It’s easy to think of “creation care” as optional—important, maybe, but not especially spiritual. This devotional challenges that assumption by reminding us that God’s relationship with humanity has always included stewardship of the world He made. In Genesis, God plants a garden and places humankind there with a clear purpose: to work it and take care of it. That means creation care isn’t a modern trend—it’s part of our original calling. The devotional begins with a striking, everyday example: artificial light can disorient migrating birds, drawing them off course and increasing the risk of collisions and exhaustion. Small choices we barely notice—turning on outdoor lights, decorating with strings of bulbs—can have real impact on the creatures around us. And on a broader scale, issues like pollution, deforestation, habitat loss, and harmful pesticides remind us that creation is groaning under the weight of sin and brokenness. Romans 8 describes nature’s longing for renewal, tied to God’s ultimate restoration of all things. The key shift the devotional emphasizes is this: dominion is not permission to destroy. God’s authority is marked by justice, mercy, and faithful care, and because we are made in His image, our leadership over creation should reflect His character. Everything belongs to God—“the earth is the Lord’s”—so our stewardship becomes a form of worship. The way we treat the environment is connected to the way we honor the Creator. While we may not control large systems or global decisions, we do have influence in our daily lives. The devotional offers practical examples of faithful stewardship: reducing nighttime light exposure, making windows safer for birds, planting trees, creating pesticide-free pollinator gardens, treating animals well, and picking up litter. These aren’t small, meaningless actions—they are tangible ways to imitate God’s compassion and justice. And they can become reminders of hope: God has broken sin’s curse through Christ and promises a future renewal for creation and for us. Read OnlineJesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. Mark 6:4–6It's an old expression that “familiarity breeds contempt.” It is often easier to harbor contempt for those closest to us than to offer admiration. This dynamic frequently manifests itself among relatives, neighbors, and friends. The “contempt” might remain subtle, without clear outward expression. Yet, when those close to us are honored, it is often easier to call to mind their faults than to join in their praise. These feelings, if left unchecked, not only harm human relationships but also blinds us to the workings of grace in those closest to us.Today's Gospel tells the story of Jesus returning to His hometown of Nazareth after beginning His public ministry. Soon after He was baptized and emerged from the desert, Jesus began gathering disciples, preaching authoritatively, and performing miracles. Though His ministry began in Capernaum, about twenty miles northeast of Nazareth, word spread quickly about Him, leaving the people of Nazareth uncertain about what to think.When Jesus returned to Nazareth for the first time, He entered the Synagogue and read from the Prophet Isaiah, declaring that the “Spirit of the Lord” was upon Him (cf. Luke 4:18). Mark's version of the event, which we read today, tells us that “many who heard him were astonished.” They asked one another, “‘Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary…?' And they took offense at him” (Mark 6:2–3).Their refusal to believe stemmed not from Jesus but from their inability to reconcile the Jesus they thought they knew—a carpenter, a local boy—with the Jesus who now spoke with divine wisdom and authority. The reaction of the people of Nazareth reveals the danger of clinging to preconceived notions about others, which blinds us to God's presence in the ordinary.When you consider the people with whom you are familiar, do you exhibit a similar tendency? Do you struggle to recognize Christ at work in family members, friends, or even within yourself? Familiarity can make us dismissive, but it also invites us to look more deeply for the divine, even in what appears humble and mundane. We must approach everyone we know with eyes of faith, searching for the presence of Christ, despite their weaknesses and sins. As Jesus reminds us, “Seek and you will find” (Matthew 7:7). This exhortation extends to seeking Christ in the people around us, especially those closest to us.This can be difficult. We are often tempted to focus on faults rather than goodness in others. The tendency is well illustrated in social media. Sensational and shocking posts draw our attention far more than uplifting and inspiring ones. This reveals the fallen human inclination, much like the people of Nazareth, to reject goodness and the deeper truth we are called to see. We often want others to fail as a way of feeling better about ourselves. Among the people of Nazareth, despite Jesus' perfection, those who knew Him allowed their preconceived judgments to blind them, leading to their rejection of Him as the Messiah. This reaction challenges us to examine our own hearts. How often do we fail to recognize Christ's presence in those closest to us? Reflect today on those closest to you and ponder how easily you seek and find Christ in them. Everyone you know—including yourself—is a sinner. It's easy to find fault and dwell on it, even sometimes when there is no fault to be found—such as with Jesus at Nazareth. Prayerfully reject that fallen human tendency and embrace the mission of seeking Christ in others, for “the one who seeks, finds.” Seek Jesus everywhere and celebrate the Good News of His ongoing presence in our world, especially in the lives of those with whom you are most familiar. My omnipresent Lord, You reveal Yourself to me in countless ways—through the Sacraments, Your holy Word, and the lives of those around me, especially those closest to me. Grant me the grace to seek You each day with faith and love, that I may find You in the hearts and actions of those You have placed in my life. As the nation of Israel begins their journey into the wilderness, they find themselves without food and water, but rather than turn to the Lord, they complain to Moses. The Lord graciously provides for his people despite their grumbling, giving them, not only food and water, but a moral code by which they might live; this Decalogue, more commonly known as the Ten Commandments, allowed Israel to know how they could live a life that pleased the Lord. Rather than trying to act like Jesus, we need to let Him live in and through us, acknowledging Him as our Lord, not just our Savior. Jesus comes to live inside of us when we become Christians, but more than a ticket to Heaven, it's about letting Him be more and more Himself in our lives.

And everyone is included, even those we think are far beyond the pale of God's love. Don't call unclean what I have made clean is the message Peter was given. And Cornelius, in Peter's estimation, prior to this moment, would have been unclean. Even though Cornelius was a good man. As soon as Peter walks in the door, this good man was ready to fall down and worship Peter. Good people are falling down and worshiping the wrong things all the time. But God is revealing himself to good people everywhere. And the answer for all people, good or bad, is not, "Here's a list of good things that you must do in order to be made right with God." No, it's not transactional that way. It's not, "If you do this, then God will do that." No, it is a declaration of what God has done on behalf of all of humanity, good people included. It's not a sales pitch. It's good news and it's for everyone. And it must be proclaimed to everyone, even those you might think are unclean and far from God. That's what Peter is learning, and that's what is being declared. So let's be renewed in this gospel, this gospel of Jesus, this message of what God has done for us in Christ. Let's walk in his transforming power. He is the one who makes good people, new people; broken people, healed people; unclean people, clean people; and dead people, alive. He has done it all, and it is finished. That's the gospel, and it's for everyone, even me and you. So let's walk in it today. Let's rejoice in that today. And whatever appointment God has for you, be ready to respond. He's impartial, and his message envelops everyone. And you never know what miracle might be on its way. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see that. That I'll root myself in this declaration of what is—and what is, my friend, is really good. And that's a prayer for my own soul. That's a prayer for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Day 2789 – A Sacrifice, A Savior, a Sword – Luke 2:21-38 Putnam Church Message – 12/28/2025 Luke's Account of the Good News - “A Sacrifice, A Savior, a Sword”   Last week, we continued our year-long study of Luke's Narrative of the Good News in a message titled: “The Nativity Revisited – Love Came Down.” This week is the final Sunday of 2025 – in some ways, it flew by in a flash, but in others, it has been a very long year. Today, we find the newborn Christ eight days old, and he is taken to the temple for circumcision and naming of the child, as every devout Hebrew did. Today's passage is the story of “A Sacrifice, A Savior, a Sword.” Our Core verses for this week are Luke 2:21-38, found on page 1591 of your Pew Bibles. Jesus Presented in the Temple  21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived. 22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c] 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31     which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” 33 The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul, too.” 36

Through our relationship with Jesus, we possess the ability to live with joy, regardless of our circumstances. While the world around us may be falling apart, feeling defeated, and living in despair, Christians have the blessing of choosing to live with joy.Main Points:1. How does this happen? How can you be joyful when life isn't going well? It's here we often confuse joy with happiness. They are not the same thing. Happiness is the result of having a good set of circumstances. Joy is different. Joy is God-given. It's not natural, it's supernatural. In Galatians chapter five, we learn that joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.2. We experience joy as we abide daily with Jesus. Remember, He is the source of our joy! If you want joy, spend time with him. Joy is the result of being with Jesus. As you experience the fulfillment of His presence, joy remains.3. Read OnlineThere was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” Immediately her flow of blood dried up. Mark 5:25–29According to Jewish law, the condition from which this woman suffered rendered her ritually unclean, which excluded her from both religious and social life, causing her to endure not only physical suffering but also psychological and emotional isolation (cf. Leviticus 15:25–27). This isolation, while difficult, reflected the Mosaic Law's intent to teach Israel about the holiness of God and the need for purification to approach Him.Her condition symbolically reflects the spiritual affliction of sin—an incurable state that separates humanity from God and others. By permitting her suffering, God prepared the way for His glory to be revealed through her healing. Her humble yet bold act of faith—reaching out to touch the cloak of Christ—teaches us to trust in God's power and mercy. Her suffering was permitted, not as punishment, but as an opportunity for God to manifest His saving power. Through her faith, she not only received physical healing, but also restoration to her community and a share in God's glory.This Gospel invites us to see ourselves in this woman. Spiritually speaking, her condition mirrors our state when burdened by sin, which causes an interior isolation and separates us from God's family. Sin ultimately leaves us dissatisfied and alienated. Like the woman's healing, our restoration requires a humble act of faith, reaching out to Christ in the sacraments, where His grace heals and restores us.Beyond sin, we all face various afflictions—physical, emotional, or relational—that can weigh us down. In these moments, it is natural to seek immediate relief. Yet this Gospel reminds us that God's plan for our lives often includes permitting suffering for a time to bring about a greater good. The woman's twelve years of affliction were not in vain; they became the means through which God revealed His glory and brought her into deeper communion with Him. Similarly, our sufferings—whether caused by sin, physical ailments, or rejection—are opportunities for God to manifest His saving power, if we approach Him with trust and humility.Believing these truths can indeed be difficult, especially when we are in the midst of suffering. In such moments, we must rely on the gift of supernatural hope, which is borne of grace and sustains us when human strength falters. Hope is rooted in the certitude of faith, and faith opens our hearts to truths that transcend the limitations of human reason (cf. Hebrews 11:1). This humble woman exemplifies both faith and hope in the face of suffering. Her unwavering belief in Jesus' power to heal not only inspired her to hope but also moved her to act. Her hope compelled her to reach out and touch His garment, trusting that even the slightest connection to Christ could bring her healing. By this simple yet profound act of faith, she received far more than physical healing—she encountered the transformative power of God's mercy and love, which restored her fully and brought her into deeper communion with Him. Reflect today on the example of this holy and humble woman. Her act of faith inspires us to approach Christ with humble confidence, especially in moments of suffering and need. Like her, we are called to humble ourselves, reach out to Jesus in prayer, and trust in His power to spiritually heal and restore. In the sacraments, particularly Reconciliation and the Eucharist, we touch the hem of Christ's garment and encounter the transformative power of His mercy. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He's still there. The book is called Acts of the Apostles, and we're going to see a lot of the apostles in the days ahead, especially Paul and Peter. But the person we're going to see the most is Jesus. This book could be called the Acts of Jesus because he's still there with his followers, doing what he always does. But now he's moving beyond Israel and is outside the city of Damascus. He's about to do those things that we've seen him do. He's about to overwhelm one of his enemies with light and forgiveness and love. He'll blind Saul and transform him into Paul. He's on his way up into another upper room where people are mourning the loss of a generous-hearted woman named Tabitha. Peter's there in that room for sure. But the writer of this book doesn't want you to miss the fact that Jesus is there too. If this moment sounds familiar, it should, because it echoes back to Jesus in an upper room, the room of Jairus, the synagogue ruler, with his twelve-year-old daughter, a girl Jesus called Talitha. Both Tabitha and Talitha had passed from life to death. He's still doing what he always does. He's bringing life where there was once death. And he's here with us today too, doing now what he has always done. He's overwhelming our resistant hearts with his light, forgiveness, and love, opening eyes to see more and more just who he is, the way he did with Paul. He's also entering into the upper rooms of our hearts where there is death and a need for resurrection and hope. There he takes us by the hand and says words like, it's time to get up. It's time to live. He's still there doing what he does. He's bringing his light and forgiveness and love. And he's doing this all around the world, even today. In fact, he's in the room with you right now. Do you hear him? Do you sense his presence? Hear his word of forgiveness and light and love? Let him take you by the hand and raise you up to new life. Today. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Why We Build Arks When We are Saved By Grace by Autumn Dickson Moses 7 is powerful. There is so much. I have so many thoughts, but let's keep it to a few. One of those thoughts came to me while reading this verse. Moses 7:43 Wherefore Enoch saw that Noah built an ark; and that the Lord smiled upon it, and held it in his own hand; but upon the residue of the wicked the floods came and swallowed them up. Noah and his family were surrounded by wickedness and danger. They built an ark, and the Lord protected them. The rest of the people were wiped out by the flood. I want to draw your attention to two details. Noah built an ark, and the Lord held it in His hand. There is a type in this. Let's talk about one of my favorite subjects: grace and works. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is frequently attacked for not being Christian because we believe that we will be judged by our works and desires and not just by whether we believe in the right Jesus. Other Christians believe that it's just about accepting the Savior, not following Him. They believe that you don't have to do anything. Some believe that if you try to do anything, you're only taking away from His glory (or so I've been told by some of my friends; I recognize that there are nuanced beliefs within the Christian faith in general). I know others believe that it's all about belief and works simply follow belief, but the works are just not necessary. It is extremely important to note that Latter-day Saints believe 100% in grace. We believe that works are necessary, but works don't save us. Christ saves us. Works are necessary, but they perform a different function, not saving As I read the bible, over and over and over and over and over I get the message that the Lord does require works even if it's not ultimately the works that do the saving. There are places in the bible that more directly teach this concept, namely in the letters of Paul, but there is also story after story after story that teaches this principle. Noah and the ark is just one of these stories. Noah and the ark can teach us about how Christ does the saving, and it teaches us about why the Lord requires works and will judge us by our works. What do we learn from Noah's story? How does Noah's story teach us about grace and works? Let's talk about it. First of all, let's look at it before Noah even builds the ark. The Lord saved Noah and his family because they were righteous. There is a type in this. Noah and his family weren't perfect, but they were righteous. And even though they loved God, it didn't save them. It just meant that God saved them. Would God have saved them if they hadn't built the ark? My personal opinion is no. Why would He command Noah to build an ark if He didn't actually care whether Noah built it? Let's look more specifically at Noah and the ark and not everyone who died in the flood. Our verse teaches us that the Lord held Noah's ark in His hand. That's the grace right there. The Lord protected Noah. The Lord saved Noah. The verse could have said, “Noah obeyed God and built the ark, and it saved him.” But that's not what it said because that's not what Latter-day Saints believe. In fact, it doesn't even specifically say that God looked upon Noah, smiled at him, and saved him. It very specifically says that God looked at “it,” as in, the ark. God looked at the works of Noah. The works didn't save Noah, but God looked at the works, judged them as good and smiled at them, and saved Noah. If God is the one who saved Noah, then why did He have him build an ark? Why perform works? That's the million dollar question for Latter-day Saints. We believe that we are saved by grace, 100%. So why build an ark? Why do we believe in doing our best and performing works if the ark doesn't do the saving? It's because God has to judge. He has to judge who will destroy heaven and who will be able to appreciate heaven and preserve it. He could have saved all the wicked by smiling at them and holding them in his hand, but the wicked would have destroyed heaven. They would have made it as miserable as they were making the earth with their violence and idolatry. They wouldn't have been able to enjoy heaven because of their choices, because of their works. Beyond that, they would have ruined heaven. Our works don't save us, but God judges us by our works and saves us accordingly. That's what Noah's story is teaching us. The works don't save us; they just allow us to appreciate heaven and preserve it. They determine whether God steps in with the atonement of Jesus Christ, saves us, and brings us back into our heavenly home. So do Latter-day Saints believe that we are saved by works? No. We believe we are judged by them, but we believe that Christ does the saving with His atonement. I think parents of addicts understand this more than most. If you have a child who is extremely addicted to dangerous drugs, you don't keep bringing them back into your home just because they love you. They would destroy your home and any heavenly feelings that reside there. Even if you have the power to keep taking care of everything despite their addiction, I would hope that you wouldn't bring them back in to destroy everything (unless God says differently, listen to Him for specifics). If you do choose to bring them back in, then it's not home anymore. It's not heaven so no one really got saved anyway. So you make a judgment call. You pray your guts out for the child. You love the child, but you separate the child because of their works. You judge their works and preserve the home. If they repent and truly change, then they get to come back home. Not because of their works. Quitting drugs doesn't pay for the house; it just makes it so that you trust them enough to bring them home. I think it's important to also note that not everyone's ark looks the same. That's one of the beautiful things about the atonement of Jesus Christ. It removed the absolute justice that kept us from heaven. It enabled Christ to be the judge and save who He decides to save. Some of us will build an ark. Some of us will look at the barren desert before us and be lucky to build a canoe, but you know what? The Lord judges perfectly. He looks at your entire situation and what you have, and He judges perfectly. I testify that the Lord saves us with His grace. I testify that your ark is not enough to save you. I testify that even though your ark can't save you, it builds you and God judges you by your circumstances and your ark and determines whether you're going to contribute to our heavenly home. I testify that the relationship of works and grace is taught all throughout the bible. Autumn Dickson was born and raised in a small town in Texas. Day 2788 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 109:1-5 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2788 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day two thousand seven hundred eighty-eight of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The tile for today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Courtroom of Lies – When Love is Repaid with Hatred Today, we are stepping off the mountain peak of victory and descending into the deepest, darkest valley of the human experience. We are beginning our journey through Psalm One Hundred Nine, and today we will navigate the opening complaint, verses one through five, in the New Living Translation. To understand the emotional whiplash of the Psalter, we have to remember where we just were. In our previous trek through Psalm One Hundred Eight, we stood with King David on the mountaintop. He was the confident Warrior Poet. He woke the dawn with his song. He looked at the map of the nations and declared, "With God's help we will do mighty things, for he will trample down our foes." It was a psalm of absolute certainty, military strength, and divine conquest. We left feeling invincible. But today, the music changes. The triumphant horns of Psalm One Hundred Eight fade away, replaced by the dissonant, scratching sound of a lawsuit. Psalm One Hundred Nine is famous—or perhaps infamous—as the most intense of the "imprecatory" or cursing psalms. Later in this psalm, David will unleash a torrent of curses against his enemy that makes many modern readers cringe. But before we get to the curses, we must understand the pain that birthed them. We must sit in the defendant's chair. In these opening five verses, David is not the General commanding an army; he is a man alone in a courtroom, surrounded by a mob of liars. He has been stripped of his reputation, betrayed by those he loved, and—most terrifying of all—he is facing the silence of God. This is a psalm for anyone who has ever been slandered. It is for anyone who has loved someone deeply, only to have that love thrown back in their face as hatred. It is the raw, unedited cry of a heart that has been stabbed in the back. So, let us enter the courtroom and hear the plea of the innocent. The first segment is: The Silence of the Judge: The Crisis of Communication. Psalm One Hundred Nine: verse one. O God, whom I praise, don't stand silent and aloof The psalm opens with a desperate appeal to the only One who matters. "O God, whom I praise..." Literally, "O God of my praise." This is a statement of history and identity. David is saying, "Lord, You are the subject of all my songs. I have spent my life building a throne of praise for You. I have defined myself by Your glory." It is an appeal to relationship. He is reminding God, "We are friends. I am Your worshiper." But this intimacy makes the current situation unbearable: "...don't stand silent and aloof." The Hebrew simply says, "Do not be silent."
