Welcome to another episode of the Geek Freaks Podcast! In this session, hosts Frank and Jonathan dive deep into the psychology of fictional resistance, analyze the gritty evolution of a fan-favorite Sith, and discuss why the upcoming He-Man movie is embracing its vibrant roots. Episode Summary Are we living in an Empire? Frank and Jonathan kick off the show by questioning our fascination with fictional rebellions. From the underground movements in The Handmaid's Tale and Star Trek to the reality-shattering resistance of The Matrix, we break down which groups actually stand a chance. We also provide a full reaction to the Maul: Shadow Lord trailer, exploring Dave Filoni's darker shift in Star Wars animation. Finally, we look at the meta-fantasy world of the new Masters of the Universe film and share our latest HBO watchlist recommendations including Hacks and The Pit. Timestamps and Topics 00:00:00 – Intro, Question of the Week: Rebels in fiction we cheer for . 00:04:23 – Quick real-life check-in and keeping it together through a stressful news cycle . 00:05:08 – Star Wars: Maul: Shadow Lord trailer reaction and what the POV shift could mean . 00:11:13 – Masters of the Universe trailer talk, Jared Leto as Skeletor, tone, and first impressions . 00:16:29 – God of War series update: Cast talk, what fans should expect, and where the show could land. 00:22:05 – Fable showcase reaction: Humor, vibe, and why this reboot could work. 00:26:48 – Marvel's Wonder Man spotlight: Who he is, why he matters, and what the show might be going for. 00:39:58 – Release-week plan for Wonder Man and quick network updates. 00:42:48 – Weekly recommendations: Starfleet Academy, Hacks, and The Pit. 00:45:06 – Wrap-up. Key Takeaways Effective Rebellion: Jonathan argues that "The Dawn" from The Handmaid's Tale is a superior rebel group due to their infiltration tactics, whereas the Maquis were too easily dismantled. The Maul Evolution: The upcoming Shadow Lord series aims for a darker, "Rated R" feel, focusing on Maul's pursuit of freedom through the criminal underworld rather than the Jedi/Sith binary. Critique of the Jedi: The hosts discuss how the Jedi Order often pursued "control" under the guise of "balance," making Maul's perspective more relatable to some viewers. Embracing the Vibrant: Unlike many "dark and gritty" reboots, the new Masters of the Universe is leaning into the colorful, fun, and meta aspects of the original 80s property. Memorable Quotes "When did we vote for the Empire? Why did we end up this way?" – Frank "The Dawn... they are so well embedded. They're very sneaky." – Jonathan "The Jedi Order is not perfect either... the balance they were pursuing was not balance. It was control." – Jonathan "Justice comes at the tip of a lightsaber." – Frank Call to Action If you enjoyed this deep dive, please subscribe and leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform! Send us a textThe YardsA family crime drama set in New York City with a sick mother, ambivalently abusive father figure, and nudity along with a role for Domenick Lombardozzi (The Wire's Herc)? Get out your James Gray bingo cards, because Season 16 Gray Poop On (working title) persists with TGTPTU continuing in Episode 3 its temporal pincer movement covering the auteur's second film THE YARDS (2000).  Filmed on film in the spring and summer of 1998 but due to studio delays and reshoots not released until the fall of 2000, The Yards stars the still up-and-coming Mark Walburg as Leo Handler just out of jail and being led back into a life of crime by Joaquin Phoenix as Willie Gutierrez, the guy dating and soon betrothed to Leo's cousin and possible love interest Erica Soltz played by a pre-Monster Charlize Theron. This trio of rising stars is supported by a trio of 70s hall of famers (James Caan, Ellen Burstyn, and Faye Dunaway) in a story about NYC train maintenance, government corruption, family loyalties, and the need for proper bannisters.    Cowritten with Matt Reeves (opinions vary) and shot with multiple POV characters, Gray would find the story in the editing room (and subsequent reshoots) by winnowing it down to Walburg's singular perspective only to have that story mollified (or straight-up mauled from Gray's perspective) by a studio-noted happier ending.   This ep, you won't be getting Ken's half-hour discussion with Ryan about Theron's surprising nude scene, but Thomas will provide context for international and homeschool listeners in the U.S., Myanmar, and Liberia. Thank you for choo-choo-choosing to listen. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Send us a textWhat happens when your biggest lead source vanishes overnight? We dig into that turning point with Austin Armstrong—CEO of Syllaby, co-founder of AI Marketing World Conference, best-selling author, and creator with 4M+ followers—to unpack how to turn volatile attention into a durable business. From the TikTok ban that exposed platform risk to the systems that now power his growth, Austin shows why views don't pay the bills unless you build the pipes behind them.We get specific about trust and community: how a sharp personal brand, consistent value, and real conversations in the comments transform casual viewers into advocates. Austin breaks down the series playbook that's driven billions of organic views—repeatable hooks, swappable middles, and clear CTAs that invite binge behavior across platforms. You'll hear practical examples, from “ChatGPT secrets you should know” to “real or fake” formats that educate and entertain while feeding search and playlist discovery.AI takes center stage as a force multiplier, not a replacement. Austin shares how Syllabi surfaces trending topics, generates scripts, produces videos with modern models, and schedules across social, helping teams blanket their niche with relevance. We draw the line between what to automate and what to own: let AI handle the tedious production and distribution; keep humans on POV storytelling and authentic engagement. We also tackle ethics head-on, calling out fake AI UGC and avatar “reviews” as trust killers that invite regulatory trouble. If you've wondered how to balance short-form reach with long-form depth, or how a modern CMO can use time inventories to buy back hours for strategy, this conversation offers a clear blueprint. Expect actionable frameworks, candid pitfalls, and a renewed focus on systems, trust, and ethical leverage. Topics:“99% Right Is 100% Wrong” MindsetMaximizing Outcomes in a Sale ProcessPost-Close Seller Regrets...and so much more.Top TakeawaysMake your first deals your brand. Matt emphasizes that early deals define how the market sees you and become proof of your standards and the caliber of clients you can win. That's why it pays to set a clear bar for what you'll take on: deal quality, counterparty strength, and your ability to run a clean process.Build an advisory board with a clear purpose. Matt notes that advisory boards only create value when you're clear on what you want from them At Edgeview, advisors were brought in for credibility, introductions, and high-level guidance. That clarity kept the relationship lightweight and efficient. Decide early whether you need a stamp-of-approval and network board with periodic check-ins or an operator board that requires heavy preparation and greater accountability.Private business owners: not every great outcome is a sale. The best path forward might be a recap, a minority partner, or a keep-and-grow strategy with the right buyer. Before going to market, owners should align on liquidity needs, legacy goals, leadership succession, and employee impact. That clarity reframes value from price alone to after-tax outcomes and long-term fit.Mid-level bankers: don't get stuck as “the execution person.” If you don't build a revenue lane, you'll never leave the trenches. The bankers who create real leverage carve out a clear wedge—a vertical, sponsor set, buyer niche, or unique POV—and spend real time developing deal flow and ideas, not just executing.About Matt SalisburyMatt Salisbury has built, scaled, and exited two successful investment banking firms over a 25+ year career, advising on 100+ M&A and strategic transactions primarily for private business owners. Matt launched EVP Strategic Advisors to focus on helping entrepreneurs navigate complex strategic decisions with clarity and confidence.About EVP Strategic AdvisorsEVP Strategic Advisors is a boutique advisory firm dedicated exclusively to privately held and family-owned businesses. Send us a textA high school writer with jokes that didn't fit the rubric found a mic, a room, and a path. Charlie Cantrell joins us to pull back the curtain on how a careful craftsman became a working New York comic—without losing the nerve to bomb, pivot, and grow. We talk about the early days at the venue on 35th Street, where five-dollar Thursdays and honest tags turned rough ideas into real sets. From there, Charlie walks us through Hampton Roads to Manhattan, why comics often commit to a few rooms instead of chasing every stage, and how the right environment accelerates timing, cadence, and confidence. The craft talk goes deep. Charlie once timed every joke and kept binders with a table of contents; now he mixes that structure with improv to work premises live and find the laugh in the moment. We compare “good laughs” that survive weekends to “bad laughs” that only pop in smoky bar chaos, and we trade war stories about hecklers, empty Sundays during football season, and the weird humility of having your dad drive you to a hostile open mic. It's the unglamorous part of comedy that builds a resilient voice: data from failure, trust earned onstage, and a thicker skin for the next rep.We also explore influence and evolution. Conan O'Brien's silly-smart elasticity, Gary Shandling's authentic introspection, Chris Rock's sharp angles, and Bill Burr's shifting POV inform how Charlie structures bits and paces stories. That leads to today's big question for working comics: when do you burn an hour? We dig into specials, 30-minute formats, and the strategy of building a second hour before releasing the first. Along the way, Charlie shares what acting and improv added to his toolbox—listening, presence, and the freedom to stop chasing a laugh every ten seconds. If you're chasing stand-up, curious about the New York scene, or just love hearing how jokes become sets that actually work, this one's for you. You are about to listen to a mega episode. Charged up and sans guest, we dive deep into a core facet of moviemaking and film-viewing: point of view—the power of films to invisibly place you behind the eyes, and inside the mind, of a specific character. Jumping off from two dynamite script pages, and pulling crucial info from our film studies education, we explore how subjectivity is essentially inescapable as soon as a camera angle is chosen. We also turn our attention to what “objectivity” could possibly mean in a cinematic context, what happens when multiple POV characters collide, and whether we may have found the most perfect pair of socks for a cold weather film set.Coens covered: Barton Fink, Touileries (from Paris, je t'aime), Fargo, A Serious Man, True Grit, Inside Llewyn Davis, Hail, Caesar!, The Gal Who Got Rattled (from Buster Scruggs)Plus: Frankenstein (2025), AmélieWant to join the study group? Send us a textArmageddon TimeThis week in Season 16's Going Gray (working title), Episode 2 will cover the writer-director's 2022 autobiographical film about his Jewish American assimilative upbringing and formative childhood events slightly beyond his ken that will have the potential to lead him to become the legendary director we know today, that same director whose film we are—   Wait, no, you've not heard TGTPTU cover this one. Seriously, no, sorry to contradict, but you're wrong. TGTPTU is not redux-ing the previously covered The Fabelmans (that was Season 14's gimmick). This is Season 16, if you'll let your no-so-humble scribe finish, which covers the directorial work of Gen X filmmaker James Gray, including his deeply personal film that was a stupendous box office failure ARMAGEDDON TIME (2022).   Gray's most recent film is somehow even more personal than his first (just covered in the season's inaugural episode as part of TGTPU's temporal pincer movement), with Armageddon Time set historically in 1980 in time for the election of Ronald Reagan to the U.S. presidency, which may or may not factor more largely into the narrative. With a few noted exceptions by the pod's purist contingent, Gray's focus remains with his POV character Paul. Played by child actor Banks Repeta who, along with Jaylin Webb as his friend Johnny, brings an amazing performance alongside heavyweights Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and Anthony Hopkins as Paul's mother, father, and grandfather respectively and who each will, in their own ways, help the sixth-grade Paul's insights into social inequity and struggles.   Note: Despite its MPAA R rating and the many similarities in plot as raised during the podcast, Gray's most recent film is not a Requiem for a Dream retelling and there is zero ass-to-ass.  This week, Ken has all the feels and appears, despite his graphic novel's striking similarity to Gray's film, to not be pursuing the Harlan Ellison legal route for residuals; Tom's lukewarm; and Ryan's meh. Discussion of these disparate reactions leads to comparison with and exploration of The Fabelmans (2022), Mid90s (2018), and other nostalgic, coming-of-age films by writer-directors in recent years. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

She also reveals her stats (a casual 136 books in 2025), how she uses “palate cleanser” romances, and what she's aiming for in 2026 (more audiobooks, more intentional TBR reading, and donating/unhauling over 100 books).Sara shares her own 2025 buzzy reads (including a couple hard “no's”), highlights a standout cozy fantasy—A Teller of Small Fortunes (Julie Leong). Nicole also convinces Sara to preorder a March release on the spot: Lady Tremaine, a Cinderella retelling from the stepmother's POV.Plus: a full-on book journaling segment, including Nicole's Archer & Olive journal setup, seasonal TBRs, monthly favorites, a “DNF graveyard,” sticker systems, and why journaling counts as reading-adjacent joy (because we support hobbies that require glue).Books mentioned for winter reading include The Ghostwriter (Julie Clark), The Frozen People (Elly Griffiths), and The Land in Winter (Andrew Miller), plus a food-and-memory pairing featuring The Kamogawa Food Detectives and a similar-premise pick, Aftertaste. If you've ever wondered what your reading habits say about you—or you just want permission to be both “deep” and “trash goblin” in the same month—this episode is for you.Question for you: If you asked ChatGPT to analyze your reading taste, what do you hope it would say?

In this Barber's Brief, V and Marc cover the biggest marketing and platform stories from the last couple of weeks—plus introduce a new segment.First up, they unpack why marketers should stop trying to re-label marketing as CapEx, and why misusing finance terms (like ROI) can damage credibility with CFOs. Then they move into search and AI: Google's Danny Sullivan warns publishers not to restructure content into “bite-sized chunks” just to appease AI search—because what works today may not work tomorrow.Next, they revisit Paul Feldwick's classic “message myth” argument: advertising isn't just a rational “message delivery” machine—it's showmanship, emotion, and association-building that shapes preference and memory. Finally, they break down the strategic implications of the Google + Walmart partnership and what it signals about the future of retail discovery, closed-loop measurement, and platform power consolidation.Ad of the Week: Miller Lite starring Christopher Walken, a “masterclass in showing up without shouting,” built around a simple cultural truth: people aren't showing up like they used to—and maybe we should. To close, they preview The Sharp Cut: an upcoming POV episode on one-to-one marketing, mass personalization, and whether the promise is real or overhyped.Listen, share, and stay sharp, everyone!Key TakewaysStop calling marketing “CapEx” to sound finance-savvy. If you misuse accounting language (ROI, CapEx/OpEx), you lose credibility fast—especially with CFOs.Marketing doesn't cleanly fit CapEx logic. Brand value is uncertain, often maintenance-based, and hard to capitalize like a tangible asset.Better move: push for practical governance: separate marketing line items on the P&L, and treat “foundational” work (e.g., rebrand) more like development/R&D where appropriate.Google's warning on AI-era SEO: don't rebuild your site into short “LLM-friendly chunks” just because it may perform temporarily—optimize for humans, not the machine. The “Message Myth” still matters: effective advertising is often less about what it says and more about what it does—creating emotional associations and mental availability.Digital vs. analog communication: boards tend to prefer “digital” (logic, claims, propositions), but “analog” (music, mood, emotion, showmanship) is what drives preference.Google + Walmart = retail discovery power shift. Expect more closed-loop, AI-driven commerce experiences where media, merchandising, and checkout blur together.Ad of the Week insight: sometimes the strongest creative move is restraint—Walken's presence sells “showing up” as a cultural reset, not a hard sell.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Marketing Moments01:14 The Language of Marketing and Finance07:47 Content Strategy in the Age of AI12:51 The Message Myth in Advertising18:57 Google and Walmart's Retail Partnership25:19 Ad of the Week: Miller Lite's Campaign27:43 Upcoming Changes in the PodcastLinks:Marketing is Not CapEx—Stop Saying It Is - https://www.marketingweek.com/marketing-not-capex-ridicule-finance/Google doesn't want you to create bite-sized chunks of your content -...

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 341: Caleb Heymann Cinematographer Caleb Heymann has been a key architect of the Stranger Things aesthetic since the tail end of Season 3. After starting as a second unit DP, Heymann was promoted to lead cinematographer for the blockbuster Season 4, and now its fifth and final season. The crew dedicated a full year to filming Season 5, spanning from January through December 2024. While the desert dreamscape was captured on location in New Mexico, the bulk of production remained in Atlanta. Seasons 4 and 5 traverse a variety of locations, each requiring vastly different palettes. Heymann views each environment within the Stranger Things universe as a "cinematic playground." To ground the show's supernatural elements, the production leans heavily on location shooting and in-camera effects. “There are definitely certain anachronistic visual elements that we wanted to pay homage to,” says Heymann. “The lightning can be a little over the top. It intentionally rides that line between expressive and theatrical. But I think we try to not overdo it, because everything in front of the camera is already taking you there.” The production constantly balanced both digital and physical effects. “We always try to push it and see what we can get in camera. The art department does an incredible job and builds us huge sets,” says Heymann. Creating the Upside Down was a monumental task for the art department, who must redress nearly every location for night shoots. The iconic vines, for instance, are physically constructed by "nether technicians." To make the dimension's signature hellish glow, the crew often used practical red lighting on set rather than relying solely on post-production color grading. Heymann and the Duffer brothers selected a different camera system for each season, choosing cameras that best fit the story's needs. For Season 5, Heymann needed a distinct visual motif to represent Will's "trance state" and the POV of the demogorgons and demo dogs. He stacked two center-spot diopters, which blended the image while losing focus at the edges. To heighten the disorientation, the team shook the camera manually and with a camera shaker on a Technocrane. “It was absolutely a dream experience already being a fan of the show to be able to come in and join this group of awesome people who work on it and to ultimately get to work with the Duffers,” says Heymann. “I learned a lot from them, just in their attention to detail and sensitivity to camera movement. And they're always about pushing everybody to do their best work.” See Stranger Things Season 5 streaming on Netflix. They create space to step back from the constant churn of headlines and talk through what's happening without rushing to conclusions. Will Wright and Josh Burtram use these conversations to think out loud, ask honest questions, and stay focused on clarity rather than reaction. In this episode, we reflect on three developments that raise serious questions about power and accountability. We begin with the U.S. seizure of Venezuela's president and what that action means for constitutional authority, regime change, and America's role in the world. We then turn to growing discussions around Greenland, national security in the Arctic, and how those conversations are being received by U.S. allies. The episode closes with a difficult discussion about the killing of an American citizen during a federal immigration operation in Minnesota. We walk through what is known, what remains unclear, and how quickly public narratives form before investigations are complete.Throughout the conversation, Josh works to frame a Christian perspective shaped by human dignity, restraint, truthfulness, and lament. POV is a space to slow down, think carefully, and keep people at the center when policy decisions carry real human consequences.Support the show

Happy Friday, Readers! This was our first Hot & Bothered episode published almost a year ago on our Patreon, right after we had finished reading Fourth Wing. (Please forgive our general Violet snarkiness.) We have a handful of others H&B episodes we'll be posting on random Fridays, let us know what you think and if you'd like to see more of these.--------------------------------------The theory: some readers can skim past a bad heroine for a vicarious romance with a shadow daddy, while others may DNF a book if they can't relate to the POV. We suspect this might account for the vast discrepancies in ratings in our beloved genre. What do you think? Can you overlook a Violet to get to a Xaden?

Send us a textWe had questions the moment Playdate 2025 opened on a joyless car chase and a baffling lacrosse scene—and then Isla Fisher strolled in with the “Mama Mafia” and Alan Ritchson arrived like a golden retriever with black-ops training. That's the whiplash of this Prime Video action-comedy: when the energy is right, it's hilarious; when the foundation wobbles, even a decent gag falls flat.We break down why the first act muddies everything a comedy needs to thrive—clear relationships, clean stakes, and jokes that sit inside structure. The stepdad-stepkid bond veers from clingy devotion to cold indifference, making the “learning to protect” arc impossible to buy. Then the movie's best ideas surface: coin-sock mayhem at a Chuck E. Cheese knockoff, a killer phone-call bit mid-car-chase, and Stephen Root delivering a masterclass in character POV in under five minutes. We dig into how Ritchson nails a weird tone—sweet, blunt, and physically sharp—while Kevin James never finds the same wavelength.Yes, we get into the clone twist. On paper, it's a playful genre swing that could power the back half. In practice, CGI crowds replace practical chaos, the chase geography collapses, and a sharp final brawl is undercut by shaky-cam that hides the good choreography. And then there's the choice that derails goodwill: the “kaboom” that wipes out a building of clone kids. Dark comedy needs purpose and release; this feels like shock for shock's sake and breaks the one humane thread the movie earns with CJ.We don't just roast—we rebuild. Tighten the stepdad arc, anchor the chase with real geography, keep the coin-sock, bring Mama Mafia back for a third-act save, and swap the finale's cruelty for a convoy of silver vans whisking kids to safety. With a strategic recast and a structural pass, this could have been a tight, rewatchable romp.If you enjoy craft talk—comedy structure, tone management, practical vs CGI, and performances that recalibrate scenes—press play. Then tell us: is Playdate 2025 one smart rewrite away from great, or does the ending lose you for good? Award-winning children's author Ross Montgomery wrote a killer read for grownups after getting inspired by Halley's comet trip over Cornwall in 1910. Deploying the humor and criminal elements he gleaned from watching Clue as a kid, The Murder at World's End delivers a plot twister of a mystery when servants and family members and scientists and lunatics converge at Tithe Hall in anticipation of the apocalypse. Ross discusses his passion for obscure history, the pleasure he got writing for an adult audience (no censoring the swear words!), and the challenges he faced while devising a locked-room mystery from a servant's POV. Bonus: insights into his favorite and most despised characters (and who inspired them!) and a sneak peek at what's next for Miss Decima Stockingham and Stephen Pike.
