Rob Birch talks about how their work changed with the onset of the 'Sample Wars', being Mercury Music Prize nominated alongside Suede and New Order and what happened after this album was released, why did it take the band a decade to release another record. Tune into this week's episode hosted by Austrian DJ and producer MEGABLAST. SASCHA WEISZ, aka Megablast, has been making musical waves for some time now with his unique, eclectic take on contemporary electronic music, a very personal, genre-crossing interpretation of house, afro, Latin, dub, trippy techno, and world beats. His range and ability to enchant the dance floors with percussionists and vocalists make him one of the most impressive and distinct artists in the industry. Since his early career in Vienna, where he gained international attention 2006 with the album “Kunuaka” by Makossa & Megablast on Kruder & Dorfmeister's G-Stone label and more recently from his new home base in the north of Ibiza, he has played at some of the most iconic events and venues all over the world, such as Scorpios Mykonos, Caprices Festival Crans-Montana, Ushuaia, Pablo Fierro's “We're Here” at Chinois (formerly Heart), Lio, Blue Marlin, Akasha, Cova Santa Ibiza, Soho Garden Dubai, Vagalume Tulum, Annabel's London amongst many others. With his releases on labels like Sol Selctas, Flying Circus, Madorasindahouse, International Deejay Gigolos, !K7 and his very own Luvlite Recordings as well as having his tracks remixed by influential producers like DJ Koze, Acid Pauli, Lucia- no, Booka Shade, Jenia Tarsol, Chaim, SadoV (Red Axes), Stereo MCs and Henrik Schwarz, he clearly demonstrates his musical repertoire and unlimited love for different genres. “As an artist and music producer, it's important for me to keep the freedom from any genres and not let others put me in a specific category,” he says. “Be yourself, don't try to be someone else, and be okay with failing sometimes—these experiences make you who you are today. Focus on quality over quantity and don't believe the hype.” Enjoy this Eclectic Journey with MEGABLAST on Redolent! 01. Makossa & Megablast - Like A Rocket (2005) 02. Today, we're diving into the infectious world of Stereo MCs and their iconic track, "Connected." Even if you think you don't know it, chances are you've crossed paths with this chart-topping British group's masterpiece, thanks to a cleverly placed sample and irresistible vocal melody that propelled them onto the US charts. These musical innovators also made waves by producing remixes for some of the biggest artists of their time. Despite their rise to fame in the early 90s, it took them over a decade to follow up their hit album, and they never quite replicated that mainstream success. Patreon wanted us to explore the Stereo MCs journey, so stay tuned as we uncover whether we truly connected with this group or if the writing was on the wall since the song's release. New series… For a long time, I've wanted to give flowers to some of the great pop tapes and CDs I grew up with. EMF vs. The Farm vs. Stereo MCs, let's GO! Welcome to 1993. Autumn, to be exact. And how was it all looking?Well, it wasn't really baggy like 1990, or rave-y like 1991, but it wasn't Britpoppy like 1995. It was all a bit…well, who knows? Can we say, a bit of a pop hinterland? And were there any clues across our ever reliant pop culture landscape for how ‘93 had shaped up? Well in a year that saw the launch of two modern icons - the Vauxhall Corsa and QVC - actually, perhaps, we'll come back to them later. Not!Back to the hinterland then. We had the ever reliant and still relatively imperial Neil and Chris, resplendent in their dayglo uniforms marching to the Village People in Moscow. Or perhaps your CD single (with 6 extra dance mixes) was celebrating the glorious invasion of Europop of Culture Beat, 2 Unlimited and Haddaway. Or maybe you were, frankly too cool for school and had bunked off to the shimmering r'n'b from SWV, Janet and Eternal. And where was Indie? What even was indie in 1993?One thing is for certain, your musical tribe in 1993 was considerably, undeniably, very untribal. But isn't waiting for the Next Big Thing - and spotting the red herrings along the way - so terribly exciting? So if it's autumn ‘93, it's definitely time for NOW That's What I Call Music 26! And joining us for this excursion back 30 (!) years, none other than author and chief rock & pop critic for The Times Will Hodgkinson. Will selects his highlights from the wonderfully packaged 40 Top Chart Hits as well exploring the wider pop culture landscape of 1993. Along the way, we discover Will's inspiration for his, quite frankly wonderful exploration of 1970's pop ‘In Perfect Harmony' and how 1973 and 1993 really had a lot more in common than you may think. We also take excursions into some of 1993's other memorable musical moments, courtesy of Bjork, London's eclectic club scene and (unashamedly) Bowie's Buddha of Suburbia (with a real cameo from Will, no less!)Expect starring (and a few understudy) roles from Meat Loaf, The Shamen, Lawrence from Denim, Stakka Bo (only a bit Stereo MCs), Crustys, Frank Farian, Hacky sacks(!) and some illicit colour photocopying - you will be shocked! All of this and much, much more! And find out why the Spin Doctors (amongst a few others) will not be returning our calls. Released in 1992, Connected went on to become a big hit internationally, especially the United States. It continues to live on nearly 30 years later, featuring in ads and most recently in the latest Netflix trending show 'The Last Dance', the tune plays over a montage of Michael Jordan scoring a rake of points against the New York Nicks. Connected was written in a basement studio in Brixton and it’s about people being connected, not being ‘blind’ to racial conflict. The walking talking musical encyclopedia that is Joe Donnelly joined Mario for Mario's Sunday Roast to walk us through the full Story Behind The Song 'Connected.' Ladies and Gentlemen so excited to step things up with Keith Cooper on the Podcast. Keith managed the Brit Award winning Finley Quaye when the multi platinum selling album 'Maverick A Strike' was released which had multiple hit singles on it including 'Sunday Shining' and 'Even After All'. He also managed Cut Chemist from Jurassic 5, legendary Drum n Bass Producer Aphrodite which meant bringing us the era defining 'Aphrodite' album, as well as Ian Brown of the Stone Roses. Furthermore, he managed the Multi Platinum selling Stereo MCs for over 13 years seeing them through record breaking sales and 2 Brit Awards, and huge tours. Then on top of that he also managed PM Dawn again Multi Platinum sales and Brit Awards. Then also for management there was also the Jungle Brothers, Just Jack, Scribz Riley, Aaradhna & Joe Fox. Truth & Soul are currently a producer duo who he is excited to be managing who have co written tracks for Adele on her multi platinum selling album, and is also responsible for Aloe Blacc & music supervision & production on Red Dead Redemption. If this was not enough he also ran a publishing company that held/hold the worldwide rights for publishing of material by Finlay Quaye, Jurassic 5, Aphrodite, Ian Brown, Just Jack, Truth & Soul and Adele. On top of this Keith is now a qualified Psychotherapist, having completed an MA in Psychotherapy, he has a private practice as well as continuing management and publishing in music. This was a gripping conversation where we really went under the hood and spoke about human behaviour in the music industry. I also ended up exposing some of my recent behaviour and ended up having some counselling from Keith and we deconstruct where those behaviours were coming from. I think this conversation is a gift to any aspiring musician, pro musician or aspiring or music industry pro. Remember if you like the podcast please leave a review and share it to a close friend who you know will like it. These kind of conversations are a gift to get an insider view from experienced people who have made mistakes and suffered, so that you can avoid those stresses and strains. Also to help you if you are feeling the struggle. Please SHARE to a friend and help the conversation go to the people that need to hear this!

Who needs fluent English when you've got dope Scandinavian beats? Mark and Sarah succumb to the joy of Ace of Base's "The Sign," meaning they write their own vaguely grammatical lyrics, have specific memories about nerding out to this music in a friend's pickup truck, and figure out the exact number of times you can hear this track before it drives you crazy. This week on the occasionally-weekly tech podcast from The Final Straw, Error451, Bursts and guest William Budington, a tech security expert, talk about Net Neutrality. The context is that it's back in the news as FCC Chairman Ajit Pai appears to be pushing for the revocation of the 2015 FCC decision to declare the Internet a Title II public utility in U.S. law. The upside of this is that access to un-inhindered Internet is then supposedly enshrined in the law as a public good. The current make up of the court includes 3 Republicans (including Pai) and 2 Democrats, so if a vote happens in mid-December along party lines, the Title II status may be revoked, possibly allowing for tiered access, which would possibly allow internet service providers and comms giants who are the gatekeepers to the web to throttle access to lower-paying services or outright deny access to certain sites and services. We chat about how Tiered Access looks in countries like Portugal, the very curious padding of at least 1.1 million online submissions to the FCC's Open Comment period misrepresenting U.S. voters perspectives on Net Neutrality and the FCC's apparent disinterest in investigating the stunt. William suggests that one action listeners can take immediately, which sadly is far from a direct action is to lobby congresspeople to block the move by Chairman Pai and protect the Internet as it is. He suggests visiting BattleForTheNet.Com and petitioning the powers that be via their suggestions. As far as a wider lense of what we might do to increase autonomy and integrity in our information technologies, William suggests listeners check out and start playing with Mesh Networking technologies. Mentioned in the episode are People's Open in Oakland, CA, USA & Friefunk in Germany. track heard: Connected by Stereo MCs from their album, Connected

The HVW8 Podcast was about 4+ years worth of simply incredible producers, djs, artists and musicians sharing what they do. We helped form The Hawthorne Headhunters, gave Dam Funk some of his first mix releases (and later paired him with Taz Arnold and Thundercat live) and featured DJ Haircut pre-Mayer Hawthorne craziness playing the pre-release of It Ain't Gonna Work Out. Aloe Blacc, Daz-I-Cue, The Twilite Tone, Kutmah, Computer Jay, House Shoes and many, many, many more came through. Ty G and I would open and close with short sets. This mix from about the third year was my only chance to post a full set on my own. I think I held my own... It's actually one of my favorites. Greedy Bitches x Stereo MCs! Haha!

Machines (LP Edit) - Red Flag Notes and other random things: Somebody slap me if I try to take several years off from podcasting ever again. I had to pretty much relearn everything I had known about my cheap mixer and recording software from scratch. Not only that, new updates to software means new interfaces and having to learn where all the navigation features are all over again. You may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but at least he can relearn old tricks since forgotten. Anyway, on to the music. Starting everything off is sort of a forgotten gem by John Joseph Wardle, also known as the inimitable Jah Wobble. The track peaked at #10 on the US Modern Rock charts back in 1992. Featuring the unmistakable backing vocals of a young Sinead O' Connor, the song was a staple on college radio back in the day. But it almost never happened. Following his stint as the original bassist for Public Image Ltd., Wobble formed Invaders of the Heart in 1983, but sometime in the mid-80s became disillusioned with the commercialism prevalent in the music industry. That and his penchant for drunken brawls let to a hiatus from music. Thankfully, a friend and former bandmate convinced him to return. A live recording he made led to a new contract with a small European label, which propelled him to further success with subsequent Invaders albums. Since the early 90s, Wobble's world music leanings and unique dub-style bass playing has shown up in numerous collaborations with a wide range of musicians of all musical backgrounds. Talk Talk hasn't appeared a lot in CRC, but that's mainly due to the freeform nature of their later music and their lack of "hits" if you will. That's not at all a slam on the group or their style. In my honest opinion they were one of the more original groups coming out of the 80s. And that's not to say they didn't have their share of chart success, but like some other well-respected bands, as their popularity ebbs, their critical acclaim skyrockets. Mixed by producer extraordinaire Tim Friese-Greene, who co-produced Thomas Dolby's "Golden Age Of Wireless" album and has done work with another of my favorite bands, Catherine Wheel, this Extended Mix appeared in February of 1986. According to the band, there was also another 12" mix of this track, by Dennis Weinrich, that was omitted from the "Asides Besides" compilation where this track was taken to "stop the listener from being driven crazy". Seems like I'm going to have to find that one now ... Although the original version of "Birthday" by The Sugarcubes is one of my favorite Sugarcubes tunes, and although I got to see them live back in 1989 opening for Public Image Ltd. and New Order, and although Bjork has attained a level of success whereby she needs only one name, I think the more interesting persona involved with the remix is Justin Robertson. It's unprecedented for me to write about remixers in CRC, but to any music lover at the turn of the 90s Justin's name has probably surfaced many, many times in record collections everywhere. Turned on to music by the burgeoning acid house scene while a student in Manchester, Robertson quickly jumped headlong into the club scene, taking the record store to DJ to club owner route. Erasure, Bjork, Happy Mondays, New Order, Talk Talk, Stereo MCs and Gary Clail are just a few of the more recognizable names Justin has worked with. You may have noticed that four of those artists/bands are featured in this podcast. Coincidence? Well, yes, it was just coincidence. To read more about Justin Robertson's odyssey, you can check him out at http://thedeadstock33s-justinrobertson.com/ Four albums and twelve singles. That's the total output of Renegade Soundwave's eight-year run as dance/east-end hip-hop/dub/sampling/electro-industrialist noise-makers. The song here, Transition, is from their "In Dub" album, which was a quick follow-up to the success of their first long-play album, "Soundclash". Released in 1989, "Soundclash" followed up several popular singles: "The Kray Twins", "Biting My Nails", and "Probably A Robbery", which charted at #38 in the UK during the year 1990. "Probably A Robbery", though gained chart legs mostly due to the b-side, "Ozone Breakdown", a favorite in dance clubs somewhat due to the prominent sample from the cult film, "The Warriors". RSW have been cited by The Chemical Brothers as a major influence. Red Flag, in my opinion as far as electronic dance music goes, was very under-appreciated. Buried beneath their hearty dance beats are beautiful pop songs with lush melodies and harmonies and catchy hooks, at least that was the case with their earlier material, including the track here, "Machines". Originally called Shades Of May, the band was conceived in 1982 and consisted of brothers Mark and Chris Reynolds. Both classically trained musicians, by 1984 the two took seriously to studying music and computer technology. A 1988 gig for a Southern California record pool got them noticed by producer Jon St. James. Shortly thereafter, their first single "Broken Heart" (an amazing song, no less) made its debut. Stacey Q, of "Two Of Hearts" fame, co-produced the single with St. James. Their album "Naive Art", a fantastic album from start to finish that included dance hits such as "Russian Radio" and "If I Ever", appeared in 1989. If timing is everything, the brothers' was impeccable as "Naive Art" hit the streets just as Depeche Mode were riding high at what was perhaps the peak of their songwriting prowess. As such, Red Flag's sound struck a chord, literally and figuratively with the synthpop crowds who, ahem, just couldn't get enough of DM at the time. Regulars to CRC will notice a rather robust selection of Razormaid! remixes throughout these podcasts and "Naive Art" remains the only album Joseph Watt and Co. from Razormaid! ever produced in its entirety. Paul Robb of Information Society also helped with the production. Red Flag were victims of label doldrums twice: the first was the dissolution of Enigma Records in 1991, which led to their signing to IRS, the label on which "Machines" appeared. The second was the following year when they were dropped from IRS, an event which, considering the label's impending financial troubles, may have been rather fortuitous. The brothers also had the foresight to use their advance to build their own studio, which would be home of their own label, Plan B Records. It would be the imprint of all future releases. While the band is still actively recording, Mark Reynolds sadly committed suicide in 2003. May he rest in peace and may his music live on forever.

Panda presents Matta. Matta are a pair of DJ/Producers, Andy Brookes & James Wilson, who specialise in the darker, twisted end of Dubstep. Matta came together in 2009 when they met at Music College and have being going from strength to strength since then. 2011 was a particularly big year for them with huge gigs at the Secret Garden Party festival and all across Europe including France, Holland, Russia and even Lebanon. These DJing achievements are matched by those in the production arena with a pile of hit releases including ‘Release the Freq' which has so far had over 1.25 million plays on Youtube and Vimeo. Making waves in a genre that is already making waves, in 2011 Proper Villains is poised to help redefine dubstep. As we see it break away from its underground roots, becoming more mainstream, Proper Villains is one of the standout artists of this year, unabashedly mixing pop sounds and dirty bass into dance floor- friendly mayhem. While critics try to split this genre of music & sub-categorize it, Proper Villains borrows from his extensive background in electro, house, drum and bass, hip-hop, and uk garage to bridge the gaps in between. Jokingly describing his production style as "bass-ey awesomeness," he skillfully crafts dance floor bangers like his recent remix of "Bass Down Low" by the Cataracs ft. Dev (Universal). A prolific remixer, his remixography includes such artists as Stereo MCs, The Cataracs, Kidz in the Hall, DJ Ayers, Theophilus London, Cubic Zirconia, Dirty Disco Youth and Ninjasonik. In collaboration with Jess Jubilee, he remixed Roxy Cottontail’s “Double Dare,” which was featured on the MTV show “My Life as Liz.” Whether DJ'ing to a packed house, or producing a club hit, Proper Villains' talent for throwing in the unexpected gives his mixes that "Holy @#$%, did he really just do that" quality that keeps him in high demand. He just knows what makes you dance. Simon Shackleton's Elite Force project began way back in 1996, debuting on his own newly founded Fused and Bruised label with a series of peerless 12s and remixes. After a successful five years, he put Fused and Bruised on the backburner to concentrate on production work, and following several years with Whole9Yards and Moonshine he became a mainstay recording artist for AdriftRecordings (formally known as Kingsize Records) before moving on to set up hisown hugely successful U&A imprint. Often credited for being a lynchpin in the developing the tech-funk genre (an amalgamation of breaks, house, techno and electro) he has released a series of highly successful singles in the past few years, finding broad support from DJs and musicians across the board, including the likes of James Zabiela, Sasha, Crystal Method, Laurent Garnier and Fatboy Slim to name but five. In 2008 released a semi-retrospective double album's worth of remixes and re-workings of a 12-year back catalogue, with over 25 mixes coming from such luminaries as Miles Dyson, Rogue Element, Deepgroove, Dylan Rhymes & Calvertron. In addition to these solo singles, Meat Katie has been a regular collaborator with Elite Force, a relationship that had begun in 2003 with the massive-selling 'Toba', and that will see their creative relationship come to fruition in 2009 with the launch of their new joint project under the name ‘Dustbowl', as well as a series of singles under the ‘Meat Katie & Elite Force' banner. As a remixer, Elite Force has always been in huge demand, with re-workings for the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Crystal Method, Jungle Brothers, Stereo MCs, UNKLE, Infusion, Rennie Pilgrem, Shiloh and Dylan Rhymes all contributing to his reputation as one of the most creative and effective remixers around. Elite Force's music has also been the soundtrack to many a movie, with a huge list of impressive A-list credits to his name, including the likes of the Matrix, Charlie's Angels, Arlington Road, Mortal Kombat, Crow, The Bone Collector, The Jackyll, Spiderman 2 and his music has appeared on a wide array of TV shows, from CSI to Top Gear, from Football Focus to LA Doctors. He's also soundtracked a number of computer games, including no fewer than 5 FIFA games, several of the Wipeout series, The Matrix and Motorstorm 1, and he is currently writing some bespoke music for forthcoming games for Ferrari and Motorstorm2. On the decks, Elite Force has been a prime mover since 1990 when he cut his teeth playing huge student nights and self-promoted acid house nights in the South West of England, before moving up to ....London.... and ultimately gravitating towards his tech-funk style, with which he now has a full diary of global bookings. He has become known as one of the top technicians on a circuit that has included massive shows in Belarus, Hungary, Australia, Italy, USA, Czech Republic, India, Turkey, Spain, Japan, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and China, amongst others, as well as numerous festival slots including Glastonbury, Coachella, Bloom, Wickerman, the Glade and more recently Burning Man. He was also responsible for the hugely influential Strongarm Sessions webcasts which became something of an institution since their inception back in 2001, receiving as they did around 20,000 downloads per show, but now put on the backburner to concentrate on other projects, such as his own blog (Techfunkmanifesto) and his other musical projects, such as Dustbowl (with Meat Katie).
