In this episode of the Building Better Developers podcast, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche dive deep into a critical—but often misunderstood—element of project management: setting deadlines. This episode goes beyond the basics of timelines and introduces the psychology, strategy, and communication needed to make deadlines effective, not stressful. Why Setting Deadlines Matters for Business Projects Deadlines define a project's rhythm. As Rob puts it, “the deadline is the finish line.” It's not just about when code is complete—it's about when the product is ready for delivery, after testing, packaging, training, and documentation. Deadlines force prioritization. Without them, projects risk becoming endless cycles of scope creep and perfectionism. But setting arbitrary or unrealistic deadlines can just as easily derail progress.
Well, here we are—the final episode of Informatics in the Round (we think!). After five incredible years, 38 episodes, and thousands of listeners, we've decided it's time to wrap up this journey. But first, we're taking a minute (or maybe two hours) to reflect on this wild ride—and we've brought some people you might recognize! In this episode, we pull some clips from the archive to help us look back at our best moments, favorite topics, and silliest slip-ups over the years. We take you through our “Top 5” topics that we loved to talk about the most: electronic health records, patient privacy, public health, health equity, and AI. We will also share some stories you didn't hear (like that time we forgot to hit records—oops), how the pandemic reshaped our personal and professional lives, and the lessons that will stick with us. To lead us through our Top 5, we invited back some of our favorite guests to reflect and discuss the future of the field: Dr. Yaa Kumah-Crystal, MD, MPH, MS, is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Pediatric Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center whose research focuses on documentation in healthcare communication. Dr. Ellen Wright Clayton, JD, MD, is a professor of Pediatrics, Law, and Health Policy at Vanderbilt University Law School and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her research focuses on the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics research. Dr. Melissa McPheeters, PhD, MPH, is the Senior Director for Analytics at RTI International, as well as an esteemed epidemiologist and public health informatician. Her work focuses on building interdisciplinary teams to address complex problems across health, public health, and data modernization processes. Dr. Consuelo H. Wilkins, MD, is the Senior Vice President and Senior Associate Dean of Health Equity at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Associate Director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. Her work attempts to bring together community stakeholders and create collaboration initiatives to improve community health and biomedical research. Dr. Chris Callison-Burch, PhD, MS, is a Professor of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on natural language processing and generative AI. So, is this really goodbye? Maybe, maybe not. We can never sit still for long. But for now, let's raise a glass, share a few laughs, and remember the good ol' times! We can't leave without saying thank you to all of you for being part of the ride, for listening to us on your jog or your commute, and for engaging critically with all we've had to say. It's been an honor. Thank you to all the guests who have joined us throughout the last five years. Thank you for contributing your expertise, your lived experiences, and your unfiltered thoughts. Thank you to the musicians who bravely stepped into conversations about topics they knew little about and for offering up their questions. You ensured we spoke to everyone, and your music said the rest of what our words couldn't convey. To all our guests, your generosity with your time and your knowledge is what made this podcast what it was. Our mission was always to make informatics intelligible so that you and all your friends and family can engage confidently with the topic. We hope you now have the language to feel empowered navigating this crazy, awesome, flawed, fascinating healthcare system. For now, this is Kevin Johnson, Harris Bland, and Ellie Shuert signing off! In this episode of English Plus Podcast, we dive into three captivating topics that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew. First, we explore The Mystery of The Turin King List, an ancient Egyptian document that might hold the secrets of forgotten rulers—kings erased from history. Could this crumbling papyrus rewrite the history of Egypt? Next, we challenge a common belief in Deserts: Hot, Cold, or Somewhere In Between?. You may be surprised to learn that not all deserts are scorching hot—some are freezing cold! We'll break down what makes a desert a desert and why your assumptions about these extreme landscapes might need a rethink. Finally, we take a look at the life of one of history's greatest artists in The Starving Artist: Why Van Gogh Only Sold a Few Paintings. Despite creating over 2,000 works of art, Vincent van Gogh struggled to sell his paintings during his lifetime. What was it about his art and his era that kept him from finding success? And what does his story tell us about how we value creativity? Throughout the episode, we'll also explore vocabulary in context, helping you sharpen your language skills, and ask thought-provoking questions that will keep you reflecting long after the episode ends. Our first caller is a young woman who expects to meet a man who is making six figures, who is well traveled and mature, but is having a hard time finding someone living up to her standards. Iyanla then has on Zakiya Fatin the author of What's Real, What's Not, and Somewhere In-Between, and together they discuss the do's, don'ts and oh no they didn'ts mentioned in her book. We had the pleasure of interviewing Eloise over Zoom video!23-year-old London-based singer-songwriter Eloise releases her debut album Drunk On A Flight via AWAL, available everywhere now!Branching out beyond the soft, jazz-tinged soul of her early work, Drunk On A Flight sees Eloise broadening her horizons and applying her pop nous to a much wider palette of sounds. It is a coming of age album about embracing the moment; a heartbreak record that empowers listeners to luxuriate in their feelings –however messy or complicated they may be. Eloise's timelessness, vulnerability, and whip-smart lyrics effortlessly captivate the attention of listeners. The album's title track and first single, “Drunk On A Flight,” is a breezy pop anthem that puts Eloise's natural songwriting abilities at the forefront, the song tells the tale of a love gone sour. “Giant Feelings” details the complicated, messy emotions that Eloise is trying to confront following the end of her relationship. The accompanying music video, directed by Tess Lafia and shot in one take, sees Eloise lamenting over her past relationship while looking out over the city of Los Angeles and ruefully hoping it rains on her former partner. Eloise shows her cleverness and songwriting prowess in the third single, “Therapist,” a whip-smart, sorry-not-sorry “diss track” skewering emotional codependency with kiss-offs like, “you're acting like a boy but I fell for a man.” As Cool Hunting said, Eloise has a true talent for making “expressive, absorbing pop.” The focus track of the album, “I Take It Back,” circles back to the flight mentioned in the album's opener. It's an upbeat, catchy track that details the back-and-forth emotions of a confusing relationship and Eloise reassuring the subject that in case her plane crashes, she takes back the negative things she's said. The visualizer for the new track provides a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the new record. The album follows two critically-acclaimed EPs, This Thing Called Living (2019) and Eloise's latest project Somewhere In-Between that The Line of Best Fit notes something only “a deft songwriter could manifest.”On October 7th, Eloise will kick off her North American tour at The Foundry in Philadelphia, PA. The 19-date tour spans across both coasts with stops at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles and Thalia Hall in Chicago and will conclude on November 3rd at Webster Hall in New York City.Eloise leaned into her long standing love of pure pop and the sense of liberation she was experiencing being single for the first time in four years as inspiration for the album. She challenged herself to continue writing every single day, quickly amassing a pool of more than 50 songs, from which she assembled Drunk On A Flight with South London producer Conor Albert. The resulting record is a deep dive into the complexities of love and relationships, inspired both by observed experiences and Eloise's own dating history. “Ending a long-term relationship at 23, you feel such a loss of time and adolescence and that can make you so frustrated,” she explains. “What have I learned from all of this? And what am I stuck with at the end of all of this? My songwriting has always been honest, but this feels raw –like I'm exploring all the shades of emotion.”We want to hear from you! While almost everyone is sharing the most polished and curated versions of themselves, Braxton Cook is asking “Who Are You When No One Is Watching?” Actually, as it turns out, it's a question he's asking of himself, and in a somewhat postmodern and ironic twist, he's doing it quite publicly on his new record, called (surprise!) Who Are You When No One Is Watching? which comes out February 24 on Nettwerk Records. Braxton Cook is an artist of his time - that is, he's hard to define, hard to categorize, highly educated, determined to share his most authentic self and in a constant state of searching. He's a Juilliard trained jazz saxophone player who has worked with jazz artists Christian Scott, Christian McBride Big Band, Jon Batiste and Marquis Hill as well as more mainstream artists like Solange Knowles and Tom Misch. He's also a deeply sensitive solo artist, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who is committed to keeping the saxophone alive in soul music, speaking his own personal truth in his songs, and bridging the gap between jazz, soul, and alternative R&B. In other words, he's a millennial jazz artist. No wonder he opened his 2017 album Somewhere In Between with the song “Millenial Music”. We spoke recently about his trajectory, starting out on the local scene in Washington D.C. as a high school and college student (he spent two years at Georgetown University studying English with a concentration in African American Studies and playing gigs in town before transferring to Juilliard to pursue his jazz education), his evolution from soloist to singer, sideman to leader, and child to parent. We also talked about the value of nostalgia and deep emotional connection in his writing, intentionality in raising children, his determination to make “music with impact”, where he cut his teeth and if that has anything to do with his lifelong fascination with dentistry. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios www.braxtoncook.com

Sorry once again for the lateness. And sorry for the below sub-standard audio quality. Recent recording challenges have caused some problems on many levels. But it's a fun ep and I think you'll like it. Tonight, Pan is going to get to the bottom of this. Murders will be solved, double-crosses will take place, twists and turns will abound. Hold on to your butts. It seems like I'm walking into more confrontations or otherwise tense situations and my need for cool songs is on the rise. The latest addition to that playlist is Somewhere In Between by Sunbathe. Real fun stuff. Listen to the rest of the record on their bandcamp or wherever you like to stream music? And maybe follow em on social media Slight correction: it turns out it is something of a myth that Scottish claymores were relatively blunt. They weren't like katana-sharp, but they had the edge you'd expect on a sword of that era. Or so I'm told. Our team member Andy is on the road to recovery after suffering a stroke and spending 91 days in the hospital, hopefully, we will be getting our website updated with the bio's for no 207 to our latest 2014. A few more new names appeared for the first time. Brooklyn-based composer and producer Rachika Nayar finds the protean guitarist and producer expanding on the ghostly netherworlds of her debut with vivid fluorescent cinematic maximalism. Two new releases of dark experimental ambient drone music on the Russian label Zhelezobeton. Using analogue synths & field recordings, Field Lines Cartographer often creates dark, occasionally bucolic soundscapes. Joseph L Young's fifty-five-minute excursion into a sonic landscape shifts under the listener's feet with twists and turns. Cass Anawaty & Brian Fechino presents a collection of four pieces that range from pensive and reflective ambient meditations using mainly guitars, & Psycho & Plastic's latest single lingers in the memory once it's passed, the merging of delicateness found within the piano and the mournful tones elevate the single in a delightfully unexpected way. Another Great Podcast with the Legendary All-Pro Running Back with the Minnesota Vikings Super Bowl Teams. He might be the best running back in NFL history. After all, he invented the "Spin Move" used by all running backs today. That earned him his nickname, "The Spin Doctor". Most would argue that Chuck is the best running back in Vikings history. We welcome the one and only Chuck Foreman to "Somewhere In Between" with Coach Mulls and The Coop (SIB) tomorrow morning at SIB's world head quarters at the Coldwell Banker offices in the Denver Tech Center. So look for the launch tomorrow on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Show some love and tune in after the launch tomorrow. Support this podcast
A new twist to our podcast "Somewhere In Between" with Coach Mulls and The Coop, "Quick Shots" is a shorter (15 to 30 minutes) single topic that is hot around the country where the hosts debate a guest. Mulls and The Coop discuss the opening weekend of the NFL Playoffs for 2021. Each game is covered with a special focus on 5 "Old School" QB's with 107 playoff games under their collective belts. The contrast will be the old schoolers against the young bucks. Old schoolers include Brady, Brees, Rivers, Roethlisberger, and Rodgers matching up against youngsters Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Ryan Tannehill with Mitch Trubiski coming back for the Bears. See who Coop and Mulls pick in the finals and the Super Bowl Champ. Support this podcast

This is a very entertaining podcast and it is up in audio and video. "Somewhere In Between" with Coach Mulls and the Coop welcomes Ed Marinaro, former running back for the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Jets with Joe Namath and Seattle Seahawks. Ed was a runner up for the Heisman Trophy out of, believe it or not, Cornell University where his career and season stats set records for a running back as the BEST running back in college football history. His records held up in all of college football for 3 decades. In all Marinaro set 16 NCAA records at Cornell. Marinaro was inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991 For you young footballers, Marinaro is a star of the hit TV show "Blue Mountain State" as he plays the coach in the show, Coach Marty Daniels. Marinaro's role is one of the most popular coaches in TV history especially with the college crowds over the last decade. Marinaro also starred in several other movies and TV series including as Officer Joe Coffey in Hill Street Blues, Joey Buttafuoco in the Amy Fisher Story, and as a regular on Laverne and Shirley. HIGHLIGHT: Ed has a son (Eddie) who went through his senior season in high school this fall as a QB in South Carolina. He is headed in his father's footsteps to play collegiately at Cornell. During the podcast Ed goes into some depth with the struggles with his son's development and ultimately the recruiting process in a troubled year for football. Very interesting and informative. This is a great podcast for everyone who is not only interested in Ed's career in college, the NFL and as a very successful Hollywood actor currently on a great run with the TV series "Blue Mountain State" as Coach Marty Daniels, and iconic character for the 35 and under age bracket, AND his very normal existence as a high school football dad. Enjoy. "Somewhere In Between" with Coach Mulls and The Coop Coach Ryan Mullaney Hosts with CoHost Denver Bronco Mark Cooper These guys will tackle strong topics of the day. This episode digs deep into the mysteries behind the cancellation of the fall 2020 football season in most liberal states - while others states play. It will affect recruiting in a big way and will ruin the year for seniors in high school and college. Coop and Mulls dig deep in this episode. Somewhere in between the radical arguments of today's world topics of sports, faith, politics, the economy, and the massive spread of drug and alcohol addiction lies a lonely place with evasive conclusions called the truth. "Somewhere In Between" with Coach Mulls and The Coop has a mission of getting to the TRUTH, that place where revelation lies and wisdom prevails. Coach Ryan Mullaney, a former football coach and pro player with an unsuccessful NFL Career being cut 5 times by 4 NFL teams, hosts the podcast with Co-Host Mark Cooper, successful NFL football star and former Denver Bronco (Oh yeah! He loves to floss that Super Bowl Ring). The alter egos of these two makes for interesting if not hilarious verbal punches thrown during their natural dialogue. Mulls is a former defensive lineman and Coop is a former Offensive lineman...natural born enemies. Support this podcast
Have you ever had someone trying to dictate where you should go? In the car, in school, in life? Or worse, did you let them tell you what to do even if you knew it wasn't the right move? My guest on this week's podcast is Neha O'Rourke. She was in that place, searching for a way to have a career she loved. She shared with me that we work 90,000 hours over our lifetime. No wonder so many of us want to be happy at our job. That's a lot of time spent away from our families, with other people, sharing our gifts and using our precious energy. Some will say "a job isn't supposed to be fun", that's why they call it work. But I say we spend WAY TOO MUCH time at work (or even at home), to not be happy doing that work, with people who lift us up. I don't care if you're a stay at home mom (which is the HARDEST job in the world), or if you are the CEO of your company, working takes up the biggest part of our day. We'd be crazy not to want it to be joyful, at least part of the time. We'd be crazy not to use our strengths, engaging others, creating and making the world a better place. Somewhere in between no longer and not yet, was where the magic happened for Neha…listen in to found out how. Find out more info about Neha below: Neha O’Rourke is an award-winning Career Coach and Founder of Somewhere In Between Coaching, a company dedicated to empowering unfulfilled women to design a career and life they love. Since founding Somewhere In Between, Neha has served hundreds of women through her coaching programs that have been embraced by brands such as Expedia, WeWork, NEMA, and more. Her thought leadership has been featured in publications such as The Washington Post, Yoga Digest and Lux and Concord. Neha has also been a featured expert commentator on Fox 32. Among her accolades, Neha was named “20 on the Rise” in 2019 in the coaching category by Honeybook and Rising Tide Society. Prior to Somewhere In Between Coaching, Neha worked in advertising where she architected strategies and campaigns for nationally recognized brands. As a result of physical, mental and emotional burnout, Neha shifted her career to launch Somewhere In Between Coaching. She fundamentally believes that life is too short to be “surviving” your career and that every woman deserves to thrive, both professionally and personally. From his first foray into music with a saxophone at age 12 through to releasing three studio albums, Gary has a great story to tell with some very interesting highlights. He brings in his wife's famous no-bake cookies and steps up to a blind taste-test challenge to try a very unusual flavor of potato chip. Gary's song "Somewhere In Between" has been featured during December and he plays it live on the air along with another great song about his father's old GMC pickup which Gary is driving to this very day.

Singer/Songwriter Adam Hood knows the dual life of living in small town America while traveling as a singer/songwriter. “Somewhere In Between” is an ode to the people, the pace and what it means to leave a small town for a different life than what you know. The Alabama native’s album was recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios and was produced by Oran Thornton who also produced Miranda Lambert 'Revolution,' Eric Church 'Caught In The Act: Live,' and Angaleena Presley 'Wrangled’. Hood is most known for co-writing songs like Brent Cobb’s “King of Alabama,” Anderson East’'s “”Surrender"” and album cuts recorded by Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town and Lee Ann Womack. The album’s latest track “Easy Way,” is co-written with Pat McLaughlin and premiered on Billboard. The video for the “loose country rocker” (Rolling Stone Country) “She Don’t Love Me” is also on CMT and features fellow songwriter Brent Cobb. We chat about the song “The Heart of A Queen,” “Alabama Moon” and others. Adam does spend his time somewhere in between his home state of Alabama and Nashville and chat about how that works for him and his career.

Real artistry is about peeling back the layers of your soul and allowing the creative truth to take form. Russell Taylor taps into that creative space and unlocks a masterpiece in his latest musical offering, War of Hearts, on his own Indigo Blue label. Far from a novice in the music game, Russell – a self-professed nomad – has poured out his heart and soul on the world stages, including stops in London, Amsterdam and Paris as well as famed stateside venues from The Mint and The Roxy in Los Angeles to SOB’s and Joe’s Pub in New York. Russell’s previous offerings Somewhere In Between(2007) and Confessional, a Soultracks.com ‘must have records’ (2010) – are sprinkled with gentle gems that have satisfied the appetites of music lovers worldwide. Russell’s (aka Rt!) 3rd studio album “War of Hearts”, includes collaborations with Grammy award winning producer Needlz (Lil’ Wayne, Bruno Mars, Drake, Lupe Fiasco, K Michelle), Tim Kvanosky of Tiny Hearts and Salakida Kali. In early 2014, Russell Taylor becomes the first to win the coveted “You Oughta Know” distinction after beating over four hundred competitors in VH1’s first ever crowd-sourced contest on Artists.VH1.com, VH1’s music discovery site and join the ranks of famous “You Oughta Know” alumni including Adele, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Lorde, The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons and many more. “An emerging artists with diverse musical influences and incredible talent, Russell Taylor is the embodiment of what the ‘You Oughta Know’ franchise is all about”, said Rick Krim, EVP Music and Talent Programming, VH1.

Through his travels, Russell has created a fan base as diverse as his multi-genre catalog of recordings. Russell's previous offerings Somewhere In Between (2007) and Confessional - a Soultracks.com ‘must have records' (2010) - are sprinkled with gentle gems like the alluring “2B Loved” and the stripped down, acoustic brilliance of “All Said & Done” to the sexually charged “Hands 2 Myself” and the military cadence of “Fair Game,” and have satisfied the appetites of music lovers the world over. Additionally, Russell has shared the stage with major artists from Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott and India.Arie, to legends Isaac Hayes and Patti LaBelle; an amazing fete for an independent artist. The textbook definition of an independent artist, Russell Taylor continues to embrace his freedom on War of Hearts, as he unabashedly takes the helm of his artistry and navigates his own course. “I made this record full of songs that I'd like to hear,” professes Russell.
