When people in the West were faced with the atrocities of World War II, the culture's prevailing optimistic views of human nature were devastated. Two questions kept coming up: what's wrong with us that we're capable of this, and what are we going to do about it?  Isaiah 52 to 53 was written to answer those same two questions. It was written to a nation facing exile, to people who were about to face captivity, atrocities, and prison. And it has maybe the most well-known answer in the Bible to the question about human evil: God is sending somebody, the servant of the Lord. In this passage, we learn 1) who he is, 2) why he came, and 3) what he did. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on February 28, 1999. Only the high priest could enter the inner room, and that was only once a year, bringing animal blood for the sins of the people and himself. These rituals symbolized that full access to God was not yet open. But Christ changed everything. He entered a greater, heavenly sanctuary and offered His own blood, not the blood of animals. His sacrifice brings eternal redemption and cleanses the believer's conscience. A covenant requires death, and His death established a new and better covenant. After ascending into the holy place of heaven, He will come again, having already dealt with sin, bringing final salvation to those eagerly waiting for Him. We see the beauty and seriousness of God's design through the Old Covenant. It taught us the weight of sin and the need for sacrifice. But now, through Jesus, we have something even greater. He entered a more perfect place, not made by human hands, and offered His own blood to secure eternal redemption. His sacrifice not only cleanses the outside; it reaches our hearts and clears our conscience. We are invited to serve God with full assurance, not because of our efforts but because of His mercy. Let us honor both the foundation that was laid and the fulfillment we now have. Let us live with gratitude, cleansed by Jesus' blood and anticipating the triumphant return of Jesus. Benevolent Father, thank You for sending Jesus as our perfect sacrifice and eternal high priest. He did not offer the blood of animals but gave His own life to secure our redemption. Through Him, we now have access to Your presence and the promise of eternal life. Cleanse our hearts and renew our minds so that we may serve You with sincerity and devotion. Help us to live in gratitude for the mercy we have received. May we never take lightly the cost of our salvation. Please accept our faith as we wait with hope for the return of our Savior. Thought Questions: How is Christ's high priesthood and sacrifice greater than the regulations of divine worship and the earthly sanctuary in the Old Law? What did the blood of Jesus Christ accomplish? Read Online“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling!” Luke 13:34It's helpful to ponder the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His heart is one that is strong and gentle, compassionate and just, merciful and truthful. In this Gospel passage, we are given a glimpse of Jesus' love for the people of Jerusalem. He was not expressing His love for the city, but for the people in the city. It is clear that His deepest desire, His strong yearning, was that they allow Him to draw them close to Him so that He can protect them from all evil.Jesus begins by speaking the word “Jerusalem” twice. This expresses deep compassion for the people of that city. It also expresses a lament that they have not turned to Him, remaining unwilling to change. Their refusal began long before Jesus walked the earth when their forefathers rejected the call of the prophets to repent and turn back to God. The stubbornness of their fathers continued with the people of Jesus' day, and He experienced their rejection. This rejection did not lead Jesus to anger or condemnation as much as it led Him to holy sorrow.The image of a hen gathering her brood under her wings is a lovely image to meditate upon. A mother hen protects her chicks with great courage and without concern for her own safety. When danger approaches, she extends her wings and covers the vulnerable chicks to protect them. Jesus uses this motherly image to express His desire to protect not only the people of Jerusalem, but all of us.If Jesus yearned to gather the people together under his “wings” to protect them, then we should know, with certainty, that we need our Lord's protection. He would not desire something that was unnecessary. He is not an overly protective God Who irrationally worries about His children. His concern is real and necessary, and we must know that we need His protection.As you go about your daily life, do you feel as though you can handle life on your own? Do you act as an independent child who wants to separate yourself from the safety of your parents? Though we must all work to become responsible in life, we will never arrive at a point where we no longer need the protection of our loving God. The world in which we live is filled with dangers from which only God can protect us.At the beginning of today's Gospel, Jesus referred to Herod as a “fox.” That image must be seen in the context of Jesus desiring to act as a mother hen, protecting her brood. Jesus was told that Herod was trying to kill Him, but He clearly was not afraid of Herod. Of Herod's desire to kill Jesus, Jesus said, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose.'” As a protector, Jesus took authority over demons, performed healings and opened the gates of Heaven by rising from the dead on the third day. As we go through life, there will be many demons who seek to attack us. We will need many forms of healing, and without the gift of Jesus' triumph over death itself, we will not be led to the glories of Heaven. Demons are real. Wounds are real. And the need for a Savior is real. Reflect, today, upon the image of Jesus acting as a mother hen, extending His wings over you to protect you from the many temptations and diabolical attacks you will encounter in this world. Ponder the fact that you need His daily protection. The demons will never stop their attacks. Mental, emotional and spiritual wounds need His healing. Jesus is the only one Who can protect you and heal you so that He can then pour forth the gift of eternal life. Remain under His protective care, and allow Him to fulfill the yearnings of His Sacred Heart. My compassionate Lord, You yearn to protect me from the many evils in this world. You yearn to heal me of the wounds my sins have caused. And You yearn to bestow upon me the gift of eternal life. I accept Your protection, dear Lord, and pray for the healing I need. Please cover me always and bestow upon me the gift of eternal life. The Word of God sometimes shocks us with the imagery it gives to describe the sins of mankind, and today's passage is no exception. As we begin, the Lord speaks with Ezekiel inviting him to pass judgment on Jerusalem, for the princes of Israel have abused their power in order to shed blood. The Lord goes on to tell a parable of sorts, describing Samaria (aka Israel) and Jerusalem as two sisters named Oholah and Oholibah. I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2720 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The Title for Today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Eternal Song of God's Unfailing Love - A Trek Through Psalm Eighty Nine 1-8 Today, we begin a new, pivotal, and magnificent chapter in our journey through the Psalms: Psalm Eighty-Nine. We are covering its opening, foundational verses 1 through 8, in the New Living Translation. This psalm is a Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. Ethan, like Heman from the deeply sorrowful Psalm Eighty-Eight we just concluded, was one of the wise men and musicians of Solomon's time. Yet, where Psalm 88 ended in the absolute darkness of suffering and silence, Psalm Eighty-nine explodes with a powerful, unrelenting declaration of faith in God's two greatest attributes: His Unfailing Love and His Faithfulness. This psalm is the theological answer to Heman's despair! It essentially says, "Even when I feel consumed by darkness, even when God's fury seems heavy upon me, I will still sing of His steadfast love!" Psalm 89 is a grand meditation on the Davidic Covenant, a promise from God that established David's throne forever. The opening verses are a magnificent hymn, celebrating the God whose word is established in the heavens and whose power is unrivaled, even in the Divine Council. So, let's allow this hymn of divine promise to lift our hearts and anchor our hope in the unwavering character of the Most High God. The first section is: The Eternal Covenant of Love and Faithfulness (Psalm Eighty-Nine 1-4) I will sing of the Lord's unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Your unfailing love will last forever; your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. The Lord said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen servant; I have solemnly promised David: ‘I will secure your throne among your descendants forever; I will make your dynasty last as long as the skies!'" Interlude The psalm opens with an immediate, resolute, and eternal commitment to praise: "I will sing of the Lord's unfailing love forever!" This is a personal vow, made by the psalmist, that will last for all time. The focus is squarely on God's "unfailing love" (ḥesed), that steadfast, covenant loyalty we've discussed so many times. It is the core quality of God's character that guarantees His adherence to His promises. The declaration to sing of it "forever" contrasts starkly with the finite life and suffering Heman described in the last psalm. Here, the emphasis is on the infinite nature of God's...

Earthly priests served in a copy and shadow of what exists in heaven, following patterns given to Moses. However, Jesus has received a superior ministry based on a better covenant established on better promises. The old covenant was not without faults, and God promised a new one. This new covenant is not written on stone but on hearts. God declared that He would be their God and they would be His people. Everyone would know Him, and He would remember their sins no more. With this new covenant, the old one becomes obsolete and is ready to vanish, replaced by something far greater. We are part of something greater than any system built by human hands. Jesus is not a distant figure in a temple made of stone. He is our high priest, seated with God, always interceding for us. We are not bound by the rules of the Old Law written on tablets. Instead, God has inscribed His truth on our hearts. We know Him personally, and He knows us completely. His promises are superior, and His mercy is genuine and life-changing. We are invited into a relationship founded on grace, where our sins are no longer remembered. Let us walk daily in His assurances, trusting that Christ is near us, and embracing the freedom of the new covenant with Jesus. Holy God, thank You for Your faithfulness through every covenant. We are grateful for the ways You have revealed Yourself, first through the law and now through Christ. You have written Your truth on our hearts and invited us into a closer relationship with You. Thank You for Jesus, our high priest who intercedes for us and makes the way to You clear and sure. Help us live with gratitude, not forgetting what came before but embracing the new, better, more excellent covenant in Christ. Read OnlineSomeone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Luke 13:27We should definitely take our Lord's words spoken above to heart. It's easy to presume we will be saved. It's easy to simply presume that God is kind and that we are good people at heart and, therefore, salvation is assured. But that's not what Jesus says.So who will be saved? When we get to Heaven, God willing, we may be surprised at who is saved and who is not. This is clearly one of the messages of today's Gospel. Jesus even goes so far to say that some, when they die, will assume they are going to enter into Heaven but will hear our Lord say to them, “I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!” Again, we should take these words to heart.One of the most dangerous sins we can fall into is presumption. Presumption is deadly because it has a double effect upon us. First, the person caught in presumption is one who has committed mortal sin but has not repented of it. But the presumptuous person also remains incapable of repentance because they refuse to acknowledge their sin. Their conscience is not working. They have blinders on and expect God to wear those same blinders. But God sees all things and judges accordingly.The “narrow gate” of which Jesus speaks is a simile used by Jesus to tell us that it is not easy to obtain Heaven. It requires a concerted effort on our part as well as the infinite mercy of God. But regarding our part, the attainment of Heaven is only possible if we intentionally seek out the will of God and respond generously to Him. First, that means we confess and turn away from our sins. But from there, it means that we make every effort to fulfill God's will in our lives.If this is hard to accept, simply remind yourself that this teaching came directly from Jesus Himself. He is absolutely clear and means what He says. If that fills you with a sort of holy fear, then that is a good thing. “Holy fear” is a gift by which we have a well-ordered conscience that is able to identify those things in our lives that have become immovable obstacles to eternal salvation. The same well-ordered conscience will lead us to that narrow gate which is the only path to eternal life.Reflect, today, upon the fact that we must all take eternal salvation seriously. If you find that you have become lax in your spiritual life, then use this Gospel as a motivation to change. Do not allow yourself to be one of those knocking at the gates of Heaven, only to realize that our Lord does not know you. Do all you can to eradicate the sin of presumption from your life, and your reward will be truly great in Heaven.My most merciful Lord, You and You alone can open the gates of Heaven to us, and You and You alone will do so only to those who have responded to Your holy will. Please open my eyes to any ways that I turn from You and remain lax in my spiritual journey. Give me the grace I need to see clearly and to respond to You with all my heart. The crowds come to listen to Jesus, but Jesus comes to hear the crowds. He's tuned into the silent voices of hearts speaking trust, hope, and desperate faith. Mark tells us about some friends—four of them—who quietly say with their actions, Let's push through this crowd. Let's dig into this roof. Let's hold onto these ropes. Let's see what Jesus will do. Their faith isn't loud, but Jesus perceives it. He sees their determination, he hears their silent prayers and pleading. Mark closely records each small step—pushing through the crowd, digging into the roof, holding on to the ropes, lowering their dear friend to Jesus. Jesus sees it all. And when he does, he responds not only with healing, but with forgiveness. "When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Take heart, son, your sins are forgiven.'" Faith, sometimes, is not just in words but in actions, in persistent movement, in refusing to be discouraged. But within the crowd, others are speaking a different language—a language of disbelief, skepticism, and scorn. Only Jesus hears those words too. "Why does this man speak like that? He's blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Even as God offers forgiveness and healing, doubt fills the room. Yet Jesus persists. He confronts disbelief, he offers grace, and he calls us to trust him even when others do not. So what is Jesus hearing from you today? Are your words silent prayers of faith, a whisper of hope, or perhaps a desperate plea to break through the darkness? Or do doubts crowd in, pushing back against hope, afraid to believe that God is good and can be trusted? Jesus hears it all. And he calls us to push through, to dig in, to hold on, to believe that his heart is truly good for us. Sometimes, faith—the kind that moves mountains—is simply the kind that pushes through, digs in, and keeps holding on. Mark's story reminds us: God is good. You can trust him. In your struggle, in your prayers, in your need, let faith whisper, Perhaps God, in his goodness, will help me. That is my prayer for my own soul, for my family—for my wife and my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you today. May it be so. "   Last week, we continued through the letter of 1 John and explored how to have “A Discerning Life: Dealing with Deceivers." This week, we continue through the letter of 1 John, and we will explore how to have A Discerning Life: Living in Light of the Lord's Return" from 1 John 2:28-3:3 from the NIV, which is found on page 1901 of your Pew Bibles. God's Children and Sin 28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him. See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Opening Prayer The doctrine known as the Second Coming (or the return of Christ) either attracts mockery, strikes fear, or brings comfort.  Many men and women were raised with a respect for the Bible or were brought up in the church, but never fully grasped the gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. As such, they hear about the coming of Christ to judge the living and the dead … and it brings dread. Perhaps there are also some true believers who have strayed so far from the right path that they fear the coming of the Savior as the day they must give an account for their lives of unfaithfulness to the Lord. In both cases, the Second Coming is associated with fear or shame. However, many believers eagerly await their Lord's return with hope and anticipation. They know and believe with longing the words of Paul: For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died[a] will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
