjoy you dummies.
Earthquake update, War of the Worlds, pimple popping craze, Cornhole names, Signs guys always miss from gals. Popeye and Olive Oyl call Dr Phil. Celebrity Birthdays, Sports Update
Grab your whistle and pickaxe, because this week, the boys are taking a (literal) deep dive into Made in Abyss amidst many goofs and tears. Olive Oyl not included.
Popeye begins his movie career by singing his theme song, demonstrating his strength at a carnival, dancing the hula with Betty Boop, pummeling Bluto, eating his spinach and saving Olive Oyl from certain doom on the railroad tracks. IMDB.

This week! We talk about Delta Airlines tightening rules for service animals, paw-preference and stress in cats, and the most News for Dogs story ever! Man. Bites. (Police) Dog. Also, your questions about what kind of dog to get, carpets and cats and landlords . . . and catupulting foxhounds. Plus Efrem interrupts Beyond Sit! to find out how to teach Olive Oyl how to roll over.
Should my dog sitter post pictures online of my dogs? And why does my cat torture everything before it kills it? Also this week, we also look at a study that about the deep roots of emotion in our evolution and a team of cross-country runners takes shelter dogs out for a run. Plus, we follow up with Olive Oyl's circus skills! In the lab... everyone can understand your scream!
http://www.biblestudytools.com/ephesians/passage/?q=ephesians+5:21-30 (Ephesians 5:21-30) Do you love church? Or do you love the Church? I remind you, the Church is not a building of brick and mortar, or wood, plaster, sheet rock, and shingles. The Church is the people, the people of God. One of the scriptural images of the Church – believers in Jesus Christ – is that the Church is the bride and Jesus Christ is the bridegroom. Scripture makes clear as we read from Ephesians that Jesus Christ loves the Church. The Church is full of imperfect people, yet Jesus is crazy about His people in love, committed to our well-being, sacrificial in serving us. His love for us is unconditional and eternal. So I'd like to explore some powerful truths about Jesus the Bridegroom and those who believe in Jesus as the bride of Christ. First, Jesus is the Bridegroom who pursues the Church to rescue her. As in Ephesians 5, “. . . as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her. . . .” Anytime a wife would be in danger, the husband, because of his love, would put his life on the line to rescue her. I recently read a story in the newspaper of a man in Gwembe, Zambia Africa. In the year 2011, his wife was snatched by a big crocodile while she was washing clothes in the river. The man dove into the river and swam to where the big crock had his wife in his jaws. He grabbed the crocodile around the belly and dragged it back to the shallows. Then he jammed his hand and arm into the mouth of crocodile and began to beat the crock on the head with a stick until finally it released it's grip on his wife and tried to snatch the husband in it's jaws. The crocodile missed the husband and swam away. Both husband and wife were bloody but safe. The husband had rescued his wife. Jesus is the Bridegroom who rescues His people, the bride of Christ. He does it in love at great sacrifice. Every Popeye has his Olive Oyl. Every Tarzan is willing to rescue his Jane. I love reading Louis L'Amour westerns where the hero cowboy defeats the evil people, and in the end gets the girl. This is the Bible's eternal plot line. Jesus comes for His people to rescue us in love and defeat the evil one. Jesus is the Bridegroom who pursues us to rescue us in love, but He also comes as the Bridegroom to propose to His beloved. It's an invitation of love that requests a response. This is the nature of love – to confess it and risk rejection. Do you remember the movie “Runaway Bride” where Julia Roberts plays the character Maggie Carpenter? The movie is called “Runaway Bride” because Maggie has been engaged multiple times but always leaves her betrothed husband standing at the altar. The essence of the lifetime love that God offers us in Jesus Christ is not one only based on momentary passion or feeling. God offers us a covenant of love that evokes a commitment of love and trust from us. The Bridegroom and the bride are invited to say I do, and our yes to Jesus Christ invites us to say yes in faith in response to Jesus Christ. Have you ever, in a simple prayer of faith, said Yes, Jesus. I believe in You. God's Spirit continually whispers His invitation that we would share His love and His life day by day in a covenant of love. Jesus is also the Bridegroom who protects His bride to keep her safe in His arms of love. In Psalm 62 we read, “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone.” When the arms of Jesus' promises surround us, our faith trusts His strength. Jesus is our safe place. His strength holds us up. We hide in His love. But that type of protective love also is a jealous love. In Exodus, it says, “I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God” (20:5). God is not insecure or paranoid. He tolerates no rivals. Intimacy by definition means being exclusive to one. God is a jealous God who wants us to love Him above all others. Do you remember when God asked Hosea to take a prostitute to be his wife as a living image of the Lord's love for His people, Israel? Hosea's love...
Of all the films Drew and Scott have championed on the show, none are as thoroughly beloved as this: Robert Altman's bizarre, unique, touching, and authentic adaptation of the classic comic strip, giving star Robin Williams one of his earliest opportunities to show he was more than just Mork; and casting Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl - which is still the single most perfect piece of comic movie casting in film history.

June 6, 2016 - Today, our time machine heads back to our show's past, serving up a special, all-new paperback interview with a familiar voice. Back in August of 2015, we kicked off the show with the words, "Three mules, two brothers, and a Jack Russell terrier named Olive Oyl." Our guest was Rinker Buck, and his book -- The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey -- recounted the trek he made with his brother Nick in a covered wagon, two thousand miles from Missouri to the great American Northwest. In the months since hitting shelves, The Oregon Trail has wended its way up the New York Times best-seller list to #1, and Amazon.com named it the best non-fiction book of 2015. When completing the first mule-powered crossing of this legendary pioneer trail in over a century, Rinker met a lot of people -- and he met them, in a new light, after they'd had a chance to see the enthusiastic response to how he shared their story. With the paperback edition of The Oregon Trail appearing in bookstores June 7, 2016, we thought, why not bring Rinker back to hear about his experiences on the tour following publication. After all, he only set out to write a book. But his pen sparked a national phenomenon, which you can share by visiting Facebook.com/RinkerBuck. Other books discussed on this episode include: Flight of Passage, by Rinker Buck. The Road from Coorain, by Jill Ker Conway. A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, by Norman Maclean. Young Men and Fire, by Norman Maclean. Angela's Ashes, by Frank McCourt. America Revised, by Francis FitzGerald. Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, by James W. Loewen. Also, we mentioned William L. Shirer's five books on Nazi Germany.
It's Episode 5 of the podcast that decides 'Which is the Best?' out of things with identical or similar names but with swearing in it and that. This week: Olive oil or Olive Oyl! Which is the best, a slippery liquid for putting on salads or Popeye's 'will they/won't they?' harridan girlfriend? AND This Morning or this morning? ITV's unsettling morning magazine show or our actual mornings the day we recorded this. WITH THREE NEW JINGLES!
