It's been more than 25 years since the Swedish hardcore punk band Refused released their seminal album, “The Shape of Punk to Come.” Their most famous song from that album, “New Noise,” has been called a political anthem and a protest song. It's been used in the Palme d'Or'-winning film “Triangle of Sadness” as well as in the hit show “The Bear.” Last year, frontman Dennis Lyxzén of Refused joined Tom Power to tell us how “New Noise” became a global hit after the band had already called it quits.

The Mind-Body Couple
The Purge: Releasing Emotions Heals Chronic Pain and Illness

The Mind-Body Couple

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2025 30:24 Transcription Available

What if the key to healing chronic pain isn't fixing your symptoms, but releasing the emotions trapped in your body? When our nervous systems get stuck in protection mode due to stress, trauma, or childhood experiences, physical symptoms often follow—creating a feedback loop that's difficult to break. Most of us respond to difficult emotions in ways that keep us stuck. Some disconnect completely, living "neck up" in a state of perpetual analysis (alexithymia). Others view emotions as inherently dangerous, having learned from experiences where emotions seemed overwhelming or unsafe. Many consciously avoid emotions through distraction, never allowing themselves to fully process what's happening in their bodies.Breaking this cycle requires what we call "the purge"—letting yourself fully experience and release emotional energy. This isn't always pretty. It might involve crying, shaking, or journaling raw truths. But when we allow this natural process instead of intellectualizing or ignoring our feelings, we help our nervous system regulate and begin healing. The process starts with recognizing emotions as bodily sensations. Sadness isn't just a concept—it's hollowness in your chest or a pit in your stomach. By approaching these sensations with curiosity rather than resistance, and creating safety through techniques like breathwork and self-compassion, we can release what's been trapped. This approach combines elements from pain reprocessing therapy, somatic experiencing, emotional awareness and expression therapy, and polyvagal theory. When practiced consistently, it creates a positive feedback loop—reducing resistance, releasing emotional energy, regulating your nervous system, and diminishing pain.Ready to transform your relationship with emotions and chronic symptoms? Try our free 20-minute somatic practice for releasing emotions on YouTube, or explore our comprehensive digital course "The Somatic Safety Method" with over 60 specialized practices. Your body has deep wisdom—when you listen and release what it's holding, healing becomes possible.Free Practice: https://youtu.be/CC6wTTaWJaYTanner Murtagh and Anne Hampson are therapists who treat neuroplastic pain and mind-body symptoms. Dana and Tom discuss Inside Out (2015) for its 10th Anniversary: written and directed by Pete Docter with Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley, cinematography by Patrick Lin and Kim White, music by Michael Giacchino, starring Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, and Lewis Black.Plot Summary: Inside Out takes place largely inside the mind of 11-year-old Riley as she navigates a difficult move from Minnesota to San Francisco. Her emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—are personified and operate from Headquarters, guiding her reactions and memories. When Joy and Sadness are accidentally swept out of Headquarters, the remaining emotions struggle to manage Riley's turmoil. As Joy learns to appreciate the value of Sadness, the film explores the complexity of growing up, emotional balance, and the importance of embracing all feelings.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome02:19 Cast of Inside Out03:04 Relationship(s) with Inside Out10:00 Background for Inside Out15:40 What is Inside Out About?18:59 Did Dana Like Inside Out?20:14 Plot Summary for Inside Out21:58 Did You Know?27:12 First Break29:07 Best Performance(s)38:30 Best Scene(s)43:46 Second Break44:25 In Memoriam48:20 Best/Funniest Lines49:25 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy53:15 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance56:35 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty58:04 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness59:42 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:01:04 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:02:29 Remaining Questions and Final Thoughts01:07:54 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/inside-out-2015For the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Inside Out, Pixar, emotions, movie review, animation, family, nostalgia, film analysis, character development, storytelling, Disney, Amy Poehler, Pete Docter, Mindy Kaling, Michael Giacchino, Lewis Black, Kyle McLachlan, Diane Lane, Bill Hader, Phyllis SmithRonny Duncan Studios

Sadness and Joy are the final pairing in our emotional practice. Sadness, or Karuna, is a natural, healthy emotion that arises when we face disappointment, loss, or attachment. It can lead to depression if not processed. We feel sadness in the body as lethargy, withdrawal, or physical discomfort. However, sadness can also open our hearts, fostering compassion, tolerance, and understanding, as seen in figures like the Dalai Lama. Recognising impermanence, sadness can lead us to deeper joy, or Hasya, which expresses itself as happiness, delight, and euphoria. Joy is vulnerable, tethered to sadness, and calls us to be present and appreciate life's beauty. While joy can be fleeting, emotional agility allows us to navigate both emotions. A “Gratitude List” or “Annoy and Joy” list helps cultivate resilience, balancing sadness with the joy that brings fulfilment and freedom. By embracing both emotions, we open to greater love, creativity, and compassion. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. To support Zephyr Yoga Podcast, donate here. I have always wondered about people who go through tragedy, and then fall into profound grief. Such that their lives change, trajectories bend, and a state of being moribund sets in.   In much of our existences, we are all living half-lives in our own way, pur-blind, half-dissatisfied, fully-disgruntled. The world refuses to work according to our diktats or wishes. And we are being continually rebuffed or embarrassed. Till we take it as normal. And then what do most of us do? Chin up. Take the blow. Move on. Things invariably add up somewhere. And find some sort of an equilibrium.   Because the future is a consummate stitcher of 'rafoo', a darner of torn existences.   But then there are those whose lives don't find their equilibrium, those who stay mired, however impractically we might think, in the turbid morbidity of past tragedies. For so many people, lives stop when their love dies, or heartbreak breaks a bond with life which they assumed was irrefutable, or a financial muscle breaks and their whole existence collapses.   They lose the will to find light, the flex to transition into an alternate reality, the humility to seek redemption, the ability to let go of happenstances and embrace realities, to learn, absorb, embrace and then become the light.   They never understand the value of taking life seriously but never so much that it becomes both a vice and a vise.   Because that's when they find themselves as castaways in their own stories, forgoing their ability to find a log, and the wind, to set sail again, this time with a fearlessness bordering on ferocity.   If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems on the dramas of life -  Sometimes Life Leaves You Alone Waiting for my flight to Chennai at the Kolkata airport Why I Disagree With the Moon Follow me on Instagram at @sunilgivesup. Had to talk about this today because too many people are stuck. Sitting in sadness like it's permanent. Like there's nothing they can do about it. Listen up. There's a massive difference between sadness and grief. Grief is real. When you lose someone. When something's actually gone forever. You process that. You feel it. You honor it. That's necessary. But sadness. That's different. Sadness is a perceived lack of options. Key word. Perceived. You got knocked down. Job loss. Relationship ended. Business failed. Whatever it is. You're sitting there thinking there's nothing you can do. That's bullshit. You have options. You just can't see them right now. The moment you ask yourself "What can I do about this" everything changes. Not "woe is me what can I do." But actually. What are my options here. Stop playing victim to your circumstances. Start looking for your options. They're there. You just have to be willing to see them.Connect:Connect with Rick: https://linktr.ee/mrrickjordanSubscribe & Review to ALL IN with Rick Jordan on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/RickJordanALLIN
