In this episode, Peter Grossenbacher, PhD—Naropa faculty member and psychological researcher—explores the science of psychology through his research on perception, sensory experience, and psychedelic states, and how these insights bridge disciplines from counseling to biology. Drawing on his work at the intersection of meditation, consciousness, and psychological science, he reflects on the transformative potential of contemplative practice—how shifts in perspective can reshape our experience of self and world. He also examines the limitations of frameworks like the DSM in capturing the fullness of human experience, and how Naropa's emphasis on authenticity, presence, and relationship fosters academic freedom and spontaneous, teachable moments in the classroom.Special Guest: Peter Grossenbacher, PhD.

In this episode of Mindful Mondays, we continue our exploration of the senses by turning toward two of the most emotional and memory-soaked senses we have: smell and taste. For many neurodivergent nervous systems, these senses are anything but minor. A single smell can transport you straight back into childhood. A single bite of food can soothe your nervous system - or overwhelm it in seconds. Smell and taste are deeply wired into emotion, memory, reward, safety, and threat. In this episode, Ashley explores:* Why smell is so powerfully linked to memory and emotion* How taste and scent can become tools for comfort and regulation* Why strong smells, food textures, and certain flavours can feel overwhelming or even traumatic* Safe foods, sensory aversions, migraines, and food obsession through a nervous system lens* Synesthesia, sensory wisdom, and the metaphorical meaning of taste and smell* How to build gentle flexibility without forcing or retraumatising yourselfThe episode closes with a guided imaginal practice to help you explore smell, taste, memory, and sensory safety at your own pace. This is an invitation to understand your sensory profile more deeply - not with judgment, but with curiosity, compassion, and respect for the way your nervous system is wired. If this work resonates and you'd like to explore it more deeply, Ashley is currently taking expressions of interest for her final round of one-to-one journeys beginning in May, as well as a small group cohort beginning in September.

In this episode of Relationships Rule, I had the pleasure of speaking with intuitive artist and spiritual teacher Heather Eck about seeing people and relationships in a completely different way.Heather experiences the world through synesthesia, a condition where senses overlap. In her case, people, emotions, and experiences appear as color. What began as a unique way of perceiving the world eventually became the foundation for her work as an artist and guide helping others reconnect with their intuition.During our conversation, Heather shared how color can reveal emotional patterns, why intuition often speaks before logic does, and how paying attention to subtle signals can deepen our relationships. We also talked about her journey from a successful corporate HR career into the creative and spiritual work she now does helping people gain clarity and healing through color and art. What I found especially fascinating was how Heather uses color as a language for understanding people. It reminded me that strong relationships are built not only on what we say, but also on how deeply we listen and how present we are with one another. This conversation invites us to slow down, trust our intuition a little more, and become more aware of the energy we bring into our relationships.Key TakeawaysSynesthesia creates a different lens for understanding people - Heather experiences people, emotions, and environments through color, giving her a unique way of sensing energy and emotional patterns.Intuition often speaks before logic - Many decisions cannot be solved through analysis alone. Learning to notice body signals and intuitive cues can bring clarity.Color can reveal emotional patterns - The colors people are drawn to or avoid may reflect underlying emotions or experiences.Creative expression can be a path to healing - Art can help people process emotions, reconnect with themselves, and move through difficult experiences.Stronger relationships come from deeper awareness - Paying attention to subtle emotional signals can help us understand others and connect more authentically. In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won't regret it. How can someone control a computer with their mind? In this episode, Austin Lubetkin talks about his patent for the first interface that would allow a fully paralyzed individual to type and control a computer with their brain. Austin is an Autistic artist, aerospace-software engineer, and inventor. He has synesthesia, a phenomenon in which stimuli that would typically activate one sense can stimulate other senses at the same time. This has allowed him to create unique and accessible art experiences, some meant to make people even touch and hear colors. Austin uses his art to spread awareness of various mental conditions. Welcome to Autism Tips & Tools, where we highlight the best practical guidance from previous episodes of Autism Knows No Borders. Whether you're a self-advocate, a family member, or a service provider, there's something here for you! This conversation with Alexis and Austin Lubetkin was originally released on November 10, 2022. Dive into the bizarre and fascinating on this eclectic episode of The Other Side of Midnight. Host Lionel and his cast of late-night callers tackle a veritable cornucopia of topics, starting with the weird world of hallucinogens, drug-fueled historical misadventures like Doc Ellis pitching a no-hitter on acid, and the paralyzing effects of 1970s Quaaludes. Buckle up for mind-bending neurological deep-dives into synesthesia, phantom vision in the blind, and the electrical origins of deja vu. The late-night existentialism reaches its peak with philosophical detours into the ethics of hell, the concept of limbo, and a caller's baffling debate over whether God committed adultery with Joseph's wife. From a man who permanently lost his sanity after winning $37,000 at the racetrack to stoner theories about the order of the alphabet, this episode is a hilarious, mysterious, and profound journey into the human mind. Dr. Brandon Crawford welcomes Greyson Ghali, a non-speaking 8-year-old who uses a spelling board to communicate. This conversation pulls back the curtain on the "brain-body disconnect," the reality of apraxia, and the extraordinary intuitive abilities that non-speaking individuals often possess.Greyson was initially labeled with "intellectual impairment," a diagnosis his parents now realize was a mistake caused by testing methods that rely on motor skills rather than cognitive ability. Through the Rapid Prompting Method (RPM), Greyson found his voice at age 4, proving he was already literate and excelling in advanced subjects like World War II history and chemistry. The episode also touches on the "unexplainable," including Greyson's ability to "visit" Dr. Crawford in a dream and his mastery over physical electronics using his mind.Products 528 Innovations Lasers NeuroSolution Full Spectrum CBD NeuroSolution Broad Spectrum CBD NeuroSolution Stimpod STEMREGEN® Learn MoreFor more information, resources, and podcast episodes, visit https://tinyurl.com/3ppwdfpm

Send us a textEpisode 3 — Life in Color: The Synesthetic Experience Throughout LifeBe Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell featuring Ann-Marie BoudreauWhat if sound had colour? What if taste carried emotion? What if memory lived in sensation rather than words? In this final episode of The Power of Sound trilogy, Dr. Michelle Greenwell and Ann-Marie Boudreau explore synesthesia as a natural, multi-sensory way of experiencing life—where sound, colour, emotion, movement, memory, and touch weave together into a unified language of awareness.Rather than something rare or mysterious, synesthesia is explored here as an innate human capacity—one that supports creativity, healing, healthy aging, and navigating life transitions with greater trust and presence. In this episode, we explore:• Synesthesia as sound-to-colour, taste-to-emotion, touch-to-memory• How multi-sensory awareness quiets the analytical mind• Reconnecting with body-based intelligence and intuitive knowing• Listening with the heart, not just the ears• Learning to trust subtle sensations as guidance• How colour, sound, and frequency support emotional resilience and vitality throughout life☕ Opening Tea Ritual — Kitchen Party (Natalie MacMaster Set)As with every episode of Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell, we begin with an intentional tea ritual.Kitchen Party is a vibrant purple tea celebrating connection, music, friendship, and shared joy.Affirmation:Lift your spirits by connecting music and friends in celebratioEach episode of the Be Well with Dr. Michelle Greenwell podcast includes the BioEnergetic Wellness Formula. Send us a textThis week on the podcast Azam stops by the discuss her new music, Synesthesia, immigrating tot he US, living through war, menopause, and more. *****It is a song of destruction, of fire consuming everything in its path, yet within that annihilation lies the threshold of renewal, and the promise of something new,” explains internationally beloved singer/songwriter/producer AZAM ALI about her new single “To Pieces,” which is released today, September 4, 2025 via COP International. Taken from her upcoming album Synesthesia which will be released on November 14, 2025, “To Pieces” is a gorgeously aural landscape of echoing strings, cinematic keyboard washes, and tribal percussions, with Azam's ethereal vocals floating above it all like a luminescent spectre. Deeply layered both musically and lyrically, her sixth solo album Synesthesia is an escape from this tumultuous world, but not without the impact of the cultural and political upheaval. Named after the sensory phenomenon that allows individuals to experience the senses in a different way such as tasting colors or feeling sounds, “synesthesia” is a concept that runs throughout the album. The title track's accelerating beat contrasts with Azam's wispy vocals, generating a neural response that is comforting yet daunting. “This song is very special for me because I tried to capture what the sense of synesthesia that I experience is, the way my senses sometimes overlap, blending sound, color, and texture into a single, immersive perception.” The gauzy and delicate “Autumn of Goodbye” offers a softer and radiant ambiance with Azam holding onto the final moments before letting go (Walk with me / Under the sky / And offer me / The stars / On the way down). Synesthesia also offers two eye-opening covers: Tim Buckley's “Song to the Siren” and Natalie Merchant's “This House Is On Fire.” The former is a moody take on the original, highlighting Azam's octave jumping vocal prowess, while the latter transforms Merchant's languid calypso beat into a propulsive song with Middle Eastern flourishes. “My music is an invitation to step beyond the confines of time, place, and the fragile vessel of flesh into a universe without borders,” Azam explains. “I want the listener to feel carried into the vastness of the ethereal, where freedom breathes, and every note reveals our part in a greater design. In this realm, we are no longer solitary beings, but shining stars drawn together into galaxies, each tone a reminder that we are participants in a cosmic symphony far larger than ourselves.” ******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. On this episode of FDE+, Kortney Harmon and Mike Wolford, CEO of LexDuo, explore how AI is redefining what it means to be a recruiter—and why the future belongs to those who build with it, not just use it.They discuss how recruiters are moving beyond basic prompting into programming and workflow design—creating custom GPTs, connecting APIs, and automating tasks that once drained hours from their day. Mike also explains how imagination has become a recruiter's new competitive advantage and outlines the ethical and legal considerations that come with building AI-driven systems.Key Takeaways • The three levels of AI adoption and how each elevates recruiter performance • Why creativity, not coding, defines success in the AI-driven era • How API connections can integrate your ATS, CRM, and communication tools • The coming divide between corporate TA and staffing—and where opportunity grows • How to “automate and elevate” recruiting by combining AI precision with human judgmentDiscover how forward-thinking recruiters are using AI to amplify—not replace—the human side of hiring.___________Follow Mike Wolford on LinkedIn: LinkedIn | Mike Check out his website: lexduo.net Follow Crelate on LinkedIn: Crelate Want to learn more about Crelate? Matt explores the fascinating world of synesthesia today, challenging the notion that it's a rare quirk by proposing a bold claim: in subtle ways, we are all synesthetes. This idea is powerfully demonstrated by the famous "Bouba/Kiki" test, which reveals our brain's innate tendency to connect abstract shapes and sounds. The episode argues that this fundamental cross-wiring is not a mere curiosity but the very operating system for human thought, shaping everything from our metaphors to the development of language itself. The journey continues by exploring how these sensory perceptions can be programmed externally, as shown in a remarkable study linking synesthetes' color associations to a popular Fisher-Price toy. Matt also discusses the cognitive superpowers that can accompany synesthesia, like superior memory, and its profound connection to autism. Ultimately, the episode illuminates how everyday phrases like "feeling blue" are not just figures of speech, but echoes of the synesthetic software running in all our brains, constantly mixing senses to build our unique perception of reality. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.Craving more energy, better metabolism, and immunity? Uli Jon Roth is a German guitarist, composer, and visionary best known for his groundbreaking work with the Scorpions in the 1970s and for pioneering a neo-classical approach to rock guitar. Born on December 18, 1954, in Düsseldorf, Germany, Roth joined the Scorpions in 1973, helping shape their early sound on albums such as Fly to the Rainbow (1974), In Trance (1975), Virgin Killer (1976), and Taken by Force (1977). His emotive phrasing, fluid bends, and extended melodic solos set him apart from his contemporaries, influencing generations of guitarists including Yngwie Malmsteen, Kirk Hammett, and Steve Vai. Roth's classical leanings and improvisational flair brought a sense of artistry and spirituality to the hard rock landscape of the time. After leaving the Scorpions in 1978, Roth formed his own band, Electric Sun, which became the platform for him to explore a more personal and philosophical form of music. Albums such as Earthquake (1979), Fire Wind (1981), and Beyond the Astral Skies (1985) blended Hendrix-inspired rock with symphonic and spiritual elements, showcasing his evolution from guitar hero to musical poet. His lyrics and themes often touched on mysticism, universal consciousness, and the search for enlightenment—concepts that would define much of his later work.Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Roth expanded beyond rock, composing orchestral works and developing his own instrument, the Sky Guitar, which extends the range of a traditional electric guitar to encompass violin-like tones. This innovation allowed him to perform complex classical pieces alongside rock compositions, bridging two worlds few musicians had combined so seamlessly. His projects such as Metamorphosis of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Under a Dark Sky demonstrated his ambition to merge classical grandeur with electric intensity. In the decades since, Uli Jon Roth has remained a respected figure in both rock and classical circles, often described as a philosopher with a guitar. He continues to tour internationally, performing retrospective concerts that celebrate both his Scorpions legacy and his later symphonic works. Revered for his technical mastery, tone, and spiritual depth, Roth's influence endures as one of the most unique voices in the evolution of modern guitar music—a true bridge between the soul of classical composition and the freedom of rock improvisation.https://ujr.info/

Have you ever heard a color, or seen a piece of music? Maybe you’ve tasted a sunset, or felt a particular smell? If so, you might have synesthesia. It’s a phenomenon in which one or more sensory pathways blend in the brain to create a new experience. Researchers aren’t sure how many people have synesthesia, but estimates range from 1 in 200 to 1 in 20 people. Elizabeth Schwartz is a freelance writer and music historian from Portland; Forest Mountain Lion is a musician from Eugene; and James Duckwell is a career and technical education teacher at Portland’s Roosevelt High School. They all join us to talk about their experiences with synesthesia, along with Mark Stewart, a professor of psychology at Willamette University who studies the phenomenon.

If we could taste colors, what would each color taste like? Sounds like a hypothetical question but this is exactly what happened to me recently! It was a Sunday morning, and I fried eggs for breakfast. But something was definitely wrong. I wasn't sure if it's eggs or me, though. Now, you've tried fried eggs, right? They normally taste like… eggs. But that time, along with the egg, I could also taste lemon, vanilla yogurt, and even some paper. Whatever was the reason, I decided I'd be okay with just a tea for that day. But as soon as tried it, I spat it out. What is that? Did I put a spoonful of black pepper there? I tried to eat some strawberries but, along with the normal strawberry taste, they had a taste of hot chili. Suddenly, I got a weird thought. Do I… taste colors? And then I remembered something I read in one article once. Synesthesia! According to the theory, signals from one sensory system may end up in another system. For example, when a person can see the color of music or feel the smell of words. Something similar happens to newborn babies. And something similar happened to me... This week on Hysteria 51, we dive headfirst into a tale of sweet treats and savage scissors—because of course we do.First, from the “Why? Just… why?” files: A Kentucky man allegedly broke into his brother's home and stabbed him in the testicles with scissors. That's not sibling rivalry—that's Game of Thrones: Dollar Store Edition. Conspiracy Bot approves so you know it's bad. Then things take a gentler turn (thankfully) with the news that listening to a certain song can actually make chocolate taste sweeter. Science finally did something we care about. Is it witchcraft? Synesthesia? A long-lost Willy Wonka track? It's nuts, it's nougat, it's a rollercoaster of the bizarre. This week, I talk with Cobie LaJeanne about her pitch-black thriller Blood in the Cradle. We dive into her inspiration for the story, how the book developed over time, and what it was like creating a detective with synesthesia!Blood in the Cradle SynopsisWhen decorated detective Chloe Van Belle receives a call about a severed limb in a fountain, she dreads returning to Encounters, a renowned angel-worshipping church tied to her dark childhood wounds. She's further shocked to learn six-year-old Lillian vanished [from the congregation] without being reported.Chloe's half-sister Rosie, a devout believer engaged to the reverend's son, remains unwavering that everything unfolds according to divine will, refusing to see the evil in front of her.An eerie search leads to Lillian's body tucked in a cradle with a vintage watch, linking the crime to a similar murder twenty years ago. The gruesome scene triggers Chloe's morbid fascination with death, making her visual-gustatory synesthesia, which gives murder a literal sweet taste, harder to hide. With Chloe's nightmares and half-memories resurfacing, she engages in a macabre game of cat and mouse with the killer. As casualties grow and evidence points to the highest levels of the church leadership, Chloe must protect Rosie and her team—but is it from a monster or herself? What if your next disagreement could actually bring you closer to someone instead of driving you apart? In this episode, we're diving into Conflict Resilience: Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In with co-authors Bob Bordone, a conflict resolution expert from Harvard, and Joe Salinas, a behavioral neurologist and founder of Isaac Health. Together with Yael, they have a down-to-earth conversation about what it really takes to stay present in conflict and why that matters for your relationships and your brain. You'll hear personal stories, surprising research, and powerful insights on why it's so important to get comfortable with discomfort, listen with an open heart, and know when (and how) to engage in tough conversations. Listen and Learn: What happens when a conflict avoider and a conflict expert team up to explore how tension builds connection? Why do two people experience the same conflict so differently, and how does your brain shape that story? Is conflict really worse today, or have we just lost the resilience to stay in the heat and handle it? Why avoiding conflict rewires your brain to fear it and building resilience means facing the heat, slowly. How sharing real stories across deep divides can reshape how we see “the other” and actually spark true change. Can deeper listening to those we disagree with reshape our brains, our beliefs, and maybe even our world? Why listening grows from curiosity to open space for real connection Knowing when to engage or exit conflict starts with curiosity and protects both peace and power Resources: Conflict Resilience: Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In: http://www.conflictresiliencebook.com Joel's website: https://joelsalinasmd.com/ Bob's website: https://www.bobbordone.com/about-me#:~:text=My%20Story,served%20as%20the%20Thaddeus%20R Yael's newsletter interview with the authors of You're Not as Crazy as I Thought (But You're Still Wrong)—on the topic of moving from “me versus you” to “us versus the problem” Additional Books Referenced in the Episode Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781250338143 The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9780393354775 Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9780525434955 The Klansman's Son: My Journey from White Nationalism to Antiracism: A Memoir: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781419764783 You're Not as Crazy as I Thought (But You're Still Wrong): https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781612344614 About Bob Bordone: Robert C. You'll hear personal stories, surprising research, and powerful insights on why it's so important to get comfortable with discomfort, listen with an open heart, and know when (and how) to engage in tough conversations.Listen and Learn: What happens when a conflict avoider and a conflict expert team up to explore how tension builds connection? My guest today is Heather Eck. Heather Eck is a multimedia abstract artist and writer. An intuitive artist and painter, Heather interprets people, places, and experiences through color, a condition known as synesthesia. Like an enormous box of crayons, her gift operates by categorizing through intricate but specific shades of color. While this condition enables her to experience color, she responds to these encounters with people, things, emotions, and spaces by understanding the particular shade of experience that a person dwells in. She uses her gift to detect the most healing color for them to remedy their wounds. Guided by the chakra system and inspired by spirituality and the mysteries of the universe, Heather transforms these vibrant energies into captivating paintings that uplift, inspire and, ultimately, heal. Each canvas becomes a symphony of color and emotion, a visual representation of the unseen connections that weave through our lives. Heather's work is more than art; it's a medium of healing, a testament to the profound influence of color on our well-being. In this episode we discuss synesthesia, art, intuition, healing, self-discovery and spirituality.Website - https://www.heathereck.comIG - https://www.instagram.com/heathereckartistFB - https://www.facebook.com/heathereckartistYouTube - www.youtube.com/@heathereckartist LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/heathereck/Special Show Offer - https://www.heathereck.com/thankyou In this episode you will learn:1. What synesthesia is and how it influences her creative process.2. Why it's important to let go of perfection and how embracing imperfection can lead to authenticity.3. How art can serve as a tool for empowerment and social change in the world. “There are two, I think, definitions of intuitive artists. One is some people, when they're painting a landscape or painting something representational, will plan out what it looks like and be methodical about that approach. Some intuitive artists, though, will approach a canvas without any plan at all and just let their intuition kind of guide them.” - 00:02:49“Synesthesia is kind of the easiest way to define it is when your senses get crossed in your brain. And so if I smell something in my mind, I see it as a color and a shape." 00:34:49“You are all beautiful and wonderful people. Don't let what anybody says about you prevent you from being your most authentic self. You are here to do incredible, wonderful, big things that you cannot even possibly imagine.” 00:49:19

What is synesthesia? Can you imagine a world where you can taste words, see numbers as colors, or hear sound as textures? This is how roughly 4% of the population experiences the world. And while we've known about this fascinating phenomenon for well over two hundred years, what exactly causes this unusual affliction still remains a mystery.I'm excited to explore this topic with you today. Synesthesia is an intriguing neurological condition where the cognitive pathways of the senses become intertwined. That cross-sensory stimulation offers a unique glimpse into the inner workings of the brain.Synesthesia is often associated with highly creative people in literature, music, and art. Their ability to experience the world differently allows for new and interesting ideas to emerge. Tonight, my special guest is Dr. Richard Cytowic who's here to discuss his years of research into an extrasensory phenomena that is truly mind-blowing! Get his book Synesthesia on Amazon. An accessible, concise primer on the neurological trait of synesthesia―vividly felt sensory couplings―by a founder of the field. One in twenty-three people carry the genes for the synesthesia. Not a disorder but a neurological trait―like perfect pitch―synesthesia creates vividly felt cross-sensory couplings. A synesthete might hear a voice and at the same time see it as a color or shape, taste its distinctive flavor, or feel it as a physical touch. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Richard Cytowic, the expert who returned synesthesia to mainstream science after decades of oblivion, offers a concise, accessible primer on this fascinating human experience. Cytowic explains that synesthesia's most frequent manifestation is seeing days of the week as colored, followed by sensing letters, numerals, and punctuation marks in different hues even when printed in black. Other manifestations include tasting food in shapes, seeing music in moving colors, and mapping numbers and other sequences spatially. One synesthete declares, “Chocolate smells pink and sparkly”; another invents a dish (chicken, vanilla ice cream, and orange juice concentrate) that tastes intensely blue. Cytowic, who in the 1980s revived scientific interest in synesthesia, sees it now understood as a spectrum, an umbrella term that covers five clusters of outwardly felt couplings that can occur via several pathways. Yet synesthetic or not, each brain uniquely filters what it perceives. Cytowic reminds us that each individual's perspective on the world is thoroughly subjective.Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio]
