This week, the London Hippy is fuelled by his excitement for an upcoming trip to Brazil and has been listening to the sounds of Boogaloo and Latin Rock. Playing icons like Tim Maia and Joe Bataan are always fun but we dive deeper into the latin sound by exploring rock from Mexico, Peru and Chile in 60s. The second half of the show maintains psychedelic sonics from a contemporary angle by shining a kaleidoscopic view on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder Label. This is the music born of the love affair of the electric guitar blues and the Afro Cuban Rhythms played with the Congas adding sex, dance and excitement to Rock music. In the early sixties the Mission district (San Francisco), where a young Mexican teenager and future rock star, Carlos Santana, grew up, kids gathered in the park to play music. It came naturally to play the new music of rock & roll with the conga players who added the Afro Cuban beat. At home his parents' music of Cuban rhumba, mariachis and rancheras was integrated with the music he listened to on their radio favourites programmes of Blues, Rock & Roll, Motown & Stax music and the Rock music coming from England with the Beatles, Kinks, Stones and later on with Jimi Hendrix, Sly & the Family Stone and the San Francisco own home-grown psychedelic music scene of Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Put them all together, mix them well in the perfect doses and new music is born. One of the first hybrids of Rock was called Latin Rock. In the uptown of NY, Latin music had already been mixed with Soul music and Rock & Roll in the creation of the Boogaloo. The new Latin Rock was a more bluesy version of Latin music and also more guitar leaning than the Boogaloo, which is more close to the Soul music. Soon the Boogaloo and Latin Rock became a music mixing all their elements as more complex percussion units were mixed with Rock guitar and Soul. When you hear Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones or watch Soul Sacrifice by Santana at the Woodstock festival you know this more percussive music is exciting and made for dance. It is when Rock recovers its Roll as Joe Big Turner would sing 'Shake, rattle and roll.' The playlist of this show includes influential music that preceded this genre and some of the most vibrant Latin Rock pieces. Latin Rock was an important musical genre to invigorate the status and cultural heritage of the Spanish-speaker communities in the US (Mexican, Puerto Ricans, Cubans or Dominicans) Music. 1- Louie Louie - RICHARD BERRY & THE PHAROAHS (intro) (1957) (US) 2- Loco Cha Cha Cha - RENE TOUZET (1956) (CUBA) 3- Farmer John - THE PREMIERS (1964) (US) 4- 96 Tears - QUESTION MARK & THE MYSTERIANS (1966) (US) 5- Candombe - LOS SHAKERS (1968) (URUGUAY) 6- Chicano Power - THEE MIDNITERS (1967) (US) 7- Soul Sacrifice - SANTANA (live at Woodstock August, 16th, 1969) (US) 8- Meshkalina - TRAFFIC SOUND (1969) (PERU) 9- Viva Tirado - EL CHICANO (1970) (US) 10- Spill the Wine - ERIC BURDON & THE WAR (1970) (UK/US) 11- Oye Como Va - SANTANA (1970) (US) 12- Guajira Sicodélica - FLASH & THE DYNAMICS (1971) (US) 13 - El viajecito - BLACK SUGAR (1971) (PERU) 14- Heavy Duty - THE HARVEY AVERNE BARRIO BAND (1971) (US) 15- Más Zacate - AZTECA (1972) (US) 16- Oye Mama - MALO (1972) featuring Jorge Santana (brother of Carlos) (US) 17- Got this Happy Feeling - GUETTO BROTHERS (1972) (US) 18- Bailando Despacio - KATUNGA (1973) (ARGENTINA) 19- Sapo's Montuno - SAPO (1974) (US) 20- Mira pa' ca - CHANGO (1975) (US) 21- Guarafeo - JOSE “CHEPITO” AREAS (1974) (NICARAGUA/US) 22- El Narco - BROWNOUT (2007) (US) 23- La Bamba - LILA DOWNS (2004) (US)

** visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more **“When you think of Motown, you think of Detroit,” explains timbale player RICHARD SEGOVIA, celebrating his 42nd year with his band PURO BANDIDO. “When you think of LATIN ROCK, it’s right there in the MISSION”—the Mission District that is, the legendary San Francisco neighborhood where the genre was born. And a very young Segovia—now affectionately known to the community as the “Mayor of the Mission”—was right there to see the birth of this new sound. According to Richard, it all started with the Aliens, a five-piece formed at Mission High School in 1964 by Nicaraguan and El Salvadorian immigrants inspired by Ritchie Valens and the neighboring Haight Ashbury scene. “They were the first kinda Latin Rock band,” Segovia explains. One night, CARLOS SANTANA, then a promising young guitarist playing in a blues band, went to see the Aliens at a club called the Night Life. Santana was inspired—it occurred to him that he needed lots of percussion to give his music that special fire. That’s where his fellow future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer JOSE “CHEPITO” AREAS came in. “It was Chepito who brought percussion into Santana,” Segovia asserts. “Chepito brought the conga, the timbale, and added that to blues—changed the whole thing… Everybody wanted to play music after that.”Suddenly the hood’s troubled youth—with the crime and violence always inevitable where there is lack of money and opportunity—found a new direction. “We went from the battle of the barrios to the battle of the bands,” confirms Segovia. For his part, he joined his first band, Dungeon Sounds, on timbales because the drummer and conga positions had already been taken. They played everywhere they could, doing songs by Santana, Malo, and Azteca. “That was our top 40,” he says. The band broke up after a couple years, but Richard kept going, joining Por Vida and then Mbuhai, the latter band challenging his musical abilities considerably. “These guys were way over my head,” he confirms. “The conga player didn’t want to play with me because I didn’t know shit!” They practiced five days a week and, as always, it was sink or swim. “Nobody gave up any information back then,” he explains. “Either you had it, or you didn’t… Nobody’s gonna teach you. You got to learn it on your own… If you didn’t get it right away—‘Next!’”Meanwhile, the Latin Rock scene wasn’t off on an island of its own. Everybody was paying attention and needed some for themselves, even super funk blasters like Larry Graham, who offered Mbuhai an opening slot with Graham Central Station in Redwood City. As it turned out, Clive Davis and many other record execs were in the crowd that night. The next day, Brent Dangerfield, who’d produced Santana, offered to produce Mbuhai for CBS Records. If that weren’t enough, a gig opening for Graham Central Station at the Soul Train club on Broadway led to Don Cornelius asking Mbuhai to be his house band. Next thing they knew, they were supporting acts like Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, the Bar Kays, and Eddie Kendricks. Unfortunately, the Mbuhai album was recorded yet shelved due to circumstances outside the band’s control. But all of this experience had taught Richard how to be a leader himself. So from 1979 to today, he has presided over his badass band PURO BANDIDO—with guitarist Johnny Gunn as his “co-jefe” since ’85. But music is just a portion of what Segovia brings to Latin Rock culture. He is also a major producer and promoter of its artistic aesthetic, a drive that culminates into his crowning achievement: turning his own home into an SF landmark. A few years ago, he was approached by the Precita Eyes Muralists Association, a local nonprofit that does all the murals in the Mission. Under a grant from the California Arts Commission and through the Urban Youth Arts Program, Segovia was asked if he wanted to have his house—the same one on the corner of York & 25th that his parents had bought in the early 60s—to be covered with a mural. He could choose the theme, anything he wanted. Chewing on this opportunity, Segovia went to visit his buddy, Ishmael Versoza aka “Irish,” keyboardist and original member of the Fabulous Malibus, who later became Malo. Richard saw that Irish had some cool old band pictures on the wall. The conclusion was obvious. “I’ve been a Latin Rock player for 52 years,” says Richard, recalling his thought process. “Why don’t I dedicate the mural to Carlos Santana for bringing Latin Rock music to the Mission District?” Soon, artists from age 5 to 45 were covering his house, dubbed CASA BANDIDO, with wonderful paintings of almost 100 Latin Rock Legends, including Carlos’ late brother Jorge Santana, great friend to Segovia and co-creator of the Mission anthem, Malo’s “Suavecito.” As Richard explains, “I decided to preserve what we have left—because all the techies are coming into the neighborhood buying up all our stuff and I wanted the neighborhood to know I aint’ goin nowhere, man. I’m sticking here. I’m gonna die here.”Finally, Segovia is a true community leader, a man who knows how to organize with boundless energy when it comes to working with kids, teaching them how to be safe and play a little music. He has received numerous honors and countless thank-you letters over the years from citizens and politicians alike. In fact, before he passed, SF Mayor Ed Lee announced that September 17th is Richard Segovia Day. On October 16, 2021, Richard will hold a free concert at La Raza Park, where he will pay tribute to the too many greats who have left us recently, including Jorge Santana, Armando Parraza, Malo singer Arcelio Garcia, Raul Rico, and Rudy Salas. And before the show, he will unveil additions to his mural, including Pete, Sheila E., and the rest of the Escovedo family. In this energetic, educational, and laughter-filled interview, the Mayor discusses the African roots of the clave, why he loved Bill Graham, and playing for Eddie Money from ‘85 until his passing. Richard also talks about how his uncle Michael V. Rios designed the cover for Santana’s Grammy-winning Supernatural album at Casa Bandido, what it’s like hanging out with Al Hendrix, father to Jimi, and what the lyrics to “La Cucaracha” are really about. If all of that weren’t enough, Jay and Ace had so much fun with Richard that, less than two weeks after this interview was recorded, they performed with him alongside members of Puro Bandido, and Irish (!) from Malo at an event at the house.Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanCohosted & Coproduced by Jay Stone Website & Art by 3chardsIn-studio Photos and by Debbie JueEngineered by Dominic Brown at Soul Graffiti Studios in Oakland, CA with thanks to & Justin Ancheta, Andrew, & Alex Scammon…but we couldn’t have done it without Scott Sheppard

VIPop #39 We remember very well the moment when we first heard Brian Lopez's music and the feeling of astonishment as well as of obviousness that seized us then ... Because the greatness of this music is to succeed, from very diverse musical influences, in creating a universe as rich as coherent, where Brian Lopez's voice can reign supreme, as overwhelming on an intimate ballad as it's bewitching between two psychedelic riffs of Xixa, his current project with Gabriel Sullivan ... Boarding for Tucson, Arizona, to listen to a man as passionate as his music, to be discovered here between whispers and punchlines ... Enjoy ! Enjoy !       Support us!

#018 - When Bertrand met Leo over 20 years ago, he had no idea that this unassuming handyman was dealing with a crippling back condition and a debilitating drug addiction. Nor could he imagine Leo's backstory a former Latin rock star and the percussionist for the group Malo at the age of 18, Leo was being whisked away via limo and private jet to famous venues like Carnegie hall, American Bandstands, Rolling on the River, and much more. Leo's life is so fascinating that it was even documented in an ESPN Deportes feature. From the highest of highs to being so broken, he could barely function. It got so bad. His family staged an intervention and forced Leo into rehab. But it was here and shortly after at Skyline College, where Leo began to rekindle his passion for running. A passion. He almost completely threw away due to his addiction. But was now ready to embrace. Leo and his wife, Virginia joined the Dolphins South End Running Club. And today have logged over 17,000 miles, attended hundreds of races, become Brazen Streakers, qualified for Boston and have been sober for over 16 years. But most importantly, Leo and Virginia have now become pillars of the running community. Spreading their love and positive message to everyone they meet, especially those who are struggling with addiction. And they've even become running coaches, inspiring the next generation of runners. Best of all, Leo never lost his passion for music and is performing with his new band Momo Tombo, and they are killing it. You're going to love this story from the heartache, the perseverance and the triumphs. So here we go.

Holy Golden is the multifaceted musical world of Leslie Schott and Andrew Valenti. who met during a lunar eclipse on Martha's Vineyard and soon began crafting mythological mini-worlds into home-recorded albums, music videos, short films, and photo stories.  Holy Golden's music blends euphoric dream-pop with lo-fi garage rock to create songs that feel both vulnerable and mysterious.  They have released two full-length albums, several music videos, and a new EP, toured throughout the US twice and will release a new album, Otherworld, recorded from a historic ballroom in Newport, Rhode Island, will be released February 2 along with the single from the album,  "Arrival" . Money Chicha is an Austin, Texas based group featuring members of the Grammy-award winning Latin orchestra Grupo Fantasma and its offshoot funk outfit Brownout. They play a fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched and percussion-heavy music inspired by the sounds of Peru and Colombia in the 60’s and 70’s, sometimes called “Chicha” music, known for Latin beats, psychedelic surf guitar pyrotechnics and melodies influenced by the indigenous culture of the Andes mountains. Money Chicha is a modern translation of this South American musical style by highly skilled veteran artists.  Money Chicha’s debut album Echo en Mexico was released in July 2016 on Vampisoul/Munster records, and they have been featured in numerous compilations and tours.

Born in the streets of Los Angeles, Las Cafeteras are children of immigrants who are remixing roots music and telling modern day stories with eclectic instruments, including jarana’s, requinto, a donkey jawbone, a West African bass instrument called the Marimbol, cajón, and a wooden platform called the Tarima used to dance Zapateado. Las Cafeteras formed as a band in 2008  to document the histories of their neighborhoods through music. They started as students of the Eastside Café, a Zapatista inspired community space in East Los Angeles where they were influenced by the culture, storytelling, and poetic music of Son Jarocho, a traditional music from Veracruz, Mexico. To honor women and challenge masculine language, they feminized their group name by calling themselves, Las Cafeteras, rather than Los Cafeteros. They have recently returned from a sold out national tour and will be playing Friday night at California State University in Northridge. The daughter of musicians, Kesenia Valenti was born and raised in the port of Khodka, Russia – literally the last stop on the Trans-Siberian Railroad.  The isolation didn’t stop her.  She began studying classical piano at 6, was a finalist on the national Russian television program ‘Sing if you Can” and found a way to move to Los Angeles to study acting and continue her musical career. She began working with producer Mario Marchetti and songwriter Gino Barletta to craft high energy, rhythmic pop songs based on her life.  At the same time she began studying comedy, producing comedy videos and acting.  Now a triple threat, she has just released her first single, with more on the way.

The band immediately began writing as a trio and were eager to finally introduce their music to an audience. In May of 2014, the trio took their new material into the studio and recorded their debut 3-song EP entitled “Welcome to Babylon”. The EP begins with the compelling lead single “Karma”, which contrasts against the melancholy nature of “Arrived”. The release then culminates in the final track, “The Great Pretend”, which makes a brief yet strong first statement on an impressive debut. The EP was produced by Andres Torres, which is a new up and coming producer which primarily has worked with some notable acts in the Latin Rock genre. The DOB project marked his first foray working with an American Rock band. Mastering of the EP was handled by GRAMMY nominated mastering engineer Joe LaPorta who is best known for his work with the Foo Fighters, Killers, Imagine Dragons and Vampire Weekend at Sterling Sound in NYC making this a world class project in every sense of the word. Soon after the recording was done the members agreed that the time had come to add a drummer to the mix. After working with several drummers and holding numerous auditions the band introduced their latest member to the fold Chris Toeller. We have a new show called WA Sessions. In Rock the Nation: Latin/o Identites and the Latin Rock Diaspora (Continuum, 2010), Roberto Avant-Mier challenges the traditional historical notion of rock and roll and rock being the result of the converging of white and African-American musics only. Instead, he argues, the history of rock is replete with Latin/o culture. Avant-Mier traces the Latin influence in rock back as far as any history of the rock will. Included in his story are the Mexico-based border radio stations listened to by many early blues, country and rock and roll artists, the zoot-suited pachuco culture popular among Latino/as in the 1940s and 1950s, the Latin/o influence on the classic garage rock of the 1960s, the birth of Mexican rock and its relation to Onda literature in the 1970s and eighties, the dearth of Latino/as in the global punk rock movement of the nineties and, finally, a discussion of Latin/o rock in the twenty-first century. Infused within Avant-Mier’s argument is the notion that Latin/o rock is much more than the participation of Mexican-Americans in American rock. It is a cultural movement that spans all of North and South American, calling into question traditional ideas about political and cultural borders. A serious understanding of rock en espanol or rock nacional forces a serious understanding of Latin/o cultures across borders. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
