California has been grappling with the impact of wildfires and a big shift to renewable generation, and now faces the prospect of rising power demand from electrification and data centers.In this episode, host Ed Crooks and regular guest Amy Myers Jaffe of NYU talk to Elliot Mainzer, President and CEO of the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), to dig into how the state is tackling those challenges.California's electricity prices have nearly doubled in eight years, rising to about 32 cents per kilowatt hour for residential customers. Affordability has become a political flashpoint, as it has in many other parts of the US, and other countries around the world. Elliot explains how CAISO is using reforms of transmission planning and interconnection queues to help “bend the cost curve” downwards.The discussion also covers an important shift that is now under way in western power markets. Governor Gavin Newsom of California recently signed AB 825, advancing an independent regional governance structure for the emerging extended day-ahead market. Jasmine Crockett's launch ad did exactly what it was designed to do: dominate the conversation. It's a sparse spot — just Donald Trump's voice calling her “low IQ” while she slowly turns to camera and smiles—but the message is unmistakable. She's positioning herself as the fighter, the foil to Trump, the progressive star ready-made for the national stage. Whether you think the ad is brilliant, asinine, or somewhere in between, the confidence behind it is unmistakable. This is a politician who believes the moment belongs to her.And the moment may actually be hers. Crockett's entrance triggered the first major domino: Colin Allred is out. Allred saw exactly what was coming: a three-way field in which he was slowly slipping into fourth place, with poll numbers showing Crockett and state representative James Talarico dramatically outpacing him. In politics, you can bow out early or you can be forced out late. Allred chose the former and retreated to a reelection bid for his House seat. It was one of the rare cases of a politician reading a bad hand correctly before the stakes got worse.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. And Talarico's opening move — a polite welcome video directed at Crockett — landed with a thud. If Crockett walks into a room like a lightning bolt, Talarico walked in like a guidance counselor. He cannot afford to make this a personality contest. Crockett thrives in personality contests. If he wants to win, he has to make this about message, not magnetism. The question haunting Texas Democrats for years — can a centrist survive a primary built to reward progressives? — will finally get an answer.Democrats dreaming of flipping Texas understand the trap. Yes, Crockett is electrifying. Yes, she's a rising star. But statewide politics in Texas is still shaped by a conservative-leaning bloc of independents who view her as too far to the left. Early polling from the University of Houston and Texas Southern University shows both Crockett and Talarico losing to Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton, who was impeached by his own staff, dogged by scandal, and widely regarded as too extreme even by many Republicans. Yet he leads both Democrats by narrow margins.That tells you everything about the strategic stakes. If Democrats nominate a progressive firebrand, even a wounded Republican like Paxton becomes viable. And the fear for Democratic strategists is simple: the moment Crockett wins the nomination, a large number of center-right independents will default to whoever the GOP nominates. That's the shadow hanging over her rise. Her path to the nomination is the clearest. Her path to victory in November may be the hardest.Republicans: A Primary That Shouldn't Be Close, But IsOn the Republican side, the Senate primary is turning into its own demolition derby. For months, John Cornyn seemed secure: the senior statesman, the institutional favorite, the known quantity. But recent polling shows Cornyn clinging to a razor-thin lead over Paxton, with Representative Wesley Hunt sitting as a serious third-place contender. Hunt's entry infuriated the Cornyn team, and with good reason — Hunt is young, popular, and ideologically aligned with the party's post-Trump base in ways Cornyn simply isn't.Paxton, meanwhile, remains the wildcard. He survived impeachment by leaning entirely on his loyalty to Trump, and the MAGA base has rewarded him for it. On November 29, 2025, 19-year-old Texas A&M student Brianna Aguilera was found dead outside a 17-story apartment building in Austin, Texas. She had been in town for the Texas vs. Texas A&M rivalry game, staying with friends at the 21 Rio apartments near the UT campus. Within days, Austin Police held a rare press conference to announce they were treating her death as a suicide - citing a deleted suicide note found on her phone, text messages indicating suicidal thoughts, and prior statements to friends. They say all evidence points away from foul play. But Brianna's family isn't buying it. Her mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, has publicly accused police of a rushed investigation and believes someone in that apartment is responsible for her daughter's death. She says Brianna was afraid of heights, was actively planning her future, and would never have taken her own life. The family has now retained high-profile attorney Tony Buzbee to pursue their own investigation. The questions are piling up: Why wasn't the mother notified for almost 15 hours? What happened in the two minutes between Brianna's phone call with her boyfriend and the 911 call? Why did none of the three women in the apartment see or hear anything? And what about the witness who says she heard screaming and running that night? Adding another layer to this case: another Texas A&M student, Grant Hernandez, died at the exact same apartment complex in 2019 under strikingly similar circumstances. His death was also ruled a suicide. His father says he never got the answers he wanted. Episode 307 is the twentieth  episode of our mini-series on the Tippit murder.  David Belin, the celebrated Warren Commission attorney called  it the "Rosetta Stone" of the JFK assassination. It may very well be just that...but for other reasons! In  this  twentieth episode, we tell the story of Igor Vaganov. a Russian-born émigré who was present in Dallas, Texas, during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963.  In this episode, we detail Vaganov's history, including his Navy service, marksmanship skills, use of aliases, and criminal record, noting his hasty arrival in Dallas just days before the event. Researchers highlight several coincidences, such as Vaganov's residency in Oak Cliff near key figures like Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby, his brief employment next door to the Carousel Club, and his ownership of firearms and a modified CB radio potentially useful for communications jamming. Furthermore, the sources focus heavily on Vaganov's unaccounted-for whereabouts during the time of the assassination and the murder of Officer J.D. Tippit, noting his description matched an eyewitness account of an accomplice. While Vaganov was quickly cleared by the FBI, his actions, the presence of cryptic notes and a torn playing card, and subsequent investigative focus keep him a subject of interest in JFK conspiracy theories. Yes…there is a grave possibility that the true "Rosetta Stone" of November 22nd, 1963, might just lie in the quiet Dallas suburb of Oak Cliff, waiting for us to finally put the pieces together.
