It's Thanksgiving here in the US, and you know what that means. Gathering with friends and family, celebrating what we are thankful for and then… the sales. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Cyber week—it's the biggest shopping season of the year.If you're a shopper, no doubt you love a bargain. If you're an ecommerce company, stuck in all to familiar cycle of seasonal discounts, you may have already made a deal with the devil. What if we told you that the data tells us that discounting drives only short-term benefits, and that the long term your business would be stronger if you never offered percentage or dollar discounts?Discounting is tried and true, everyone does it – don't they? But it's tricky - firstly because it trains your audience to wait until you have a discount to buy from you. Worst of all, from a branding perspective, it can damage your brand.Joining Fallon in this episode to help us learn more about the data and help us discover business-boosting alternatives to discounting, is Andrew Forman! Andrew is the answer to the question, what do you get if you cross a Harvard Business School MBA welding investment banker with a mathematics and economics whizz treasurer of a nonprofit. Tess graduated from Penn with a Bachelor's in Applied Science and another Bachelor's from the Wharton School in Global Impact Investing and Operations Management. While at Penn, she founded SOCEANA, a platform to democratize giving and promote corporate volunteerism, which was acquired in 2018. After graduating and being accepted to Harvard's 2+2 program, she worked at Goldman Sachs as an analyst for two years, and then at Vista Equity Partners as a private equity associate. As soon as she arrived at Harvard Business School, she founded Stride Funding, which we're going to learn a lot more about in today's show.  Can you give us an overview of Stride Funding's approach to student financing and how it differs from traditional student loans? [2:20] Absolutely. As you mentioned, I was actually inspired by my own experience as a student when founding Stride. I was part of the 2+2 program at Harvard. I knew I was going to pursue my MBA, and candidly went through the back and forth of the question, “Is it worth it to go back to school?” That sticker price is just so hefty, and I realized a lot of my peers were in the same boat. I was even asking everyone, "If you could solve one thing, what would it be?" and everyone kept saying, "I want to go back to school, but the costs are prohibitive and I have no guarantee around the outcomes."  I became really fascinated with two concepts. One, how do we actually structure products to align incentives and naturally tie into the outcomes that students receive? And secondly, how do we increase access? I found it so backward that despite going to a great school and great program, almost every lender asks for students to have co-signers. In fact, 92% of private loans require a co-signer which really just means being backed up by a wealthy parent or family member who has a clean credit score and can guarantee your loan. To me, that felt like such a backward system because the whole point of going to school is to do better than your family and to create future potential in your growth. I'm happy to walk through the ways that we've addressed this with Stride's products, but that was really where we started. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkoM2kAG-fM Can you describe Stride Funding's three products? [4:08] We have three products on the market and are continuing to grow our product set. They range on the spectrum of product differentiation and then differentiation on access. Each of our products is non-co-signer based. Anytime you come to Stride, you know that you are going to be evaluated based on your future potential, not your historical background. That's a core belief at Stride. With that being said, we have products that are more traditional,

Euvin Naidoo, speaking in his personal capacity Today (29th June 2021), Euvin Naidoo joins Giant Talk for a conversation with guest host Roger Longden. Euvin Naidoo has just been appointed the Distinguished Professor of Practice for Accounting, Risk and Agility at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, based in Phoenix Arizona in the USA. This coincides with the upcoming opening of Thunderbird's new state of the art USD70m plus digital-first campus in downtown Phoenix that focuses on educating global leaders not only in terms of a management curriculum immersed in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, but within a physical and digital environment that aims to prepare participants to be at the forefront of management innovation. Prior to taking on his new role at Thunderbird in July 2021, Prof. Naidoo was a faculty member at the Harvard Business School in the Accounting and Management Unit, where he led the teaching of 2 sections (20%) of the Harvard Business School MBA class for the Financial Reporting and Control program, a core class for all MBA students. Prof. Naidoo's focus is on making complex subjects accessible, exciting and engaging and to do this by basing teaching in both a core foundation of theory but also in practice. In 2021, he received the honour of attaining one of the highest teaching ratings (6.7/7 and 6.8/7), for his innovative teaching approaches with many of his students ranking accounting as one of their all-time favourite subjects. He is one of the leading thinkers in the development and application of agile and OKR principles to enterprise organisations in North America and piloted HBS's first short intensive program on agility called "From agile to OKRs", that aims to serve as a blueprint to leaders of large enterprises to drive the next step change in performance delivery. A financial services veteran from industry, having served on the senior leadership teams of several global financial services groups, Prof. Naidoo focuses on lessons in management drawn from practice. Most recently he has co-written and published a series of cases and powerful articles in the space of agility and innovation, partnering with some of the leading organizations in the world. With McKinsey, he examined how agile organisations outperform others in a crisis. At BCG, he looked at how non-digital incumbent leaders within the Fortune 500 can harness lessons from digital natives to increase the pace of innovation, drawing on their inherent strengths. He has long been a pioneer as both a practitioner, coach and C-Suite executive, including his opening speech at Ted Global more than a decade ago, per the invite of Ted Curator, Chris Anderson. Trendhunter has previously named Prof. Naidoo's talk as one of the top 15 best business keynotes on investing alongside speeches by Warren Buffet, Kevin O' Leary and Bill Ackman who are also on this list. Himself a graduate of the Harvard Business School, he was also selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, where he served 2 terms on the WEF's United States Global Agenda Council. We are delighted to have him take time away from his busy schedule to share some of the latest thinking on agility, OKRs and future of management.

How to leverage an HBS education: The story of LeverEdge [Show Summary] Do you want to save money on your student loans? Interested in earning an MBA with entrepreneurship as your goal? Considering Harvard Business School as the place to earn that degree? Pull up a chair, or at least plug in your ear buds. Learn how two current Harvard Business School MBA students got into HBS and founded a company that can save you money on your student loans. HBS students talk about business school and their exciting new company, LeverEdge [Show Notes] We have two guests today and a lot of ground to cover. So I’m going to give them very brief intros and leave more time for the interview. My guests today are Chris Abkarians and Nikhil Agarwal, both members of the Harvard Business School Class of 2020 and co-founders of LeverEdge, which can help you reduce your student borrowing costs. And that’s true whether you are applying to law, medical, or business schools. Nikhil earned his Bachelors of Science in Aerospace Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012 and worked for Boeing for six years before making the move to Boston in 2018. Chris earned his BA in Political Science and Public Policy from Duke in 2012 and then started his career at L.E.K. Consulting, where he worked for approximately three years before joining Netflix. He then worked for Netflix in Content Strategy & Analysis for another three years. Then he too made the move to Boston to begin his studies at HBS. With that as background, let’s hear about their MBA experience at Harvard, the founding of LeverEdge, and the savings it can provide you. Can you tell us a little about your background? Where you grew up? [2:55] Chris: I was born and raised in Los Angeles in a large family. I am the biggest Lakers fan you could meet. I followed my love of basketball to Duke where there was no chance I could ever play for the team, but whenever I am not working I am always trying to catch a game or play if I have the chance. Nikhil: I grew up and lived in India for my first 18 years. Then I moved to Urbana-Champaign where I was expecting skyscrapers but instead found cornfields. After graduation I went to work at Boeing in product development (and am particularly excited about the 777X coming out next year that I worked on), and then made my way to HBS. What was hardest part for you in the MBA application process? How did you handle that element? [4:43] Nikhil: For me it was wondering if I was even good enough to apply to HBS or the kind of person that could get in. It took a number of discussions with friends telling me that I was living in this bubble where I was surrounded by people like me doing cool things. The reality is there are very few people in the world who get to make airplanes, which gave me some confidence to get the ball rolling. Chris: Figuring out how to weave a narrative that made sense, through all sections of the application. I went to Duke, I worked on political campaigns, then did consulting, then had a media career at Netflix. Sometimes you sit back and realize how difficult it can be to explain why you did what you did, and why the MBA is the next logical step in the process. When you get it, there is a level of personal clarity which is amazing. > What do you like most about Harvard? [7:39] Chris: It’s hard to put a value on the incredible people you are surrounded by on a daily basis. I thought I had that as a consultant and also at a growing media tech company, but here you meet people with backgrounds you didn’t even know existed, and you end up being interested in things you didn’t even know you could be interested in. Hearing the perspectives of others is amazing. One piece of advice is to take advantage of everything you can outside of class to get to know people better. Nikhil: I used to think of myself as very rational,

Have you ever wondered what it's all about?  Or, something (seemingly) substantial happens in your life and the lyrics from the Peggy Lee song, Is That All There Is?, start rumbling through your head?  You're not alone.  Perhaps what is missing is that you're not living and leading from your true purpose.  Well...you are in luck!  This week's guest, Nick Craig, shares his work from his new book, Leading From Purpose, and it completely changed the way I think about the topic.   We talk about how to get past looking at purpose as a strategy or a cause and how to truly live the life you were supposed to live. Get a pad of paper, pencil and get ready to change your life!  Enjoy! More on Nick... Nick Craig is the author of the newly published book, Leading From Purpose, and President of the Core Leadership Institute, a global consulting firm committed to waking up those who will wake up the many by inspiring them to discover their purpose and equipping them to lead authentically. Mid-way through his 25-year leadership consulting and coaching career, Nick recognized that what senior leaders needed most was to access their deeper wisdom in challenging times. The realization refocused his approach to helping them unlock this access, resulting in the Core Leadership Institute’s ability to integrate the work of purpose with authentic leadership in realizing sustainable business results.  In 2007, Nick began collaborating with professor Bill George at Harvard Business School; this led them to co-authoring, Finding Your True North: A Personal Guide, which became the course book for the Harvard Business School MBA class Authentic Leadership Development (ALD). Nick is also the co-author with Scott Snook of the 2014 Harvard Business Review article From Purpose to Impact and The Discover Your True North Fieldbook. Through Nick’s expertise in leadership purpose, he has worked in partnership with organizations ranging from Ben & Jerry’s, Heineken, ING Bank, LEGO® and Unilever to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Harvard Business School case study, “Unilever’s Paul Polman: Developing Global Leaders” features Nick’s work with Unilever. His thought leadership as a Wharton Fellow is documented in Wharton@Work. You can learn more about Nick and the Core Leadership Institute’s work at coreleader.com
