Chuck Schaden interviewed Tony Randall on September 16th, 1970 at the Ambassador Hotel in Chicago. Eight days later Randall's new series The Odd Couple debuted on ABC. Randall played Felix Unger. The show ran for five seasons and became Randall's most-remembered role. He continued acting until passing away on May 17th, 2004. After I Love A Mystery went off the air, Carlton E. Morse penned a new serial drama entitled Family Skeleton. He cast Mercedes McCambridge in the lead role. The Program would air weeknights on CBS from June 8th, 1953 through March 5th, 1954. It pulled a rating of 3.3 for Sweetheart Soap. Mercedes McCambridge had many trials and tribulations. She was nominated for a second Academy Award for her role in Giant in 1956. She also voiced the demon in The Exorcist. She won a battle with alcoholism and penned an autobiography in 1981 called The Qualities of Mercy. Six years later her son John—a futures trader—was caught embezzling funds under McCambridge's name after she'd given him money to invest. Mercedes refused to cooperate with her son and the company he worked for. They wanted to institute a repayment scheme which would have kept the matter from becoming public. In November of 1987 John wrote a scathing note blaming her for his problems before killing his wife, children, and then himself. Mercedes appeared in one final TV role in 1988. Her second husband, radio and tv writer/producer/director Fletcher Markle, passed away in 1991. She died on March 2nd, 2004 in La Jolla, California.

“For the Lord… with the archangel's call and with the sound of God's trumpet, will descend from heaven and the dead in Christ will rise…” (1 Thess. 4). Yesterday in the brilliant fall colors and dazzling warm light of Los Altos we buried my friend Jim McKnight in the columbarium of our old church. Jim and I had a strange relationship. He is my parent's age. We first met when he was in his fifties and full of wisdom. And yet he had just been ordained the year before and so he didn't know what I did about running churches. For ten years he was my assistant rector. I don't know if I'll ever work so closely with anyone again and we accomplished such surprising things together. He had a wry sense of humor, loved opera. He was humble, dutiful, faithful, very orderly, methodical, detail-oriented, kind, thoughtful, a little high-strung, kind of tense. Jim was still fairly corporate. He would have joked that he was a little neurotic but he wasn't. I still carry lots of advice from him in my thoughts but the first thing that comes to mind is how he said, “trust the process.”[i] [i] I suppose he was the Felix Unger and I was the Oscar Madison in our odd couple.

We have on today, one of the best rom-com and comedy writers and filmmakers of all time a master at visual storytelling. I've been a fan of many of his films growing up, specifically, Father of The Bride. Now that I have two daughters of my own, it is fondly scary to rewatch it.Charles Shyer is an award-winning director, screenwriter, and producer whose work includes some of the best fuzzy-feel good films of all time. Shyer grew up in the film industry where his father worked with D.W. Griffith and was one of the founders of the Directors Guild of America. He is the director and writer of the 1991 comedy film, Father of the Bride starring Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams (in her film debut) in this remake of the Spencer Tracy classic, George (played by Steve Martin) and Nina Banks (played by Diane Keaton) are the parents of young soon-to-be-wed Annie (played by Kimberly Williams-Paisley). George is a nervous father unready to face the fact that his little girl is now a woman. The preparations for the extravagant wedding provide additional comic moments. Martin, a businessman, and owner of an athletic shoe company finds out his daughter is getting married, he finds himself reluctant to let go and goes on a spiral. It is one of those movies with a lot of smiles and laughter in it, and a good feeling all the way through. The film grossed $129 million and has had two sequels of it made in 1995 and 2020.He wrote and co-produced one of the most pivotal films in Lindsey Lohan's career, The Parent Trap (1998). It captured the story of identical twins Annie and Hallie (played by Lohan), separated at birth and each raised by one of their biological parents, later discover each other for the first time at summer camp and make a plan to bring their wayward parents back together.People fell in love with the movie and Lohan's exceptional performance, leading to an instant box-office success with a $92.1 million gross. There are but few writers who are able to master the craft of romantic comedy, and Charles Shyer is one. His films include Private Benjamin (1980), Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Baby Boom (1987), the Father of the Bride sequels, The Affair of the Necklace (2001), etc.Shyer directed Baby Boom and co-wrote it with his long-time writing partner, Nancy Meyers in 1987. It stars Diane Keaton (a super-yuppie J.C) who discovers that a long-lost cousin has died, leaving her a fourteen-month-old baby girl as an inheritance. Like most of his films, this too was a box office success. Her life is thrown into turmoil.J.C. Wiatt is a successful New York businesswoman known around town as the "tiger lady." She gets news of an inheritance from a relative from another country and off the bat she suspects it's money. Well, it's not money, it's a baby girl. At first, she doesn't accept until the lady that gives the baby to her has to catch her flight. J.C. is now stuck with an annoying baby girl. Her boyfriend doesn't like the idea of a baby living with them and he leaves her. J.C. has enough of it and takes her to meet a family ready to adopt her. She leaves but hears the baby cry while walking away and has to go back. The baby is too attached to her now and won't let her go. Later, her baby gets into mischief which causes her to get fired. Now, she sets her eyes on an old two-story cottage in Vermont to get out of New York life. When she arrives, the house needs more help than originally thought. She gets bored one snowy day and decides to make apple sauce. Her baby loves it and she decides to sell it. Pretty soon everyone wants some of the baby apple sauce. J.C. hits it big and falls in love with a local veterinarian.All this happened after he made the switch at the start of his career in the industry, from pursuing directing to writing and landing a gig on the 1970 TV series, The Odd Couple. Where Shyer eventually worked his way up to head writer and associate producer, writing about twenty-four episodes of the show. The sitcom, The Odd Couple was formally titled onscreen as Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. It was broadcasted on ABC from September 24, 1970, to March 7, 1975, starring Tony Randall as Felix Unger and Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison.In our conversation, Shyer tackled the making of some of his well-known films and the changing writing culture in Hollywood. Even though I should not, I'm going to assume that you know the saying, “Don't assume, because you'll make an ‘ass' out of ‘u' and ‘me'.” That's just the way we are. (Another assumption?) Knowing about asses of all shapes and sizes does not stop us making assumptions about said asses. For example, we make assumptions about tiwhat sort of asses get vaccinated or won't. (Caught you! Because I wrote “asses get vaccinated” first in that sentence, instead of leading with “asses won't get vaccinated”, you assumed I am against being vaccinated. Yes, you did. Admit it.) By the way, some people assume that Oscar Wilde said it first. About not assuming. Sitcom watchers might assume it was Felix Unger in the TV series “The Odd Couple.” There are other names on the list, so we may safely assume that once again Anonymous said it first.

If you had a favorite television show growing up, there’s a pretty good chance Pamelyn Ferdin appeared on it. In addition to several series of her own, Pamelyn made memorable guest appearances on such programs as Star Trek, The Brady Bunch, The Monkees, Bewitched, Gunsmoke, Family Affair, and The Flying Nun. She played Felix Unger’s daughter, Edna, on multiple episodes of The Odd Couple, and is perhaps best known as the voice of Lucy Van Pelt in Peanuts TV specials and the feature film, A Boy Named Charlie Brown. Pamelyn was the busiest child actor in Hollywood for the better part of a decade, performing in more than 200 television episodes, about 30 feature films and made-for-TV movies, and hundreds of television commercials, nearly all of them before she was out of her teens. As an actress, she performed with some of the legends of show business, acting alongside Jack Benny, Walter Brennan, John Cassavetes, Bing Crosby, Clint Eastwood, Gene Kelly, Elsa Lanchester, Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Ray Milland, Maureen O’Sullivan, Geraldine Page, Vincent Price, Tony Randall, Cliff Robertson, and Jonathan Winters; as a singer, she introduced songs by such celebrated songwriters as Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Sammy Cahn and Burton Lane, Rod McKuen, and Richard and Robert Sherman; and as a dancer, she performed on stage and screen with Buddy Ebsen, Jerry Lewis, and Debbie Reynolds. Characters in books and movies and TV shows are magical. They make us laugh and cry and hold our breath as they take us to a vivid elsewhere. Conflicted, exaggerated, accelerated characters live in a world more interesting than our own. And it is a world we like to visit, even if it's only 30 seconds at a time. This is why character-driven ad campaigns are outperforming logic-driven campaigns, hands down. We quickly get tired of sales pitches, but we never get tired of being charmed. The characters we love may change over time, but our love for characters never changes. Best of all, character-driven ad campaigns don't have to be targeted to a specific birth cohort. Their appeal is cross-generational. So if you need to build a bridge to Millennials, put your hammer in the hand of a colorful, memorable, entertaining character.Do you remember the suave, invincible James Bond of the Sean Connery/Roger Moore years? (1962 to 1985 in case you were wondering.) Take that character, sand the British off him, wrap him in Chuck Norris jokes, and you've got The Most Interesting Man in the World. He tripled the sales of Dos Equis in Canada. And while craft beers were driving the sale of other beers down across the US, sales of Dos Equis increased by 34.8%. 1 Put Mayberry's wise, caring, and infinitely patient Andy Griffith in the passenger seat of an air-conditioning service van with an idiot-savant Forrest Gump in the driver's seat and you've got Mr. Jenkins and Bobby, the most successful ad campaign in the history of home service companies. When Mr. Jenkins gave Bobby $100,000 during a 30-second ad that debuted two weeks ago and encouraged him to pursue his dream of becoming a movie star in Hollywood, social media exploded. The next morning it was front page news – above the fold – in the important Charlotte Observer, and a savvy outdoor advertising company asked permission to post “We're Going to Miss You, Bobby” on all their digital billboards for free, and 2 major network TV affiliates treated it as major story in their newscasts, with one of them giving the story about 3 minutes, the other giving it more than 5 minutes. Can you believe this local service company in Charlotte, NC, has accumulated more than 1,000 Google Reviews with a 4.7 star average? This isn't a restaurant, it's a service company! Have you ever heard of such a thing? Only one other home services ad campaign has generated that kind of audience love and effectiveness: the relatively new “Boy with a flashlight” campaign of Goettl Air Conditioning in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Tucson. Sadie, the boy's dog, is also an important part of that campaign. “What do a Forrest Gump idiot-savant and a boy with a flashlight and a dog have to do with air conditioning?” “Nothing. "not long after my marriage" [ENGR]  In this episode, we look at how married life was treating Dr. Watson in "The Adventure of the Boscombe Valley Mystery." William S. Baring-Gould placed this at June 6 or June 8, 1889. It was published as the fourth short story in the collection known as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. In the opening scene, Holmes sends for the recently married Watson to accompany him on a case, and Mary Watson, far from nagging her husband about his penchant for dashing off with his friend, actually urges Watson to go. Watson gives her a charming compliment in return by alluding to their romantic meeting in The Sign of Four. The affectionate circle is completed when Holmes gives Watson very gracious thanks for agreeing to come along on the trip.    What are we to make of Watson's home life? Is he simply using a literary technique by making his marriage seem able to weather the storm of Holmes? She was mainly active both in live action and as a voice actress in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, but has since appeared more sporadically in recent films, concentrating more on animal rights activism than acting.   Ferdin played the Bumsteads' daughter Cookie in the 1968–1969 CBS revival series Blondie. She played Felix Unger's daughter Edna in the 1970s ABC series version of The Odd Couple and Paul Lynde's daughter Sally on the short-lived The Paul Lynde Show.   She appeared on the original Star Trek in 1968 as one of a group of orphaned children led by an alien with sinister motives in the episode "And the Children Shall Lead", and in the 1977 series Space Academy as Laura Gentry.[1]   Ferdin provided the voice of Lucy van Pelt in three Peanuts cartoons: the 1969 TV special It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown, a 1969 feature film A Boy Named Charlie Brown and the 1971 TV special Play It Again, Charlie Brown.   She appeared as Mary Constable in the supernatural thriller Daughter of the Mind and as Abby Clarkson in The Mephisto Waltz (1971). Topic - Women and Clutter.  When it comes to being a “neat nik”, who comes to mind?  Felix Unger, Adrian Monk?  Where are the women on your list?  Obsessive-compulsive disorder occurs about equally in men and women.  In the real world, it's women who are constantly nagging about “flat space-itis” whereby all flat space has something laying on it.  Recent research shows there's a biological basis for this behavior.  Surprise!  Connie's ancient brain tells her to constantly evaluate the environment so she can see any possible threat.  Because Connie isn't as physically strong as a man, she has to use her intelligence to keep herself safe.  The dopamine in her brain helps her to see novel things around her.  Basically, she has to “clean up the clutter” in order to see the sabertooth cat waiting to pounce.  Oh wait, it's not a sabertooth cat, it's a backpack!  Silly me!  There goes my ancient brain again!  Kids, give mom a break.  Clean up your stuff! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message
