California Cherry Industry Suffers One of Its Toughest Seasons in Decades

Farm City Newsday by AgNet West

California cherry growers are facing one of the most difficult seasons in recent memory after multiple spring rain events devastated what had initially appeared to be a promising crop. According to longtime industry veteran Michael Jameson of Morada Produce, the 2026 California cherry season may be the worst he has seen in nearly four decades in the business. Jameson, who has worked in the cherry industry for 38 years, said growers entered the season with optimism. Strong winter chill accumulation, favorable bloom conditions, and excellent fruit set had many expecting an ideal crop of approximately 8.5 to 9 million cartons. That production level is considered optimal for California's harvesting, packing, and marketing infrastructure while also providing profitable returns to growers. However, Mother Nature had other plans. A series of rainstorms struck California cherry-producing regions during critical stages of fruit development. The first major rain event arrived in April, followed by several additional storms that damaged both early- and late-season varieties. According to Jameson, cherries become highly vulnerable once they begin transitioning from green to red. Excess moisture absorbed through the roots and fruit stems can cause cherries to crack when the fruit skin cannot stretch enough to accommodate the additional water. The result was widespread crop damage across multiple growing regions. Jameson noted that San Joaquin County alone experienced estimated losses exceeding 63 percent of its cherry crop, with economic losses reaching approximately $174 million. When factoring in damage across all California cherry-producing districts, total losses likely climbed into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Even fruit that survived the storms presented challenges. Modern optical sorting technology allows packinghouses to identify and remove defective cherries more effectively than in previous decades. While that technology helped salvage portions of the crop, Jameson explained that many cherries still suffered from reduced shelf life due to repeated weather events. Fruit that appeared marketable when packed often deteriorated during transportation to distant markets. That created significant problems throughout the supply chain. Shipments arriving at retailers sometimes failed to meet quality standards, forcing receivers to reject loads. Those rejected loads then had to be diverted to wholesale markets, often resulting in substantial financial losses. Jameson said rejected cherry shipments can cost growers and shippers between $100,000 and $150,000 per load. During this season, some operations experienced multiple rejected loads in a single day. Beyond the financial impact, Jameson expressed concern about the effect on consumers. When shoppers purchase cherries that lack flavor, firmness, or shelf life, they are less likely to return and buy additional fruit. Maintaining consumer confidence is critical for specialty crops like cherries, where repeat purchases drive seasonal demand. Despite the challenges, growers remain committed to producing high-quality fruit and navigating difficult conditions. Jameson emphasized that farming is inherently unpredictable, with weather often determining whether a season becomes highly profitable or financially devastating. For California's cherry industry, 2026 will likely be remembered as a season that tested the resilience of growers, packers, shippers, and marketers alike.

Supply chain technology is evolving rapidly, but cargo criminals are moving even faster. In this episode of Supply Chain Now, Scott W. Luton and Scott DeGroot are joined by Krenar Komoni (Founder & CEO of Tive) and Fernando Boom (Director of Transportation at Venture Metals +) to break down the massive shift from physical yard thefts to sophisticated, identity-based freight fraud. Fernando shares a thrilling firsthand account of how a family road trip turned into a real-time recovery mission for a hijacked $240,000 shipment of copper. While the driver successfully bypassed the physical bolt seals, covert tracking technology thwarted the heist and led to a first-degree felony arrest. Krenar pairs this narrative with over a decade of visibility expertise, unpacking how modern criminals leverage AI, chameleon carriers, fraudulent MC numbers, and double brokering to vanish with high-value freight. Moving past a reactive postmortem claims model, the panel outlines a definitive blueprint for proactive, layered defense. They explore how real-time telemetry, including route deviation alerts and light sensors, empowers logistics teams to stop fraud mid-transit. Scott DeGroot concludes by highlighting the critical enterprise costs of cargo loss, challenging shippers to audit their networks, tighten dock-level verifications, and eliminate the weak links that bad actors exploit. But when one job becomes his only chance to secure a future for himself and his daughter, he's forced to confront a devastating price — one that threatens to pull him back into the darkness he thought he'd escaped. Recorded live at the iconic Roxy Hotel in New York City, Tony sat down with fan‑favorite actor Aleks Paunovic, director Bobby Bala, and members of the creative team to explore the film's emotional core, its world‑building, and the personal stories behind its creation. The pod may have been a little off-schedule over the last month but that's for good reason because I'm trying out a new editorial approach to the show and its taken  more legwork to get to a point where I feel comfortable hitting publish. In May, I scheduled interviews with 8 different companies building AI solutions in logistics. The plan is upload each of those ~30 minute conversations that focus specifically on their product, who it's for and what to expect. Basically an approach of “here's everything I would ask if I was trying to understand and eventually/maybe purchase this software.” We also had some written submissions that I included in a written guide along with companies making moves but I personally didn't interview them for this topic .Because I want CargoRex to be a brand that is successful independent of me being the “voice” of it, I still, and likely will always  want to give my opinion and that home is naturally here. However I think the process needs to be refined where interviews go on one channel and editorial evolves in more narrative/topic based shows that include those interviews where it makes the most sense. I'll still share those interviews here but I think it's important that I drop an episode like this ahead of that to set the tone of how I'm thinking about X topic in logistics. During this new interview process and after learning the real work going into these different AI solutions, I put together a working theory on how the humanoids are already here. How?My theory is most of the public is waiting for the big ~societal crash into AI agents taking over everything~ that's turned into fear mongering. Companies simply over-hired, were run inefficiently, and the free money dried up. Businesses had to grow up, cut costs, and get lean. They blame “AI” but in reality, these companies just had bad processes and failed attempts to adopt AI solutions gave them a chance to blame a boogeyman. When you move past the noise and dig a little deeper you can see logistics is doing what it always does: improving that source to porch journey second by second. These solutions aren't promising the world on a silver platter, but they are committed to creating solutions for specific use cases that requires a human's expertise that is powered by information + insight to be creative with their problem solving. You can listen to the full interviews over on the CargoRex YouTube channel (links below) along with our in-depth Cargorex.io guide with all the companies interviewed, quoted, and featured.I'm really proud to hit publish on this new editorial direction and I hope you'll find value in it. In this episode:How autonomous trucks are filling routes drivers don't want, not replacing driversThe 3-hour report that now takes 15 seconds, and what analysts do with that timeWhy AI is the new boogeyman when bad data and worse processes are the real problemThe trust layer: audit logs, human-in-the-loop phases with defined endpoints, and why demos aren't deploymentsWhat nobody talks about: AI burnout, and what happens when every minute of your day becomes the hard stuffBuild vs. buy: $1.2 million in savings came from solving the right problems, not building everything from scratchToken management as an operational cost, and the Uber cautionary taleWatch this episode on YouTubeFind the full AI Use Cases in Logistics Guide over on the CargoRex website——————————————————Full Interviews available on the new CargoRex YouTube Channel: 1. The Soviet Union used Lend-Lease to "plunder" American technology, including entire Ford factories and suitcases of blueprints guarded by NKVD agents. Harry Hopkins personally intervened to facilitate the shipment of specialized chemicals and enriched uranium to the USSR. Sean McMeekin notes that while some officials like Harry Dexter Whitewere identified as NKVD agents, Hopkins acted as a devoted "agent of influence," routinely overruling ambassadors like Averell Harriman when they attempted to exert leverage over these transfers. Hopkins ensured that the flow of vital resources remained unconditional, viewing Stalin's interests as his own and outmaneuvering anyone who raised concerns. (7/8)UNDATED BAKU

Managing Cattle & Grass In A Drought It is that time of year that many producers are moving cattle to summer grazing.  But drought is plaguing many and it continues to worsen.  According to drought.gov, as of May 5th, 60.92% of the country is experiencing moderate to exceptional drought, largely concentrated in the Southeast, High Plains, and West. There are strategies for managing drought, or I should say how we manage grass and forage uptake in the cowherd to get through drought.  Trevor Burian from Killdeer North Dakota joins us today.  Trevor has been a student of grazing, plant management, regenerative ag, and cattle efficiency and profitability his entire life. Cattle Industry News Tyson's Multi-Million-Dollar Beef Settlement A federal judge granted preliminary approval to a proposed $47 million class action settlement between Tyson Foods and commercial and institutional indirect purchaser plaintiffs in the ongoing cattle and beef antitrust litigation. An order filed in the middle of last week approved preliminary certification of a settlement class covering entities in the United States that indirectly purchased certain raw beef products sold by defendants between Jan. 1, 2015, and May 6, 2026, for use in commercial food preparation.  The settlement involves Tyson Foods Inc. and Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. Tyson did not oppose the motion for preliminary approval. The plaintiffs in the case include restaurants, catering companies and other foodservice operators alleging anticompetitive conduct in the fed cattle and beef markets. The approval comes on the heels of the DOJ's doubling down on an ongoing investigation into Tyson, JBS, National Beef and Cargill. The DOJ and USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins accused the “Big Four” of colluding to artificially raise beef prices. REFERENCE:  https://meatingplace.com/tysons-multi-million-dollar-beef-settlement-gets-initial-approval/?utm_source=omeda&utm_medium=email&utm_cid=1103020073&utm_campaign=MTGMCD260510014&utm_date=20260511-0300 Beef Exports U.S. beef exports declined in March as shipments to China remained largely stalled, though strong variety meat demand helped push export value for those products to a record high, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation. March beef exports were down 11% from a year ago, while export value fell 8%. Shipments increased year-over-year to Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Indonesia, while exports to South Korea and Taiwan were steady. However, exports to China remained minimal and shipments also trailed year-ago levels to Japan and the Middle East. Excluding China, March beef export volume increased 4% from a year ago while value climbed 8%. REFERENCE:  https://meatingplace.com/beef-exports-pressured-by-china-absence-variety-meat-value-hits-record/?utm_source=omeda&utm_medium=email&utm_cid=1103020073&utm_campaign=MTGMCD260506020&utm_date=20260507-0300 Market Restrictions Due To Pseudorabies Mexico is blocking certain US pork products due to pseudorabies concerns, the USDA said in an advisory note in the FSIS Export Library. The moves by Mexico, the largest market for US pork exports, come a week after the discovery of pseudorabies in a small commercial pig operation in Iowa and a farm in Texas where the infected animals originated, and other trade partners appear to be responding as well. The confirmation of pseudorabies at a small swine facility in Iowa was the first commercial outbreak since 2004, when the US deemed the virus eradicated from the commercial swine industry. The virus can, however, still be found in some feral swine populations, and there is occasional spillover of infection to outdoor herds where contact with feral swine is possible. USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said initial traceback from the Iowa herd indicated that affected boars came from an outdoor facility in Texas.  REFERENCE:   https://meatingplace.com/pseudorabies-fallout-no-1-pork-export-market-restricts-some-us-products/?utm_source=omeda&utm_medium=email&utm_cid=1103020073&utm_campaign=MTGMCD260510014&utm_date=20260511-0300 Featured Experts in the Cattle Industry Trevor Burian - Burian Rangeland Services, LLC Follow On Facebook: @trevor.burian Shaye Wanner – Host of Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ Follow on Facebook: @cattleconvos Contact Us with Questions or Concerns Have questions or feedback? A supply chain expert says ships won't immediately return to normal frequency through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and the US have accepted Pakistan's proposal to pause fighting two weeks, and Donald Trump's pulled back his extreme threat he'd obliterate Iran. Wollongong University's Ethan Nikookar says insuring shipments will still be difficult. "Insurers may still treat the area as high-risk, so that means higher premiums, limited coverage, and fewer ships will move to transit."
