Today on another brand new episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we bring you part one of two episodes with Rodd Bland, son of the genius blues, soul, gospel & rhythm & blues singer Bobby “Blue” Bland. Best friends with B.B. King, & called the Frank Sinatra of the Blues – Bobby has more inductions into more museums and Hall of Fame's than an Amana Radar Range. Known for his soulful voice and his signature phrasing, Bobby was truly one of the greats. He also was also known for a guttural sound he made while singing that we get into on this episode. What started as a cue from a preacher became a sound that the ladies loved. No one did it like Bobby. Our conversation with Rodd dovetailed into many topics, including musicians such as ZZ Top to Pearl Jam, Taylor Hawkins to Jay-Z who were all influenced by “Blue.” We also talk about his father's late career resurgence thanks to films and television. From Spiderman the Animated Movie, to The Lincoln Lawyer and American Gangster, all roads seemed to lead back to “Blue”'s tunes in trailers, opening scenes in films and the like. Rodd tells us a rather touching story about when his father first heard one of his songs in a film that left us misty eyed. Along the way, we discuss what it was like touring in the Chitlin' Circuit, we touch on – albeit briefly – Don Robey and the Duke / Peacock years at the beginning of his career and a little known fact about Bobby that perhaps makes this episode an unleavened experience with a singer nicknamed as Sonny Boy that even Rodd didn't know. We had to call his mom to confirm it and she pretty much did. So sit back, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast with Rodd Bland discussing everything from “Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City,” and “Further Up The Road” “Cry, Cry, Cry” & “I Pity The Fool.” But not, “Member's Only.” That one we saved for our Patreon page where we hear an exclusive, bonus episode, you won't hear anywhere else. Another child of a celebrity, interviewed by a child of a celebrity. Everyone has a story.

Battling The Blues With JOHN CORABI From THE DEAD DAISIES

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersThe Dead Daisies have always had an underlying stream of blues coursing through their music. It is an age-old style of music that has influenced pretty much every conceivable genre over the years, although rock music has benefited the most. With vocalist John Corabi coming back on deck for last year's album Light 'em Up, The Dead Daisies embraced their blues side even more, culminating in late night jam sessions while recording that album at the legendary FAME studios progressing into recording sessions which led to their new album Nothin' But Trouble, which is due out on May 30.The album pays homage to the work of blues legends such as BB King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Howlin Wolf, with The Dead Daisies reworking their classic songs and sprinkling enough of their own DNA through the tracks to make them their own. It is an outstanding body of work from a band with an impressively high back catalogue, and showcases some of the influences that have seen the members hone their craft.HEAVY caught up with Corabi to find out more."You know what I'm excited about so far is that the first two songs that we released have been getting great feedback from everybody," he began. "And as I was saying earlier, this was it was what we call a happy accident. This whole thing came about in such a weird, random way. We went to this legendary studio in America called Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, and it was kind of a bucket list thing for all of us, including Marti Frederiksen (producer). So we went down there with the thought in mind that we would just maybe write and maybe do a little bit of recording down in this legendary studio. It's a legendary place, but also it's a functioning studio, and they do museum tours through this place and each night around dinner time, they bring in 20, 30 people. So we'd take a break. And then we kind of sat and thought about it. We're like, well, okay, the tour was over. We were done eating, and we'd crack open either a bottle of whiskey or some wine. And we thought we could go back to the hotel and sit and watch TV all night, or, we're here, let's just jam. Let's see. Let's just have some fun. So we kind of started jamming some blues that everybody was familiar with, obviously, like Crossroads, Going Down, and Born Under a Bad Sign. And then it was weird, we just kind of sat, and Marti kept the session rolling. We listened and thought, okay, this is really cool. This is really cool, so what we did is during the day we worked on what became the Light 'em Up record, and we just continued working at night and putting together 10 of our favourite blues songs and so far man, everybody's been raving about it."In the full interview, John spoke more about the band's intention to honour their musical roots through a collection of blues tracks. He explained the challenges of reinterpreting classic songs, emphasizing the need to make them their own while maintaining their integrity, using When the Levee Breaks as a reference for transformation. He shared insights on the evolution of specific tracks, such as Terror Plane Blues into Take My Soul, and acknowledged the blues' influence across various genres. We talked about the process behind reworking other people's music, which songs were the easiest to do and which ones more difficult and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We'll be pulling some of the classic blues covers of songs composed by just a small collection of the great blues masters: Charley Patton, Muddy Waters, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, Blind Blake and beyond in this week's episode. The Texas native came to Nashville in 1980 after stints in Ft. Worth and Los Angeles, and not only did he amass an impressive string of country music hits with Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, and more, he became Music City's go-to soul and R&B man, conjuring songs for Bonnie Raitt, Etta James, BB King, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and even Ringo Starr. Now at 74 the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer has turned his own performing/recording life to songs of conscience and social protest, as on his new album Common Sense.

There's no disputing the influence B.B. King has had on the history of electric guitar music. With Lucille in hand—as well as other guitars—he carved out his sound by developing a signature one-of-a-kind vibrato and pick attack. His note choice, phrasing, and feel have basically become the fundamental vocabulary of electric blues. Even more than any other of his blues peers, his playing shaped blues and rock guitar. And that's not to mention his singing. So, on this episode of 100 Guitarists, we're celebrating the King. We're talking about his sound, his best records, his guitars, his showmanship, and his collabs, from an all-star jam at the 2010 Crossroads festival to, yes, even his 1988 U2 collab, “When Love Comes to Town.”In our current listening segment, we're talking about Brian John McBrearty's recent meditation-jazz release Remembering Repeating and Julian Lage's latest, Apple Music Nashville Sessions.Brought to you by Gibson Guitars: http://gibson.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Grace Bowers grew up in Northern California, but when she was not quite 15 years old, her parents decided to move the family to Nashville for better schools and a different kind of life. At first, the culture shock was too much for her, but as Grace became more and more serious about the guitar, she found a music community that recognized her incredible talent—and took her in. Now, at just 18, she and her band, The Hodge Podge, have a new funk and soul-inspired album called Wine on Venus, a title inspired by Grace's grandmother, who passed away not long ago at the age of 100. The album's producer is John Osborne, from the Brothers Osborne, who's become a friend and mentor as she navigates her abrupt rise to stardom. Nolia Noon, an emerging indie rock band from Louisville, Kentucky, draws from a rich palette of influences, spanning the soulful storytelling of Johnny Cash and BB King to the raw energy of Nirvana and Oasis. Formed in 2021, the group initially experimented with different names and lineups before solidifying its identity in July 2022 with its current members: drummer Nick Beach, bassist John Roach, and singer/guitarist Jared Foos. In their debut year, Nolia Noon introduced themselves to the music scene with several singles, including "Roses" released in July 2022. These 2022 tracks quickly garnered attention, with "Roses" earning airplay on Louisville's esteemed 91.9 WFPK and a spotlight feature on the station's website. The band followed up with a music video for "Roses" in September, adding a visual element to their evocative sound. They continued releasing singles in 2023, along with the EP "Holeboy". The name “Nolia Noon” carries a mysterious backstory. While brainstorming, Jared and John landed on the moniker after tweaking the phrase "Magnolia Moon" into something unique. However, an eerie coincidence emerged when they discovered that a woman named Nolia Noon, born on July 4, 1880, and buried in Louisville's Cave Hill Cemetery, shared the name. The connection deepened when they realized lyrics from their song "Love Yourself" referenced the same date, a detail that predated their name choice. Nolia Noon's journey so far includes performances across Louisville's vibrant venues and a headlining slot at a Centre College music festival in Danville, Kentucky, where both Jared and John studied. The band's blend of soulful roots and 90s grunge sensibilities, combined with their organic chemistry, has positioned them as a group to watch. With their captivating stories and distinctive sound, Nolia Noon is carving a unique path in Louisville's music scene and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

Sid talks to Grace about how BB King sparked a passion for music, her obsession with Sly and the Family Stone, her honest feelings about hot chicken, and much more.
