Fielding Edlow is a stand-up comedian, writer, and creator/star of award-winning digital series Bitter Homes and Gardens. She has performed stand-up at Edinburgh, Leicester, Boston Comedy Festival and hosted her sold-out cult show Eat Pray Fuck for 6 years at the Hollywood Improv. Her plays have been produced/workshopped with Naked Angels, New York Stage & Film, Comedy Central Stage, IAMA, and Circle X Theatre. What's the best way to usher in the New Year? On this week's episode, legendary voiceover artist Bill Ratner shares a true story from his early days in Radio: When his green card bride Claudine leaves him, he's alone during the Holidays in an empty double wide and his evening shift duties at KJOI (LA's easy listening music station). So when a fan requests something a bit more intimate than the Percy Faith Orchestra, why not make her happy? And on New Year's Eve, they produce their own live show together over the air waves, using the station's 50,000 watts of power to make the world a bit less lonely. And Dixie ends the year with the story you've been asking her for. #HappyNewYear Song: ‘Love's A Stranger' (Warhaus) New Year l Radio DJ l Drive by Fucking l Anonymous Sex | Music Request Line l Radio Antenna l 1970's l Lubrication l Harlequin Romance Novel l Top of Topanga Mobile Home Park l Double Wide l Vaseline l Instrumental Radio l Muzak l Muumuu | Terrycloth Bathtub Animals l FM Transmitter l Top of the Hour l Station ID l Honda Civic l Radio Console l Blinking LEDs I Percy Faith Orchestra l Middle Age l Smog l Order Up a Man l Microphone l Los Angeles l Happy New Year l Divorce l Radio Tower l Lawrence Welk l Green Card l Quell l Radio Station l Marriage l Swiss l London l LA l Radio Announcer l Chief Engineer l Sales Manager l About our Storyteller: Bill Ratner is one of Hollywood's premier voiceover artists and a published poet, essayist, and fiction writer. “Every rockstar business needs a punk.” - Tania Katan On this episode, the incredible Tania Katan has a riveting conversation with Christopher about how to put the spark of joy back into work and life, how she overcame breast cancer and how it shaped her life. Tania is a powerful example of someone who “used her different” to make her place in the world. She shares the captivating story of how she went from acting, to working in enterprise technology, to becoming an advocate for women in tech, to becoming a successful author and more. Tania is famous for starting the empowerment campaign #ItWasNeverADress. "We don't need to be in a job or a field that is uniquely creative in order to be uniquely creative within the work we do." - Tania Katan Authoring Bestseller “Creative Trespassing” Tania wrote the book as a dialogue and a monologue. This reflects the way she holds her book tours and keynote speeches. She lets her audience talk and give her feedback while she listens to them. Real conversations inspire her. When she went to record the audiobook, she brought a photograph of her friends, family and other people who inspire her to the studio. This allowed her to feel that she was sharing her stories with them. Unpacking the Dedication Tania says that she was born as an outsider. She wrote about the reality of her life and how she found a way to use “outsiderness” or “misfitness” to create a value for both companies and the people around her. Her being different is how she makes a difference. "Embracing the fact that we are misfits and we are flawed allows us to actually take risks and know that the outcome is going to be better than ‘okay'." - Tania Katan We Teach When We Most Need to Learn At the age of 21, her breast was removed to save her life. Following this event, she felt less—“other”—until she came to a realization when she became an adult. Nobody is perfect. Being an outsider can be painful for some people, and this is the epitome of irony. Every human being goes through the same dilemma and we all can feel uncomfortable and scared of becoming misfits. This is where Tania's need and desire to speak for them came from—the need to learn herself. "To be perfect is like to be invisible." - Tania Katan By finding a way to harness her different, Tania is the epitome of “why fit in, when you can stand out”. To hear more about how Tania went from theater to tech industry and how she thinks every rockstar business needs a punk, download and listen to this episode. Bio: Tania Katan is an inspirational speaker, creative consultant and co-creator of the #ItWasNeverADress campaign. She is also the best-selling author of the book, Creative Trespassing. Angela Hoover is a comedian, celebrity impressionist, and a mother of 2. She was a semi-finalist on Season 8 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. She has guest-starred on the Emmy nominated Hulu series, Casual, been a talking head on TLC and Nickelodeon, improv’d opposite Dana Carvey on TBS’s First Impressions, and is currently a recurring cast member on Disney’s Walk the Prank. She has also written and performed 2 sold out one-woman shows at the Lex and the Comedy Central Stage at the Hudson in Los Angeles. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/angelahoover In this episode, Angela discusses: -How from a very young age, she was always interested in other people’s dialects and impersonating them. -A “lightbulb moment” when her father took her to a musical. -Working for Jack Hanfield and the impact that that had on her life and goals. -The story of how she started impersonating Drew Barrymore. -Her experience on America’s Got Talent. -Feeling like you “missed the boat” after a long gap in your creative career. -The notion that acceptance is not resignation. -Having a positive mindset with the situation you are currently in, while still putting out energy into the direction that you want to go. -How she likes to announce that she is going to do something before she even knows if she can do it. -Her 30 days of impressions and the challenges that went into it. -The idea of reverse engineering the happiness, pride, or fulfillment that you feel at the end of your creative endeavor. -Her one-woman shows and the creative process behind them. -The misconception that many creative people have that they are going to immediately come up with gold when they sit down and get to work. -“Blah blah gold.” -Some of the resistances she faces when trying to write as well as being a comedian in general. -Her experience at the Cannes Film Festival and how that motivated her to work harder to be on the other side of the carpet. -The power in admitting how much you want something, even though it might be painful. -How it takes more energy to HIDE from your goals than it does to actually put the work in. Angela's Final Push will inspire you to ask yourself if you are waiting or if you are creating. Quotes: “I felt like this sort of blank canvas and I would just take whoever I was with and become that person.” “I thought I was going to be the short, stubby Julia Roberts.” “Sometimes you feel like if you don’t know if something is going to work out or not in your career, you give yourself the excuse of why practice this anyway?” “The more you make peace with it and make the best out of it, then things change.” “I tend to tell people in public that I’m going to do something before I know if I can do it.” “To expect that you’re going to sit down and just have sheer brilliance move from your fingertips is just such a horrible expectation to put on yourself when you’re going to create something.” “It punched me in the gut that I was on the wrong side. It woke me up, because I realized I was pretending that I didn’t want it as badly as I did.” “Even though it is sometimes a painful thing, admitting how much you want something can give you that initial push and burst of desire that you need to sustain a career that is creative.” “Practice those things that you want to get good at like your opportunity is coming tomorrow. Because it might.” “Are you waiting or are you creating?” Links mentioned: Angela Hoover audition on America's Got Talent Kellyanne Conway spoof (Interviewed by Michigan Mom) Connect with Angela: Website / YouTube / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter What are you going to admit that you desperately want out of your creative passion?
