This month we're back to the mid 80s to talk about our favourite songs of 1986, including thrash metal classics, proto-industrial stompers, enormous pop bangers, massive cheesy 80s soundtrack rock and loads more. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - a-ha, The Art Of Noise ft Max Headroom, Big Black, The Bolshoi, Bon Jovi, Billy Bragg, Stan Bush, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Crowded House, Cutting Crew, Europe, The Go-Betweens, Bruce Hornsby & The Range, The Housemartins, Hüsker Dü, In The Nursery, Iron Maiden, KMFDM, Kenny Loggins, Merzbow, Metallica, New Order, Public Image Ltd, R.E.M., Lionel Richie, Shub Niggurath, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Slayer, The Smiths, & They Might Be Giants.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2SmV87RMDnpidlUpn4m7lU?si=Ssrrhy8iRtCgFXSP9-QXug&pi=p67BZNXETwqB5Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. 2024 is in it's final days and as is traditional it's time for us to talk aout all of the fantastic music released this year. This year Tracey & Colin have been on board with Charli XCX's Brat summer, while Ian has pretty much avoided it entirely while he's been rocking out to masked Hardcore bands with salsa rhythms. Next week we are talking about r-dropping accents - accents that say cah for car and so on, often found in British accents, and so we hunted down a real live British person to talk to about the British accent. That person is Matt from the podcast Pick a Disc. On Matt's podcast, each episode a guest tells Matt about an album they love, and they have a nice chat about it that is insightful, funny, and highly listenable. I love this podcast. We're back, and this time we've gone back 4 whole decades to talk about our favourite songs from 1984, including lots of jazzy indiepop, metal (from extreme to hair), german pop, and the mystery of whether Lionel Richie or Prince's girlfriend keep phoning Rockwell. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -The Blue Nile, Billy Bragg, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Celtic Frost, Cocteau Twins, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, Julian Cope, Dio, Echo & The Bunnymen, Everything But The Girl, Husker Du, Iron Maiden, Killing Joke, Kenny Loggins, Manowar, Metallica, Nena, Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder, Prefab Sprout, Prince, The Psychedelic Furs, Ratt, Lionel Richie, Rockwell, Sandie Shaw, The Smiths, Swansway, Thompson Twins, Ultravox, and Van Halen!Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7JDSRATZtdBU5yJtD4zbFM?si=256411ee4df7417aFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. This week Zach is joined by Matt Latham from Pick A Disc to discuss the one hundred eighty second episode of Smallville, “Pandora." They talk how this episode lines up continuity-wise with "Savior," the Kandorians using a red sun to both give themselves powers and take away Clark's, Lois not figuring out that Clark is The Blur, and the unintended implications of these memories from the future being from Lois' POV. We could all die tomorrow, so listen to the latest Always Hold On To Smallville today!Check out Matt's podcast Pick A Disc.EPISODE ROUNDUPZach's Grade: C-Tricia's Grade: C-IMDB Grade: 8.8Superman Homepage Grade: 1/5 Bechdel Test: FAILSERIES TALLY BOARD...From Metropolis: 17Amazing Technicolor Kryptonite: 15Amnesia Count: 69 Blue Shirt/Red Jacket: 89Chloe's Unseen Connections: 29Clark Loses His Powers: 15Episode Title Said In Episode: 73Hospital Visits: 141In Media Res: 7Injection Count: 54Kent Truck Accidents: 10KOs to Keep Clark's Secret: 56KOs to Keep Oliver's Secret: 3Lana Kills: 7Let's Do The Time Warp Again: 9Lois Arm Punches: 10Lois' Costume Closet: 11Main Character Deaths: 23Mind Control Count: 25Movie Plot As An Episode: 21Not The Last Son Of Krypton: 45Possession Count: 27Product Placement Pete: 30Queen Airways: 8Shirtless Oliver: 9Shower Count: 23Shut It Down: 10Shut That Laptop: 33Smallville High School Faculty Deaths: 5Smallville High School Student Deaths: 17Under The Influence: 37Wakes Up Tied Up: 11Weddings: 4"You Weren't Yourself": 37Always Hold On To Smallville is brought you to by listeners like you. They take a look at this treasured TV show from their childhood, share memories, discuss whether the other host has heard of it, rewatch a few episodes and then discuss how it hold up with the hope that it does and that it doesn't hit them... right in the childhood! Mark's guest this month is Matt Latham from the Shipwrecked & Comatose and Pick A Disc podcasts, and he's chosen ReBoot: the pioneering computer generated Sci-Fi show that started in 1994. It's time for another Now Playing episode while we recalibrate the time machine ready for our next batch of episodes so we're taking the time to sit back and talk about albums we're listening to a lot at the moment. All three records this time are inspired by bands we've discussed over the last few episodes and while all three albums are very different, there are definitely similar themes throughout them (mainly them all being a bit goth). Colin has chosen American Alt rock supergroup A Perfect Circle's debut record Mer De Noms from 2000. Ian has also gone for a 2000 release with Norweigan Experimental Electronica band Ulver's 5th album Perdition City, & Tracey has picked English Art Pop legends Japan & their 1981 swansong Tin DrumYou can listen to the A Perfect Circle record here - https://open.spotify.com/album/0GeWd0yUKXHbCXVag1mJvO?si=LpINo9SFSxWolfI0rsMnpghere's the Ulver album - https://open.spotify.com/album/34GSeS7UvvKclKHIXohqjP?si=3qgfk1l2Saan8we1RcmWpAand here's Japan's 80s masterpiece - https://open.spotify.com/album/71R4tl3qYgZVvdlwE7Fxs6?si=6UX35WCrRAqfILRDVf0ROwAs always, if you enjoy the music please consider supporting the artists by buying their records etc.Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsSay hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast We're part of the We Made This podcast network.
