When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice.” John 10:2–4Do you recognize the voice of the Shepherd? Does He lead you each and every day, guiding you into His holy will? How attentive are you to what He speaks each day? These are some of the most important questions to ponder.Recognizing God's voice is something that many people struggle with. There are often many competing “voices” that speak to us each and every day. From the latest news in the headlines, to the opinions of friends and family, to the temptations all around us within the secular world, to our own self-drawn opinions, these “voices” or “ideas” that fill our minds can be hard to sort through. What is from God? And what is from other sources?Recognizing the voice of God is indeed possible. First of all, there are many general truths that God has already spoken to us. For example, everything contained in the Holy Scriptures is the voice of God. His Word is alive. And when we read the Scriptures, we become more and more familiar with God's voice.God also speaks to us through gentle inspirations that result in His peace. For example, when considering a certain decision you may need to make, if you present that decision to our Lord prayerfully and then remain open to whatever He wants of you, oftentimes His answer comes in the form of a deep and certain peace of heart.Learning to recognize the voice of God in your daily life is accomplished by building an interior habit of listening, recognizing, responding, listening some more, recognizing and responding, etc. The more you hear the voice of God, the more you will recognize His voice in the most subtle of ways, and the more you come to hear the subtleties of His voice, the more you will be able to follow. In the end, this is only accomplished by an ongoing habit of deep and sustaining prayer. Without that, it will be very difficult to recognize the voice of the Shepherd when you need Him the most.Reflect, today, upon how attentive you are to God in prayer. What does your daily prayer look like? Do you spend time each day listening to the gentle and beautiful voice of our Lord? Do you seek to form a habit by which His voice becomes clearer and clearer? If not, if you do struggle in recognizing His voice, then make the decision to establish a deeper habit of daily prayer so that it is the voice of our loving Lord Who leads you every day.Jesus, my Good Shepherd, You speak to me each and every day. You are constantly revealing to me Your most holy will for my life. Help me to always recognize Your gentle voice so that I can be led by You through the challenges of life. May my life of prayer become so deep and sustaining that Your voice always echoes within my heart and soul. 746 He Had Compassion on Her, A Guided Christian Meditation on Luke 7:11-15 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in  and connect wi h the true source of peace, Jesus Christ.  Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate,  deflate. Scripture for Meditation Luke 7 NKJV 11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. NASB 11 Soon afterward Jesus went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd. 12 Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her and said to her, “Do not go on weeping.” 14 And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother. Meditation on Scripture: When I first read this scripture in the past I was impressed by the power Jesus demonstrated over death. It is clear that Luke was intending to highlight Jesus' power over death and how that impacted the people. They responded with fear and then turned to glorify God. This is the natural response to God's power. It wasn't until I was reflecting on why this story was written. It is a very short account of what happened. No details except that of a desperate mother. Jesus could have demonstrated His power by moving the mount of Olives or some other visible feat. He chose to save a Mother. At this time of the year we celebrate mother's day. We can be tempted to think of glorious successes. Perhaps this sets a challenging unrealistic standard for family relationships.  This account from Luke demonstrates a family in agony. It demonstrates a family breaking, being separated by death, and in this time the prospect of a childless mother with nobody to care for her and protect her. Many times in our lives it seems like this can be just an appropriate reflection of Mother's day also. A mother in desperation before the Lord when her family seemed to be deteriorating. Aside from the miracle the only response Jesus showed was that He felt compassion. As you struggle in life and things inevitably do not go your way, remember the widow of Nain. When you feel broken or that your hope is fading remember that Jesus demonstrated compassion on this nameless mother. He calmed her weeping, then solved her problems with His touch. I hope and pray that each of us can trust Jesus enough to look to the way in which he chooses to heal us and our relationships. Many times it is not in the method we hope for or suspect, but he does it with compassion. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Resurrection and the Mystery of Transformation I don't think I have ever considered the resurrection of Jesus and Mother's Day at the same time. But as we celebrate Mother's Day today, there are many of us whose mothers are no longer with us. Hunter and I, along with many of our family, gathered around my mother's grave site this last weekend as we laid her ashes to rest alongside my dad's, his brothers, and their parents. My mom has been enveloped into the great mystery, the true home that we will only discover when we finally shed this earthly husk and are transformed. But transformed into what? Even Paul struggled to understand or know it. In his attempts to describe it, he used the example of the everyday seed, a tiny dry brown microcosm of life, which only blooms in full beauty when it has been nestled into the dark soil. There, through water, sun, and light, it finally emerges into a new life-giving plant, looking nothing like the thing it started as. And in its transformation, it takes its unique place in an ongoing participation of life. We are part of this great mystery, which those who have gone before us are discovering, connected through the sustaining life of our loving creator. For now, we experience the heat of the sun, the droughts, the weeds that seem to threaten, even as we learn to cast off our dry husk, yearning to be fully fruitful, fully alive. Ours is to trust in the process of change, resting in the hope of transformation and restoration. We are the small dry seed, the life of the creator deep within us, only fully transformed as we settle into the earthy soil, trusting in the great hope that resurrection will come. Buried in brokenness, raised in glory; buried in weakness, raised in strength. That's a hope and a mystery I hold for my own soul, for my family, and for all who hear these words today. May we live in the light of resurrection, trusting the God who brings life from the dust, and in His promise that we, too, will be made new. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. In this passage, the Apostle Paul makes one of the most extraordinary statements of this entire letter: “Do not be anxious about anything.” Anything? I can understand saying, “Don't sweat the small stuff,” but “Don't worry about anything?”It would be easy to dismiss Paul's words if he were some lofty, ivory-towered theologian. But remember, Paul was writing this letter from prison! If anybody had reason to worry, it would be him. He literally didn't know if he would survive from one day to the next. And yet, letting go of worry was how he lived–how he survived.How is that possible? Let's see if we can find some answers by looking at three questions: Where does worry come from?What does worry cost?How is worry defeated?  1.     Where does worry come from?Your culture and history and biology can set you up to be a worrier. But we all wrestle with worry because we all have problems.An expert in this field says that worry results primarily from two things: A heightened sense of vulnerability, andA diminished sense of power.We worry because we're vulnerable and exposed and we know we can't do much about it. Conversely, where there's a decreased sense of vulnerability and increased sense of power, anxiety will be lessened.This is why Pauls reminds us to “Rejoice in the Lord.” When you have entered into a relationship with Him, you have no reason to be anxious because Someone real big is with you 2.     What does worry cost?Worry causes all kinds of physical ailments. But it also leads to a “divided mind.” That's literally what the Greek word means. Worry multiplies problems actually keeping me from finding a solution.  3.     How is worry defeated? We said earlier that when you increase your sense of power, anxiety is diminished. That's why Paul tells us, “Don't worry about anything, instead pray about everything.” Pray about the big stuff. Pray about the little stuff. If something is big enough to be in your thoughts, it's big enough to pray about. In fact, those same studies all say that if you do not have a mother, you are in fact, not here. Due to this overwhelming evidence, it is a safe conclusion to say that everyone is impacted by mothers. All joking aside, celebrating Mother's Day is a joy and blessing not to be taken lightly. Our sweet Lord was born of a woman, and He honored her up until the moment of His death. Tomorrow is not only for moms, however, as the Word of the Lord is able to teach and admonish us all. Make sure you join us tomorrow in honor of the moms in your life, but to also worship the living God and hear His truth for you.

One of the most frequent questions is "What is God's will for my life?" To answer that question, we might even be tempted to flip through scripture looking for anything that might help us. Well, flip no further! Today's study in Psalm 37 provides guidance and comfort and encouragement to those who would seek to follow God's will for their lives. At Jesus' Crucifixion and Death, the “Temple Veil” Was Torn; After Jesus Easter Resurrection, You Now Pray Directly with God MESSAGE SUMMARY:  Think about the magnitude of your direct and personal access to God that your prayers give you, through Jesus, if you will only pray. Before Jesus, ordinary people did not have direct access to God, through the Throne Room of God, with a direct personal relationship with God. In Old Testament times, people would come to the priests; and the priest would offer up a sacrifice on behalf of the people. The priests, and not the people, were communing directly with God. On Good Friday and at Jesus death on the cross, the “Temple Veil” was torn from top to bottom (i.e. “Temple Vail” was a large, very thick, and very heavy barrier that divided that portion of the Temple accessible by those wishing to sacrifice for prayer and the “Holy of Holies” where the only the High Priest could meet with God and pray on behalf of the people of God.). At Jesus Resurrection, no longer was an intermediary (e.g., a Priest) required for direct prayer with God by the people in Christ (i.e. Jesus Followers).  Because Jesus created a New Covenant relationship with His followers, now your prayers are in direct communion with God, the Creator of the Universe. Everyone, who is in Christ, may have access to the Throne Room of God in the name of Jesus. What a privilege this direct access to God is for those who are in Christ. The author of Hebrews, in Hebrews 4:16, tells Jesus Followers that, because of the Gospel, you have direct access to God's “throne of Grace” for your needs: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.".   TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation.
