Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Teachers in Transition, Vanessa explores how the books we loved when we were young helped shape what we notice, value, question, and carry into adulthood AND how our own stories  can help us write a better resume. From Erma Bombeck and Agatha Christie's Miss Marple to Nancy Drew, The Boxcar Children, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and more, this episode looks at the “childhood bookshelf” as more than nostalgia. Those early stories may have taught us how to solve problems, recognize patterns, seek belonging, survive broken systems, resist being reduced to one role, and remember who we were before burnout took over.Vanessa also talks about reading with children and teens, the difference between censorship and conversation, and why the books young people choose can give us clues about what they are trying to understand. In the Career Transition and Job Search segment, Vanessa moves into resume basics for teachers leaving the classroom. She explains why a modern resume is not your whole life story, why skills should be shown through evidence-rich bullet points instead of a disconnected skills section, and how teachers can begin turning real classroom stories into quantifiable resume accomplishments. You'll also hear about the “Everything Resume” — a master resume template that holds your stories, accomplishments, projects, leadership roles, certifications, data stories, communication wins, and more — so you have raw material ready when it is time to tailor a resume for a specific job posting.Episode highlights:Why childhood books may still hold clues about who we areHow Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z reading experiences shaped different kinds of courageWhy “stories matter” does not mean censorship is the answerHow rereading old favorites can help reconnect us with ourselvesWhy teachers need targeted resumes, not one perfect resume for every jobHow to turn teaching stories into resume bullet pointsWhy quantifiable resume metrics matterWhat an Everything Resume is and why teachers should build oneHow SCOUT helps Vanessa's clients explore career direction and translate teaching experienceMentioned in this episode:Erma Bombeck — Aunt Erma's Cope Book and other humor collections Carolyn Keene — Nancy Drew series Franklin W. Are you getting ghosted in your UX job search despite knowing you're qualified? When you have 5, 10, 15 years of experience and you're applying to 20+ jobs a week without hearing back or you're not making it past the first round, it's natural to start thinking you're the problem. You're not. You're just unpositioned. In this episode, Sarah makes the case that ghosting is usually a positioning problem, rather than a skills issue. Positioning is how you communicate what you do, who you do it for, and why it matters. It's the thread that connects what you've done in the past to what you could do for a team if they hired you. When that thread is missing, recruiters and hiring managers move on because your materials aren't clearly paining the picture for them.Sarah walks through what it actually takes to fix your positioning, starting with the one foundational step most people skip: getting clear on who you are and what makes you different, before touching your resume, portfolio, or LinkedIn.Topics Discussed:✅ Why getting ghosted in your UX job search isn't usually a qualification problem✅ What causes recruiters to move on from your resume✅ What "positioning" means in the context of a UX job search✅ The step most people skip that ties everything together✅ How applying to fewer jobs can get you more interviews✅ Creating a Compass Statement and how it acts as a filter for every career asset you create✅ How niching down your job search to a specific industry or type of company can transform your UX job searchLinks From This Episode:

One of the hardest parts of a senior-level job search is that after enough rejection, confusion starts to set in. You start questioning yourself.   Lowering your target. Wondering if maybe the market is just impossible right now.   Or you keep pushing harder with no real strategy.   But your results (or lack thereof) are data   And your data is telling you exactly where the breakdown is.   If you are tired of guessing…tired of wondering why the role still hasn't happened…   and want to know exactly what needs to change to land your Sr Director, VP, or C-Suite role once and for all.    FREE TRAINING Register for The Catapult Your Career Bootcamp (http://thecatapultbootcamp.com) WORK WITH US Join the Catapult Your Career Program (http://cycprogram.com) GET IN TOUCH Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stellaodogwu/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_intelle/ Email: contact@intelle.us Text: 949-519-4554

For most who experience a layoff, their first instinct is to fix it fast. Polish the resume. Post "open to work" on LinkedIn. Start applying Monday morning. That instinct is the exact move that turns a 3-month job search into a 9-month one, and the reason most laid-off professionals end up taking a pay cut instead of a pay raise. The first 48 hours after a layoff decide the next 9 months of your career. Most laid-off professionals make the same mistakes in those first two days, and those mistakes cost them months and thousands of dollars. A small percentage do the opposite, and they often end up earning more in their next role. In this episode, we unpack the 3 biggest mistakes laid-off professionals make and the 3 actions that actually move you forward. There are a lot of questions that need to be asked when doing this, some of which are simple and extremely specific to who you are as a person, and the rest are a bit more hands on when it comes to site visits. What brand do you want to work on? Do you really only want to work on one brand, or do you prefer an incredible variety of broken stuff rolling (or getting pushed) in the door. Have you looked at the google reviews for the place? What types of tools do they have, and are they proactive about policing and acquiring more when needed? One of the best things that you can do is talk to the technicians at that shop, because more often than not they will tell you the real story that the Service Manager either doesn't want to tell you, or is too oblivious to notice. We also get into some of the more covert methods where you can test out the service advisors!  Bottom line, when the technician shortage is this bad, and likely rot get worse as the old guys begin to retire at an increasingly rapid rate, you get to call the shots! Also Uncle Jimmy tells a service manager to their face, “everyone I have talked to about working here says, ‘DON'T DO IT!'  This Episode of Grease the Wheels is brought to you in partnership with Surfwrench Digital! Most job seekers stay busy tweaking portfolios, scrolling job boards, and hanging out in Slack groups, but at the end of the day, they can't point to anything that moved them closer to getting hired. In this episode of the Career Strategy Podcast, Sarah Doody shares a simple Post-It note hack that transformed how she runs her business, and how you can use the same concept to cut through the noise and focus on what actually matters in your job search.Topics discussed in this episode:✅ The 6-word question a business coach told Sarah to write on a Post-It note✅ Why "being busy" in your job search is not the same as making progress✅ How to identify what your job search actually needs right now✅ Why tweaking your portfolio for the fifth time probably isn't the answer✅ How to create your own Post-It note filter for your UX job search✅ The difference between false productivity and real momentumTimestamps:00:00 The best productivity tool might be a Post-It note00:24 The 6-word question that changed how Sarah runs her business02:24 Why "is this a revenue generating activity" was a game changer04:49 Your job search is like a business05:45 How to write your own Post-It note question06:30 The trap of tweaking your portfolio all Saturday07:06 False sense of productivity and why it's the enemy of getting hired08:45 You don't need more time, you need the right focus09:33 Send Sarah your Post-It note on LinkedIn

On this episode of Find Your Dream Job, she makes the case for slowing down first.Adriane walks through four steps to get clear on what you want before you start applying: look inward, step away from your screen, do a time audit, and have conversations with people in roles that interest you. She also tackles the tension between needing a job now and finding work that feels like a longer-term fit. When you know what you're after, the search gets shorter, the interviews get easier, and the outcome gets better.About Our Guest:Adriane Jones helps organizations build learning and talent development programs that let you grow at every stage of your career.
