We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Stax legend David Porter.ABOUT DAVID PORTER Named one of Rolling Stone magazine's “100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time,” Porter is best known for his songwriting partnership with Isaac Hayes that helped define the sound of Memphis's legendary Stax Records. As the first African American staff songwriter at Stax, Porter, along with his partner, wrote and produced songs such as “B-A-B-Y” for Carla Thomas, “Your Good Thing (Is About to End)”—an R&B hit for Mable John that later became a pop and R&B smash for Lou Rawls, and his own recording of “Can't See You When I Want To.” Hayes and Porter are best known, however, for their work with Sam & Dave, including such classic hits as “You Don't Know Like I Know,” “You Got Me Hummin',” “Hold On! I'm Comin'” (which later became a country hit for Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed), “Soul Man” (which became a hit a second time thanks to the Blues Brothers), “I Thank You” (which was later covered by ZZ Top), and “When Something is Wrong with My Baby” (which was reimagined as a memorable duet between Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, a country hit for Sonny James, and an adult contemporary hit for Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville). The list of artists who've covered Porter's songs includes Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, William Bell, Melissa Ethridge, Bonnie Raitt, Garth Brooks, Etta James, Celine Dion, Wilson Pickett, George Benson, Dusty Springfield, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Staple Singers, Solomon Burke, James Brown, Eric Clapton, B. B. King, Tina Turner, Jackie Wilson, and more. His songs have been used as samples in countless recordings by artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G., Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, and others. A highly celebrated giant among celebrated songwriters, Porter was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Just in time for Halloween, we're hosting a virtual hauntology reading group (specifically, hauntology the music genre) at 4pm ET next Thursday, October 30. If you want to join in, sign up for a paid subscription, or toss a few bucks into our haunted tip jar, and we'll send you the readings and a link to log into the conversation. We hope it'll be the first of more group reading sessions to come.We spend a lot of time here talking about the structural forces that turned pop culture into an endless churn of sequels, remakes, and nostalgia plays. But what if the blame for our current “creative recession” lies on more than just economics or platforms? What if our cultural values themselves have shifted in ways that make true innovation harder to sustain? That's the focus of Blank Space: A Cultural History of the Twenty-First Century, the forthcoming book from Tokyo-based culture critic W. David Marx—and probably the first major exhaustive account of the last 25 years in music, film/TV, internet culture, and fashion. He doesn't just look at the technological, political, and economic forces that that created a winner-take-all landscape where billionaires and centi-millionaires like Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Paris Hilton, MrBeast, Jay-Z and frankly Donald Trump took up all of the cultural oxygen in the room, making it harder and harder for the next generation of innovators to break through. He zeroes in on the cultural attitudes that have led us here—and that set us apart from our 20th-century forebears—including poptimism, the valorization of entrepreneurial heroism, cultural omnivorism, and more.In addition to Blank Space, David the author of the mega-influential books Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change and Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style. He joins us to talk about the mind-boggling task of summing up the past quarter-century of culture, and why most of the coolest, most innovative outputs ended up getting pushed to the margins. We also get into what originality means in a climate of constant churn, and why he believes that fighting for it is still important, even in a postmodern landscape where “everything has already been done.”Finally, David makes the case that building a healthier cultural ecosystem starts with changing our cultural attitudes. That means embracing and reinforcing social norms that have fallen to the wayside in the past quarter century, like normalizing giving credit to smaller artists, learning the canon so we can break it, and yes, making it lame to sell out again.Pre-order Blank Space, which is out November 18 via Penguin Random House. Well, design, beauty, how to find good ideas. You'll notice when you pick up one of his books that the form, the style, the vibe, the typography is every bit as important as the content. The NFL, in partnership with Apple Music, made the announcement in late September, setting the stage for what promises to be an explosive, globally watched performance. In his statement released by the NFL, Bad Bunny dedicated the honor to his community, his culture, and the legacy of those who paved the road for Latin artists, saying what he's experiencing “transcends my individual journey” and highlighting the broader impact for Puerto Rican and Latin American communities.Online and in mainstream outlets, the news immediately set off a firestorm of debate. Some critics, especially among right-wing media and political commentators, have reacted negatively to Bad Bunny's selection as Super Bowl headliner. The criticisms have focused on his use of Spanish in his music—with some arguing that a Super Bowl show in anything but English is un-American—as well as his outspoken criticism of certain U.S. administrations, particularly Donald Trump's. Outlets like The Benny Show and commentators such as Corey Lewandowski and Kristi Noem described Bad Bunny's performance as “shameful,” and Turning Point USA has announced a rival “All-American Halftime Show” as a form of protest. Meanwhile, a petition is circulating, mostly among country music fans, to replace Bad Bunny with George Strait—though it's not being taken seriously in music circles and is considered highly unlikely.Bad Bunny's fans and supporters are rallying behind him on social media, with many emphasizing that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and praising the way his music brings Latin culture to the global stage. For defenders, his selections as headliner is not just deserved, but overdue. Jay-Z, who is involved with NFL halftime show curation, stated he feels “privileged” to have Bad Bunny on “the largest platform in the world,” calling his achievements major for Puerto Rico and Latin music in general.Adding to the drama, Bad Bunny's decision not to perform tour dates in the United States this year has also garnered attention. According to USA Today, he made this choice to protect his largely Latin fanbase, expressing concern that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities at concerts could harm his fans. Rumors have even circulated online that ICE will be present at the Super Bowl, though media sources suggest these are little more than conspiracy talk designed to stoke controversy.Musically, Bad Bunny continues to dominate. His sixth studio album, “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS,” released earlier this year, is being hailed as one of 2025's best pop releases. With 17 tracks blending traditional Puerto Rican genres like plena and salsa with modern reggaeton and Latin pop, critics are celebrating the album's powerful nostalgia and social commentary. The song “DtMF” has hit over a billion streams on Spotify and spawned a viral TikTok trend centered on nostalgia and regret, with users posting cherished photos to the track's chorus. His recent performances in Puerto Rico have generated major economic boosts for the island, and his influence runs so deep that universities such as Emory and Yale have launched courses centered on his cultural impact. With only a few months left in 2025, Bad Bunny is more than a pop star—he is an evolving, influential force in music and culture. Listeners are connecting not just to his beats, but to his vision and message, and his reach has never been greater.Thank you for tuning in. Come back next week for more. In this solo episode of the Ern & Iso Podcast, Iso takes it back to his favorite era of hip-hop — what he calls “Dungeons and Dragons Rap.”
Jay-Z's attorney, Alex Spiro, is actively working to discredit recent allegations linking Jay-Z to Sean "Diddy" Combs in a sexual assault lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed by attorney Tony Buzbee on behalf of an unnamed woman, claims that Jay-Z and Combs sexually assaulted her in 2000 when she was 13 years old. Spiro has labeled these allegations as "provably, demonstrably false," highlighting inconsistencies in the accuser's account, such as the non-existent location of the alleged assault and timeline discrepancies. He argues that the claims are part of a financially motivated shakedown against Jay-Z, whose net worth exceeds $2.5 billion. In addition to challenging the lawsuit's credibility, Spiro has accused Buzbee's law firm of unethical practices. He alleges that Buzbee's firm pressured individuals to fabricate allegations against high-profile figures like Jay-Z and Diddy. For instance, Spiro claims that a woman seeking legal assistance for unrelated abuse was coerced to implicate Diddy falsely and was dropped as a client when she refused. Buzbee has denied these accusations, calling them "patently ridiculous."to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Jay Z's lawyer denies rapper's 'close association' with Diddy as he shuts down 'demonstrably false' rape claim | Daily Mail Online
Jay-Z has been named in a civil lawsuit alleging that he and Sean "Diddy" Combs raped a 13-year-old girl in 2000 after an MTV Video Music Awards after-party. The accuser, identified as Jane Doe, claims she was given a drink that made her feel disoriented before being assaulted by both men. Jay-Z has vehemently denied the allegations, describing them as a "blackmail attempt" and expressing concern over the impact on his family. In response to the lawsuit, Jay-Z's legal team has filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that the claims are baseless and part of a calculated extortion campaign. They have also requested that the accuser be publicly identified, citing the harm to Jay-Z's reputation. Additionally, Jay-Z's lawyers have sought to distance him from Combs, emphasizing that there is no close association between the two artists.(commercial at 13:08)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:
