We catch up with Vanguard's senior ETF capital market specialist David Sharp who is based in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.  David sheds some light on whether throughout history federal elections have affected market returns. And how a passive index fund manager like Vanguard has stayed the distance over nearly 50 years.  We delve into what constitutes the flagship Vanguard S&P 500 exchange-traded-fund, more commonly known as VOO.  Plus what the phrase ‘Voo and chill' has come to mean.  And while Investing in US ETFs offers scale and diversification, there's volatility to contend with too.   For more—check out http://linktr.ee/sharedlunch Shared Lunch is brought to you by Sharesies Limited (NZ) in New Zealand and Sharesies Australia Limited (ABN 94 648 811 830; AFSL 529893) (collectively referred to as ‘Sharesies').  Appearance on Shared Lunch is not an endorsement by Sharesies of the views of the presenters, guests, or the entities they represent. Near the summit of Mount Everest in the death zone on the ridge of the north face there is a shallow cave, known infamously to all who climb there as the location where in 1996 an Indian man named Tsewang Paljor lay down to rest and never got up again. That man is referred to as green boots. Almost exactly ten years later, on the morning of May 14, 2006 a small team of mountaineers climbing toward the summit were surprised to find another climber seated there, barely alive sitting next to green boots. It was one of the coldest nights of the season. The man in the cave was David Sharp, an English mountaineer who was on his third expedition to Everest. During the time David Sharp* was sitting in the cave many people passed by, thinking there was nothing they could do to help. News of this reached the outside world and soon an international furor erupted over the death of David Sharp. Even Sir Edmund Hillary weighed in, outraged at the incident. This is the story of David Sharp.Support the show

Will we ever see an automotive retailer create a technology stack that they sell to OEMs and other retailers? Never say never!

Something you might not appreciate about climbing Everest is... it's a bit fiddly. Lethally fiddly. And lethally chilly. And lethally tiring. In fact that 4% of people die while doing it. And in most cases, it's impossible to recover their bodies. As a result there are as many as 300 dead bodies on the mountain, including the remains of David Sharp from Teesside. In 2006 he climbed Everest at the third attempt, but on his descent cold, fatigue and darkness forced him to take shelter in a cave – and as the story goes, 40 people walked past him as he slowly froze to death, but chose to summit instead of helping him. Obviously it's a bit more nuanced than that.Inspired by last week's chat about Apaches we also remember the public information films of our era, a time when Jimmy Savile had some personal safety advice “for all you ladies” and children valued their kites and Frisbees enough to risk being blown to smithereens to retrieve them. Not like kids today!  The gang also learns the true meaning of SPLINK.Claire offers to shoot a dog for £1! Gareth is saved from third degree burns by Hale and Pace! John briefly considers making this an entirely Love Island-based podcast in an attempt to use the phrase “the Clausewitz of televised handjobs” as much as he can. Along the way: Let Loose! Episode #83 is an amazing story of Mount Everest with six time summiter and the climber leader of our 2019 expedition to search for the body of Sandy Irvine, New Zealand's Jamie McGuinness. The original intent of my interview with Jamie was to talk about the expedition of ours in 2019, which has since become a National Geographic film called Lost on Everest and is the subject of a book by NY times bestselling author Mark Synnott called THE THIRD POLE, MYSTERY OBSESSION AND DEATH ON MOUNT EVEREST….which we did talk about. However, in starting our interview I asked Jamie about what it was like working as a sherpa on expeditions back in the day. The Sherpa are incredibly strong, almost super human, adapted over centuries of living at high altitude to be stronger and faster at altitude...and Jamie joined their ranks….THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING. In explaining this, Jamie began telling me about the story of David Sharp, the English mountaineer who died near the summit of Mount Everest in 2006. His death caused controversy and debate because he was passed by a number of other climbers heading to and returning from the summit as he was dying, although a number of others tried to help him. Jamie knew David very well, and tells a full breakdown of one of the most tragic stories in recent history on Everest. In that story he also shares about the story of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber, who during that same year that David Sharp lost his life, he was reported to have died….then, miraculously, survived. Jamie was on the front line of that story. He shares about it all here, on The Happiness Quotient. Here’s my May 2nd, 2021 conversation with one of the strongest climbers from New Zealand since Sir Edmund Hillary….=========For more information about Thom Dharma Pollard:http://eyesopenproductions.com/For a free downloadable copy of A Course In Happiness:www.patreon.com/thehappinessquotientOur theme song, Happiness Jones, appears courtesy of The Wood Brothers. For more information about The Wood Brothers:https://www.thewoodbros.com/The Wood Brothers on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTvWKQovDZlLceuct1EEMMQHappiness Jones video can be seen here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKIoiVWwF5ASupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/thehappinessquotient)

On May 13th, 2006, British mountaineer David Sharp set out on a solitary expedition to the summit of Mount Everest. Though an experienced hobbyist climber, David never made it back down the mountain and is thought to have died on the 15th of May, 2006, at age 34. Whether he reached the peak is unknown. Ascending and descending Mount Everest is extraordinarily dangerous; people die nearly every year climbing the mountain, bringing the total recorded death count to over 300 people. But David Sharp’s death, in particular, stirred controversy as several climbing expeditions passed him and did not — or were unable to — help him. In this episode, we discuss the industry that has risen around climbing Mount Everest, the ethical responsibility to help those in need, and how — even on the world’s tallest mountain — capitalism encourages us to leave our brothers and sisters behind.  How a sunken nuclear submarine, a crazy billionaire, and a mechanical claw gave birth to a phrase that has hounded journalists and lawyers for 40 years and embodies the tension between the public’s desire for transparency and the government’s need to keep secrets.   Whether it comes from government spokespeople or celebrity publicists, the phrase “can neither confirm nor deny” is the perfect non-denial denial. It’s such a perfect deflection that it seems like it’s been around forever, but reporter Julia Barton takes us back to the 1970s and the surprising origin story of what’s now known as a “Glomar Response.” With help from David Sharp and Walt Logan, we tell the story of a clandestine CIA operation to lift a sunken Soviet submarine from the ocean floor and the dilemma they faced when the world found out about it.   In the 40 years since that operation, the Glomar Response has become boilerplate language from an array of government agencies. With help from ProPublica editor Jeff Larson and NPR’s Dina Temple-Raston, we explore the implications of this ultimate information dodge. ACLU lawyer Jameel Jaffer explains how it stymies oversight, and we learn that, even 40 years later, governmental secrecy can be emotionally painful.   After listening to the story ...    After 40 years, many of the details of Project Azorian are only now coming to light. The US government’s default position has been to keep as much of it classified as possible. It took three years for retired CIA employee David Sharp to get permission to publish his account of Project Azorian. And FOIA played an indirect role in that, as Cold War historians got the CIA to release, in redacted form, an internal history of the mission. After that and a threat of legal action, Sharp was finally able to publish his manuscript in 2012.   We mentioned conspiracy theories that have swirled around Project Azorian filling the void where official silence has reigned. One of them is promulgated in the 2005 book “Red Star Rogue” by Kenneth Sewell and Clint Richmond. They posit that the K-129 was taken over by rogue Stalinist KGB agents in order to start a nuclear conflict. But the conflict was to be between the US and China, as, according to the authors, the sub had powers to disguise its sonic signature as a Chinese Navy vessel.   This book is the basis of the 2013 drama “Phantom,” which features Ed Harris and David Duchovny as Soviet military officers who sip vodka in a very un-Russian way.   Russian Naval historians, like Nikolai Cherkashin, are not only insulted by this take on the cause of the K-129’s demise, they say the true cause is much easier to pinpoint: They say an American vessel, possibly the USS Swordfish, collided with the Soviet submarine.    Despite the fact that the US government has turned over many documents about Project Azorian and what it found to the Russian government, many in the Russian Navy stand by their theory that it was far too easy for the US to locate the K-129 on the bottom of the Pacific, given the technology of the time. According to these theories, Project Azorian was nothing more than an elaborate cover-up disguised as... an elaborate cover-up. We can neither confirm nor deny that we exactly understand how that would have worked in practice or execution.   But for our money, there’s probably no stranger and more telling document from this time than a video of the funeral at sea for Soviet sailors ostensibly recovered by the US during Project Azorian. Audio of the service starts at 1:25 in this post. Eulogies and rites are performed in both English and Russian (albeit with an American accent).   It’s one of the more solemn moments of the Cold War, and one that the Glomar Response helped keep a secret for a very long time.
