They are warned not to show special treatment to the rich while ignoring the poor, because all people are equally valuable to God. Favoritism contradicts the command to love your neighbor as yourself. Breaking even one part of God's law is akin to breaking the entire law. Believers are called to live with mercy, knowing that God will show mercy to those who extend it. The second half of the chapter emphasizes the connection between faith and works. Faith that is not accompanied by action is dead and worthless. True faith transforms the way people live. It is demonstrated through obedience, compassion, and good deeds that reflect a living and active trust in God, in the likeness of Abraham. Our faith should be evident in how we live and treat others. When we show kindness, serve with humility, and care for those in need, we reflect the heart of God. We are called to love everyone, not just those who seem important or easy to love. Every person has value, and how we treat them reveals what is truly in our hearts. Faith that remains silent or still is not alive or complete. It grows and moves through action. Trust in God should lead us to act with mercy, justice, and compassion in obedience. We cannot separate our beliefs from our actions. Let our lives be full of grace, service, and a deep desire to prove what we believe. Heavenly Father, thank You for leading us to faith and showing us how to live with love and mercy. Help us see every person through Your eyes and treat them with kindness and respect. Teach us to put our faith into action, not just in words but with true compassion and care, serving others with diligence. Let our lives reflect the goodness You have shown us. Remove any pride or favoritism from our hearts and fill us with a desire to be active in obedience. Teach us to have the courage of Abraham and Rahab, trusting Your will in all circumstances. Thought Questions: Is favoritism still an issue among God's people today? Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples, “A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said, ‘What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.'” Luke 16:1–2There is much to ponder in this parable and many lessons from which we can learn. To begin, the rich man should be understood as God and you as the steward. This is an important first lesson to learn because it reveals to us that, when it comes to material things in this world, God is the true owner of all—we are only stewards. Think about that carefully. When it comes to all that you own, all your money and possessions, do you hold on to it as if you were the complete master of these material items? Clearly most people do think this way. They may work hard to earn a living, save and buy this and that, build up their bank accounts, and then remain very attached to these material things, seeing them as “mine” rather than as God's. So the first very challenging lesson we should look at is that all we “own” is actually the possession of God. He only permits us to be stewards of the things of this world. Do you believe that?As stewards, we must be committed to use the riches within our stewardship only in the way that God wants it used. In this parable, the steward was reported to the rich man for “squandering his property.” We also are guilty of squandering the possessions of God when we use money in accord with our own will and desires rather than those of God's. This is an exceptionally common tendency, especially for those who have become the stewards of much money. Therefore, the more money that one has stewardship over, the more they will be tempted to squander it, meaning, use it for selfish purposes rather than for the glory of God in accord with His will. This is a hard teaching to accept and live. But these truths are indeed revealed to us by this parable, so it is essential that we listen.The words spoken by the rich man, “Prepare a full account of your stewardship,” are words that we must all anticipate hearing one day. If that day were today, what would that “full account of your stewardship” look like? Have you worked hard for selfish gain? Or have you worked hard to act with great responsibility over the things God has entrusted to your care?As the parable continues, we read that the steward acted “prudently” in that he devised a plan to make sure his material needs were met once he lost his position as steward. The “prudence,” however, that is spoken of here is a reference to the worldly, and therefore, evil ingenuity, cleverness, hard work and commitment many people have regarding the material wealth they seek to obtain in this world. Though it is good to be diligent and hardworking in life, too often this is done for the purpose of selfish gain. Just imagine if everyone who worked so hard at getting rich put even more effort into building up the Kingdom of God on earth! How different this world would be if we had so many hard workers for God's mission. Reflect, today, upon the simple truth that when it comes to the riches of this world, you are only the steward of what you possess, not its master. God wants you free from the attachment to material wealth so that you will be free to use all that you have for His glory and in accord with His purpose. That does not mean that you must donate all you have to charities. Instead, it means that you continually offer all that you have to God and seek to use it in accord with His will and His will alone. If that means you discern that God wants you to buy something new, then buy something new. If that means giving more away, then give more away. If that means living more simply as a holy sacrifice, then do just that. Money cannot buy happiness. Only embracing God's will to the fullest will result in the happiness and fulfillment you deeply desire. My Lord of all riches, You and You alone are the Master of all things created. All that I have and possess are Yours, dear Lord. Help me to believe this and to live my life purely as a steward of the possessions I have. To put today's passage in context, it's important to spend a moment considering when this vision occurred and what had happened up to this point. Remember that God had declared through Ezekiel that his glory had left the temple. Jerusalem would be made a desolation, and the people exiled from the land. The temple had become defiled and desecrated by Israel's idols, so the Lord sent the Chaldeans to demolish it. Here is the transcription of the devotional given after the Scripture readings and before the prayer, matched in tone, style, and format to your example: TODAY'S DEVOTION: This journey into God that provided you with forgiveness of sins, that gave you a joyful and grateful spirit, that made you a caring and generous person, that journey began by faith. When you woke up to the gift that God had given you in Christ and the truth of who you have now become in Christ, none of that happened by trying to become a good law keeper. These dear people in Galatia are being told that they must become circumcised. They must become Jewish converts. They're being instructed to follow the laws of Moses—the dietary laws, the dates, the deeds—all of it, because all of it would be necessary if they wanted to be counted among God's people. They're being told that Jesus was, in effect, a kind of first step to this new life and community. As Jewish converts, they would have to take the next step, and that meant circumcision. It's out of these pressures that Paul is urging them not to trade their freedom for chains, and the blessing of life for what he calls the curse of the law. Paul is saying that Jesus is the first and only step. The law was never meant to make us right with God. The law was given to come alongside us and convince our hearts of our need for a Redeemer and a Savior. It's there to point us to the cross—to God's self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. It's faith in what he has done, and what we have now become. That's where the joy is. And that's where Paul wants this church—and you and I—to live from. That's Paul's plea, not only to the Galatians, but to you and to me. What God has done for you in Christ is all that need be done. Paul wants us to keep our eyes fixed on him—not on ourselves—looking outward and upward and being changed and transformed as we look to him. So let's fix our eyes on Christ our Savior, on his beautiful life, continuing to look to him in faith, growing in Christ until He is fully formed in us. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. You know, handmade gifts are always the most special. Well, there are better crafted doll houses than the one my daughter got when she was a little girl. But we made it; it's handmade. My wife and I, for better or worse, did it with our own hands. One December we closed the basement and we started hammering and sawing away to build that doll house. There was a sign on the door that said "Do Not Open Till Christmas." That meant the basement. That drove the kids crazy, but we were having a great time doing it. Frankly, my month was crammed. But even though the work we did was often very late and it took quite a few hours, especially since I'm not the neighborhood handyman, I enjoyed every minute of working on it. Did I get tired? Yes. Was I too busy to do that doll house? Yes. Was it outside the things I do well? Yes. Was it a pleasure? Yes. Why? Because it was for a little girl I loved very much. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "What Love Does to Work." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Luke 7, and I'm going to begin reading at verse 37. It's the familiar story of the lady who loved Jesus very, very deeply. "When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume. And as she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them." Now, there's a discussion by the Pharisee with Jesus as to why she did all of this. And He simply says, "For she loved much." She loves her Master, and she uses everything she can find to serve Him. She kisses His feet. She says, "Wait, I have this perfume. I could use that to express my love for Him, and she breaks open that perfume." She says, "I've got my hair. I can dry His feet with my hair." It's as if she is looking for everything she can use to love Jesus with it. There's a principle here. Work is so different when it's an act of loving worship instead of grudging duty. Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord and not for men." And then it says, "It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Maybe you've just been cranking out your responsibilities lately and it's joyless - drudgery. Maybe those who are around you would testify to hearing more complaining and negative talk lately. It could be you're working for the wrong person. No, no, not for your boss. Don't do it for your boss, your company, your pastor, your church, your ministry, or your teachers. Don't do it for your children even, or your employees. See, work becomes lighter and more joyful when you begin each responsibility by saying, "Lord, I dedicate this everyday chore to You. I love You, and this job I'm doing, I'm doing as an offering to You. I'm giving it my best. I'm doing it for you, Jesus." A woman in this story used everything she could find to love Jesus. It's a beautiful picture - grabbing everything you do as something with which to love your Master. You're busy, tired, maybe feeling inadequate, like I did when I built that doll house. But it was for someone I really loved. Do your work for someone you really love. You may not love your work, but it makes a difference when you do your work for love.

Hey hey, it's Sarah Mackenzie!I am here with a bonus episode. I host another podcast — it's called Circle with Sarah— and it's a short, weekly podcast that helps all of us become the peace-filled, joyful mamas we're called to be. It goes up at RAR Premium every Monday during the school year. Recently, I recorded an episode for that podcast called "God is Not Disappointed in You." And not only did it really resonate with RAR Premium members, but we got several requests from members to please post this on the Read-Aloud Revival podcast so they could share it with their friends even if their friends weren't inside RAR Premium. Here's the episode:In our recent Circle with Sarah Retreat, you were all invited to submit questions about maintaining peace in your homeschool, because of course that was our theme, and so many of you did!It has been just a complete joy to read through those and consider them. Almost 120 questions came in actually, and we were only able to touch on a few during the retreat, and then we touched on a few more in our last Circle with Sarah Live.But as I was reading through your questions and just prayerfully considering how to answer them, one thing jumped out at me over and over again. I mentioned it, actually, at the very end of the September Circle with Sarah Live. It's this pervasive fear that so many of us have that really feeds into our anxiety about our homeschools and our kids and our parenting and our worry that we're not doing a good enough job with any of it. And the underlying belief that is a problem here is that we believe that God is disappointed in us as homeschooling moms, that we're failing Him, and He's disappointed.And I think this fear is probably exaggerated somewhat for us if we had a father or really any authority figure over us at any point in our lives who did express chronic disappointment in us. I think then it's very easy to translate that into feeling like God must also be feeling disappointed in us. That seems like the easiest thing to believe, like the truest thing.But listen to me, God is not disappointed in you. He is not surprised by anything you are facing in your life, your motherhood, your homeschool, your marriage, any of it. He's not surprised by any of it. On your absolute worst days, He's not surprised by how you acted or reacted. He already knows the worst and hardest and most challenging things that you are facing right now, and He loves you and He's calling you to this work anyway.He actually never asks us to be good enough. And He never asks us to get this just right. And I think it's worth remembering that He didn't actually think you would do a better job than you're doing. He's all knowing. He's sovereign. He didn't think you'd do a better job than you're doing at anything, in any part of your life. And He's not disappointed in you. I wonder if you can sit with that for just a second, like really sit with it? I want to read from Psalm 103:"The Lord is merciful and gracious,    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love."Later in that same psalm we read, "For He knows our frame;    He remembers that we are dust."So He knows who we are. He knows our capabilities, He knows our limits, He knows our frame, and He remembers that we are dust. And yet He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love.I wonder if you can say that out loud to yourself. God is not disappointed in me. Try it.How did that feel? Did it feel true? Did your voice wobble? Did you feel choked up? Did you feel like, I don't know if that's true? Listen, this is what you can say to yourself and know it is true. God is not disappointed in me. He is not disappointed in my kids. He is not disappointed in my homeschool. He is not disappointed in how I cook or how badly I cook. He is not disappointed in how clean I keep the house or how much laundry I got done this week, or whether I even touched it at all. Whether I ever follow through on teaching my kids chores or following up on that character issue or taking care of the parenting issues that are screaming at us in the face. He is not disappointed in how often I read aloud or how much homeschool we got done, or how many activities my kids are in, or whether my kids are still in their pajamas at 4:00 PM. None of this is a disappointment or a surprise to Him. He loves me. He loves you. And He promises us peace that transcends all understanding.That's a big one so I'm just going to leave us here today. We're going to come back to it again next week. But I wonder if at different points during your week, you can remind yourself, God is not disappointed in me. Write it on a post-it. Put it in a few different places. Put it wherever you brush your teeth. Put it where you wash your dishes, put it in the car when you're getting in the car to take your kids to activities or run an errand. Put it by your coffee pot in the morning. God is not disappointed in me. Write it down. See if you can maybe start to believe that this week and we'll circle back to it next week. You have everything you need to teach with peace that transcends with all understanding. You were made for this life. Read Online“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.'”  Luke 15:4–6Some of the great saints point out that the number one hundred represents perfection. One hundred refers to the perfection of the Kingdom of God, which represents not only all of the saints in Heaven but also the angels. The one lost sheep represents all of humanity as we make our way through this life. Jesus, of course, is the Shepherd Whose attention turns to fallen humanity on a diligent search for us so as to carry us home.First, notice that the Shepherd does not search for the one stray sheep out of anger but out of concern and love. Understanding this is essential if we are to have a correct understanding of how our Lord sees us when we stray. We must see His deep concern, His diligence in searching, and His unwavering commitment to find us in our straying condition. This is not a God Who sits back in judgment and anger but a God Who came to us, took on our fallen human nature, and endured all suffering so as to find us and bring us home.Notice also that in this parable, the Shepherd places the lost sheep on His shoulders and carries the sheep home. Oftentimes we can fall into the trap of thinking that we must make our way back to God by our own effort. But the truth is that God is always there, waiting to pick us up and carry us home. Our duty is to surrender to His merciful hands and to stop running. This is done by turning to Him and allowing Him to come to us and minister to us. The primary effort is on the part of our Lord once we surrender ourselves into His gentle Hands.Finally, notice that the rejoicing mentioned in this parable is on the part of the Shepherd. Of course we also will rejoice at being picked up and carried home to the perfection of God's Kingdom, but our rejoicing is done in response to the joy of our Lord. It is His joy we are invited to share in. It is His heart that is filled with gratitude as we allow Him to tenderly carry us home. “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep,” He says. Reflect, today, upon this holy image of the Good Shepherd. As you ponder this parable and imagery, be attentive to the various thoughts, memories, emotions and fears that are evoked within you. Each one of us is different, and our Lord deeply desires to come to each one of us right where we are, in the midst of our sins. Pondering the compassion of this Good Shepherd will open the door for our Lord to speak to you and to invite you personally to come to Him, turning away from the ways that you personally have strayed. Do not run away. Remain in confidence as He comes to you. Listen to His voice and say “Yes” to Him as He lifts you up to carry you home. My gentle Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd. You love me and search for me with diligence and fidelity. May I trust You enough to stop running from You and hiding from Your gentle voice. The law misapplied will cause you to keep your focus on you—either how well you are doing, or how miserably you are failing. The focus is the same. In the end, it's all you. Paul knew all about the law. He was an expert in the law. But what Paul discovered was the Gospel. And the Gospel turns our eyes off of ourselves, redirecting our focus on to Jesus—not what we have done or haven't done, but on Jesus, what He has done and what we have become in Him. Not I, but Christ, says Paul. Because that's what the Gospel does. It turns us outward to God, into the world as the new creatures that we are. Paul says, "I am crucified with Christ, and the life I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." Paul has discovered that his real life is in Christ, not in obedience to the law. And this was his message. And he would not let anyone distort or change that message—not even Peter. So when Peter began to insist on Gentiles obeying the law of circumcision, he rebuked him publicly. Where are you looking? Inward, onto yourself? Are you looking to your own piety to get you in the good graces of God? Or are you looking outward, away from yourself and onto Jesus—the One who loves you and who is with you, the One who has made you and reclaimed you? Look to Him. Keep your eyes focused on Him, and don't let the law or anyone move your gaze anywhere else. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Dr. Daniel Ragusa speaks at the Reformed Forum Annual Theology Conference, held at Lakeland Church in Gurnee, Illinois on September 27, 2025.  Dr. Ragusa, focuses on the dark period of Israel's exile and how it illuminates the deep human longing to return to God's presence, which had been lost due to their rebellion. Dr. Ragusa first establishes the devastating nature of exile by contrasting it with the desired state of dwelling in God's house, a theme illustrated by the pilgrimage described in Psalm 23. He references the Heidelberg Catechism to frame the Christian experience as moving from the "valley of exile" (sin and misery) up to the "mountain of God" (righteousness and everlasting life) through the work of the "mountain ascending mediator," Jesus Christ. Fulfilling your Ministry "And say to Archippus, "Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave you." ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭4‬:‭17‬ ‭ NIV = "complete the ministry" ESV = "fulfill the ministry" The Message = "And, oh, yes, tell Archippus, "Do your best in the job you received from the Master. Do your very best." "I am writing to Philemon, our beloved co-worker, and to our sister Apphia, and to our fellow soldier Archippus, and to the church that meets in your house." ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬b-2‬  Most likely Philemon, his wife Apphia, and their son Archippus. All in the same household.  Imagine one person being singled out at the end of this letter to the Colossians church.  Most scholars see Paul's admonition to Archippus as simple encouragement, similar to Paul's exhortations in his epistles to Timothy and Titus. It's interesting to note that Paul had never actually visited the Colossians church in person but we can be sure his written words to them made a tremendous impact and continue to do so today. We are each an Archippus and have a ministry to carry out.  Paul's encouragement to Archippus and his family should encourage all of us to also "complete the ministry" God has given us. Full Transcript Below: Super Practical Ways to Defeat DoubtBy Kelly Balarie Bible Reading:But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” – James 1:6-8 NKJV I sat at the restaurant, menu in hand. Frankly, I didn’t know a restaurant could have so many options to choose from. Trying to decide, I think, “Maybe I’ll get this… No, I’ll get that.” Minutes later, I think, “What about this?” My friend announces what they’re getting. . . Hmm… They’re getting that? Maybe I should, too. Mind like a pinball machine, changing directions a mile a minute –left, right, up, and down. Ahh! Now I really don’t know what to get. As soon as I decide, I consider the other way...Frankly, I am in the dead-heat of double-mindedness, or quadruple-mindedness, for that matter…. Ever been there? Doubting? Uncertain? Wavering? Believing the answer is yes, and then wondering if it is no? Wanting to go one way, but questioning if it is right? Scripture talks to us about double-mindedness and prayer when it says: “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:6-8 NKJV) This scripture helps us see that there is power when we move from double-mindedness to decisiveness. Why? Because decisiveness leads to confidence, clarity, and stability in the Lord. We want these things. And we also want great faith; confidence in the Lord is a key ingredient of faith. What does this look like practically? Instead of saying, “I don’t know if it is okay that I am asking God for this and so I doubt He will do it or if He really wants me praying this,” instead, we can say, “God, I am sure you will answer me about this, even if you come with fresh direction.” Instead of saying, “I don’t know if He will do it,” we can say, “God, I know you are more than able. I thank you that you are able. Oh, how I am confident in you and your faithfulness.” Then, take action -- with resolute determination to trust Him – all the way through. Now, I know… often, this is more easily said than done. I get it. When push comes to shove, or when life has a rub – it sure can feel hard. So, what do we do when doubt tries to creep up again? Sometimes, we must remind ourselves that even if we get things wrong, God is big enough to make things right. Grace is more powerful than any bad decision or even our best decision! More important than getting it right is remembering that God can make it right – even when we get it all wrong. Here, we can attach faith to any decision, eradicating double-mindedness to walk in God's confidence. God is able, even when we were not. For instance, say I prayed and felt peace about buying a car, so I bought it. If, afterward, I feel guilty because I have a sense I spent too much money, I may be inclined to doubt. However, I have the power to stop myself right there by drawing a line in the sand. As I draw this line, I can say, “God, I trust you. I choose to trust you, by faith, in the gap of my finances. I remember how you gave me peace when I bought the car. Thank you for that peace. Now, I ask you to direct me in the way you have me go with this car and my finances. No matter what, I am not looking back, but instead, I am trusting you. You will lead me. I am believing, by faith, that you will use this car in special ways, for your glory. I am not looking back, not fearing, and not doubting. I am not going to be tormented. I trust you to help me. Thank you, Jesus!” Here, a line is drawn in the sand that says: “Nope, I still trust you, God.” God is tremendously glorified, within our sure heart, when we are unwaveringly trusting in His good heart to help us. Intersecting Faith & Life: Do we believe God is good? I’ve noticed that if I don’t trust someone, I will not trust them when they say they are going to do something. It may sound odd, but we can’t say we trust when we don’t trust. We can’t easily follow God if we think He has only bad things in store for us. Why not take a moment and ask yourself if you really trust God? If you really believe His promises? How are you showing it in your life? In what ways are you finding your faith alive and active?
