On this episode of Remainders we watch the 1997 political sci-fi movie Starship Troopers. Dismissed upon release as a generic action movie, time has been kind to this movie about fascism and soldier recruitment in a pro-war society. A militarized society in the future waging war against a sub-human alien species, Starship has gained cultural appreciation as a meta-film about wartime propaganda. A first-time viewing for one, we'll see if this is a dumb, fun movie or an indictment of fascism. Or both.Other topics include a David Lynch retrospective, the passing of Nikky Katt, new shows we're watching, and we ask the question: If a movie debuts and is only on streaming, does it really exist?Songs of the WeekFoolish Heart by The MavericksThe Baron by Johnny CashRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Steven Soderbergh's new BLACK BAG is a spy thriller, sure, but it's also the story of a marriage, and watching its sophisticated central couple banter their way through a sprawling mystery, it's hard not to be reminded of one of cinema's most enduring and endearing crime-solving couples, Nick and Nora Charles. So this week we're going back to their film debut, 1934's THE THIN MAN, to see how W.S. Van Dyke's (barely) pre-Code crime caper balances the effervescent charm of its hard-drinking stars against the plot mechanics of a murder mystery, and whether any of the film's many supporting players ever manage to steal the spotlight from Nick, Nora, and their disobedient dog Asta. Then in Feedback, a listener writes in with a notable omission from our recent discussion of STARSHIP TROOPERS. Please share your thoughts about THE THIN MAN, BLACK BAG, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Bong Joon Ho's new MICKEY 17 takes a lot of big swings, from star Robert Pattinson's vocal affectation to a comedic fixation on “sauce,” all of it in service of big, bold, arguably blunt satire. It all makes for a somewhat messy but highly discussable film, both on its own and in conversation with Paul Verhoeven's STARSHIP TROOPERS, another big swing of a sci-fi satire that aims to entertain as it undermines propagandistic societies where leaders rule by catchphrase, where citizenship is conditional, and where working-class lives are expendable. We dive into all of that, plus space bugs that may not actually be bugs, then offer a Your Next Picture Show recommendation for another MICKEY 17 pairing contender, Duncan Jones' MOON. Please share your thoughts about STARSHIP TROOPERS, MICKEY 17, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. On this week's episode, Cody enthusiastically shares with Joe the latest adaptation of the iconic science fiction film Starship Troopers, which has been reimagined by the talented writer and director Neil Blomkamp. Blomkamp, known for his unique visual storytelling and thought-provoking narratives, brings a fresh perspective to the beloved source material. Cody delves into the specifics of this adaptation, discussing how it aims to capture the essence of the original while introducing new elements that resonate with contemporary audiences. He highlights the innovative special effects and the thought-provoking themes that Blomkamp is renowned for, creating anticipation for fans of the genre.Transitioning to another popular franchise, Joe informs Cody about the remarkable success of the Halo TV series, which has gained a significant following on Netflix, particularly outside the United States. This unexpected popularity sparks a discussion about the global appeal of video game adaptations and how they are finding new audiences in international markets. Joe expresses his surprise at the show's reception, considering the mixed reviews it initially received, and they both ponder what factors contributed to its rise in popularity, such as engaging storytelling and strong character development. As the conversation shifts, Cody provides a detailed breakdown of the rumors circulating after the shocking death of a major character in the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again. The unexpected twist has left fans reeling, and Cody explores the implications it may have on the storyline and character arcs moving forward. Joe listens intently, sharing his own theories and speculating about how this bold creative choice might impact the series' reception and its connection to the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.Joe then expresses his disbelief that The Minecraft Movie hasn't already been released in theaters, given the immense popularity of the game. He reflects on the potential for such a film to either soar to great heights or crash and burn at the box office, considering the challenges of adapting a game with such a loose narrative structure. This leads to a broader discussion about the risks associated with video game adaptations and the expectations that come with them.Continuing along the theme of adaptations, the conversation turns to Disney's apparent lack of confidence in the upcoming live-action remake of Snow White. Cody and Joe analyze the marketing strategies employed by Disney and how they reflect the company's faith in their projects. They discuss the mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, particularly regarding the casting choices and the changes made to the beloved story, which have sparked significant debate within the community. This naturally leads to a conversation about the backlash surrounding other live-action remakes, focusing on the new Lilo & Stitch film. Joe expresses his frustration at the vocal complaints from fans regarding changes made to characters and storylines in these adaptations. The duo examines the balance between honoring the original material and updating it for modern audiences, pondering whether filmmakers should prioritize nostalgia or innovation when reimagining classic tales. As they continue to reminisce about cinematic history, Joe recounts the notorious disaster that was the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. With its convoluted plot and stark departure from the source material, the film has become a cautionary tale for future adaptations. Cody and Joe dissect what went wrong with this film, reflecting on how it has impacted the perception of video game movies ever since and what lessons can be learned from its failures. Finally, the discussion takes a fascinating turn as they dive deep into the works of David Cronenberg, exploring his distinctive filmmaking style and the themes that permeate his body of work. They analyze how Cronenberg's films often blur the lines between horror and science fiction, delving into the human psyche and the complexities of identity. This exploration reveals their admiration for Cronenberg's ability to challenge audiences and provoke thought through his provocative storytelling.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesLast week, during an interview with Brazilian pop culture and media YouTube outlet, Omelete, to promote their new film, The Electric State, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars directors, Joe and Anthony Russo offered insights on how the upcoming pair Avengers of films differ from their previous multi-phase, saga-concluders: Infinity War and Endgame; describing the duology as a “new beginning.” Joe Russo went on to reiterate the real motivation for the creative duo returning to the franchise after leaving on an all-time high more than 5 years ago. In a double dose of DC casting news, sitcom vet Jason Ritter has joined the cast of Lanterns in a recurring role as Billy Macon, a ‘good-looking charmer who does his father's bidding, clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose.' Elsewhere, The Penguin actor, Colin Farrell has entered negotiations to replace Daniel Craig as the titular sergeant of Luca Guadagnino's Word War II film, Sgt. Rock.Despite the release of several new genre films, last weekend's domestic box office was notably slow – at an approximate $54 million total, sluggish enough to earn the title of 2025's worst box office thus far. Paramount's R-rated action comedy, Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid, took the top spot with $8.7 million, slightly below expectations. Meanwhile, Mickey 17 suffered a 60% drop in its second weekend, barely managing to stave off Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller, Black Bag, with hauls of $7.51 and $7.5 million, respectively. After more than a year of speculation, Apple TV+ has officially ordered a fourth season of its Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso. The pickup comes after co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis closed a deal to reprise his role as the titular character. Disney has released the first official trailer for body swap comedy reunion sequel Freakier Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The film hits theaters on August 8th, 22 years after the original. Conan O'Brien, who hosted the 97th Oscars telecast on March 2, has agreed to return and host the 98th Oscars telecast on March 15, 2026, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday. CBS has also announced that comedian Nikki Glaser will return in 2026 to host the 83rd annual Golden Globes.More than a year after Warner Bros. shelved Coyote vs. Acme for tax incentives, independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment is reportedly nearing a deal to acquire the film for around $50 million. Ketchup recently handled the theatrical release of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which has earned $3.9 million since its March 14 debut.Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, tasking District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein. The Hollywood Reporter has learned “zero progress” has been made on Saw XI since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024. Speaking on the project, Melton said “The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page.” A24 has released the first trailer for romantic feature film Materialists starring Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson. The film hits theaters on June 13th. Netflix has released the first trailer for Adam Sandler-led sequel Happy Gilmore 2. The film begins streaming on July 25th. Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Netflix's Cujo, a remake of Stephen King's classic horror novel about a vicious St. Bernard. The project is still in early development, and sources say Aronofsky has yet to hold creative discussions with Netflix. If the deal goes through, this would be his first feature film for a streaming platform.

This week's pairing is brought to you by: space bugs! Specifically, space bugs as a metaphor for a fascistic society's disregard for any perceived-to-be-lower life form, human or otherwise. Inspired by the clear satire of Bong Joon Ho's new MICKEY 17, we're revisiting Paul Verhoeven's STARSHIP TROOPERS, whose satirical intent was less clear to some audiences when it hit theaters in 1997. Today, while we're on the same page as far as what Verhoeven was going for with his propagandistic display of military might, opinions still differ among our panel as to how well he pulled it off. We get into that disagreement, as well as the surprisingly enduring effects and the improbability of a film like this being made in Hollywood today. Then in Feedback, a listener inspired by a recent pairing shares their reaction to a first-time viewing of THE KILLING FIELDS.
