South Carolina's defense had the rare bad game in a 31-7 loss to Vanderbilt last week. The Gamecocks must lock in and play better all the way around on that side of the ball to have a chance to beat Missouri on the road Saturday night. On offense, the idea is to build off of the good against the Commodores and make sure whoever plays quarterback has room and time to operate. Send us a textWhat happens when you discover your family tree has branches on both sides of America's racial divide? Dr. Spenser Simrill Jr.'s journey began with simple curiosity about his family name and evolved into a profound story of reconciliation that's now the subject of a CNN documentary. In this episode Bishop Wright has a conversation with Dr. Spenser Simrill Jr. and his discovery while teaching family history at the University of Georgia. Spenser found an alternate spelling of his surname that unlocked an unexpected connection – in 1871, a Black woman named Harriet Simrill testified against the Ku Klux Klan in a federal Reconstruction trial. Given the distinctive nature of his family name, Spenser realized there must be a connection through enslavement. This suspicion was confirmed when he found a Facebook suggestion for a Black man his age from his father's hometown with the original spelling of their shared surname.Eleven years later, the two families reunite annually, have produced an Audible podcast called "Once Removed: An American Family Reunion," and are featured in CNN's "A Family in Black and White." Their story challenges the notion that denial is the only way to handle difficult historical truths. Instead, Spenser demonstrates how confronting these realities leads to healing and wholeness. Spenser's work reminds us that we are one human family despite our painful history. By choosing to be storytellers who look unflinchingly at reality, we become "peace warriors" committed to recognizing our fundamental interconnectedness. Listen in for the full conversation. Dr. Spenser Simrill Jr, is the creator of the Once Removed podcast and a TEDx speaker on racial healing. His research has informed reconciliation efforts in Northern Ireland, Liberia, and across the American South—culminating in the first historical marker in South Carolina to mention the Ku Klux Klan. His work has appeared on CNN's The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper, Audible Originals, The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and TEDx Asheville. His students have won multiple international competitions, including two wins and an honorable mention in The New York Times Best Student Podcast Contest. Spenser lives with his family in Arden, North Carolina, and teaches at Christ School.Support the show Follow us on IG and FB at Bishop Rob Wright.
In this episode, breaking news hits Coastal Carolina University: a taxpayer-funded employee who praised the murder of Charlie Kirk and suggested Congresswoman Nancy Mace should be next is no longer employed. Tara dives into the bigger issue of tenure in higher education, asking whether state-funded professors should be shielded from accountability no matter what they say or do. Joining the conversation is Pam Evette, South Carolina's Lieutenant Governor and candidate for governor, who makes the case for ending tenure at state schools, empowering students to push back against bias in the classroom, and using financial leverage to drive change. The discussion also turns to illegal immigration enforcement, comparing South Carolina's approach to Florida's “all officers deputized” model, and whether similar steps could soon come to the Palmetto State. This fast-moving episode unpacks how colleges, politics, and law enforcement intersect — and what accountability should look like for those in positions of power.

Few people beyond South Carolina's Lowcountry knew of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston—Mother Emanuel—before the tragic events on the night of June 17, 2015. Although the shooter had targeted Mother Emanuel to agitate racial strife, he could not have anticipated the aftermath or the outpouring of forgiveness from victims' families. Kevin Sack is a veteran journalist and Jacksonville native who has written about national affairs for more than four decades and has been part of three Pulitzer Prize–winning teams. His debut book, Mother Emanuel, is a sweeping history of the first AME church in the South and a profound story of courage and grace amid the fight for racial justice. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, and a graduate of Duke University, Kevin Sack spent thirty years on the staff of The New York Times, where he specialized in writing long-form narrative and investigative reports, often related to race. He also has written for the Los Angeles Times and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine. He was a 2019 Emerson Collective Fellow at New America. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Some places carry the weight of history. Others carry the weight of the dead. The Old Charleston Jail manages to do both. Standing for nearly two centuries, this foreboding structure in Charleston, South Carolina, was built atop a burial ground and went on to become one of the most feared prisons in America. Within its heavy stone walls, both the guilty and the innocent were imprisoned during some of the darkest chapters of American history. Torture, despair, and death seeped into every brick — and it seems the energy of those years never left. Long after the last cell door slammed shut, the spirits remain. Visitors and investigators report the unmistakable clanging of chains echoing in the dead of night, disembodied whispers drifting through musty corridors, and shadowy figures lurking just out of sight. For those who dare step inside, the sensation of being watched — or even followed — is nearly impossible to ignore. But why does the Old Charleston Jail remain so active? Are these merely residual hauntings, echoes of centuries past, or are these conscious spirits still serving a sentence they never escaped in life? Some believe the restless dead of Charleston remain trapped within those walls, prisoners of their own unfinished stories. This is Part Two of our conversation. #OldCharlestonJail #HauntedPrison #RealGhostStories #ParanormalActivity #HauntedHistory #HauntedPlaces #GhostStory #CharlestonSC #DarkHistory #HauntedAmerica #Ghosts #ParanormalPodcast Love real ghost stories? Gabe and Cody dive into Mizzou's matchup with South Carolina. Has this game lost some luster? Are the Gamecocks still a threat? Plus some insight from Billy Derrick, who covered Vanderbilt's 31-7 demolition of South Carolina on Saturday night.
Trigger warning: discussion of assassination, threats, and political violence. Former South Carolina Freedom Caucus Chairman Adam Morgan joins the show to sound the alarm over professors and state employees accused of celebrating the murder of Charlie Kirk — and, in some cases, suggesting more killings should follow. Morgan calls out Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Winthrop, and other schools for protecting employees he says are inciting violence with taxpayer dollars. From demands to defund universities that won't fire staff, to warnings about cultural indoctrination in classrooms, Morgan lays out a fiery case for accountability. He blasts South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster's silence, contrasts it with strong responses from leaders in Florida and Texas, and calls for a special session to strip funding from colleges that refuse to act. This episode pulls no punches on higher education, political hypocrisy, and the fight to stop the normalization of violence in South Carolina classrooms.
Trigger warning: discussion of threats, assassination, and political violence. In this episode the host responds to a wave of alarming rhetoric — from alleged media distortions used to justify violence, to campus faculty accused of celebrating political murder. Featuring JD Vance's blunt remarks, the episode examines how powerful institutions, funded outlets, and viral social posts can radicalize anger into real-world threats. You'll hear concrete examples (including an alleged Coastal Carolina employee's violent tweets), critiques of elite funders and publications, and a raw call for accountability from university leaders. Expect an urgent, opinion-driven breakdown of: how propaganda can dehumanize political opponents, why “unity” isn't possible with those who celebrate violence, the stakes for public institutions in red states like South Carolina, and practical steps the host urges listeners to take — from polite civic pressure to demanding firings and defunding when necessary. For listeners seeking a no-nonsense, high-energy take on the intersection of media, campus culture, and political violence.
South Carolina's universities are under fire as accusations swirl that Clemson employees celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk and even suggested future political murders. Attorney General Alan Wilson says the First Amendment doesn't protect incitement to violence — yet Clemson's leadership resists full accountability. Former Freedom Caucus Chairman Adam Morgan joins the show to expose what he calls a taxpayer-funded effort to normalize “pro-murder” rhetoric on campuses. From calls to defund Clemson and Coastal Carolina to warnings about precedent-setting free speech battles, this episode dives into the clash between higher education, politics, and public safety. Is this about protecting academic freedom — or protecting radicalism? And what should parents, donors, and lawmakers do next? Tune in for a raw, unfiltered conversation on the stakes for South Carolina and beyond.
This week, Big Chief heads to the Lowcountry to sit down with Burnt Church Distillery President Chris Crowe and Head Distiller Peter Thompson in Bluffton, South Carolina. Together, they dive into the traditions of Carolina grains and the bold vision behind one of the Southeast's most exciting craft distilleries. The tasting kicks off with Johny Fever Small Batch, a four-grain whiskey that immediately caught the Big Man's attention with its balance and character. From there, they raise the bar with Anita's Choice, a six-grain whiskey layered with depth, complexity, and a flavor profile that demands respect. In the second half of the show, Big Chief pours a truly unique expression: Bluffton Whiskey, an American rice whiskey crafted with Carolina Gold rice. Its striking character is unlike anything else on the market. The journey ends with Palmer's Stretch, a dark, rich, chocolaty rye whiskey that leaves a lasting impression on the palate and the soul. This episode is more than a tasting, it's a celebration of Southern heritage, bold innovation, and the people who are shaping the future of whiskey in the Carolinas. And just like Burnt Church Distillery, Big Chief believes in the power of freedom of speech, the freedom to create, and the freedom to let your voice be heard. Whiskey tells a story and this week's episode proves that when you have the courage to be creative, the stories only get stronger. So settle in, take the ride, and remember—whiskey is best enjoyed when you sip it slow and easy. Let the flavors tell their story, let the moment breathe, and let the journey be just as rich as the pour in your glass.

Clinton administration, particularly the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (Sponsored by Joe Biden, significantly increased mass incarceration, disproportionately harmed the Black community and intensified policing Mass incarceration began before Clinton's presidency, the 1994 Crime Bill expanded it substantially. Mandatory life sentences: Black people were disproportionately targeted by "three-strikes" laws. Federal "three-strikes" provision that required mandatory life sentences for individuals with three or more felony convictions. Crime Rate statistics by ratio fluctuated in the geographical areas where this was applied. Correlation with a steady rise in Prison populations was Expansion of the death penalty: The act expanded the list of offenses eligible for the federal death penalty to include many non-homicide drug crimes. In the five years following the bill's passage, 74% of defendants facing federal death penalty recommendations were people of color. Increased police funding: The bill created the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, to put more police on the streets. Racial disparities in drug sentencing: Building Drug War initiated by Nixon, Clinton-era policies maintained strict sentencing disparities between crack and powder cocaine, which disproportionately affected Black communities. Targeting youth of color and Low Income: The bill included provisions that increased racial disparities in the already dysfunctional juvenile justice mill. This expanded the "school-to-prison pipeline" and led to tougher penalties for low-income youth. ...AND WHO says the left can't do ANTI-FREEDOM MILITARIZED POLICE? For more than two decades, activist, educator, diplomat Jessica Stern has worn a variety of hats in her efforts to advance LGBTQ human rights around the world, always at the forefront — unafraid, unapologetic, speaking truth to power. Currently serving as Senior Human Rights and U.S. Foreign Policy Fellow at the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights at the Harvard Kennedy School, Stern talks about her pioneering work at the United Nations, her tenure as the top queer diplomat in the U.S. State Department and her advice for standing up for human rights in a hostile world (interviewed by David Hunt). And in NewsWrap: the lower house of the Dutch parliament votes to criminalize so-called “conversion therapy,” Hong Kong legislators overwhelmingly vote down a bill to grant same-gender couples limited legal rights, an hour-long LGBTQ+ Pride motorcade cruises through the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv in the very midst of the Russian invasion, the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily allows transgender students in South Carolina can use campus bathrooms that align with their gender identity, Oregon state lawmaker Cyrus Javadi has had enough of the Republican Party, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Joe Boehnlein and Melanie Keller (produced by Brian DeShazor). #OldCharlestonJail #HauntedPrison #RealGhostStories #ParanormalActivity #HauntedHistory #HauntedPlaces #GhostStory #CharlestonSC #DarkHistory #HauntedAmerica #Ghosts #ParanormalPodcast Love real ghost stories?
