 Looks very controversial but it works…A female computer scientist analyzed online dating at OkCupid from 10 Millions of daters.She analyzed all of the successful dating conversations between 2013 and 2018: 1.) 61% of conversations take place between an older man and a younger woman, and in almost half of them, the age gap is at least five years older. 2.) The older-woman-younger-man combo is significantly rarer (appearing in less than one-third of all conversations), and in only 12% of these is the woman at least five years older.3.) Men start 80% of conversations on OkCupid, and they tend to message younger women. The older men get the women, so younger the women are 4.) Women, on the other hand, message and respond most often to men about their own age. Once they reach 35, women actually respond more often to younger guys. But because men are usually the conversation starters, the older-man-younger-woman paradigm prevails.5.)But when women message men, they're actually more likely to get a response from younger men than they are from older ones. A 40-year-old woman will have better luck messaging a 25-year-old man (60% reply rate)   than a 55-year-old one (36% reply rate), according to the data. And a 30-year-old man is more likely to respond to a message from a 50-year-old woman than to a message from any other age group. When women make the first move, the age gap dating norm is reversed.For instance: Trevor, a 28-year-old mathematician,  “Well to be honest,” said Trevor, “I usually go for older women. They have more interesting jobs and hobbies, and their profiles are just better… no stupid selfie-only profiles.”For instance me. La faute à l'éclatement de la bulle liée au Covid-19. « Les fonds spéculatifs sont tombés amoureux des applications de rencontre, les investisseurs feraient mieux de garder leurs distances », prévenait le très sérieux Financial Times le 19 septembre. On parle pourtant d'un marché mondial estimé à près de 10 milliards de dollars en 2022 et à qui certains analystes prédisaient une croissance de 7 % par an jusqu'à la fin de la décennie. Après tout, il y a plus de 2 milliards de célibataires dans le monde, chez les jeunes adultes c'est même un tiers des femmes et deux tiers des hommes. Depuis l'an dernier la majorité de la planète est équipée d'un smartphone. Les planètes Mars, Vénus et Mercure semblaient donc alignées : il y a d'ailleurs de plus en plus d'applications de rencontre : Tinder, Grindr, Bumble, OkCupid, Hitch... pour les plus connues. Chaque frange de la population désormais à la sienne, il y a des applis de niche pour les musulmans, les juifs, les chrétiens, pour les diasporas africaines, les conservateurs, les libéraux, les écolos et jusqu'aux fermiers américains. Que vous cherchiez l'âme sœur ou la compagnie d'un soir, il y a forcément une application pour vous.Le marché a largement profité du Covid-19, lorsque pour tenter de maîtriser la pandémie les gouvernements du monde entier ont imposé des confinements et des couvre-feux ; les bars, les restaurants et les salles de spectacles sont restés parfois fermés pendant des mois. Soudain privés de lieux de sociabilisation, les célibataires se sont massivement tournés vers les applications de rencontre. Le groupe Match, le leader du marché qui possède Tinder et une dizaine d'autres marques, a vu le nombre de ses utilisateurs payants passer de 13 millions début 2020 à près de 17 millions fin 2022.Le groupe Match, leader du marché, a vu sa valeur diviser par 5 en 3 ansMais depuis, on assiste à un retour de bâton post pandémie. De la même manière que le télétravail est redevenu l'exception, les célibataires du monde entier ont recommencé à se rencontrer dans la vraie vie, la bulle a éclaté et le nombre d'utilisateurs payants ne cesse de baisser. Tinder l'application la plus utilisée dans le monde a perdu 8% de ses utilisateurs payants au deuxième trimestre de cette année. Résultat : les actions en Bourse se sont effondrées : à son pic en 2021, le groupe Match était évalué à près de 50 milliards de dollars. Aujourd'hui il vaut 5 fois moins. L'action de son concurrent Bumble a elle perdu 90% de sa valeur depuis son entrée en Bourse en 2021. C'est ce qui explique l'entrée agressive au capital de plusieurs groupes de fonds d'investissement mentionnés par le FT. Mais on assiste là plus à des manœuvres de fonds vautour venus qu'à des investissements de long terme.Il y a également un paradoxe propre aux applications de rencontre : le service qu'elles vendent a vocation à leur faire perdre des clients. Même si ça n'est pas une règle de vie absolue, la majorité des clients de ces applis cherchent à rencontrer quelqu'un qui leur donnera envie de se désinscrire. Dans le monde des affaires, on appelle ça le « churn », l'attrition en bon français, c'est-à-dire la proportion de clients qui arrêtent d'utiliser votre produit.
