Our semi-annual 20% off Sale is active now!For the entire month of July, use code hawthorn at checkoutto take 20% off all our online courses!Sussing out herb-drug interactions is complicated! In this episode we take the example of Celexa + skullcap, and demonstrate the process of investigation we'd use to sort out whether a proposed risk is real.We start with the Botanical Safety Handbook, because it has certain features which make it significantly better than other manuals or databases. These include the varied relevant experience and skills of the editorial team, its clarity about real vs theorized reactions, and other critical data points which are directly relevant to the herbalist's practice.Checking one resource isn't sufficient, though. We also need to consider the fact that ‘absence of evidence is not evidence of absence', and remember that constitutional variations can significantly change the efficacy of a given herb for a particular person. Information outside of scientific studies – such as the popularity of an herb or the prevalence of a drug, as well as traditional practices with plants – can help us to orient ourselves more precisely. For further education about herb-drug interactions:Herb-Drug Interactions & Herb Safety – our complete course on this subject teaches you all the ins & outs of identifying potential interactions, avoiding them, and conducting reality checks on information you encounter about these risks. The Botanical Safety Handbook – our #1 resource for this information.HHP 101: How Herbs Are Different From Drugs – a key episode of our podcast, these concepts are helpful when learning how HDI may occur.Everything's on sale in July! All our offerings are self-paced online video courses. To Benefit from a Functional Mushroom, You Need to Know What You're Getting. Not all fungal products are equal. Functional "mushroom" products generally contain EITHER the mushroom (fruiting body) OR the mycelium (vegetative body). Notice the quotations around the word "mushroom."Even though mushrooms and mycelium are two very distinct and different parts of these fungal organisms, some supplement purveyors label their products as containing mushrooms when in fact, they contain only grain, and the mycelium that grows on it. Both the scientific research and respected practitioners in the field confirm that the functional value is higher when using the mushroom, rather than the mycelium. Especially if it's a mycelium fermented grain product, which ends up being mostly grain.Guest: Chief Medical Herbalist Lee Carroll from the Real Mushrooms Science & Medical Team. Episode 172 - It's Not HRT or Herbal – It's What Works for YouIn today's episode, I'm doing something a little different. I've pulled together five short clips from past episodes of The Menopause and Cancer Podcast — covering everything from HRT after breast cancer, to herbal treatments, sleep support, and even intimacy after cancer. Why? Because this week, my book Navigating Menopause After Cancer is officially at the printers — and I still can't quite believe it! I wanted to share a little preview of what's inside. These clips reflect the heart of the book: a holistic menopause after cancer toolkit with real expert advice, real options, and the belief that no one approach is better than another. It's about finding what's safe, what's effective, and what works for you.I always go to the right expert for the right topic — because that's how we build truly trustworthy knowledge. I wouldn't ask a cancer exercise specialist to talk about herbs, and I wouldn't ask a herbalist about surgical recovery. Each voice in today's mash-up speaks from the experience in their field. These are just a few of the amazing contributors to the podcast — and I'm proud to say that over 20 brilliant doctors and specialists contributed to the actual book.Below, I have linked all the full YouTube videos from the short clips. Just click on the words: Exercise, Herbal Medicine, Sleep, HRT after breast cancer, IntimacyAnd finally, you can buy a copy of Navigating Menopause After Cancer super soon - keep your eyes peeled!Episode Highlights:00:00 Intro05:53 "Exercise Boosts Sleep, Reduces Depression"07:54 Herbal Medicine Insights for Cancer Survivors10:55 Phytoestrogens: Potential Cancer Benefits13:49 "Zoe's Sleep Improvement Tips"18:37 Navigating HRT Conversations After Cancer22:55 Shared Decision-Making in HRT27:21 Challenging Emotional Complexity Perceptions Connect with us:For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancerJoin our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub

Bandaids are undeniably handy, and there are plenty of situations where they do the job that needs doing. But there are also lots of times when a wound is too big, too irregular, or too sensitive for a bandaid to be the best choice. That's where bespoke bandaging comes into play! You can learn bandaging basics really quickly – yes, even through podcast audio – and that's what today's episode is all about.Bandages are extremely versatile and customizable – even without getting a dozen different types of gauze and pads. Truly, a box of 2″ and 4″ roller gauze, plus some gauze pads and micropore tape, is plenty for most situations you'll run into. For the purposes of practice, they're all you need to get started. When you're practicing your bandaging technique, your big goal is to make the bandages neat, secure, and yet still allowing for a normal range of motion. The best way to get good at this is to practice. The best way to practice is to get some friends together for a “mummy party”, where everyone gets bandaged by everyone else! We're highlighting first aid herbalism on the podcast all month. You can use the discount code FIRSTAID during checkout for $25 off of our Herbal First Aid course for the month of June (2025)!Our Herbal First Aid course has plenty of video showing you bandaging techniques, tips, and tricks! When putting together a bug-out bag in case of emergencies, don't forget your herbs! Just like a first aid kit, a go bag is best when you construct it according to your specific needs, and the needs of people you'll be with. This isn't a “one size fits all” situation! The same goes for circumstances when you need to shelter in place. A ‘stay-in stash' is just a go-bag without the go. It's an orderly, intentional accumulation of all the things you'll need if the power goes out for a week, or you can't leave your home for an extended period of time.Herbs, food, and ‘everything else' all need to go in there – and don't forget water! In this episode we discuss what to include, what to avoid, and ways to keep your stock rotating and fresh for a moment of need.Mentioned in this episode:HHP 233: Emergency Readiness Needs A Meal PlanFEMA AppWe're highlighting first aid herbalism on the podcast all month. Have you ever found yourself wondering about the incredible healing capabilities that exist within the natural world of plants? Like many people today, we often automatically reach for conventional over-the-counter medicines without pausing to consider the powerful natural alternatives. This week, I'm talking with trained herbalist Tasha Rose to explore the fascinating and time-honored tradition of plant medicine and herbal remedies. We take a deep dive into the remarkable ways herbs can provide support for both your immune and nervous systems, and discuss natural alternatives to common medications that you might find in your medicine cabinet. We'll explore how different forms of stress, from mild daily stress to chronic ongoing stress and short-term extreme stress, can be addressed using nourishing herbs, adaptogens, and nervines. In this episode, we take a high-level look at what happens when you combine two of the most contrasting—and complementary—herbs in North American herbalism: Cayenne (Capsicum annuum) and Lobelia (Lobelia inflata). One stimulates, one relaxes—and together they create a powerful synergy that supports circulation, respiration, and neuromuscular function. You'll also hear insights on how their energetic and constitutional profiles apply to vāta patterns in Ayurveda and Mercury archetypes in astrology.
In this episode, we dive into one of the most powerful herb pairs in North American herbalism—Cayenne (Capsicum annuum) and Lobelia (Lobelia inflata). These two plants represent the archetypal stimulant and relaxant, and when used together, they reveal deep patterns in how herbal energetics function. You'll also discover how this triad—stimulant, relaxant, and tonic—connects to core principles found in Ayurveda, alchemy, and astrology. In this segment, you'll learn: Why Cayenne and Lobelia are a dynamic herbal duo How traditional herbalists define stimulants and relaxants (beyond caffeine and chamomile!) The significance of the stimulant-relaxant-tonic triad in herbal energetics The cross-cultural connections to Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and astrology How combining oppositional energetics can create synergy in herbal formulas Tune into the full episode to learn more: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0D57qDsVCLfCfpIZtshgEb?si=6a3639d913d44847 ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ Shop our herbal products: https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. If you're curious to explore natural approaches to support menopause health symptoms today's episode is for you. Our guest, Melinda McDougall, is a registered Medical Herbalist specialising in women's health and menopause. She combines the latest scientific research into botanical medicines with the traditional knowledge women have used for centuries to manage their health.Melinda shares a treasure trove of herbal information about how to improve sleep and brain function, reduce stress, and help your body to feel better, as well as how herbal medicine supported her own healing process with erratic and incredibly heavy cycles in the years running up to menopause. One of my favourite parts was when Melinda described how our brains get totally re-shaped and remolded during menopause, as we wake up from the fog of estrogen people-pleasing hormone, drop into a different way of seeing the world, and become less inclined to put everyone else first. We explore:A powerful ayurvedic herb that helps your body adapt to stress and is very supportive for insomnia and sleep disturbances, as well as herbal medicine for night sweats and hot flushes. A variety of useful herbs for mental focus and brain function, if you're experiencing brain fog, or feel like your brain isn't working like it used to, as well as herbs to support you through the intense rage that we can experience during menopause,How to use herbal medicine as a viable alternative to HRT or as a way to support your body alongside HRT, like adaptogenic herbs, and herbs that support gut and liver health and can help to reduce side effects like headaches, weight gain and breakthrough bleeding. ---Order our menopause book - Wise Power: Discover the Liberating Power of Menopause to Awaken Authority, Purpose and Belonging here: https://www.wisepowerbook.com---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Myriah Hinchey, a functional medicine practitioner specializing in chronic illness and immune dysfunction, to explore the complex world of autoimmunity through the lens of Lyme disease and stealth pathogens. We dive into how these microbes evade the immune system, disrupt the body's internal balance, and target areas of weakness — from old injuries to inflamed tissues. Dr. Hinchey explains how this leads to persistent inflammation, neurological symptoms, and gut dysfunction, often without obvious signs of infection. You'll learn why a root-cause approach to chronic infections must go beyond antimicrobials — incorporating immune support, detoxification, terrain rebuilding, and the smart use of herbal medicine. If you've struggled with unexplained symptoms, autoimmunity, or suspect hidden infections might be at play, this conversation will help you understand the deeper mechanisms — and what true healing actually takes. Key Takeaways: The central focus in treating Lyme disease should be on restoring immune balance and competency rather than solely targeting pathogens with antibiotics. Lyme disease can lead to significant systemic disruptions, manifesting in symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and even neuropsychiatric disorders. A therapeutic lifestyle approach, including dietary changes, detoxification, and stress management, is essential for effective management of chronic vector-borne diseases. Herbal medicine, especially herbs like Cryptolepis, Chinese Skullcap, and Japanese Knotweed, play a vital role in managing inflammation and immune dysregulation. More About Dr. Myriah Hinchey, ND: Dr. Myriah Hinchey, a Naturopathic physician and Fellow of the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (MAPS), is a recognized expert in the field of Lyme disease and other complex chronic inflammatory conditions, with over 17 years of specialized experience. As a physician and the Medical Director at TAO, an integrative center for healing, she has successfully guided thousands of patients towards recovery from their complex chronic inflammatory conditions. Additionally, she is the founder and owner of LymeCore Botanicals, a herbal medicine company focused on providing effective solutions for healing vector-borne diseases. Dr. Hinchey is dedicated to treating patients of all ages, with a specialty in pediatrics, and is also a sought-after speaker, passionately educating healthcare professionals on the pathophysiology of vector-borne diseases and how to successfully integrate functional, herbal, and lifestyle medicine into their practices. It was such a joy to have my good friend, Thomas Easley, on the show. For some reason, the herb he chose to discuss – blue vervain – surprised me (perhaps because it hit so close to home?), but his insights about it were both thoughtful and expansive. He shared about the type of person who tends to really benefit from vervain, the best time of day to take it, some lesser-known ways of working with it, and so much more!Blue vervain is perhaps best known for its gift of helping wind you down, and so it's often included in blends for relaxation and sleep. In this episode, Thomas shared his version of a sleep tincture blend featuring blue vervain, which he calls GTFTS (I'll let you guess what that acronym stands for!). Click here for your beautifully-illustrated recipe card for GTFTS.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► Specific indications for blue vervain - and whether you're the type of person who could benefit from keeping a bottle of it on your desk (and actually taking it!)► Why it's important to experience an herb (in multiple ways and during different circumstances) to determine whether it's the right herb for you► Three little-known uses for blue vervain► and so many other insights about this lovely relaxing herb….For those of you who don't know him, Thomas Easley is a registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild, a clinical herbalist, and the founder of the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine. With a passion for herbal medicine ignited in 1996, Thomas has dedicated his life to helping others through unique approaches that integrate traditional western herbalism, clinical nutrition, and modern medical sciences. Thomas is co-author of The Modern Herbal Dispensatory: A Medicine-Making Guide and Modern Herbal Medicine. He firmly believes in the power of herbal medicine to transform lives and promote vibrant health. His approach emphasizes the importance of food as medicine and incorporates tailored diets, stress reduction techniques, nutrition supplements, and exercise to help clients achieve their health goals. I hope this conversation with Thomas brings you as much insight (and maybe a few laughs) as it brought me. I can't wait to hear what resonates most with you from this conversation—blue vervain might surprise you, too.----Get full show notes and more information at: herbswithrosaleepodcast.comFor more behind-the-scenes of this podcast, follow @rosaleedelaforet on Instagram! The secret to using herbs successfully begins with knowing who YOU are. Have you been studying herbs for a while, but you still feel unsure about how to combine them into an effective formula? Or maybe you're newer to herbalism and ready to dive into the art and science of formulation? Formulation is one of my favorite parts of herbal medicine, so I'm excited to kick off a new series called The Anatomy of a Formula. I love the synergy that emerges when herbs are combined in intelligent, intentional ways—and the specificity you can achieve when formulating for a particular person. It's both powerful and fun. However, for budding herbalists, formulation can initially feel daunting and a little confusing. Without some kind of framework or guidance, many people end up just tossing a bunch of herbs into a bottle and hoping it works. That's not an ideal approach because you're essentially leaving your therapeutics to chance. Instead, approach formulation with strategy, intention, and precision, tailored to the individual you're working with. Here's what we'll cover in this post: • A brief history of formulation in North American herbalism • Formulation challenges and how to fix the problem • The foundations of herbal formulas: pairs and triplets • The anatomy of an effective formula ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ Shop our herbal products: https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. When my daughter sprained her ankle during a softball game, I was grateful to have Comfrey growing in the garden and some Arnica oil stashed in the van. In our fifth installment in this series, we address the facts & fictions about ginkgo, guarana, and maca supplements in commerce! These were #13, 14, and 15 on the top-selling herbs list for 2023 (the most recent data). This series is all about sharing an herbalist's understanding of herbs very popular as commercial supplements and other mass-market products. We want to share perspectives of both traditional and contemporary herbal practice, so people can understand these are “good for” more than just what's on their labels. It's too easy for herbs to be boxed in to smaller and smaller ranges of application when they're commercialized. This is an antidote to that movement! For practicing herbalists & clinicians, it's very important to know well those herbs which are most commonly consumed. Your clients will ask you about them, or be taking them before they even visit you – so you've got to know what they do! You might be able to give advice about a better remedy, or a compensation for some effect of the plant. This can help your clients just as much as a new recommendation, so don't neglect it.If you're new to herbalism, this can also serve as an inoculation against “herban legends” and misinformation – which is rampant on today's internet.13. Spring has officially sprung. The birds are chirping, the plants are waking up, and the earth is on the move again. It's a beautiful time of year—and here in the Pacific Northwest, we welcome the lifting of the cold, the retreat of the rain, and the chance to head back outside to enjoy nature's splendor and get our gardens growing. But spring's return comes at a high cost for many due to seasonal allergies. If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from seasonal allergies, stepping outside can bring so much discomfort and suffering that it hardly seems worth it. You might choose to stay inside, avoiding the warm, sunny days simply because your allergies make being outside unbearable. In this episode, we're diving into the dynamics of seasonal allergies. There's a lot to cover, so this will be a two-part series. You may just be looking for remedies—and we'll get there—but first, we need some context. Understanding the "why" behind seasonal allergies provides a broader perspective on what's happening and how to identify the root cause. In Part One, we'll explore the background and context of seasonal allergies, including: The contributing factors behind allergies and intolerance An esoteric perspective to complement physiological understanding The difference between allergies and intolerances What immunological load is—and how to remain asymptomatic With this foundation in place, Part Two will cover the therapeutic strategy and approach. I've been wanting to have 7Song on the podcast for a really long time now, so it was exciting to finally get to sit and chat with him. 7Song is well known for his work in first aid and disaster relief, and our conversation touched on many different aspects of this work. People often want to help when there's been a natural disaster like a hurricane, wildfire, or flooding, and 7Song shared some of his best tips on how herbalists can help, along with some of his favorite herbs to have on hand for first aid situations. One specific health situation 7Song discussed was smoke inhalation due to wildfires – sadly, something that has become all too common these days. He gave his number one tip for what to do if you're exposed to wildfire smoke (hint: it has nothing to do with herbs!) and shared his guide on Smoke Inhalation and Herbal Medicine with us. You can download your copy of this fantastic handout here: https://bit.ly/4m3DqoeBy the end of this episode, you'll know:► How 7Song got involved with herbal first aid and disaster relief► The five most common health issues 7Song deals with when giving first aid at large gatherings► What herbalists can do to help with disaster relief – and more importantly, what NOT to do!► How herbs can help your body recover from smoke inhalation► and so much more…For those of you who don't know him, 7Song has long been entranced by the non-human natural world, especially herpetology and botany. He also wants to be helpful in the human community, and herbal medicine feels like a good marriage of these two interests. He is the director and main teacher of the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine, which he started in 1992. He is the Director of Holistic Medicine and a practicing clinic herbalist at the Ithaca Free Clinic, an integrated free clinic that includes both conventional and less-conventional modalities.
