This week, we’ll hear from author, certified health coach, and former QVC host Kerstin Lindquist. With a background in journalism and more than a decade in broadcast sales, Kerstin has reached millions through her work in health, wellness, and personal growth. Her journey—marked by infertility, loss, caregiving, and career pivots—inspired her to study the roots of stress and its impact on the body. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from writer, wife, and mother Kara Stout. Having faced significant personal challenges, including the loss of both her parents and a difficult journey through infertility before adopting her daughter, Kara has learned the importance of simplifying life, setting boundaries, and finding peace amid a fast-paced, often overwhelming, culture. But I will tell you that fear, every step of the way, has been a constant companion.” - Kerstin Lindquist “If you remain in the present and next to [God], you can calm the fear. But as long as you’re remaining future-focused—what’s gonna be next, how am I gonna provide for my family, how am I gonna get over this health hurdle—then there will be fear.” - Kerstin Lindquist “I stand on stages and talk to thousands of people at a time about how to reduce stress and get closer to the Lord, hear the Lord, and combat fear. But it is a practice.” - Kerstin Lindquist “One of the big, huge ingredients to people having stress is not living out their purpose. Our purpose is always connected to the Lord and serving others. And you know without a doubt that you’re in your purpose if you feel the Lord’s presence, participation, and peace.” - Kerstin Lindquist “There really isn’t any way for us to completely rid stress from our life. But the beauty of our bodies—even if we go back and look biblically—it really does give us kind of the rule book on how to deal with things, which is why we talk about God resting. Even in the midst of stress—like at the bottom of a boat in a storm—He was still resting.” - Kerstin Lindquist “I ask myself the same questions [during my devotional time]: How are you feeling? How do I need to humble myself before the Lord? What am I grateful for? What am I praying for? What am I excited about today? What am I stressed out about today? How am I going to react to that stress? What do I have to hand over to the Lord? Who am I gonna serve today?” - Kerstin Lindquist “It was extremely difficult to have to endure the loss of both parents, but at the same time, I saw how real God was in that suffering, in that grief, and it was a gift to be able to draw near to God in that deep suffering.” - Kara Stout “Something that I felt God encouraged me to do in the early days of becoming a mother, that I continue to remind myself of today, is to recognize when I’m striving and then to simplify.” - Kara Stout “Sometimes people can become accustomed to anxiety or worry, but God gives us a different way to live—a life lived safe in His peace, despite trials and circumstances.” - Kara Stout “God does not leave us on our own to deal with life’s worries and hardships. He’s a God of compassion, and He’s there for us, always, to help us. It’s just His love that really gives us so much peace in those moments.” - Kara Stout “Though there are multiple ways our hearts can feel troubled at times, God is our ever-present, always available remedy for the troubles of our hearts.” - Kara Stout ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! The members asked why their church was buying a steeple. Was this the best use of God’s resources? What about feeding the poor? The pastor replied that the funds came from donors and needed to be spent as they wished. “Besides,” he quoted Jesus, “the poor you will always have with you” (Mark 14:7). The pastor quickly apologized for his flippant, out of context remark, which led me to wonder, What was Jesus’ context? Six days before His death, a woman anointed Jesus’ with expensive perfume. The disciples were disgusted. Why wasn’t this perfume sold to help the poor? Jesus replied by quoting Deuteronomy 15:11, “You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me” (John 12:8). Jesus often cited Deuteronomy, so He knew what was written a few sentences earlier: “There need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving to you . . . , he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the Lord your God” (vv. 4–5). Perhaps this was another reason for Jesus’ rebuke. Poor people existed only because Israel hadn’t obeyed God’s instructions. Now the poor were being used to distract from Jesus—the true Israelite who would fully obey to the end. We need not choose between Jesus and the poor. We love people best by loving Him most and loving Him most inspires us to love others best.

Engage with scripture readings, heartfelt devotionals, and collective prayers that draw you into the heart of God's love. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible! In today's episode, host Hunter guides us through a thoughtful reading of Isaiah chapters 29 to 31 and James chapter 1. Together, we reflect on powerful themes of trust, humility, and transformation. Hunter invites us to consider what it means to truly accept the Word that God has planted in our hearts—a Word that points to Jesus Himself, the living Word with the power to save and transform lives. As we journey through these Scripture passages, we're reminded of the importance of not just hearing God's Word, but letting it shape our actions, attitudes, and relationships. Hunter wraps up with a time of heartfelt prayer, encouraging all of us to walk in God's joy, strength, and love throughout the day ahead. So grab your Bible, settle in, and let's discover together what God is saying to us today. TODAY'S DEVOTION: What is the word that God has planted in your heart? That's the important question James is asking, and one we must truly consider. The apostle James urges us to humbly accept the word that God has planted in our hearts because it has the power to save our souls. So, let's be clear about what that word is. The word that saves and transforms is not our performance or even our own striving—it is the Living Word, our Lord Jesus. Jesus is the One with the power to save your soul, and – as Hunter so clearly reminds us – he's already done it. That is the good news. It's not about what we do. It's about Christ—his life, his saving power, his indwelling presence. This is the true Word with the power we need, both to save and to change us. James reminds us that humbly receiving this gift brings transformation, not only for eternity, but for the here and now. The gospel—the good news of Jesus—has that kind of power. We are invited to look deeply into the “perfect law that sets us free,” to gaze into that mirror and see the origin of our design, the very image of our Creator, and to recognize who we really are in Christ. When we see ourselves through the gospel—when we remember who we are because of the One who lives in us—we find power to overcome, to live newly, to control our tongues as James instructs, and to love those in the world who are most vulnerable. What seemed impossible—self control, selflessness, deep compassion—is now possible, not because of our effort but because of Christ who lives in us and has made us new. So what is the word God has planted in your heart? It is Jesus—and he makes all the difference. Let's remember what we see when we look in that mirror: see him, see what he has done, and see what we have truly become. That's the truth that empowers us to live out this day in his joy, in his power, and in his love. That's the prayer for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family—my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Almighty and ever loving God, you have brought us to the light of a new morning. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may walk this day in peace. Guard our steps from temptation, shield us from the weight of fear and shame, and lead us deeper into the joy of your presence through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. O Christ, light of the nations, shine in every place where shadows dwell. Call the scattered home, Heal the wounds of division and gather all people into the communion of your grace. May the knowledge of the Lord cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Amen. And our Lord. Make my hands ready for mercy, make my eyes quick to see the hurting, my ears open to the cry of the lonely, and my feet swift to bring good news. Let me seek to bless, not to be noticed, to serve, not to be praised, to forgive, not to hold back. For in your way is life, in your mercy is healing, and in your love is the peace this world cannot give. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray. The Lord's Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Luke 10:38-42 - Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to His teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Bible Reading: Psalms 27:7-10; 116:1-9When Maggie stepped into the batter's box, she already had two strikes. One more would put her on the bench. She glanced at the stands. Her foster mom wasn't there. Maggie sighed. Her team chanted, "Two-strike hitter, don't be a quitter!" The pitch came in fast, and Maggie connected, sending the softball past the outfield. Softball took her mind off everything. When she got back home, her social worker was out front holding a bag with all Maggie's belongings. Oh no, I forgot! I'm moving today. She forced her feet to keep walking. Ever since Dad died, it was one foster home after another. After several months in her new house, Maggie saw a Bible lying open on her foster mom's desk. The words "I love the Lord because He hears my voice" jumped out at Maggie. "He doesn't hear my voice," she said out loud.Alice, Maggie's foster mom, came in and asked, "Who doesn't hear you, honey?" "Jesus doesn't. When Mom left, Dad told me to pray. When Dad got sick, I prayed. Now they're both gone." Alice put a soft hand on Maggie's shoulder. "You play softball--I did too. Do you ever cheer, 'Two-strike hitter…'""'Don't be a quitter!'" Maggie answered. "I'm a quitter at asking God for anything."Alice tapped the Bible. "Look at this psalm--Psalm 116. This man had pain and death all around him. He said he was brought low, but God heard him. Think--when your mom left, who was still with you?""Dad." Maggie paused. "And Jesus. And when Dad was sick, he told me that because Jesus died for me, I could trust Him even in hard times."Alice nodded. "Psalm 27 says that even if your mother and father are gone, the Lord will care for you. The Lord is taking care of you, Maggie. He sent you here, and we love you. We prayed for you before you came--and we're praying for your mom too. We don't know what she'll do. But we know what Jesus will do.""He'll hear my voice?" "Yes, He always hears you. Praying gives you a deeper friendship with God. When it comes to prayer, be that two-strike hitter, Maggie."Maggie grinned. "I won't be a quitter." –Laura RoeslerHow About You?Do you ever feel like you're striking out with God when you pray? Don't give up. Even when it seems like God isn't listening, He hears your prayers. He cares about your tears and your worries. He wants to hear what you have to say. We hope all our Creeps and Peeper are also unsettled by our tales this week. Dan starts off in  North Carolina with a story about a man who tried to transform into an actual demon. And some think he was, in a way, successful. Then, his second tale is the story of some of the residents of a housing development outside of Houston, built on a forgotten cemetery, who claim that the spirits of those whose remains were disrespected were both awakened and angered by the destruction of their final resting place. Lynze has three stories today! Her first also takes us to Texas where a strange situation occurs with a neighbor. Then, a woman traveling alone has the creepiest taxi ride to her hotel. Lastly, a young boy runs into the former owner of his Grandmother's home. Scared To Death Merch: Exciting new merch is up in the store! Together, with Fr. Mike, we continue our examination of the sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance. In particular, we explore the different forms of penance, such as prayer, fasting, almsgiving, as well as other things people can do that orient their hearts towards conversion. Fr. With over two decades of experience optimizing performance for NCAA and NHL athletes, Justin shares how a life-threatening health scare forced him to apply his elite strategies to himself—uncovering a deeper, more universal truth: everyone deserves access to the systems that help the best perform at their best. Now a bestselling author, speaker, and host of The OWN IT Show, Justin helps leaders, executives, and athletes take ownership of their health so they can fully live out their God-given mission. His journey is a powerful reminder that faith, discipline, and purpose-driven living are essential for real transformation. Whether you're a high achiever, a health seeker, or someone navigating personal adversity, Justin's story will challenge you to stop surviving—and start owning your life, mind, body, and mission. In This Episode You Will Hear: • I still remember at 7, 8, 9, 10,11, 12 years old, playing outside on the outdoor rinks for 3, 4, 5 hours a night in -10, -15, -20 degree weather. (6:27) • At 8 years old, I knew what my mission was – what my God-given calling was which was to be part of the redemption story of the health of America. (7:07) • I was raised with a deep conviction and relationship with the Lord, and just a love for people. (7:45) • As men we think that we can grab little issues and dump them in a bucket, and we handle them like it's nothing, but little do we know they're stacking up. (11:35) • There are 4 types of heats: An addictive heart, a hardened heart, a performance heart, and a bruised heart. (13:43). • What are our habits? What are our behaviors? How do we live? How does that show the stewardship and honor for what we've been given to carry out His calling? (15:36) • If you know who's you are, and who's call you're executing, at the end of the day, the results don't matter, it's the journey you're waiting on. (18:13) • Isaiah 40 – Those who are willing to wait on the Lord will rise up on wings like eagles, will run and not grow weary, will walk and not grow faint. (18:51) • The younger generation is learning in a new way. They want to have evidence. (19:41) • We could be pulled off-purpose. And the moment you get distracted is the moment you get disconnected. (21:58) • I always ask 3 questions: What's your name? How's your heart? How can I help? (30:35) • Try to be a reflection of love every single place you go. Try to speak life into people. (32:49) • You have a choice: Do you want your compromise to be compounding in your life? Or do you want your commitment to be compounding in your life? (33:37) • I grew up a fat kid: Was teased, made fun of, ADHD, OCD. (35:41) • Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure. (42:48) • How we live is our true and proper worship. (44:17) •  I'm learning that I'm perfectly imperfectly wired. The Poco a Poco Podcast with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal

As Fr. Mark-Mary mentioned, the friars will be taking a meaningful break to embrace the rest and the joy of the Jubilee Year. While they are away, please enjoy listening (or re-listening) to this previously released episode, and join us in continuing to pray for Fr. Mark-Mary, Fr. Innocent, Fr. Angelus, and Fr. PT as they follow God's will and heed the call of the Jubilee. The Poco a Poco podcast happens because of many generous donors, including recurring monthly donations of any amount. Thinking about helping out? You can give at https://spiritjuice.org/supportpoco. Thank you! --- There are some sins that we just can't seem to shake—habitual sins that keep us coming back to the confessional over and over (and over) again. But no matter how consistent this sin seems, there's one who is more consistent: the Lord. His mercy and grace are greater than our sins and failings. Maybe you're discouraged. Frustrated. Worn down. That experience is real, but it's not who you are; it's not your identity. The truest, most real thing about your experience is his mercy. So don't settle for your sin. Don't believe that well, this is the way it's going to be. No! Return to the confessional, where the grace that's poured out is restorative to that specific wound, and begin again.

Welcome back to chapter 16 on Build Your Bible Habit. Every chapter of Proverbs includes life instructions that help us to handle matters wisely (Prov. 16:20). The Word of God is sufficient to guide us in every aspect of our lives, but we need to know what it says in order to follow the guidance. Do you trust God so much with your life that you pray for direction and then only want His will? "Thy will be done" is an essential part of the prayer pattern that Christ left us in Matthew 6:9-13. Proverbs 16:3 is another way of saying, "Thy will be done." When we commit our works to the Lord, He makes us stable, secure, and steadfast.  "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." (Proverbs 16:3) Building your Bible habit with a daily Proverb will increase your wisdom and understanding as you yield your plans to God and apply His Word to your life.  Book Club Selections in the Shop Apply: Living What We Learn--31-Day Devotional by Francie Taylor What Do I Have to Lose?-Book 2 Devotional by Janice Wolfe Herbs for the Heart: A Study of James by Kathy Ashley From Overwhelmed to Overcomer by Natalie Raynes Blanton Ponder the Path: A 31-Day Devotional by Francie Taylor Rough Patches: Temporary Marital Tensions by Francie Taylor Follow Keep the Heart on Instagram Like Keep the Heart on Facebook "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, where together we journey through Scripture and discover the treasures God has for us each day. In today's episode, Host Hunter invites us into readings from Isaiah chapters 25 through 28 and Hebrews chapter 13, encouraging us to reflect on where we truly find lasting treasure. We'll hear about God's promises of hope in the midst of ruins, His faithfulness to the oppressed, and the remarkable gift of Jesus—who, as Hunter powerfully reminds us, was found “out in the trash heap,” discarded but offering the greatest treasure the world has ever known. Join us as we rest in God's Word, pray together, and remember the deep truth that we are not alone—united as brothers and sisters, loved beyond measure, and called to share that love with the world. Let's encounter perfect peace, real strength, and God's unending grace, together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: One man's trash is another man's treasure. I used to work as a garbage man for the city of Rockledge, Florida, and I can tell you that that's true. Some of the stuff that people threw away, I was sure to collect. It was still good. There was still a lot of life there. There was a treasure. And never has that been more true than in today's reading. We're told not to seek treasure in something new. The treasure we need is not found out there. Verse 9 says so. Do not be attracted by strange new ideas. Your strength comes from God's grace, not from rules about food which don't help those who follow them. Nor is our treasure to be found in the old. The old rules, the old sacrificial system. The treasures we are looking for can't be found there either. The treasure we are looking for, that we need, that the world is desperate for. The greatest treasure ever given is to be found in the most unlikely places. It's going to be found in the trash heap. In the old system, the sacrifice was made on an altar in the tabernacle, in the most important place in the world. There, the priest would offer a perfect gift, shedding the blood of an animal on the holy place as a sacrifice for sins. Then the trash, the discarded and unused parts would be taken to the trash heap outside the camp where it would be burned up. But outside, in that burning trash heap was something no one saw. It happened to be the most precious gift of all. It was discarded and thrown out like waste. And there's good reason why this sacrifice is being made exactly where it is, in that trash heap. Because the man offering this sacrifice lived his life among the discarded, among the disqualified, among the refuse and the refugees. It was there among them that he came to live and give his life. It was for them that he came to die in order that through his death, he might win for the world the greatest treasure the world has ever known. He has come to offer himself, his life, his presence to all, even the discarded and rejected. Out in the trash heap was a treasure. Verse 12 says: So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates to make his people holy by means of his own blood. He suffered and died out in the trash heap to make his people holy by means of his blood. So let us go out to him, outside the camp, there in the landfill, and bear the disgrace he bore. For this world is not our permanent home. We are looking forward to a home yet to come. Let's continue to offer him praise because he offered us broken ones the greatest treasure ever found. One man's trash is another man's treasure. So let's hold tightly to the treasure of him and experience the transformation that is available to all out there in the trash heap. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Almighty and ever loving God, you have brought us to the light of a new morning. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may walk this day in peace. Guard our steps from temptation. Shield us from the weight of fear and shame, and lead us deeper into the joy of your presence through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. O Christ, light of the nations, shine in every place where shadows dwell. Call the scattered home. Heal the wounds of division and gather all people into the communion of your grace. May the knowledge of the Lord cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Amen. And now, Lord, make my hands ready for mercy. Make my eyes quick to see the hurting, my ears open to the cry of the lonely, and my feet swift to bring good news. Let me seek to bless, not to be noticed, to serve, not to be praised, to forgive, not to hold back. For in your way is life, in your mercy is healing, and in your love is the peace this world cannot give. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. The Holy Spirit is speaking to every believer in Jesus, and He's asking the question, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” God wants to send every one of us into His Kingdom work. When we say, “Here am I, send me,” God will use our lives for His glory.Main Points:1. I've noticed over the years that the thing that keeps many Christians from stepping out in faith and allowing God to use their lives is that they disqualify themselves. Some feel unusable because of their past, their failures, and their mistakes. Others think God is looking for people who are more spiritual or more gifted.2. Notice in the verse with Isaiah, there are no qualifications listed. God was looking for one thing: availability. The old saying is still true: God is not looking for ability. He is looking for availability. 3. God is still searching for men and women who will say yes. He's looking for individuals who are willing to be sent and to be used by the Holy Spirit.Today's Scripture Verses:Isaiah 6:8 - “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

It's Wednesday, July 16th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Christians losing property rights in India, Nepal and Pakistan International Christian Concern reports Christians are losing their property rights and access to land in South Asian nations like India, Nepal, and Pakistan. In particular, India's second-most populous state of Maharashtra plans to demolish hundreds of church buildings within six months. Officials claim the structures are unauthorized, and many of them are in tribal areas.  The government also plans to enact an anti-conversion law. Such laws are often used to target Christians in the country. Currently, 12 of 28 states in India have anti-conversion laws. South Asian nations like India are ranked on the Open Doors' World Watch List as some of the most difficult places to live as a Christian.  World population growth slowing down Pew Research recently released world population projections for the next 75 years. The global population more than tripled over the last 75 years from 2.5 to 8.2 billion people. However, population growth is expected to slow down, only reaching 10.2 billion by 2100. Currently, the most populous countries in the world are China, India, and the U.S. China's population is expected to shrink by more than half over the next 75 years, while the U.S. and India are expected to grow slightly.    Global population growth is projected to primarily come from nations in Africa like Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, and Tanzania.  10th anniversary of undercover videos exposing Planned Parenthood This week marks 10 years since the Center for Medical Progress released their first undercover videos exposing Planned Parenthood. Executives for the abortion giant were caught discussing how they sold the body parts of murdered babies. The undercover investigation has contributed to efforts for defunding Planned Parenthood. Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue, served as a founding member on the board of the Center for Medical Progress. He said, “I am honored to have been a part of this historic investigation, even though it came at great personal cost to those of us involved in revealing the horrific truth about the illicit trade in aborted baby parts. Today's Planned Parenthood is vastly different from what it was in 2015. It is a weaker organization with waning political influence that is now collapsing from within.” Proverbs 6:17 says that among the seven things God hates are “haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.” Trump threatens Russia with tariff to get peace deal with Ukraine In a public meeting with NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte at the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened severe tariffs on Monday if Russia doesn't come to a peace deal with Ukraine in the next 50 days. TRUMP: “One of the reasons that you're here today is to hear that we are very unhappy, I am, with Russia. We're very, very unhappy with them. And we're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100%. You'd call them secondary tariffs. You know what that means.” (His comments occur at the :45 mark of this video) Trump also said the United States will sell top-of-the-line weapons to countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In turn, NATO countries would then be able to provide such weapons like the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.    Trump wants Federal Reserve to lower interest to save trillion dollars The U.S. consumer price index rose by 0.3% last month. That put the 12-month inflation rate at 2.7%. Prices have been generally decreasing over the last year, but the inflation rate is still above the Federal Reserve's target of 2%.  Trump responded to the news by calling on the Fed to lower interest rates by three points. He said this would save an estimated one trillion dollars on debt payments.  Bible readers most likely to volunteer in community And finally, the American Bible Society released the fourth chapter of its State of the Bible USA 2025 report. The chapter evaluated activities that promote wellbeing like physical exercise, spending time with a friend, volunteering in the community, meditation, and praying to God. The study found people who engage the most with the Bible are also the most likely to engage in those activities, especially volunteering in the community.  Such activities were also associated with higher levels of hope and lower levels of stress, anxiety, and loneliness. However, people who attend church regularly experienced even better results in those areas. 1 Timothy 4:8 says, “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, July 16th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  Plus, you can get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. As David faces a threat that will shake the very foundation of life, he knows that the LORD is his only refuge, even as others claim that a fearful flight is the only option. David takes comfort in knowing that God makes Himself present among His people according to His promise, even as He reigns over all the earth from heaven. As He sees all things, He knows the faithfulness of His people and promises that judgment will come upon the wicked. Knowing that the LORD is the Righteous One, we look forward to that Day when we will see Him face to face.   Rev. Jacob Heine, pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Topeka, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 11.  To learn more about Faith Lutheran, visit faithlutherantopeka.com. Join Sharper Iron this summer to study selected Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'” - Hebrews 13:5Sports betting is more popular—and more accepted—than ever, even among Christians. But is it just harmless fun, or something more? Dr. David W. Jones returns to our financial ethics series to help us examine what Scripture says about gambling and how believers should approach it.Dr. David W. Jones is Senior Professor of Christian Ethics at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Christian Financial Ethics and is the author of Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians. What Does Scripture Say About Gambling?Proverbs 13:11 reminds us that:“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”Gambling, which includes sports betting, bypasses God's designed rhythm of work and reward. 1 Timothy 6:9 warns that the desire to get rich quickly leads people into “ruin and destruction.” These verses challenge the notion that a fast win is simply a blessing—it may erode character. Is it always wrong to bet on a game with friends? Not necessarily. A one-time bracket pool during March Madness may not signal a deep moral compromise. But we must ask: Is this behavior occasional and harmless, or has it become habitual and idolatrous? The difference lies in the heart. It's not that gambling created the idolatry of money or sports—it revealed it. And perhaps in God's grace, it's giving us an opportunity to examine what we truly worship. The Stewardship QuestionEvery financial decision we make is a stewardship decision. Psalm 24:1 reminds us:“The earth is the Lord's and everything in it.”So before we spend God's money—even on entertainment—we must ask: Is this wise? Does this reflect my faith? Does it honor the Lord?We must start to think through whether our spending on gambling—even recreationally—glorifies God. That doesn't mean all entertainment is wrong. But we are called to be faithful managers of what belongs to God, and some forms of entertainment carry higher risks than others.Beyond personal stewardship, Christians must consider what they're supporting. The gambling industry is responsible for significant harm. Studies show that 1 in 5 gambling addicts attempt suicide, and addiction is rising fastest among young adults, according to the American Psychological Association. For those in the church, we must acknowledge this cultural shift and lovingly walk alongside people through it, offering them truth, grace, and accountability.Idolatry, Discontentment, and the Way BackSports betting may be legal, but legality is not the same as morality, and morality isn't always wisdom. If your habits reflect discontentment or a misplaced trust in money, that's a red flag. But there's hope. These things are not the unpardonable sin. 1 John 1:9 reminds us: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us... God is always ready to receive us.”Isaiah 26:3 also says:“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”If you're struggling with a gambling habit or questioning your motivations, seek accountability at your local church. And if addiction is involved, please pursue professional help. Freedom is possible—and peace is found not in the thrill of a win, but in keeping your eyes on Christ.Remember: just because it's permissible doesn't mean it's wise. True freedom is found not in betting on uncertain outcomes, but in trusting the God who holds the future. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm trying to understand where tax-free municipal bonds might fit into my overall investment strategy. How can they be used effectively for tax efficiency and generating income, and when would it make sense to include them in a portfolio?I have $19,000 sitting in an old 401(k) account, and I'm considering transferring it into a fixed annuity. I'm not retired yet and plan to return to work in the school system. One option offers lifetime income starting at age 74, but I'm not sure if that's the best use of my funds. What should I consider before making this decision?I'm in the process of updating my will now that I've moved to Texas. I'm wondering if it would be more in line with God's will to allocate a percentage of my estate to the three nonprofit ministries I support, rather than dividing everything evenly among my three children. How should I think through this decision from a biblical perspective?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians by Dr. David W. What are you worth? This is an ugly question you'd never ask in polite company, although you may be curious about the answer.“The real measure of your wealth is how much you'd be worth if you lost all your money.” This anonymous quote serves us well in our discussion of what happens when we choose to follow dollar bills, instead of the Lord. When we judge each other, and ourselves, by the value of our bank accounts, the size of our homes, or the luxury of the things we accumulate, we are choosing material wealth over our faith in God.Joshua 24:15 says, “Choose this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”The Bible is clear about the danger of worshipping money in 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”Money is one of our culture's greatest gods, and people will do just about anything if it means they can make money off of it. We are willing to compromise our integrity for the sake of profit, and nowhere is corruption more rampant than when money is at stake.Money is a necessary part of modern life; we no longer trade furs for a box of candles, or a basket of eggs for cloth to make a new shirt. While little green pieces of paper allow commerce to take place, the desire for money should never be the dominant influence in our decision-making.Let's pray.Lord, your word tells us no one can serve two masters. You are our provider, and the pursuit of material wealth cannot bring us closer to you. Be present in every decision and inspire every desire of our hearts to honor you.
