Wallace Chow, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines, handed over a bag of rice printed with a Republic of China (Taiwan) flag and "Love from Taiwan" to Philippine officials during the ceremony. Chow also says the Taiwan Technical Mission in the Philippines will soon begin projects in Isabela and Cagayan provinces in northeastern Luzon to increase rice production, in a bid to ensure (確保) no one will suffer from hunger when the Southeast Asian country is hit by natural disasters in the future. Philippine officials say their country appreciates the generosity of Taiwan for the donation, which will go a long way in easing the burden of victims and the poorest in the communities. Sunday's referendum was sparked by a campaign by scientists and environmentalists to save Switzerland's iconic glaciers, which are melting away at an alarming rate. Campaigners initially (最初) proposed even more ambitious measures but later backed a government plan that requires Switzerland to achieve “net zero” emissions by 2050. The nationalist Swiss People's Party, which had demanded the popular vote, had claimed the measures would cause electricity prices to rise. Swiss glaciers experienced record melting last year, losing more than 6% of their volume and alarming scientists who say a loss of 2% would once have been considered extreme. Shares in Taiwan closed higher Monday as interest in artificial intelligence pushed chipmaker TTSMC and iPhone assembler Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. higher. US news outlet "The Messenger" published a report citing 3 anonymous sources, that the US government has been formulating the evacuation plan for citizens living in Taiwan for at least six months. The report claims an insider pointed out that Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 as a driving factor behind the development of the plan. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated during a routine White House briefing today that it is not standard U.S policy to evacuate American citizens from conflict zones, the U.S. has protocols "for any type of emergency". Kirby goes on to say that "there's no indication at this time that current conditions in Taiwan would warrant any reconsideration (重新考慮) of that policy". (NS) **CWB: Rain Continues for South ** Rainfall is set to continue for southern Taiwan. The Central Weather Bureau says a stationary front continues to linger (逗留, 徘徊) over the island today, likely causing showers or thunderstorms in central and southern Taiwan as well as brief periods of rainfall in Taitung. The CWB says the precipitation over southern regions will be more sustained, while northern and eastern Taiwan should see brief thundershowers in the afternoon. But forecasters say the unstable conditions could result in short periods of heavy or even torrential rain, and those heading out should take precautions, particuarly near coastal regions. Decathlete athletes are special. The sport is TEN events: sprint 100 meters, then 400 meters, then race 1500 meters; then comes 110 meters with hurdles you have to jump, then it's on to the long jump, the high jump, pole vaulting, discus throwing, javelin throwing, and finally, shotput. It's exhausting just reading that list, let alone doing it. But Maysang Kalimud, from the Amis Indigenous group in Taitung, won silver in the decathlon at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Competing against his friend, American Rafer Johnson, Maysang Kalimud, better known by his Chinese name, CK Yang (楊傳廣 1933-2007), lost the gold medal by a hair's breadth, and became the first Olympic medalist from Taiwan. The man the international press called “The Iron Man of Asia,” may have been the greatest all-round athlete to ever compete for Taiwan. We love this story, so we're re-releasing it this week – enjoy! The Tai-Ex gained ground on Thursday, as most other regional markets closed the day higher. However, investor optimism about the U-S Federal Reserve holding back on aggressive interest rate hikes was countered by uncertainty over coronavirus lockdowns in China. **Three More Private High Schools Placed on MOE 'Watch List' ** The Ministry of Education has placed three more private high schools on its "watch list." The three schools include the Hong Ren Catholic Girls' High School in Chiayi City, the Yu Min Vocational School in Miaoli County and Yu-Ren Senior High School in Taitung. According to the education ministry, they were added the list because their "financial condition has markedly declined to the extent that the school cannot pay off its debt, or that financial problems has seriously impacted the running of the school." The announcement Thursday comes two weeks after delegates from both parties met to address the Venezuelan crisis, promoted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Norwegian diplomats will guide the negotiations. The talks formally began in September 2021 in Mexico but were suspended the following month when President Nicolas Maduro ordered his delegation to withdraw in protest of the extradition to the United States of a close ally. **UK Businesses Urge Gov Not to Scrap EU Laws ** UK businesses and unions are urging the government not to scrap a range of European Union laws. In a joint letter, several influential groups called on ministers to withdraw (撤) its Retained EU Law bill, warning it would put vital protections at risk. The legislation would see most EU laws expire by the end of 2023. The government says it is committed to 'taking full advantage of the benefits of Brexit'. Sally Patterson has more in London. **Egypt Announces Release of Political Activists ** Egyptian authorities have announced the release of 30 political activists from jail. The announcement late on Thursday marks the latest in a series of mass releases from detention amid intensifying international scrutiny over Egypt's human rights record. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened down 65-points this morning from Friday's close, at 13,359 on turnover of 2.5-billion N-T. The market fell by over 100-points on Friday, as other regional indexes sank again after German inflation spiked higher, Britain's Prime Minister Liz Truss defended a tax-cut plan that rattled investors and data showed that Chinese manufacturing has weakened. **More than 141,000 Free Flu Shots Administered on First Day of Rollout ** The Centers for Disease Control says more than 141,000 people received a flu shot on Saturday, when the government launched this year's free vaccination program. That figure was a 14-per cent increase from last year. C-D-C Deputy Director-General Zhuang Ren-xiang is attributing the higher number to there being less conflict with the administration of coronavirus vaccines. People being vaccinated against the coronavirus at this time last year were advised (建議) to wait at least seven days before getting a seasonal flu shot. However, the C-D-C this year has said that flu shots can be given at the same time as other vaccines, including coronavirus vaccines, but not on the same limb. **Mercury to Drop in North this Week ** The Central Weather Bureau says a seasonal northeasterly wind system is expected to begin affecting (影響) the north from Wednesday - when daytime temperatures are expected to drop by between 7 and 8 degrees. According to the weather bureau, the mercury in northern Taiwan is forecast to range from between 25 and 26 degrees - and that'll be a marked decline from the daytime highs of 34 to 35 degrees seen over the past week. The seasonal northeasterly wind is also expected to bring brief showers to areas north of Taoyuan as well as to northeastern Taiwan, while sporadic rainfall is forecast for Hualien and Taitung from Wednesday. Those weather conditions will last into the weekend. **Haiti Sees Cholera Outbreak ** Haiti's government says at least eight people have died from cholera for the first time in three years. The cases are raising concerns about another potential catastrophic epidemic like the one that broke out a decade ago and killed nearly 10,000 people. The cases were reported in a community in southern Port-au-Prince and in a seaside slum (貧民窟) where thousands of people live in cramped, unsanitary conditions. The deaths announced Sunday come as a lack of fuel and ongoing protests shut down the availability of basic services across Haiti, including medical care and clean water, which is key to helping fight cholera and keep patients alive. **Brazil Presidential Candidates Head into Runoff Vote ** Brazil's top two presidential candidates will face each other in a runoff vote after neither got enough support to win outright. With 98.8% of the votes tallied on Sunday's election, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had 48% support. Incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro had 43.6% support. Brazil's election authority said the result made a second round vote between the two candidates a mathematical certainty (必然的事). Nine other candidates were also competing. **King Charles Not to Attend Climate Summit ** King Charles III has decided not to attend (參加) the international climate change summit in Egypt next month. It's called The Speeder. 創造這種摩托車的美國公司,今年二月已經讓它試飛過,它可以在街上跑,也可以飛上青天。 The company is making three kinds of flying motorcycles. But you need a lot of training to fly that one. You need to have a pilot's license to fly it. 其中一種飛行時速可以超過240公里,但是需要特別執照才能駕駛。 The Speeder is expensive, though. It costs about $380,000 U.S. dollars. That's over $10 million NT! 這個 Speeder 的價錢很貴喔!一輛要價38萬美金,那是一千萬台幣! I guess I'll have to watch other people riding them in the sky. ________________________________ Vocabulary 昂貴的飛天摩托車,究竟要給誰來騎呢? 1. Marco Casagrande, Finland, Shenzhen Marco Casagrande (born 1971) graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology Department of Architecture in 2001. From the early stages of his career Casagrande started to mix architecture with other disciplines of art and science landing with a series of ecologically conscious architectural installations around the world. All in all, more than 86 realized works in 16 countries. He is the laureate of the European Prize for Architecture 2013, Committee of International Architecture Critics CICA Award 2013 for conceptual and artistic architecture and UNESCO & Locus Foundation's Global Award for Sustainable Architecture 2015. Casagrande's works and teaching are moving freely in-between architecture, landscape architecture, urban and environmental design and science, environmental art and circus adding up into cross-over architectural thinking of «commedia dell'architettura», a broad vision of built human environment tied into social drama and environmental awareness. «There is no other reality than nature». He views architects as design shamans merely interpreting what the bigger nature of the shared mind is transmitting. He views cities as complex energy organisms in which different overlapping layers of energy flows are determining the actions of the citizens as well as the development of the city. By mixing environmentalism and urban design Casagrande is developing methods of punctual manipulation of the urban energy flows in order to create an ecologically sustainable urban development towards the so-called Third Generation City. The theory views the future urban development as the ruin of the industrial city, an organic machine ruined by nature including human nature. Urban Acupuncture: a cross-over architectural manipulation of the collective sensuous intellect of a city. The City is viewed as a multi-dimensional sensitive energy-organism, a living environment. Urban acupuncture aims into a touch with this nature. UA: Sensitivity to understand the energy flows of the collective chi beneath the visual city and reacting on the hot spots of this chi. Architecture as environmental art is in the position to produce the acupuncture needles for the urban chi. A weed will root into the smallest crack in the asphalt and eventually break the city. Urban acupuncture is the weed, and the acupuncture point is the crack. The possibility of the impact is total, connecting human nature as part of nature. The theory opens the door for uncontrolled creativity and freedom. Ruin is something man-made having become part of nature. Casagrande has been teaching in 65 academic institutions in 25 countries since the year 2000 including the Aalto University, Helsinki University of Art and Design, Tokyo University Tadao Ando Laboratory and China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He was a visiting professor at the Bergen School of Architecture 2001–2004 and Taiwanese Tamkang University Department of Architecture 2004-2009, Principal of the independent cross-disciplinary research centre Ruin Academy in Taipei and Taitung, Taiwan (2010 -) and Artena, Italy (2013 -) in cooperation with the Aalto University's SGT Sustainable Global Technologies Centre. Casagrande is the Vice-President of the International Society of Biourbanism (2014 -). Currently he holds the professorship of architecture at the Bergen School of Architecture, Norway. Marco Casagrande is the Principal of the Casagrande Laboratory (2003-), a Finland based internationally operating multi-disciplinary architecture and innovation office. I wrote about this saying, Sometimes You Gotta Go Back To Go Forward, a saying that Bob shared with me from his teacher, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen. The embryological movement sequences he teaches allow us to go back before the trauma and fully embody our whole selves. His healing work that combines energy, movement, ancient tradition and embryology is a wonderful mix that is healing and stimulating.

On air November 11th, 2019. Recorded November 8th, 2019. Chander Tseng originally hails from Taitung, Taiwan, but his upbringing in this small, quiet coastal city bore a classic hallmark of any American childhood: watching Disney movies. Through films like The Lion King and Aladdin, Chander developed an interest and keen ear for English language at a young age, which eventually blossomed into a professional and academic obsession with English and second language acquisition. Today, Chander currently instructs academic ESL full-time to international graduate students in preparation of their graduate studies at Adelphi University. He is passionate about translating theories and strategies of second language education into classroom practices. Chander holds degrees in Foreign Languages and Literatures and Applied Linguistics from National Taiwan University and Columbia University. We talk a bit about our shared experiences traveling Taiwan together as college students with the Taiwan-America Student Conference (taiwan-america.org), his time as an English teacher at a public Taiwanese high school, how his passion and proficiency in English began, and so much more. If you're an ESL teacher or if you're someone who speaks English as a second language, this episode is for you.
