Dr. Dale Krier is a born and raised New Yorker. She freed herself from the east coast and moved to Colorado for undergrad when she was 18, graduated from CSU in 1987, and then moved back east to be closer to her mom after graduation. She worked for 10 years at a brick-and-mortar practice. When the practice was sold to a corporation, she quit the next day. Dale started Creature Comforts Mobile practice in 1997 with a Dodge truck. She discovered the beauty of in home euthanasia practice, joined IAAHPC, and became certified in hospice and palliative care in 2017. COVID was the smokescreen that allowed her to transition her non-end-of-life care clients & patients to other veterinarians. She is currently 98% end-of-life care and 2% A+ clients that she still works with. She is currently in the process of transitioning to working 3 weeks a month and playing one week a month. Topics covered in this episode: Dr. Dale's journey to starting her house call practice How a Dodgen Truck helped her leave a long-term job that was sold to a corporation How Covid helped Dr. Dale pivot to end-of-life care The pros and cons of owning a mobile clinic End-of-life care Getting creative with advertising your mobile practice Boundaries and the freedom of house call practices on the road Deciding what to charge for your time and services Links and Resources: Visit the Creature Comforts website to learn more about Dr. Dale Krier Find Creature Comforts: In Home Pet Hospice & Euthanasia on Facebook Dr. Dale's writing, “Life Has Moments That Take Your Breath Away” Life has moments that take your breath away. When I was 12 years old my father died at work. I never got to say goodbye, never got to see him, never got to say “I love you” one last time. My perfect life was shattered in an instant with a knock on the door. The police officer stated that my dad had a heart attack and passed before the paramedics arrived. Everything afterward was a blur. Phone calls, family, tears, sadness, denial, anger, helplessness, hugs, guilt, a funeral. Kind people making caring comments that couldn't take the sadness away. My mother struggled with her own loss. I was left to figure things out. Routines helped. Back to school and my life. Friends, teachers, and family didn't know what to say, so they said nothing. All assumed that if I was doing well in school I must be okay. Time went on. Life choices were made. I wanted to become a veterinarian. Not a common goal for a woman in the 1970”s. My awkwardness with human relationships drew me to the animals. I was shy around people but always felt an inner peace snuggling with a kitty or playing with a dog. Animals made me feel alive and loved. Veterinary school was beyond challenging mentally, emotionally, and physically. The demands of the curriculum were relentless. The love of the animals was always the reward. Restoring health to a sick, helpless creature is a joy beyond words. My years in training were spent honing my diagnostic and surgical skills to prepare me for the business world. Four years of veterinary school flew by and I moved 2000 miles across the country to start the next chapter of my life closer to family. My first job as a veterinarian lasted for 10 years. My mentors were seasoned veterinarians who shared their advice, experience, and support. I grew secure in my skills and enjoyed the challenges that my career provided. Every day was different. Nothing was ever truly routine. I would never know what surprise awaited me beyond exam room door number one. Was it a cute kitty or a snarling dog, a happy or crying pet owner, a routine vaccine appointment, or an emergency hit by car? There has never been a moment where I didn't believe I was doing important work. One day I was called into the practice owner's office and told that the business had been sold. My employers would be moving on in their lives and the practice was now owned by a corporation. Something inside me died that day. Once again my perfect family was shattered. That night I discussed the change of circumstance with my husband. I had always fantasized about operating a house call practice. As a child, I spent hours reading James Herriot's books and dreaming about life as a house call veterinarian. Helping pets and their people in their home environments was a life dream. Five months later Creature Comforts Mobile Veterinary Clinic was born. The day-to-day craziness of operating a small animal mobile veterinary clinic is challenging, emotional, chaotic, tiring, and beyond rewarding. At the end of the day it always comes back to the love of the animal and making a difference in someone's life. Families who can't get their cat in a carrier, cats who get violently ill on the car ride to the animal hospital, dogs who tremble with anxiety or growl with aggression. People don't just call to make an appointment, they call to tell their pet's story. Many procedures overlap in traditional vs house call medicine but the one that tweaked my thinking the most was the requests for end-of-life care. A faltering voice on the other end of the phone, sometimes silence intermixed with sobs. I learned to recognize these calls for what they were. A pet owner reaching out to a stranger asking for help to provide a gentle goodbye to a beloved family member. All veterinarians are trained to perform the euthanasia procedure but few get to experience the calmness and peacefulness that comes with attending to a pet in the comfort of home. Caring for the human and 4-legged family with dignity, respect, and privacy is truly my calling. People are placed in our path for a reason. After completing Reiki Level 1 and Level 2 certification classes it seemed like the stars were aligning for me. I found myself in polite conversation with a colleague sitting next to me at a veterinary conference. She expressed to me that she had recently opened an end-of-life and hospice care mobile practice. She ignited something in me that I had been contemplating for quite a long time. My research led me to a relatively new group of veterinarians offering end-of-life services only for their furry patients. This is my vision, my passion. I love being able to provide validation, information, options, hugs, and support to families in crisis. I love being able to walk families through an overwhelmingly tough choice and come out on the other side acknowledging that the right decisions were made. No veterinarian starts out on their career path with the goal of helping pets die. Quite frankly, we spend all our energy and training trying to save lives. Exams, laboratory work, x-ray, ultrasound, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, all with the hope of saving a life. Veterinary school does not prepare us well for the psychology of dying. Emotions are raw, the sadness is palpable and the connections to one's pet runs deep. Death does not have to be something we fear. It can take place in a respectful way with food and music and candles and stories and hugs and tears. Tears of sadness mixed with tears of relief that our friends are no longer suffering. I am deeply honored when families reach out to me and ask for my help to provide a peaceful farewell. I have spent the last 45 years missing my father and wondering if he would be proud of the person I have become. I now know that the passion I bring to my work is due to the lessons I have received from loving and honoring the man I know he was. He gives me strength to provide support to my clients and walk beside them each step of the way as they say goodbye to a beloved friend. Many of these families I will never meet again, yet the moments that we shared will never be forgotten. “ My pet is old and his body is not cooperating with his mind and he has become a shadow of who he once was. I need to consider what life he has left and if I should be letting him go to be pain-free.” client's comment The House Call Vet Academy links: Find out about The House Call Vet Academy online CE course Learn more about Dr. Eve Harrison Learn more about 1-to-1 coaching for current & prospective house call, mobile, & concierge vets Get House Call Vet swag! Salespeople, by their nature, want to be accommodating and easy to speak to. However, top-performing salespeople are too busy to spend time on prospects who won't ever become customers. They have a way of ‘weeding out' folks who don't need the solutions they have, and they do it by inviting the prospect to say ‘no.' To learn how we can incorporate that mindset into how we sell, we sat down with Steve Weinberg, a sales author and trainer with a career of closing large deals under his belt. You'll love the simple ways he showed us to invite and to say ‘no' more, so that we can close deals sooner. It's all in this week's Bulletproof Selling podcast!

Karen Scherrer has been a registered veterinary technician for 25 years this month. Ironically, she is officially retiring after spending the past 10+ years of focused effort for supposed major animal welfare organizations, as she has been consistently disappointed in the real-life scenarios that have played out behind the scenes. The most recent scenario was her experience helping to rescue a historic retrieval of 4000 beagles from a research breeding compound. She has worked in every aspect of veterinary medicine imaginable, from the now-closed Wildlife Way Station, feeding donuts to bears, tube feeding newborn squirrels, restraining caymans while doctors searched for a vein to high-kill shelters, zoos, small animal hospitals, equine rescue, mobile medicine and traveling to multiple separate catastrophic events. Within one year, Karen practiced along a spectrum from living in a tent following Hurricane Katrina, opening makeshift shelters at abandoned senior centers in Louisiana, and perishes she can not even pronounce. She also scrubbed in on neurosurgery cases and traveled to perform anesthesia in general practices as a mobile surgery technician with a board-certified surgeon. Hands down, her favorite area of practice has been the LA zoo. Karen is married to a board-certified small animal surgeon who she met while working as a mobile technician, and even behind the mask and cap, he still called her. They have a 15-year-old daughter, two angelic Golden Retrievers, and live in Carlsbad, CA. Her goal is to make others think outside the box and challenge old ways of thinking by trailblazing new ways of doing things in her life and her businesses. Dr. Evarest Maguo has been a veterinarian for over thirty years, and in 1997 he established his own veterinary practice and mobile clinic, along with his wife, Mrs. Evelyne. They are both experienced in agricultural services, environmental work, and the provision of veterinary care and animal welfare education. Evarest has been working as a vet since 1990 and holds a degree in Environmental Science and a Masters in Zoology. He is supported by his wife Evelyne, who has a certificate in agriculture and livestock and currently operates their agricultural and vet supply shop. They also have an on-site shelter that they use to house and treat a range of animals that require specific care. It is their end goal to re-home these animals to good homes. Their clinic and shelter are in Sekai, Arusha and they also offer a mobile clinic service in Arusha and nearby areas. Interview Answers: Ground nuts Yes, I was born in Dodoma, but I have been in Arusha for three-quarters of my life. I did my Veterinary training in Arusha as well. There are some other vets in Arusha, but they do not offer a mobile service. We are also very committed to improving animal welfare, whereas most vets in the area are not as passionate as us here at Elang'ata Agrovet. The tribe that I originate from in Dodoma is called the Go-go tribe and they are livestock keepers, and with my late brother also being a vet, I became very interested in animals from a young age. As I grew up, I entered a livestock/ agricultural secondary school to pursue my interest in animals. After school, I then went to vet college in Arusha, once I graduated, I was employed by the government in 1990 as an animal welfare inspector for several years. I then decided to retire, and start my own company in 1997, and so Elang'ata Agrovet was born! There are two areas to the vet, and mobile clinic and a stationary clinic. Mobile services are beneficial because I can take in my surroundings of the animal, and through this, I am able to gain a better understanding of why the animal may be ill or sick. Sometimes, it is obvious that people that take their animal to eh stationary vet sometimes do not tell the full truth, and so it is difficult to tell why the animal may be unwell. Participation by the whole family of a given client is important because I can educate more people, and more people become accountable for the animal's health at the same time. When funding opportunities are available, we also try to carry out vaccination clinics, outreach programmes, education programmes. What is it like being a vet in Tanzania – To be a vet here is challenging because sometimes you want to reach a lot of people, but you can be, and usually are incredibly restricted by the money made available. We get very little government funding which makes it difficult to provide a service. There is also very little awareness of animal welfare in Arusha and Tanzania, so even in the Police, for example, it is very difficult to regulate new animal welfare legislation. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one that knows! Again, some concepts of animal welfare are completely new to Tanzanians, re-homing for example – people are not educated in re-homing of animals and its benefits, so it makes it difficult to re-home dogs at the shelter. We treat a range of animals big and small! Day-to-day work usually includes chickens, donkeys, cows, cats and, dogs. I am prepared to answer a call for any animal! -We sometimes do joint vaccination programmes around the national parks here, including the Serengeti! We vaccinate animals around the national parks, which in turn decreases the transmission rate of diseases like rabies into safari animals. Everything! Surgeries such as neutering and spaying, amputation etc, vaccinations, diagnosis, pregnancies, artificial insemination and many more! Rehabilitation, continuous treatment, antibiotics etc. In Tanzania, we have a lack of even basic medical equipment that we need daily, not to mention the lack of state of art equipment. We have no x-ray or ultrasounds, which means we must diagnose every single case visually. There is also a lack of specific drugs for specific diseases. This means simple treatment, such as the use of antibiotics, is not as efficient and targeted as we would like. As mentioned, there is a lack of general funding and support from the government, which really is the cause of a lot of the issues we have here. There is also a lack of knowledge and education of animal welfare leading to a lack of care and poor animal welfare. This is where outreach and education funding can be so important. Country infrastructure can also make things difficult. There are some very difficult areas to access, and rising fuel costs certainly don't make things easy! Many locals also do not have the money to provide proper care for their animals, and I cannot afford to give out medical treatment for free, unfortunately. Question not quite understood – can you please elaborate? You must be prepared to work around the clock and be prepared to give up many things. You must be prepared to be called out for the mobile clinic, for example, I had to explain to my wife on my wedding day why I had to take the medical bag along with me! You must be ready to learn online, we are no longer at university, so you need to stay up to date with new equipment, new techniques etc. Being ready to take on a wide variety of animals We have an animal welfare trust fund called the Protection of Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). We aim to improve the lives of domestic, farm and working animals in Tanzania through education, advocacy, and on-ground clinics & workshops. On a given day, we can have several groups of volunteers and students coming to learn and gain experience in veterinary practice whilst also getting a cultural experience at our homestay too! We have recently joined the Workaway programme, so we can host up to six Workaway volunteers at a time. We provide accommodation and food in return for work at the shelter, and volunteers get the opportunity to see how we carry out surgeries and vaccination clinics etc. Spiced tea! But I also like to drink a pint of soured milk before bed! and my new volunteers have me hooked on Cadbury's hot chocolate! Join me today as I speak with the amazing, Dr. Christie Cornelius about neurodiversity, retirement, corporate house call practices, and more! Christie was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa, where she graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology from Loras College in 1997. Wanting to develop her career in a warmer climate near big cities, she moved to Texas and began a Master's Program in Zoology while engaging in research for the National Fisheries and Wildlife Department. While in this program, she applied and was accepted to Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2004. She moved to Houston, TX to start her career as a small animal GP, eventually moving into emergency medicine, where she developed her passion for assisting families with decision-making and euthanasia. In 2012, she created Last Wishes, a mobile euthanasia, and pet hospice service in Houston, eventually re-branding to Senior Paws and expanding it into an interdisciplinary team of 25 pet hospice professionals. In 2015, she started The Last Wishes Fund, a non-profit 501c3 organization to help struggling families afford end-of-life services in the Greater Houston area. In 2017, Christie opened the first pet hospice center in Texas, and added pet aquamation services, offering a robust A to Z end-of-life operation to her community. In 2021, she sold both services to BluePearl Veterinary Specialists and stayed on as a Medical Director to help develop a global Pet Hospice initiative. Wanting to develop her business and leadership skills to a higher level to open herself up for more opportunities outside of a corporate structure, she recently decided to leave BluePearl to pursue an Executive MBA Degree from Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business to help other independent veterinarians improve the success of their mobile practices despite the rise in corporate consolidation in the end-of-life space. In loving memory of Dr. Steve Weinberg 1959-2022 This special episode is meant to be a memorial in loving memory of Dr. Steve Weinberg. Steve was one of the original house call vets in Los Angeles. I did this interview with Steve in March of 2021. I'd been referring cases to his practice (911Vets, which then became PriVet Pet Care) for years and we'd become friends on Facebook, knowing that we were both musician vets. At the time, I was preparing content for the House Call Vet Academy, my online course. I decided to start a series of interviews for the course that turned out to be the pre-cursor to this podcast, and the inspiration. I interviewed many house call vets in different niches, to demonstrate for course participants all of the ways that we can do this work, and to show just how brilliant, innovative, and awesome the members of our community really are. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to connect with Steve face to face for the first time because of this interview and to have a live conversation. During that conversation (off the record, once the recording was finished) he told me that he had been diagnosed with neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer a few months prior, and that he did not know how much time he had left. Shortly after this conversation, we started to collaborate musically. I recorded on flute in a song he wrote called “Legacy” that was to come out on his next album. We had an awesome time recording and playing music together with the help of Steve's son, Zak, who is an incredibly talented professional music producer. After we had so much fun and realized we could create a lot more beautiful music together, we decided that we would collaborate again in creating the music for this podcast. The acoustic guitar music at the beginning and end of this podcast was composed, performed, and recorded by Steve while he was in and out of the hospital in the last few months of his life. I'm beyond grateful that he sent over the parts of the music he'd finished recording, and that his “musical DNA” will always be a part of this project. He called the song “Just Trying to Help,” as the veterinarian's theme song for the House Call Vet Cafe podcast, in light of the suicide crisis in veterinary medicine. The plan was that he would layer on mandolin, hammered dulcimer, my playing on flute, house call veterinarian Jessica Fragola playing fiddle, and house call veterinarian Brandy Nunez on synthesizer … to weave recorded tracks of each of us into the music, one instrument at a time in each episode that we released until the music was complete. Steve was incredibly excited about this project, and we'd been talking about it every few days for months. He was super excited about being interviewed on the podcast as a regular guest, and he was planning to have his house call practice PriVet sponsor the project. He even named our nascent musical ensemble the “House Call Vet All Star Band.” Steve wrote out a flute part for me to record just a few weeks before he passed away. He was in the hospital when he wrote it. It hasn't been recorded yet. I plan to honor his memory by having him as a guest on the podcast through this interview we recorded almost a year ago. I will continue to celebrate his life by completing this musical project we started together, no matter how long it takes. I feel very blessed and honored to have been able to capture this interview, some of Steve's wisdom, and his story. I'm so grateful to have had the chance to get to know him in the last year of his life, as not only a colleague but as a friend. He was a manifestation of vision, talent, humor, and true kindness. May his memory & his music be a blessing for all of us in our veterinary community & beyond. October 1, 1904. Show up at a newsstand this morning, and you'll see that the October issue of McClure's magazine has hit the shelves. Alongside it, newspapers advertise what's inside: "Ida M. Tarbell renders her final judgment of Rockefeller's Trust." It's the 19th and last installment in a series that has made people sit up and take notice of a powerful monopoly and the man behind it. How did a scrappy reporter take on the richest man in the country? And how, in the process, did she change corporate America and investigative journalism itself?Special thanks to our guests, Stephanie Gorton, author of Citizen Reporters: S. S. In this episode we explore how we, as Customer Educators tackle the source of the river of knowledge. How does one approach discovery and work with Subject Matter Experts to get the best material? Have a listen and we'll explain our strategies. Discovery depends on SMEs There's nothing worse than finding out that content is the blocker to building a Customer Education program. After all, instructional design relies on access to subject matter experts (SMEs). https://www.pexels.com/@fotografierende If you’re in a small organization or working on a brand-new product, chances are that you have nothing - Zip, Zero, Diddly Squat - to work with. There’s no documentation, sparse notes, and very likely, an overworked Product Manager who’s way too busy to deal with you. Using the traditional ADDIE content development process, the first thing you do before you design or develop content is an analysis phase. You collect existing knowledge and documentation, analyze performance gaps, and use all of it to inform your design. But that process won't work for people working at startups or other organizations that move too fast for ADDIE. In small organizations, knowledge usually isn't documented thoroughly. It's locked in the heads of busy people who are trying to do their day jobs. These are your product managers, your technical architects, your customer success managers. Getting them to document their knowledge or create training is like squeezing blood from a stone. Become an investigative journalist Dave's alma mater, the University of Missouri, has one of the leading schools of journalism in the country. U Missouri professor Steve Weinberg calls investigative journalism: Reporting, through one's own initiative and work product, matters of importance to readers, viewers, or listenerWeinberg, Steve (1996). The Reporter's Handbook: An Investigator's Guide To Documents and Techniques. St. Martin's Press. In Customer Education, we are very much like reporters. Our customers depend on us to understand this material, organize it, and present it in a sensible way. Sometimes we also have to doggedly pursue the truth. That’s our job. In this episode, Adam also refers to an article by Melissa Milloway, who is a Learning Experience Design industry leader, called "Here's How an Organization Loses Trust in its Own L&D Team." The reasons she provides in her article are familiar. We often leave our stakeholders hanging. They ask us for something that isn't really training. For example, they'll say, "We want all our customers to know about this new feature." Well, is that Customer Education? Is it marketing? Is that a comms plan? Even if it's not training, we owe our stakeholders due diligence. Instead of following up with them, we ignore the problem. Another reason she provides is that we say yes to everything without doing our homework. As Customer Educators, we must be consultative, even with senior leadership and complex customers. If a customer's exec sponsor comes to us and asks for two 4-hour trainings, which they'll record for their new hires in the future, we might be doing them a disservice if we don't push back. That might not be the right solution for their future new hires. Finally, we may no
