The latest episode of Blues is the Truth is live, hosted as always by Ian McHugh and proudly sponsored by the Tuesday Night Blues Jam at the Rising Sun, Isleworth. This week's show is packed with the regular features you love, plus some very special news — there's gig news to share and details of a brand new festival being planned in tribute to the late, great Robert Hokum. The music is as rich and varied as ever. You'll hear the guitar mastery of Duke Robillard, the unforgettable partnership of Monster Mike Welch and Mike Ledbetter, and the soulful fire of Larry McCray. Blues royalty is in the spotlight with tracks from BB King, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the one and only Muddy Waters. The British scene is well represented too, with the Chris Corcoran Trio, Robert Hokum and Devil Drives, Connie Lush, Michael Messer, Dave Kelly, Kai Strauss, and Chris Youlden and the Slammers all stepping up to the plate. You'll also catch standout performances from Doyle Bramhall II, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, The Forty4s, John Lee Hooker, Coco Montoya, and the team-up of Jimmie Vaughan and Omar Kent Dykes. It's a show that mixes legends with modern greats, delivers plenty of news alongside the music, and celebrates the very best in blues from both sides of the Atlantic.

Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: September 3, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS9: E5: Little Bihlman (John Fogerty, Jelly Roll, Grinder Blues) - Sonic EvolutionSHOW SUMMARY:Ever wonder what happens when a multi-instrumentalist with four Emmy Awards decides to channel Pink Floyd through a modern rock lens? Little Bihlman's upcoming album "Heavy Head" answers that question with authority.  Returning to Backstage Pass Radio, Little Bihlman shares the creative journey behind his darkest, most ambitious record to date. Having toured and recorded with legends spanning from BB King to Ted Nugent, Hank Williams Jr. to Jelly Roll, and even Pink, Little Bihlman brings decades of musical expertise to this Floyd-influenced collection. "I'm a rocker," he admits, despite his versatility across blues, country, and other genres.  The conversation takes us deep into the making of "Heavy Head," set for release through V13 Music with its first single dropping August 8th. Little Bihlman previews "Fade Away," a straight-ahead rocker featuring guitar work from Shrapnel Records founder Mike Varney, while explaining why his favorite track remains the Floyd-esque title song. For an artist who's played countless sessions and toured extensively, this record represents a personal milestone—one where he follows his "goosebumps" rather than chasing trends.  Beyond music, Little Bihlman reveals his recent role as a mobster in the upcoming Nicolas Cage film "Spider-Man Noir" and discusses his forthcoming memoir. He offers candid insights about the modern music industry, advocating for independent approaches over traditional record deals unless "they're gonna blow you out." It's a masterclass in artistic sustainability from someone who's survived and thrived across decades of industry changes.  Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering him for the first time, Little Bihlman's blend of technical prowess, storytelling, and authentic rock energy promises something special with "Heavy Head." Follow him on Instagram and Facebook, or visit scottbihlman.com to stay updated on release dates, tour information, and merchandise availability. The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry

Send us a textEver wondered what it would be like to completely reinvent yourself after a successful career? Christopher Wyze's remarkable journey from advertising executive to blues musician proves it's never too late to follow your passion.Growing up in Indiana, Christopher's introduction to blues came when his college-aged brother brought home BB King and Bobby Blue Bland records. Though the music resonated with him, life took him in a different direction – building a career in marketing, running an advertising agency, and writing books. Music remained a distant memory until a chance encounter at a church wine dinner twenty years ago led to an impromptu performance that changed everything. When invited to front a local band, Christopher embraced the opportunity despite having been away from music for decades. Feeling he needed to contribute more than just vocals, he taught himself harmonica and eventually found his way to Clarksdale, Mississippi – the heart of delta blues country. There, he met Ralph Carter, former musical director for Eddie Money, who became his producer and collaborator. Their partnership led to recording sessions at the legendary Muscle Shoals studios and a record deal with Big Radio Records, a company with direct ties to Sam Phillips, who discovered Elvis and Howlin' Wolf. What makes Christopher's story particularly fascinating is how his life experience shaped his music. Unlike genres where youth dominates, blues benefits from the authenticity that comes with age. As Christopher puts it, "This music doesn't happen without experience." His background as a writer and marketer gave him unique tools for songwriting and promoting his music. Perhaps most remarkably, his song "Three Hours from Memphis" – written while driving to meet his producer – unwittingly predicted his own journey before it fully unfolded.Ready to be inspired by a second-act success story? Listen as Christopher shares how embracing the blues led him to find joy, purpose, and unexpected friendships in the later chapters of his life.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/Christopher Wyze: https://christopherwyzeandthetellers.com/ Support the show

Episode 328: While it's one of the great music cities in the world, the story of Memphis, TN is generally told as one about Elvis, BB King, Isaac Hayes, and possibly Justin Timberlake - artists from the history books or well on in their careers. Roots music fans might know more contemporary talents like songwriters Amy LaVere and John Paul Keith. Many others simmer along in that city's bars and clubs, but one has to go there to get up to speed on the talent pool. Southern Avenue is different - a breakout band from Bluff City with national acclaim, a renowned record label, and a musical voice grounded in native soil and native soul. It's the band today's Memphis has needed. Craig speaks with the married couple out front in the band, guitarist Ori Naftaly and singer Tierinii Jackson.

John Otway – self-billed as “Rock And Roll's Greatest Failure” - has played 5,260 gigs in 53 years, a record possibly only beaten by BB King. There are more this autumn of course. He simply can't stop. “People buying me drinks and telling me what a good bloke I am? Why would you stop?” We talk to him here about the art of shambling stagecraft and a life lived almost permanently on the road, which involves … ... a burning desire to perform from the age of nine. … “Don't think before opening your mouth!” … the rhythm of life when you play two gigs a week for five decades. And the value of ‘Micro-stardom' - “I'm at the bar when they walk in”. … seeing the Move, Free and Mott the Hoople in Aylesbury. … how people always noticed him – not least because “I was idiot-dancing by the bass speakers”. ... his first performance, a massively overwrought version of Peter Sarstedt's Where Do You Go To My Lovely. … best-selling Otway merch - “I Can't Believe It's Not Better! It's Nearly Rock And Roll But I Like It!” etc. … “You have to capture an audience in the first 20 seconds.” ... why playing the same size venues every night doesn't challenge you. … a recent three-month ‘trial retirement'. … when he estimates he'll play his 6,000th gig. … and his planned and bank-breaking 2026 World Tour. Mid-Michigan's Boss Hog of the blues, your #1 Blues Man, Larry McCray returns to the music bins and online lists with his second helping from the Josh Smith/Joe Bonamassa production stall on June 13, with Heartbreak City. The KTBA Records follow up to 2022's Blues Without You brings McCray back to his roots and offers more than a glimpse of vocal power, delivery, and searing solos that have been his trademark for his illustrious career, nearing 50 years, 35 on the professional circuit as a household name.    Larry stopped by the MMHP989 Studio inside of the Michigan Rock Legends Hall of Fame in Downtown Bay City to give the early word in February on his recording trip to Los Angeles with the team last fall. At the time of this interview, 12 songs were recorded. 10 made the final cut and one of the two cut are a bonus digital download for the streaming services. Bye Bye Blues is already hitting the airwaves and McCray is in the midst of working up tour plans, based around his health and the annual Fall tour with Devon Allman/Allman Betts team that he has been on for three years. McCray takes the team behind the scenes for the writing of Heartbreak City with Peggy Smith, Charlie Walmsley, Josh Smith, as well as MMHP's own Scott Baker, the forward momentum he has been rolling with after getting a blues resurgence over the past few years, and of course tips his cap with great stories about meeting and playing with blues legends such as BB King, Albert King, Johnny Winter, Joe Bonamassa, and the Allman Brothers Family, amongst others. Get your blues on Michigan Music Fans, Brother Larry is back to sing you the blues and bring it on home!

Today on another brand new episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we bring you part one of two episodes with Rodd Bland, son of the genius blues, soul, gospel & rhythm & blues singer Bobby “Blue” Bland. Best friends with B.B. King, & called the Frank Sinatra of the Blues – Bobby has more inductions into more museums and Hall of Fame's than an Amana Radar Range. Known for his soulful voice and his signature phrasing, Bobby was truly one of the greats. He also was also known for a guttural sound he made while singing that we get into on this episode. What started as a cue from a preacher became a sound that the ladies loved. No one did it like Bobby. Our conversation with Rodd dovetailed into many topics, including musicians such as ZZ Top to Pearl Jam, Taylor Hawkins to Jay-Z who were all influenced by “Blue.” We also talk about his father's late career resurgence thanks to films and television. From Spiderman the Animated Movie, to The Lincoln Lawyer and American Gangster, all roads seemed to lead back to “Blue”'s tunes in trailers, opening scenes in films and the like. Rodd tells us a rather touching story about when his father first heard one of his songs in a film that left us misty eyed. Along the way, we discuss what it was like touring in the Chitlin' Circuit, we touch on – albeit briefly – Don Robey and the Duke / Peacock years at the beginning of his career and a little known fact about Bobby that perhaps makes this episode an unleavened experience with a singer nicknamed as Sonny Boy that even Rodd didn't know. We had to call his mom to confirm it and she pretty much did. So sit back, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast with Rodd Bland discussing everything from “Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City,” and “Further Up The Road” “Cry, Cry, Cry” & “I Pity The Fool.” But not, “Member's Only.” That one we saved for our Patreon page where we hear an exclusive, bonus episode, you won't hear anywhere else. Another child of a celebrity, interviewed by a child of a celebrity. Everyone has a story.

I'm delighted to have Phillip-Michael Scales on the show this week!!  Phillip-Michael is a uniquely talented songwriter, singer, and showman with a special knack for storytelling, an infectiously charismatic onstage vibe and a hardcore work ethic that has kept him happily pursuing his muse along his long road to success.Even more exciting, Phillip-Michael has a super new album on the horizon, entitled Good To Be Here, due out on April 25, produced by Dan Knobler (Lake Street Dive, Allison Russell, Bahamas). Recorded live with a full band of noted Nashville players, this album marks an exciting new stage in Phillip-Michael's creative life.Phillip-Michael and I talk about everything from his European sojourns, to growing up in Detroit with roles in musical theatre as a young kid. He's a natural born performer, and an amazing Roadcase guest. I can't wait for y'all to hear this one!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Elvis Presley loved the Memphis singer Johnny Ace. Johnny died long before Elvis' became the King of Rock ‘N' Roll and the way in which Johnny Ace died was as tragic as it was violent. It involved a game of Russian roulette, a greedy and dubious rock ‘n' roll impresario, BB King, Big Mama Thornton, Little Richard, and a killer conspiracy and music history myth in desperate need of busting. Buckle up for a Christmas story like no other. What are your favorite rock 'n' roll myths? Which ones need busting?
