As the USMNT prepare for their quarterfinal matchup against Costa Rica, we discuss the elements of this team that we're most intrigued by. Can Freese really win the #1 job? Can Tim Ream reestablish himself as a starting CB for World Cup '26? Can Johnny Cardoso really play for Atletico Madrid but not the US' B-Team? Plus, we compare the transfer windows thus far for the Premier League's 3 leading title contenders - Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. And finally, we analyze Brazil's standout Club World Cup as well as Argentina's disastrous one.ALSO: Head on over to Caught Offside Plus where we just released a really fun food-centric episode inspired by the hot and wild takes of Weston McKennie and Tim Weah.Just go to https://caughtoffside.supercast.com to sign up! Between 1945 and 1952, ‘happiness trains' transported 70,000 children from southern to northern Italy to live with wealthier families. It was a scheme organised by the Union of Italian Women and the Italian Communist Party in an attempt to make the lives of southern Italian children better.Ten-year-old Bianca D'Aniello was one of the passengers to travel from Salerno in the south to Mestre in the north where she was looked after by a family with more resources.Bianca's life in Mestre was miserable because of Italy's fascist regime and the devastation her city faced in the wake of World War Two. Her journey was nerve-racking as she jumped on a train for the first time saying goodbye to her mum and siblings. What she didn't realise was what life had in store for her in her new life.Bianca speaks to Natasha Fernandes about how that ‘happiness train' changed her life forever. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Children on board an Italian 'happiness train' kiss and wave goodbye to their parents. James discusses key moments from the final Group games at The Club World Cup and looks ahead to the upcoming last 16 ties. There's a focus on Manchester City and their fluidity in last night's victory over Juventus, why Chelsea will fancy their chances in the competition now, the disappointment for the Argentinian sides and why on reflection we probably should have expected their neighbours from Brazil to out perform them. Watch the full coverage of the live stream on The Emily D Baker YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/live/6U-T0fjM5MMThe post-verdict statements from jurors in the Karen Read Retrial, emphasizing the importance of juror transparency and their reasoning for the "not guilty" verdict. The jurors were described as serious, conscientious, and respectful in their deliberations, focusing on the evidence and defining each charge. There are concerns that threats and harassment against jurors could discourage future citizens from serving, suggesting that juror lists should be sealed by default to protect their privacy unless they choose to come forward. The initial, withdrawn verdict was due to one male juror having doubts at lunch, asking if he could take back his vote, but later confirming "Okay, guilty of OUI."Juror #1 aka The Foreperson, stated there was no single moment that solidified guilt, and the evidence presented was "paper-thin," failing to bring comfort to the victim's family. He highlighted the struggle to reconcile sympathy for the victim's family with the lack of sufficient evidence for a conviction. He worked really hard to make sure that all of the jurors felt heard and confident with their decision.Juror #11, addressed accusations from "internet trolls," clarifying she is an attorney in Brazil but not the US, and her interest in true crime was focused on Brazilian cases, hence her unfamiliarity with the Read case before jury duty. She expressed happiness that Karen Read would not go to jail for something she didn't do, but also anger that John O'Keefe's fate remains unknown. She also confirmed they were largely unaware of the large crowds and chanting outside the courthouse due to precautions taken by jury officers and entering through the back. This reinforces that external pressure did not influence their deliberations.Juror #12 initially leaned towards "guilty" but changed her mind after reviewing the evidence, not finding a specific piece of information she was looking for. She wouldn't share what that evidence was.An anonymous juror spoke with the media and mentioned that during deliberations, they started making more progress when they got "huge poster board paper." They then worked with other members of the jury to write down the definition of every charge on the poster board, essentially workshopping the jury instructions.Despite the challenges, jurors' willingness to speak out fosters transparency and highlights that jurors genuinely strive to make the right decisions based on the evidence presented.RESOURCESJune 24 Live Stream - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7IdKgUQoDUThe Ghislane Maxwell Case - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsbUyvZas7gL31tnzpu6Du3wLHoQRaIq8Foreperson on w/ Today Show - https://youtu.be/nE-a9MR1oUMJuror #12 on WCVB - https://youtu.be/-Tfoc0OvOf0Anonymous Juror on NBC 10 - https://youtu.be/Vi8bkGvciaIJuror #11 on WBZ - https://youtu.be/Qx9KONKG6REThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Spotify Ad Analytics - https://www.spotify.com/us/legal/ad-analytics-privacy-policy/Podscribe -...
When the Medellin Metro opened in 1995, the Colombian city had recently been called the “murder capital of the world” due to the high homicide rate caused by Pablo Escobar's drug wars. The network has grown to include a large cable car network which stretches to the neighbourhoods built into the sides of mountains that surround Medellin. It has helped transform the city into a tourist hot-spot – something unimaginable 30 years ago. Tim O'Callaghan has been speaking to Tomas Andreas Elejalde, who is the general manager of the Metro. Completely new universes and deeper awarenesses can arise when we gather in sacred intimate conversations. That's why this podcast is in its 13th season! I knew how grateful I am for Marina's videography and photography at my last 4-5 retreats. I'm aware of how inspired I am at the personal, parental, spiritual and professional evolution I've witnessed coaching her and the gift of her vulnerability to our coaching community. I'm grateful for the contribution of her mastery in the realm of water rituals for my clients at retreats. However it wasn't until we sat down for this podcast that we really felt the massive impact of all these years working together, the impact on our friendship, sisterhood, professional relationship, personal and collective evolution. It's so good to reflect! Without reflection, the profound impact of these experiences stay concealed, like a hidden ripe fruit that we never got to sink our teeth into! Syncing our teeth into our glorious journey together, we also discussed... -How the first time I hired her, a client had made unconscious comment that pierced Marina's heart and I made sure to address it, integrate it and include her in the group's transformation- she felt safe and seen. -How exquisite it was to have her lead a couples water ritual in Costa Rica utilizing underwater photography and community to further bond and celebrate sacred partnership (setting the stage for a secret engagement proposal!) -How a client also in the film industry, publicly honored all the work Marina had done, the work of 7 to 10 people, and how extraordinary she is flowing in and out of her masculine and feminine energies -How our trust has grown over the years such that she stepped into support a client during a process where I was helping someone else. We felt each other having each other's back in combined service to my community- what a gift. -How we are no different than any other relationship, having a rupture that we repaired that led to the deepest bonding we ever shared as if we were two goddesses in a temple, downloading wisdom from the cosmos sitting beside the infinity pool on the beach in Isla Mujeres. -How my mentorship as an entrepreneur, a woman several decades older than her, yet also a woman of great vulnerability, transparency and honesty, has been a safe place for her to continue to grow over time, ending an old pattern of leaving if things got uncomfortable. -How her commitment to stay year after year coaching in my community has supported her sitting in the fire in her current romantic relationship while deepening her own relationship with herself in the face of anything, so inspiring! ➡️ Go check out patreon.com/allanapratt for Exclusive content! Hello Rank Squad! It's Jack's last episode as a Bachelor, and we thought we'd take a look at some transfers to send him off blissfully into wedded life. Liverpool have signed Florian Wirtz, breaking the British Transfer Record in doing so, and we discuss his arrival at Anfield and how he might fit into Arne Slot's Champion Reds next season. That gives us a launchpad to talk about some of the other most expensive transfers in Premier League history, so we rank 2-10 (feels a bit early to judge Wirtz just yet!) in order of the value they provided for their fee and also their transformative impact on their clubs - running through some of the obvious flops, all the way to the deals which are proving worth every penny. There's also time for a little Things We Love, where Jack gives some flowers to Santi Cazorla and Real Oviedo - one of the true feel-good stories of a summer mired in controversy and differing opinions. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

The history of the Brazilian gymnastics program, from its humble beginnings in the 1970s to Olympic glory in 2024 This week's episode is a commission from our Olympic Fantasy Gymnastics winner, Liam, who wants us to discuss the history of Brazilian gymnastics. From trailblazers like Daiane dos Santos and Daniele Hypolito who put Brazilian gymnastics on the map, to the current stars, Flavia Saraiva and Rebeca Andrade. GymCastic LIVE in CHICAGO: Tickets on sale now Get Tickets Setting the Scene How the Brazilian teams of recent years embody the energy of badass, confident adult women who do gymnastics as a team sport Why we think Marta Karolyi would probably hate the 2024 Brazilian Olympic team (in the most complimentary way possible) The early days of Brazilian Gymnastics When did Brazil send its first team to Worlds? Why we need a Brazilian gymnastics shrine dedicated to Claudia Costa How did the program start gaining momentum during the 1980s? The tumultuous 1990s: from finishing dead last at 1991 Worlds, to defeating the United States at the 1997 Pan Am Championships, what was going on in these years? The Pioneers of Career Longevity Nearly every Brazilian gymnast who has ever won a World or Olympic medal has continued with the sport past age 25. What does this tell us about the program's emphasis on career longevity? What do Jade Barbosa and Oksana Chusovitina have in common? Hint: it's more than just being a great vaulter The First Stars of Brazilian Gymnastics Daniele Hypolito wins Brazil's first-ever World medal at 2001 Worlds and finishes fourth all-around How the success of 2003 Worlds put Brazil on the gymnastics map thanks to greats like Daiane dos Santos and Lais Souza Innovative skills throughout the years from Dos Santos's piked double-arabian to Oliveira's double-arabian pike half-out The Birth of a Powerhouse Brazil starts bringing foreign coaches in: Oleg Ostapenko, Iryna Illyashenko, how did this contribute to Brazil's rise? Jade Barbosa's incredible senior debut at 2007 Worlds, winning Brazil's first-ever all-around medal In 2008, the powerhouse team of Jade Barbosa, Ana Cláudia Silva, Ethiene Franco, Laís Souza, Daniele Hypólito, and Daiane dos Santos helped Brazil qualify to the Olympic team finals for the first time EVERRR Controversies and DRAAMMAA Did you know Daiane dos Santos had a 5-month ban in 2009-2010 for diuretic usage following a surgery? Jade Barbosa was taken out of the London Olympics because of a *checks notes* apparel sponsorship conundrum? Gymnastics sabotage??!! That time someone cut the power at Brazilian Nationals Struggling Towards the Rio Olympics Era (2012-2015) Things were looking rough heading into the Rio quad No World or Olympic all-around finalists in 2012, 2013, 2014 Brazil did not automatically qualify a team to the Rio Olympics The emergence of Rebeca Andrade, Flavia Saraiva, and Lorrane Oliveira and how their success reshaped the program The Rio Olympic Games (2016) What were the expectations for this team heading into a home Olympic Games? Could Brazil have medalled as a team here? What were the standout performances? Event finals? The Perseverance Era (2017-2020) Rebeca Andrade has not one, but two more ACL tears (2017, 2019) No World or Olympic medals between Barbosa's 2010 vault and Andrade's 2021 Tokyo performance The Age of Brazil (2021-present) Rebeca Andrade's amazing comeback performance at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, taking all-around silver and vault gold 2021 Kitakyushu Worlds: Rebeca's strategy to protect her body and play the long game Andrade wins her first World vault title 2022 Liverpool Worlds: Andrade takes home vault gold, floor bronze, and a fourth-place team placement 2023 Antwerp Worlds: The Brazilian team takes home SIX medals Team silver, Andrade all-around silver, vault gold, beam bronze, floor silver and bronze The Paris Olympic Games Brazil's historic team final performance, Andrade's floor gold, all-around silver, and vault silver What Are the Next Steps for Brazil? Building depth Remember the cautionary tales of the Romanian and Australian programs: don't be too reliant upon veterans to come and save the day; you need to invest in the next generation! Should Brazil's 2025 Pan American Championships performance worry us? Do we think there will be a "Rebeca Andrade effect" in Brazil and inspire more young kids to try gymnastics? GM Alexandr Fier is a 5 time champion of Brazil and 9 time chess Olympian. He also recently qualified for the FIDE World Cup for the 8th time by finishing tied for first at the American Continental tournament. But aside from all of his impressive accomplishments, what interests me most about GM Fier is how frequently he competes. Last year alone, he played nearly 200 classical games,, and he has now travelled to over 50 countries. In our conversation we discussed: How he maintains his energy and positive outlook through a busy tournament calendar Why he thinks playing quickly gives him a competitive advantage. (Hence the nickname “No Fear”) How he reacted to getting some harsh feedback from legendary trainer IM Mark Dvoretsky at age 18. We also talked about GM Fier's recent qualification for the 2025 FIDE World Cup, his plans for the rest of 2025, and of course, chess books. It was a pleasure to chat with one of Brazil's top players, and I look forward to following his nonstop tournament adventures in the years to come. Thanks to our sponsor, Chessable.com! On 11 September 1951, the 9.55am train from Prague to Aš, in Communist Czechoslovakia was hijacked and driven to freedom in West Germany. One hundred and eleven people were on board and 34 of them never returned, starting new lives on the other side of the Iron Curtain. The remaining 77 returned to Czechoslovakia to face state security, the Státní bezpečnost, and many were jailed.Rachel Naylor uses an archive interview with Karel Ruml, one of the hijackers, who went on to move to the United States.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: A steam train in Czechoslovakia in 1960. When we talk about building a more productive and competitive manufacturing industry, talk of AI, automation, and other new tech usually crops up. But let's not forget the basics – the way we power, staff, and build sustainable practices. That stuff's also important. We're in an era of transformation right now, but it's definitely not the first time the US has gone through this. In fact, we get a little history lesson in this episode from Ted Fertik, VP of Manufacturing & Industrial Policy at BlueGreen Alliance. With a PhD in Economic History, we hear how today's manufacturing challenges mirror our history and what we can learn from it.As we look to the future, Ted talks about today's greater demands on the electrical grid but also why a low carbon economy and electrification are the future. Ted gives us a breakdown on the work that BlueGreen Alliance is doing to make manufacturing more sustainable and attractive to fresh talent and investors. In this episode, find out:Ted shares his background as a PhD grad in Economic History with a focus on industrySome stories from industrial history that inspired Ted to build a career, including the history of Brazil and the UK's industriesHow industrial strategy has been successfully rolled out in other countries in the pastWhat the BlueGreen Alliance does to help build a low carbon economy and a stronger industryWhy focusing on investment into transformation benefits everyone, not just the economyThe connection between sustainability and productivity and why they benefit each other and workersWhy manufacturing is such a critical part of a healthy modern economy, especially in the USWhat a low carbon future could look like and why we can't overlook the effect on the demand for electricityHow manufacturing and industry can attract talent and the role of trade unionsHow to attract investment to a capital-intensive industry and the role of the public sector in making it economically viableWhy we need to make sure that the benefits of careers and investment in manufacturing are widely felt across the populationEnjoying the show? Please leave us a review here. Even one sentence helps. It's feedback from Manufacturing All-Stars like you that keeps us going!Tweetable Quotes:"We need the benefits of the manufacturing economy to be really widely felt. And we need them to be real.”“There's a powerful link between making things with less carbon and the prospect of huge gains in productivity and in material wellbeing for people.”“As we're thinking about building out manufacturing, an affordable, stable, and reliable clean grid is an essential ingredient to a thriving, future-facing manufacturing sector in the US.” Links & mentions:BlueGreen Alliance, an organization that shapes US industrial policy with a focus on good-paying union jobs and environmental progress St. Arnold's Mussel Bar, serving an extensive variety of mussels, Belgian beers, waffles, and more in a ground-level, brick-lined space near Dupond Circle in Washington, DC Make sure to visit http://manufacturinghappyhour.com for detailed show notes and a full list of resources mentioned in this episode. In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. China has never condemned the invasion, and its government and media have carefully avoided using term “Ukraine War,” opting instead to refer to the war as the “Ukraine crisis,” the “Russia-Ukraine conflict,” or the “special military operation,” a term that echoes Moscow's language. Beijing's approach to the Ukraine War has included support for Russia, a commitment China's own principles, including respecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a professed desire for peace. This episode's discussion will focus on China's evolving posture toward the war and China's relationship with Ukraine. Joining the podcast this episode is Dr. Vita Golod, who is a Junior Research Fellow at the A. Yu Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies, National Academy Sciences of Ukraine, and a Visiting Adjunct Instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also the co-founder of the Ukrainian Platform for Contemporary China and a board member of the Ukrainian Association of Sinologists. The Amazon rainforest is known as the “lungs of planet Earth,” but what happens when deforestation in Brazil continues? One journalist tried to alert the world to this coming crisis. Dom Phillips was writing the book “How to Save The Amazon” when he was murdered. His colleagues refused to let Phillips' work die—and they completed his book.
“Wait… his real name is Loony Toon?”In this episode, Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray dive headfirst into a whirlwind of bizarre headlines, starting with a manhunt in Oregon for a suspect whose actual legal name is—yes—Looney John Franklin Toon. The crew can barely keep it together as they riff on the absurdity of a real-life “Looney Toon” firing shots and quoting Yosemite Sam during a police chase. Skin's deadpan delivery of “Did they ask him what's up, doc?” sends the studio into a spiral of laughter. But the chaos doesn't stop there. The team then unpacks a terrifying hot air balloon accident in Brazil, blending genuine concern with their signature comedic timing. Ben's fear of “dangling in the sky surrounded by fire” leads to a surprisingly deep (and funny) reflection on irrational fears. And just when you think it can't get weirder, they break down a viral video of a man jumping two stories at the Galleria Mall—landing on an ice rink and breaking both legs while casually checking his phone. This episode is a masterclass in blending absurd news with razor-sharp wit. Whether you're here for the laughs, the camaraderie, or the sheer unpredictability of what comes next, this one's a must-listen.

1. Lack of sleep You could feel exhausted all the time simply because you lack sleep. Alcohol, overtraining, and eating too late can interfere with sleep. Chocolate consumption can increase theobromine, similar to caffeine, which can interfere with sleep if consumed too late. Try taking magnesium one hour before bed to help you relax. Vitamin B1 is also vital for quality sleep. Did you know that going outside in the morning to watch the sunrise can improve your sleep? Try it!2. Cellular hypothyroidismThyroid hormones go into every cell in your body, controlling metabolism and energy levels. If your thyroid is not working properly, you will likely experience fatigue. Increase selenium to improve thyroid function. Brazil nuts, sardines, shellfish, and grass-fed liver are excellent sources of selenium.3. StressA severe stress, such as the loss of a loved one, can cause your immune system to shut down because of the cortisol spike. This allows latent viruses like the Epstein-Barr virus to come out of remission and cause chronic fatigue syndrome. High doses of vitamin D can help.Try making your own L. reuteri yogurt, one of the best remedies for high cortisol. Increasing magnesium and sodium and taking long walks in the woods can also reduce cortisol levels. 4. Histamine overload An enzyme in your body naturally breaks down histamine. Alcohol, medications, and gut damage can inhibit this enzyme's function, increasing histamine levels. Avoid aged cheeses, vinegar, canned fish, and fermented vegetables if you suspect a histamine sensitivity. 5. Blood sugarConsuming high amounts of carbohydrates or sugar during the day often leads to blood sugar fluctuations at night. Frequent night waking decreases energy during the day. Carb consumption depletes vitamin B1, which can cause restless legs syndrome, waking you up.6. Sleep disturbances Sleep apnea and being too hot or too cold can interfere with your sleep. Frequent urination caused by too much snacking or too many carbs can also be the culprit. 7. Protein intake If you're not consuming enough high-quality protein, it could be the reason you're feeling exhausted all the time. Try adding more protein to each meal for a significant improvement in energy. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting. In 1949, the Gratitude Train arrived in the United States, made up of 49 wagons filled with thousands of gifts from France. The convoy was a thank-you to American families who'd sent food and supplies across the Atlantic, via a ‘friendship train' in the aftermath of World War Two.It was the idea of a French railworker called Andre Picard. In the same spirit as the friendship train, he asked families across France to make donations. The response was 52,000 gifts that filled 49 rail wagons or ‘boxcars', one for each US state, and to be distributed to American families. Some donations were valuable; a carriage used by King Louis XV. Others were handmade; a knitted scarf or a child's painting.June Cutchins tells Jane Wilkinson about the treasure her family received from the Florida boxcar.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive.
