Amelia spent eight years as a media communications director before a layoff sent her straight into panic-applying for whatever came up. Natalie knew networking was her next move and then sat frozen for two months because it felt transactional. Laura had the numbers: referrals converted to interviews at eight times the rate of cold applications, and one of those referrals is now her boss. The split between a job search that lands a job and one that lands a career you love isn't luck, connections, or the resume, but the mindset behind it. What You'll Learn: The one mindset mistake that sets everything else in motion and why most job seekers are making it before they ever hit send on their first application What avoidance motivation is, why a layoff triggers it automatically, and how it causes smart people to land in a worse version of the same situation with a different company name Why two months of networking paralysis is more common than anyone admits and how one reframe completely changes the results you get from the people you already know Why referrals convert to interviews at more than eight times the rate of cold applications and what that means for where you should be spending your job search energy The difference between a search that lands you a job and a search that lands you a career you actually love and why the tactics are completely different Our book, Happen To Your Career: An Unconventional Approach To Career Change and Meaningful Work, is now available on audiobook! You've blocked out the afternoon. And somehow the garage gets cleaned instead. That may be executive dysfunction, a disruption in your brain's ability to plan, organize, and follow through. In a job search, it looks like collecting postings you never apply to, over-preparing, or spending months getting ready to start. This week, ICF-certified career coach Ben Tobin joins Mac with three ways forward. Lower the stakes: make your first goal to bomb an interview, not land one. Sit with the discomfort: that pit-of-your-stomach dread runs its course if you let yourself feel it. And build structure: schedule time, name your very first step, and write a fresh to-do list each day. As Ben says, the meta work is work — give it a place on your calendar.About Our Guest:Ben Tobin is an ICF-certified career coach who works with tech professionals and adults with ADHD. DIYing your UX job search feels productive right up until you realize you've been doing it for six months, twelve months, or longer with nothing to show for it. If you've been telling yourself you're one tip away from finally landing interviews, this episode is worth sitting with. The core question Sarah asks is simple and a little uncomfortable: if you gave yourself three more months on your ux job search, your portfolio, or your resume, what would actually be different? Because more time doesn't automatically mean better results. More applications don't automatically mean more interviews. If you can't answer what you'd change, you're just planning to spend more hours doing the same thing that hasn't worked yet.Sarah backs this up with research from her own program, Career Strategy Lab. After analyzing over 1,700 responses from people who didn't join, the two most common reasons were not feeling ready, or wanting to keep trying the DIY approach first. But when she surveyed people after they did join, a pattern showed up just as clearly: regret over not joining sooner, and months lost to portfolios or ux job searches that stayed stuck. The episode also gets specific about the one thing Sarah says is genuinely hard to DIY, which isn't your resume or your portfolio. It's relationships and proximity to people who are actually hiring. She shares two real examples, Marcus and Heather, both laid off, both stuck after months of solo applying, and both hired only after they stopped going it alone.Topics Discussed✅ Why simply giving your job search "three more months" rarely changes your outcome unless your strategy actually changes✅ The specific question to ask yourself before committing to another few months of DIYing your portfolio or resume✅ What over 1,700 survey responses revealed about why job seekers hesitate to get outside help, and what those same people said after they finally did✅ The popular portfolio myth about needing three to five projects before you can apply, and why it can quietly cost you months✅ How one person got hired with only one project in her portfolio, and was found on LinkedIn without even applying✅ Why relationships and proximity to people hiring are the hardest thing to build alone, no matter how much networking you do on LinkedIn✅ How a referral from someone he knew got Marcus hired as a user researcher after six months of rejections and ghosting✅ How one person's post about her manager hiring a contractor turned into a job for someone else, which then led to five more people getting hired at that same company✅ Why being part of a smaller, closer network can make you more visible than posting into the endless scroll of LinkedInLinks & Resources

A major multi-unit franchisee, Hamra Enterprises, found itself locked in a high-stakes standoff with Indeed over systemic backend glitches that disrupted major brand campaigns and nearly triggered a massive spending boycott. Beyond the corporate drama, the boys lock in their predictions for a massive international soccer finale and share a wild, graphic true-crime story from overseas that you truly have to hear to believe. Plus, the HR tech landscape is shifting fast with a wave of new product drops and strategic alliances. The crew breaks down the massive legal and compliance risks hidden inside the latest Recruitics and Maki People integration, dissects the market strategy behind the newest Appcast launch, and debates whether a three-way partnership between HireEZ, Next, and Talroo is a brilliant counter-strategy to industry giants or just a culturally messy survival play. But if you're trying to make an intentional career transition into meaningful, well-paid work, that number is only half the story. Here's what the data doesn't tell you, and what actually determines how long your career change will take. What You'll Learn: The critical difference between a conventional job search and an intentional career transition — and why confusing the two is what keeps most people stuck The two variables that determine your career change timeline more than anything else: clarity and validation How Linnea used an Ideal Career Profile to land a role four levels above where she started — without applying to hundreds of postings How Kara went from a 13-year federal career with a 5-month runway to a Chief of Staff role she loves — in exactly 5 months What the first four months of an intentional career transition actually look like, month by month, before you ever send a single application   Our book, Happen To Your Career: An Unconventional Approach To Career Change and Meaningful Work, is now available on audiobook! Love Your Career Podcast? Let us know! Most people don't expect a career crisis. Redundancy, restructuring, a change in leadership or the sudden realisation that your contribution is being overlooked can happen with very little warning. And when it does, important career decisions often need to be made at the worst possible time.In episode 283 of Your Career Podcast, I explain why proactive career planning matters and how giving regular attention to your career can help you avoid making rushed decisions under pressure.I share a personal story from my years in Singapore, when I arrived at the airport with my two-year-old daughter and discovered that my Australian passport had expired. What followed was a stressful race against time and a difficult arrival in Australia using my British passport without the correct visa.It was a powerful lesson in what happens when something important, but not urgent, is left unattended for too long. The Urgent Important MatrixI introduce the Urgent Important Matrix, a practical framework made famous by Stephen Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and associated with former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The matrix helps you separate tasks into four areas:urgent and importantimportant but not urgenturgent but not importantneither urgent nor importantCareer planning usually sits in the important but not urgent category. That is precisely why it is so easy to postpone.Your career does not send you a reminder when your industry is changing, your role is becoming vulnerable or your professional network is growing cold. By the time career planning feels urgent, you may already be facing redundancy, burnout or an unexpected career transition. What proactive career planning includesI discuss the career work that is best completed before you urgently need it:understanding and articulating your professional valuegaining clarity about the direction you want your career to takekeeping your resume, LinkedIn profile and other career assets currentmaintaining relationships and nurturing your professional networkreflecting on your achievements, skills and changing prioritiespreparing for career change before circumstances force the decisionProfessionals who manage redundancy or career change well are not necessarily luckier than everyone else. Often, they have already invested time in understanding who they are, what they offer and what they want next. This preparation gives them greater confidence, perspective and choice.A restructure may still be unsettling, but it is less likely to feel like a personal verdict when you already understand the value you bring.Take control before your career becomes urgentYou do not need to wait for a crisis to pay attention to your career.By setting aside time for the important but non-urgent work now, you can make better decisions later, strengthen your professional confidence and respond more effectively when change arrives. What have you done to proactively manage your career before redundancy looms?- - - - - - - -Welcome to Your Career Podcast with Jane Jackson where I help mid career professionals overcome self doubt and gain career clarity and the confidence to create the life and career they desire. Book a Zoom chat with me at janejacksoncoach.com - I'd love to meet you and discover what's happening in your career! Creative careers are rarely linear. Years of experimentation often precede breakthrough moments. Working behind the scenes develops skills that make future entrepreneurial success possible. The best creators don't simply chase trends—they uncover universal human curiosity. Career storytelling works because people are endlessly fascinated by how other people make a living. Viral content isn't luck. It often comes from testing hypotheses repeatedly until something resonates. Authenticity beats perfection when building an audience. Every job has an interesting story if someone is willing to tell it. Send Jay comments via textThe Invisible Graduate: Navigating the Automated Black Hole of the Modern Job Market.Watching your adult child return home with a great degree, a high GPA, and a stack of completed internships—only to face months of total silence from employers—is one of the most unexpected stressors of the empty nest season. The immediate, well-meaning instinct for most parents is to tell them to "just apply more" or "start networking." Career strategist and founder of Grads Hired, Debra Shaw, joins Jay Ramsden to expose why these generic numbers games backfire completely, driving motivated young adults straight into deep job-search burnout and leaving them stuck in their childhood bedrooms. In this clear, practical conversation, Debra breaks down how the hiring landscape has fundamentally changed from the days of physical resumes and local drop-offs. Today, easy-apply portals function as automated black holes controlled by applicant tracking systems that look for specific metric-driven accomplishments rather than basic job duties. Debra shares tactical counter-strategies to make grads humanly visible again, including how to leverage low-hanging alumni networks on LinkedIn without the "ick," how to comment surgically on a hiring manager's projects, and why targeting small businesses often prevents the massive corporate layoff cycle. Learn how to pivot your own relationship from an exhausted, nagging enforcer into a supportive advisor, why first jobs require baseline momentum over a perfect "passion," and how to help your adult child confidently walk through the professional doors you open for them.Strategic Highlights:The "Apply More" Illusion: Why spamming automated application buttons destroys a graduate's confidence and creates artificial barriers.Resumes That Show Proof: How rewriting restaurant or entry-level experience to feature distinct metrics changes the ROI on an application tracking scan. The Intergenerational Communication Gap: Navigating Gen Z's soft-skill deficits, from professional email architecture to reading workplace social cues. The 12-to-18-Month Rule: Why modern career paths reward fast tracking and early momentum over legacy long-term corporate loyalty.

A growing number of job seekers now begin by using tools like ChatGPT, asking questions in plain language about roles, salaries, and what it's actually like to work for a company. It is a very different starting point from typing a job title into a search box and scrolling through pages of aggregator links. At a time when employers are drowning in low-intent applications, something interesting is happening at the other end. Candidates who find roles through AI search arrive with real context about the company, the role, and why it fits their life. So how can employers make the most of this new world of job search? My guest this week is Ben Russell, Co-founder at SonicJobs. In our conversation, Ben explains how AI-driven job search is developing, what it means for candidate intent, and why he thinks this moment could rebuild trust between employers and job seekers. In the interview, we discuss: The role LLMs are now playing in the job search. Changes in job seeker behaviour Lessons from the rise of Google Building apps in ChatGPT Implicit and explicit discovery The implications of conversational search Delivering well-informed, high-intent applicants How employers can own their own brand What does the future of the job search look like? Some CMO opportunities look promising right up until you stop asking, "Can I land this?" and start asking, "Can I actually win at this company?"  In a market that is warmer than it was a year ago but still unforgiving, Hugh Marshall of Heidrick & Struggles argues that CMOs need to approach the search with two-way diligence. The offer matters, but so does knowing whether the company, CEO, board, investors, and growth expectations are aligned enough to support real success.  With that recruiter 's-eye view, Hugh joins Drew to get inside today's CMO search, from PE-backed pressure and growth-stage churn to comp conversations, equity tradeoffs, and the big career bets hiding inside the fine print. Call it a reality check for CMOs who want the next role to be the right one.  What You'll Learn:  How to spot risky CMO roles before you're in too deep  Why two-way diligence is now non-negotiable  How AI fluency is reshaping CMO candidacy  What makes candidates stand out in the interview process  Know what you're walking into before you say yes. Tune in for Hugh's candid take on today's CMO market, the hidden dynamics behind the offer, and the signs of a truly winnable role.  For full show notes and transcripts, visit https://renegademarketing.com/podcasts/ To learn more about CMO Huddles, visit https://cmohuddles.com/

If your job search isn't working and you're sending more applications hoping something sticks, you're not alone. Mass applying is the most common job search mistake, and the mindset shift and targeted strategy that fix it took Stephanie Drumright from silence to two offers in 8 days. Stephanie had sent 145 applications in 6 months. Five got her into interviews. None turned into an offer. She had a visa clock ticking, and her instinct was to apply to more jobs, broader roles, anything that might stick. So she changed her approach completely. She narrowed her criteria to Head of Operations or similar roles, companies under 250 people, a hybrid setup, and a specific values fit. Instead of applying like someone trying to earn her way in, she searched like someone with standards. 8 days later, she had 2 offers. This episode unpacks the job search psychology behind why mass applying fails, the cognitive load that drains your interview performance, and how the shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset turns a targeted job search into real interviews and offers. What you'll learn: Why sending more applications when you're scared often makes your job search harder, not easier The cognitive load cost that's draining your interview performance behind the scenes How to shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset in your job search Stephanie's exact criteria framework that took her from 145 applications to 2 offers in 8 days The identity shift from applicant trying to earn a yes to candidate with standards   Our book, Happen To Your Career: An Unconventional Approach To Career Change and Meaningful Work, is now available on audiobook! Re-entering the UX job market after years away is harder than most people expect, especially when you're doing it alone. After 12 years at Constant Contact, growing from associate interaction designer to principal UX designer, Emmanuel relocated, took a deliberate career break, and then tried to re-enter a job market that had completely changed. He spent three months rebuilding his portfolio alone, then another three months applying and hearing almost nothing. His LinkedIn hadn't been updated since 2017. He burned out.In this episode, Emmanuel shares what finally got him unstuck; why working on his resume, portfolio, and LinkedIn in parallel changed his messaging faster than tackling them one at a time; how early feedback from coaches and a community shortened iteration cycles he'd been stuck in for months; and what shifted when he started applying only to roles that actually fit. He's actively interviewing now, and the inbound LinkedIn requests have started coming in too.Topics Discussed:✅ What re-entering the UX job market after a long tenure at one company feels like and how to close the gap✅ Why working on your resume, portfolio, and LinkedIn in parallel sharpens your message faster than doing them one at a time✅ How long iteration cycles quietly stall your progress and what to do instead✅ Why submitting imperfect work for feedback early is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make✅ What AI tools genuinely help when job searching and where human judgment still matters more✅ The confidence cost of mass applying✅ What changes when you get more selective about the roles you apply to
