A Note from James:Tony Hawk is one of the greatest athletes of all time—but what fascinates me most isn't just the tricks. It's the mindset.Tony didn't just become the best skateboarder in the world. He built an entire ecosystem around what he loved: competitions, companies, tours, sponsorships, and one of the most successful video game franchises ever created. What's interesting is that none of it was planned that way. It came from constant experimentation, falling—literally—and getting back up again. In this episode, Tony talks about the path to excellence, how he handled criticism and failure, the moment he finally landed the legendary 900 trick, and how skateboarding evolved from an underground subculture into a global industry.Episode Description:Tony Hawk didn't just change skateboarding—he helped transform it into a global cultural phenomenon. In this archival conversation, Tony shares the real story behind his career: learning to master fear, surviving the ups and downs of a niche sport, and eventually building a massive business empire around skateboarding. He explains how passion drove him through the lean years when skateboarding almost disappeared, why constant experimentation helped him stay at the top, and how a combination of timing, risk-taking, and creative control led to the success of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game franchise. The conversation also explores the legendary moment when he landed the first successful 900, the importance of protecting your brand, and why mastery often comes from relentless curiosity rather than natural talent. What You'll Learn:Why pursuing passion—even during downturns—can create long-term successHow failure and repetition build elite skill in any disciplineWhy protecting your brand and intellectual control matters in businessHow the 900 trick became one of the most iconic moments in sports historyWhy continuous learning and experimentation are essential for staying relevantTimestamped Chapters:[00:02:00] The Physics of Skateboarding & Learning Through Failure[00:03:12] Introduction[00:03:38] Developing Air Awareness in Skateboarding[00:04:10] The First Time Going Airborne in a Pool[00:05:05] Learning How to Fall Safely[00:06:19] Aging, Risk & Walking Away from Mega Ramps[00:07:17] Skateboarding's Rebellious Origins[00:08:00] Creativity and Individual Style in Skate Culture[00:09:00] Advice for Pursuing Excellence[00:10:00] Learning Every Aspect of an Industry[00:11:35] Skateboarding's Collapse in the Early '90s[00:12:33] Becoming a Professional Skater[00:14:02] Mentorship from Stacy Peralta[00:15:13] Going Broke During Skateboarding's Down Years[00:16:29] Skating Parking Lot Shows for $100 a Day[00:17:31] The X Games and Skateboarding's Comeback[00:18:45] The Video Game That Changed Everything[00:19:31] When Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Became “The Game”[00:20:24] Lessons from Skateboarding Applied to Business[00:21:17] A Failed High-End Denim Business[00:22:43] Being Called a Sellout[00:24:00] Protecting Your Brand and Reputation[00:25:13] Creating Tony Hawk's Pro Skater[00:26:20] Designing the Game Mechanics[00:27:20] The Long Road to the 900[00:29:35] Landing the 900 at the X Games[00:31:08] Becoming Tony Hawk Inc.[00:32:21] The Importance of Total Immersion[00:33:29] Designing the Downward Spiral Ramp[00:35:24] Advice for Raising a Passionate Kid[00:38:12] Business Advice from Tony Hawk's Sister[00:40:29] Working with Family[00:43:04] Why Some Athletes Fade After Success[00:44:28] Clearing Up the 900 Controversy[00:48:00] The Hoverboard PrankAdditional Resources:Official Tony HawkTony Hawk's™ Pro Skater™ 3 + 4Bones Brigade: An AutobiographyRiley Hawk on InstagramSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

One of the greatest lessons I've been gifted as host of Chatter That Matters is seeing how much impact one individual can have when they choose purpose over comfort. This episode is a powerful reminder of that truth. At the centre is Tim Cormode, whose life changed during a moment of stillness alone on a glacier. That clarity led him to build Power to Be, using nature as a pathway to dignity, confidence, and possibility for people told their limits were fixed. Tim shares what two decades in the charitable sector taught him, not just about impact but about what is broken in how we give, from fear of risk to a scarcity mindset that holds good organizations back. That experience sparked his next chapter, Power to Give, a bold rethinking of philanthropy rooted in trust, shared resources, and treating generosity as the investment it truly is. From a kayak on the water to a small-town skate park that drew an unexpected visit from Tony Hawk, Tim's story shows what becomes possible when imagination meets action. The conversation then widens with Andrea Barrack, Senior Vice President of Corporate Citizenship and ESG at RBC. Andrea shares how RBC's new Purpose Framework is turning values into action. With a $2 billion commitment by 2035, RBC is focused on skills for a changing world and more equitable prosperity. If you believe impact is built by people, not slogans, and that purpose is found by doing, not saying, you will love this episode as much as I did making it.
Welcome to Episode 151 of Nintendo Therapy, the show where we break down the latest Nintendo news and rumors while celebrating everything that makes Nintendo… Nintendo. This week, we circle back to a few follow-ups from last episode — including a change of heart on the best remake (spoiler: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 rules), a closer look at Nintendo's very deliberate drip-feeding of Virtual Boy games on Nintendo Classics, and a deep dive into the increasingly questionable logic of Nintendo timelines. Kevin also lays out an ambitious goal for 2026: playing through the Metroid series in timeline order… assuming any of it actually happened.Meanwhile, Harrison brings a brand-new segment to the table: “Two Are Canon, One Is Fake.” No prep, no mercy, and a graphic already locked and loaded.Nintendo Therapy Podcast is part of the Sidepanel Network. Acefield Retro and Chad are back for Wrestling Tonight, and Episode 150 lands during one of the biggest weeks of the year. AEW is heading to Greensboro next Wednesday for Blood and Guts, live on TBS and HBO Max, with an expanded two-and-a-half-hour broadcast that feels closer to a pay-per-view than a weekly show. Hangman Page does battle against Powerhouse Hobbs in a Falls Count Anywhere match, the fifth men's Blood and Guts takes place, and for the first time ever, the women get their turn inside the cage. Greensboro isn't just another stop—it's the birthplace of WarGames, and AEW is honoring that legacy with a lineup that blends history, chaos, and spectacle. While AEW doubles down on its roots, WWE is rewriting its global playbook. Beginning in 2026, the company will run three Premium Live Events in Saudi Arabia, starting with Royal Rumble: Riyadh. The strategy is paying off in a big way. WWE officially surpassed UFC in both revenue and profit this quarter, powered by massive site fees and fewer but bigger shows. Nick Khan calls it "strategic scarcity," and the numbers prove him right. Fewer events, fuller arenas, higher prices, and bigger energy. Triple H continues to steer creative toward long-term storytelling, trading shock moments for layered narratives. The road to WrestleMania 43 runs through Montreal, Riyadh, and San Diego, with each stop feeling like a blockbuster on its own. Chelsea Green might be the story of the week. She reclaimed the Women's United States Championship on SmackDown, just days after winning the AAA Mixed Tag Titles with Ethan Page. Her rise from comic relief to crossover champion shows how WWE's new era is connecting international stories with mainline programming. AEW stirred its own headlines by unveiling the National Championship, sparking backlash from the NWA, who claim Tony Khan hijacked their legacy. Legal battles, brand pride, and a healthy dose of ego are turning a simple belt unveiling into one of the year's most intriguing real-world rivalries. Behind the scenes, AEW quietly moved its training and storage hub from Florida to Nashville, signaling a shift in infrastructure. Darby Allin celebrated a personal milestone as his long-awaited skatepark project with Tony Hawk was approved in Georgia, turning his offbeat persona into a real community legacy. In WWE, Drew McIntyre's meltdown and suspension following his attack on Cody Rhodes showed how fragile redemption arcs can be, while Ridge Holland's early release after his injury highlighted the harsh business side of the sport. And in Japan, the biggest emotional announcement of the year became official. Kazuchika Okada will face Hiroshi Tanahashi in Tanahashi's retirement match at Wrestle Kingdom 20. It's the final chapter in one of wrestling's greatest rivalries, a torch-passing moment that connects generations and promotions across the world. Outside the ring, the sports world is battling its own integrity crisis. The UFC is under FBI investigation for another betting scandal, and NBA figures like Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier were charged in a federal gambling probe. These headlines cast a long shadow over sports entertainment as TKO navigates its dual ownership of WWE and UFC. As gambling expands across platforms, the line between competition and speculation grows thinner. Protecting legitimacy will matter just as much as growing profit. Episode 150 captures wrestling at a crossroads. AEW is refining its identity, WWE is globalizing its empire, and TKO is turning the entire industry into a corporate powerhouse. The business is bigger than ever, but it's still driven by the same thing that always made it work—real stories, human stakes, and the pull of seeing what happens next. Today, we're talking with Dave Lee, the creative engineer and co-creator of Cardboard Sessions, the viral series where paper becomes possibility. In each episode, top-tier artists step into the studio to create unrehearsed sonic magic using fully playable instruments made entirely out of cardboard.Dave on YouTube @cardboardsessions on Instagram From cardboard Stratocasters and Telecasters to full drum kits, Dave and his team turn imagination into reality, documenting the process in stunning behind-the-scenes videos that blend art, science, and pure creative courage. The Spark of Cardboard ChaosDave, where did this idea begin—what first made you look at cardboard and think, “let's make a snowboard, a guitar, or a pair of Vans out of this”? What was the creative leap from Cardboard Chaos to Cardboard Sessions?Engineering Meets ArtYou've built fully playable instruments out of cardboard—something that sounds impossible until people see and hear it. If you've ever looked at an everyday object and thought, ‘What if we made this out of cardboard?'—Dave's probably already done it. Your creative journey—from Cardboard Chaos experiments to collaborations with icons like Tony Hawk, Marcus King, and Keanu Reeves—proves that true innovation often starts with the simplest materials and the boldest questions. I was watching the Cardboard Session with Peter Yorn -- How do you and your team balance the technical precision of engineering with the spontaneity of creative experimentation? The Magic of Unrehearsed MusicEach Cardboard Session is unrehearsed, unfiltered, and full of creative risk. What do you think happens to artists when the normal studio structure disappears and they're just responding to the moment—with instruments made of paper?Collaboration and Creative FlowYou've brought in everyone from ZZ Top to Marcus King to Keanu Reeves.
