On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Trevor Crotts, Founder of Buddy Brands. Trevor is a serial entrepreneur who started out with pet products and is now a major proponent of using 3d models and mixed reality in eCommerce. With limited or no access to brick-and-mortar stores during the pandemic, almost all types of products have now moved online. So now we have more people buying products they’ve never seen in person. This has taken the importance of product images and descriptions to another level. Customers want what they see while ordering. Otherwise you get (lots of) returns and loss of credibility. On the flipside, it is already well established that great product images help with conversion. But if you can provide customers with a 360-degree view of the product, you are really getting a leg up on the competition. You are effectively allowing the customers to touch and turn over the product in their hands - all from the safety of their home. The result? User experience and Conversion rate skyrocket. You are looking at an average jump of 30% in conversion rate! In this episode, Kunle and Trevor talk about using 3d models and mixed reality in eCommerce. You will get to hear about triggering sales with emotions, using 3d models and mixed reality on product pages, and best practices on moving your catalogue to 3d models. This episode is a sneak peek into a technology that is rapidly becoming a norm! ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Will Laurenson, Founder of Customers Who Click - a Customer Value Optimisation consultancy and podcast. Will helps DTC brands optimise customer experience to convert customers that bring higher lifetime value. Paid acquisition is a go-to strategy for most eCom and DTC brands. While this brings in new customers, they don’t always stick around to become repeat customers. When a customer buys purely based on incentives (discounts and rewards), their repeat purchase is also driven by those same incentives. This is not viable for the business. Cracking the code of bagging customers who understand and value your brand is a key determinant of success. Boosting Lifetime Value (LTV) is becoming the top focus of businesses looking to build long term profitability. Today’s guest, Will believes that LTV is one of the three major pillars that drive customer value. In this episode, Kunle and Will talk about building an entire business strategy with the goal of boosting customer value. You will get to hear about conversion rate optimisation, CX goals, retention strategies and the KPIs you should be tracking. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Samir El-Sabini, Co-founder and CEO at Juni - the Digital Bank made for Media Buying. The platform aims to provide eCom businesses access to banking power, and has a waiting list of over 3000 while still being in Beta. When entrepreneurs think about launching a new DTC or eCom business, the focus is usually on the product. While identifying the right product and market can help you drive revenue, other nitty-gritties like compliance and banking can put a dent in your profitability. Most payment gateways have settlement periods ranging from 3-7 days. Delayed access to payouts can create cash flow issues for businesses. While access to credit in the eCommerce industry has certainly improved, choosing the right option for your business is still a very real challenge. This is where Juni is trying to reimagine banking for eCom and Media buying firms. Their services are completely focused on alleviating the pain points in eCommerce banking and credit. In today’s episode, Kunle and Samir talk about the typical financial challenges faced by eCom businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Louis Lavedan, Strategic Partner Manager EMEA at Gorgias - a Paris-based eCommerce customer experience platform. The platform allows you to create a unified stream to offer effective customer service on all platforms. Gorgias is trusted by over 5500 merchants. What do you think of when you hear “Customer Experience”? The common answer would be sending shipping info, handling returns and answering post-purchase questions. If you are of this opinion too, then you’re leaving money on the table! Customer experience (CX) has really come into the spotlight with the explosive growth of eCommerce. For successful brands, CX is a pillar for driving sales and retention. Being wherever the customer is and responding promptly is the difference being gaining, retaining or losing a customer. However, keeping tabs of all communication channels and offering prompt customer service can be daunting. This is where a platform like Gorgias comes in. In today’s episode, Kunle and Louis talk using technology to build a CX that’ll set you apart. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Raúl Galera, Chief Advocate at ReferralCandy - a customer referral platform that gets shoppers to refer their friends and drive word-of-mouth. The company has worked with over 30,000 brands since launching in 2009. In today’s market, a company’s long-term success is closely linked to their cost of acquiring new customers. Cracking the right marketing mix that enables consistent acquisition and retention is what keeps marketers up at night. It's safe to say that every brand wants more word-of-mouth referrals. There are many advantages of word-of-mouth marketing, most of all that it doesn’t cost anything. But building a reputation that drives organic customer acquisition is not just about creating buzz or being seen more. It starts with a solid product and an even better customer experience. But that being said, there are systems you can put in place that make referrals a bit more likely. This is where a platform like ReferralCandy comes in! In today’s episode, Kunle and Raúl talk about all things referral marketing. You will get to hear about what it takes to build a solid base that breeds loyal customers, the right time to activate customers, what incentives to offer and other best practices. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Chris Shipferling, Managing Partner at Global Wired Advisors - an investment bank specialising in buyouts in the DTC segment. Together with his highly experienced team, Chris provides companies with comprehensive financial advice and strategic planning through the sales transaction. Entrepreneurs start businesses for various reasons. For some it will come to represent their life’s work and carry on for decades. For others it is an asset to grow, nurture and ultimately sell for a profit. The latter is definitely the more prevalent scenario, especially in the DTC world. Almost every other day, we read about businesses getting bought and sold for huge sums of money. Buyouts are becoming more common and aided by the stellar growth spurt of eCommerce, money has come flooding into the market. More VCs, PEs and Investment banks are on the lookout for companies ripe for sale. However, with more opportunity comes more noise and different challenges. It is easy for founders to take their eye off the ball, i.e. their business, while seeking out and speaking to investors. In today’s episode, Kunle and Chris talk about the ins and outs of an exit strategy. You will get to hear about how investors screen businesses, what metrics they look at, and how transactions are modelled. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Bob Braham, CEO of Famous - a mobile-first platform that helps build stunning storefronts and landing pages for shopify stores. With Famous, you can build premium pages without code using the super intuitive page builder. Gone are the days when having a great-looking online store was a novelty. ECommerce is now front and centre across all industries. To compete, and indeed survive, in today’s market, you need a store that not only works well but also helps you stand out from your competitors. Not every business has the means to hire developers to build trendsetting landing pages and storefronts. This is the very problem that Famous solves with it’s page builder. You can create custom mobile-first landing pages and product pages in minutes - all without code. Famous completely integrates with your Shopify store. Now even bootstrapped businesses can build premium pages with additional spend (and headache!). This means quicker launches and iterations that will help drive growth. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Stefan Jordev, Director of Marketplace Strategy at Bobsled - a digital marketing agency that has successfully launched 100+ brands on Amazon and managed millions of dollars in monthly sales. The founder of Bobsled was a guest on the show way back in season 2. DTC brands pride themselves on being able to control all aspects of customer experience. Be it UI on their website, packaging or fulfillment and returns. Building a rapport and direct connect with the customer is a key driver. While selling on Amazon and other marketplaces, you lose control of the experience and connect with the customer. This is why many DTC and eCom brands steer clear of marketplaces. But with growing competition and an extremely volatile market, being omnipresent is growing in importance. Being everywhere your customers are is a soon-to-be norm. That being said, DTC brands have a lot of apprehension about how to make the transition to marketplaces and replicate their success on the platform. In today’s episode, Kunle and Stefan examine the case for DTC brands to start selling on Amazon. You get to hear about how to prepare for transition, leverage Amazon’s programs and ads to succeed on the platform. ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Guillaume Cabane, a SaaS Growth Hacker with over 2 decades of online selling expertise. He has been a growth advisor to high Growth SaaS Startups including G2, Gorgias, Metadata, Madkudu and also worked for Apple. All businesses, whether eCommerce, DTC or otherwise, grapple with an ever present challenge: “how do we compete?”. Competing on price is difficult, as the race to the bottom has eroded margins almost completely. Competing on product is also easier said than done, because creating a truly innovative product requires huge investments in R & D. So in a market where there is no room in pricing and products are more or less standardised, how can we compete? To answer this question, ask yourself, if given a choice would you buy a certain product from Amazon or a smaller-relatively unknown store? Chances are you would say Amazon. Why? Because you know what to expect in terms of customer experience. A seamless, hasslefree shopping experience is enough to win over customers. In today’s episode, Kunle and Guillaume discuss how creating a seamless, responsive and easy experience for customers can be a key driver of growth. Guillaume talks about what eCommerce can learn from SaaS and also shares some key CX metrics to track for driving growth. ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Nick Shackelford, Managing Partner at Structured Social. Nick is a seasoned performance marketer and media buyer who works with over 100 brands. He is an active part of the ecosystem that is going to be affected by the upcoming iOS changes. His previous appearance on the show was one of our most popular episodes of 2020. If you’ve been following the Martech news in 2020, you may have noticed the ongoing spat between Apple and Facebook. Facebook even put out full-page newspaper ads criticizing Apple. At the center of all the back-and-forth is privacy. More specifically it is a prompt called App Tracking Transparency (ATT), which will rollout in the coming days. This prompt will ask you to Opt-in or Opt-out of data sharing for each of your apps. Why is this a big deal? If you are a DTC or eCommerce brand, then chances are that Facebook ads are a major part of your marketing strategy. Both Facebook and Facebook ads thrive on users data. You get better targeting, metrics and attribution because of this data. But that’s all going to change now. Over 50% of the buying audience have iOS devices. A chunk of those users might stop sharing data, and alter the marketing landscape for good. On today’s episode, Kunle and Nick look at the genesis of ATT, how it is going to affect Facebook marketing and how you can brace for impact when the changes roll out. Whether you’re a marketer, business owner or just a consumer - you’re probably on Facebook and you definitely don’t want to miss this one! ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Andrew D’Souza, Co-Founder and CEO of Clearbanc - a company that helps high growth eCommerce businesses raise money without diluting equity. Clearbanc is the biggest eCommerce investor in the world, having invested more than a billion dollars in almost 3000 businesses since being founded in 2015. We all know eCommerce is booming, and there are opportunities for explosive growth cropping up everywhere. But each business has its limitations. Capitalising on these opportunities usually involves spending more on marketing, growing your team and having bigger inventory. All of these are easier said than done. At the end of the day it comes down to the amount of capital you have on hand. Raising funds is no mean feat either. On one hand you have the option of raising venture capital - where after investing a lot of time and resources you could just lose control of your company; on the other hand, you have debt financing - where you could lose everything you own if things don’t go well. Clearbanc’s mission is to solve this funding dilemma. Clearbanc has the system’s in place to analyse your business and give you an offer instantly. You can raise funds without the hassles and stress of VCs and banks. In today’s episode Kunle and Andrew discuss strategies for DTC businesses to raise funds and grow in the current eCommerce ecosystem. You will get to hear about future trends and opportunities, and how they all tie into being omnichannel. On today’s episode, Kunle reflects back on 2020 and shares his 5 biggest eCommerce lessons and 3 biggest life lessons. It has been a landmark year in many respects and the lessons learnt this year will surely endure in the near future. 2020 started off much like any other year: businesses were making plans and strategies to expand and diversify. But come March, the world came to a grinding halt. Nobody really knew where this would lead to and when things would be “normal” again. Uncertainty ruled the world! But as some of the dust began to settle, one thing was clear - the “business model” of our world is going to change. Stores and businesses pulled down their shutters (many of them for good). People were stuck at home. Human interactions, which we took for granted all along, suddenly disappeared from our lives. In many ways it was chaos. But with chaos also comes opportunity. As most of our lives moved online, eCommerce got a real shot-in-the-arm. eCommerce growth fast-forwarded nearly 4-5 years. The businesses that could pivot and adjust to the new world have recorded their best year to date. We’ve seen a huge shake-up in the way we do business globally. This is going to fundamentally change both sales and marketing strategies going forward. In today’s episode I share some of my key learnings from a year full of learnings, and hope that these will help you and your business in 2021! ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Kristine Venta Diemoz, Senior Manager - go-to-market strategy and operations at eBay, which is the 3rd largest eCommerce website in the US and has a global user base that’s 183 million strong! Product auctions, refurbished goods, difficult-to-find products - these are some of the things many of us immediately associate with eBay. And with good reason. There is no other marketplace quite like eBay. But how good or suitable is eBay for DTC brands? Most DTC brands tend to steer away from eBay for concerns of brand equity and perception. But there are ways to use the unique set up of eBay to your advantage. You have full control on many aspects and also an option to sell without paying fees. Users come to eBay looking for good deals and are not sticklers for brand new goods. This makes eBay ideal for repurposing returned items and offering stock clearances. In today’s episode Kunle and Kristen discuss the unique proposition of the eBay marketplace and why it might be too big to ignore for DTC and eCommerce brands! ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Michael Vadini, Founder & CEO of Glew.io - an eCommerce Analytics and Business Intelligence platform founded in 2014. Glew makes it easy to analyse key data points and make decisions that positively impact your bottom line. Almost every interaction of an online business generates a data point. It is also possible to get your hands on all this data. You are looking at data from your products, traffic, ads, social media, cart, blogs and accounting apps to name a few. It is said that the average online business has no fewer than 26 sources of data. Even for a seasoned data analyst, getting actionable insights from such disparate data is no easy task. As a result, (too) many businesses don’t leverage the data they have to make more informed decisions. Almost every business owner or marketer knows of terms like Average Order Value (AOV), Lifetime Value (LTV) and Cost of Acquisition (CAC). These are the buzzwords that dictate business strategy and ultimately success or failure. Getting accurate reports on these metrics is easier said than done. This is where platforms like Glew come in. With over 95 integrations (and counting), you can harness the power of all your data and boost profitability of your business. In today’s episode Kunle and Michael discuss the evolution of Glew and how it helps businesses solve the riddle of their data. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Taylor Lagace, Partner, Co-Founder of Kynship - an Influencer Marketing Agency. Taylor started out his marketing journey with an NFL Agency before building out the influencer marketing department at Common Thread Collective. Too many growing DTC and eCommerce brands leave influencer marketing out of their marketing strategy. And you can’t really fault them for doing so. The influencer ecosystem is complex in many ways. There are many “wanna-be” influencers with fake/unengaged followers, the “bikini-clad” influencers that have only one type of followers, and others still who quote astronomical figures for one-off posts. Influencers have gotten a bad rep and it’s easy to see why. But at the same time you see brands that have cracked the code of influencer marketing and are using it to skyrocket their growth. How can brands with limited marketing spends leverage the potential of influencers? Our guest today lays out a simple process to get started with influencer marketing while getting your money’s worth. In today’s episode, Kunle and Taylor discuss the nitty-gritties of influencer marketing and bust more than a few myths along the way. If you have questions like: how do I find the right influencers? Or Which social platform works best? Or How do you build a funnel with influencer content? Or even which tools should you use for your campaigns?, then this episode is an absolute goldmine for you! ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Vikas Bhambri, Senior VP Sales at Kustomer - a New York-based Omnichannel CRM platform. Kustomer delivers data from multiple sources through a single customer-view, allowing companies to deliver consistent and personalized customer service. Most eCommerce and DTC companies need repeat customers to be successful. Yet a majority of these companies fall into the trap of only targeting new customers. ECommerce adoption may be at all-time high, but that is also driving up the (dreaded!) cost of acquiring (CAC) new customers. An unsustainable cost of acquisition is one of the leading reasons why startups fail. Maximising the Lifetime Value (LTV) of existing customers is a real focus as eCommerce continues to boom. This is where customer experience (CX) comes in. Realising that CX is crucial is one thing, but getting it right is a different thing altogether. Growing adoption across all digital platforms is changing the ground rules and expectations of CX. There are multiple facets to an effective CX strategy. Getting it right is no longer a good-to-have, it can be the difference between success and failure. Kunle and Vikas discuss the pillars of every effective CX strategy, where to start and how to scale your CX strategy. Whether you are an established brand or a small business, there are great takeaways for you in this episode! ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Tyler Sullivan, Founder of BombTech Golf - an 8-year-old DTC Golf equipment manufacturer. He is also a partner at EcomGrowers - a marketing agency specialising in email marketing, which is also a platinum agency for Klaviyo. In previous episodes, we have had business owners who have spoken about building a self-sufficient team and bringing expertise in-house. On today’s episode, we’ll get the scoop on how to do the opposite - build a successful business with a super lean team. Tyler has built an 8-figure business, but still only has 2 employees. No, that’s not a typo error. Tyler shares his story about how passion, happenstance, smart decisions and (a lot of) hard work has let him build successful businesses that can now run without him. Kunle and Tyler talk about how KPIs are more important than the number of employees you have, and how building a variable-cost business model boosts flexibility and scalability. On today’s episode, Kunle is joined by Saksham Sharda, Creative Director at Outgrow, an interactive marketing engagement platform that enables brands to build and launch interactive calculators and viral quizzes that help engage website visitors and generate more leads. eCommerce and DTC businesses pride themselves on offering their customers a wide variety of products to choose from. Yet most of the time we find that visitors browse a bunch of pages but leave without buying anything. This often gets interpreted as a lack of options - when in fact it’s the opposite. Our guest today argues that customers get overwhelmed by too many choices and simply can’t decide what to buy! This is called Decision or Choice Paralysis. So how can we help customers overcome this dilemma to then click and buy? By giving them a nudge in the right direction so that they quickly zero in on what they came for. This is where interactive marketing content comes in. Creating interactive applets and widgets that fit your products and customers bridges the divide and can lead to higher sales. Kunle and Saksham talk about the why and how of using interactive marketing content. You will get to learn from sample use cases, best practices and creative ideas for interactive content - and how to get it done with simple drag-and-drop tools. We have all seen the Facebook and YouTube ads saying “Start a successful Amazon business with $500”. Many of us might even know someone who is running a successful Amazon business. On today’s episode, Kunle interviews Moshe Saraf, Founder and CEO of Pareto Solutions, an elite performance marketing agency headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel. They specialise in promoting direct-to-consumer and unicorn brands such as eko, Fiverr, NectarSleep, Mixtiles, The Flex Belt, Uprightpose, Puls.com If you live in the US or the EU, chances are that you will most likely have not only seen one of Pareto's fast-paced, product-oriented ads but also purchased a product or service (like Kunle has), that the agency has promoted on Facebook or Snapchat. The focus of our conversation today was on creative led media buying on the Facebook Advertising Platform. Here is a summary of some of the most important points made, Pareto Solutions operate a Creative Leasing Model - this means that they exclusively work with brands with a monthly Facebook ads spend starting from $500,000 - the take on $200,000 as a test to prove their expertise and control not just campaign structure but more importantly control all creatives. When they demonstrate their entire campaign and creative structure to be better, the lease out their creatives to the clients. They apply an 18% campaign management fee to the $200,000 spend and then a 7.5% fee on the campaigns leasing their ad creatives. Moshe says that they spend 80% of their time and focus on eCommerce ads campaigns on either creating creatives or optimising existing creatives. When selling direct-to-consumer you essentially want to create product-oriented ads Their campaign structure is incredibly simple - it is comprised of just 2 campaigns The first frame of creatives are hugely important for engagement - craft them like you craft a landing page - you want to address either the key value or a key pain as early as possible in your creative. Do not limit signals to Facebook by limiting audience sizes or focusing on narrow audiences. ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. Your customers’ journey doesn’t end after a purchase. What happens after a purchase is made, is what differentiates one DTC eCommerce brand from another. For instance, do you have a seamless and automated Return and Customer Service Program in place to assist customers that want to return an item? How is customer experience over a return process? And are you giving customers a sufficient range of options that encourage customer loyalty? What most eCommerce brands miss in their customer retention efforts is that building a relationship with each customer is an investment in itself. One way to look at it is through incentivising your customers with free shipping or store credits. But the real deal happens when you create tailor-fit Customer Retention programs based on your rate of product returns and refunds, your purchase rates, AOV, and your conversion metrics. On today’s episode, Kunle and Joe dig deep into analysing return metrics, industry benchmarks, and a roadmap to building a CX pipeline that reduces refunds and cuts down overheads whilst expanding your customer base. ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses.
