A weird question I sometimes get is this: “I want to get into buying movies on disc, Sonny, but I don't know where to start.” I say it's weird because the answer seems obvious to me: just buy movies you like to watch! But there are issues I take for granted like formats and resolutions, so I thought it would be useful to talk to Aidan Ryan of the Boston Globe about his recent piece in that newspaper's magazine focused on the Gen Z/Young Millennial cohort that has gotten really into collecting movies on disc. From the dollar DVD bins to the high-quality UHD 4K collectors sets put out by the boutique labels, these younger collectors run the gamut. If you have questions of your own, feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them. And if you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend!

This week we take a look at the insane marketing monolith that is Barbenheimer, with Barbie having pulled in over a billion and Oppenheimer extending its run at IMAX; we commiserate the missed opportunity of a Ben Wheatley blockbuster with Meg 2, enjoy the Spider-Verse vibe of the surprisingly good Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem, and check out Gerard Butler's latest, Kandahar, coming straight to Amazon Prime as an Original; we review Jaws 2 on 4K, and the better-than-it-had-any-right-to-be Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves 4K release; we also look at a few TV shows which have come to an end - like Marvel's disappointing Secret Invasion - and a few that have come back - like Futurama.
When it comes to computers, getting the right one for your needs is essential. If you're a casual user, you don't want to spend a fortune just to browse the web and check your email. On the other hand, if you're a gamer or a content creator, you don't want to get an underpowered system that won't serve your purposes for even a week. Razer has got new entries in its Razer Blade laptop line that are perfect for those who are in need of a computer for gaming or content creation.New Razer BladesThe new line of Razer Blades offers some serious power under the hood. These laptops are certainly not for the casual user, as they come with specs that can rival a gaming desktop. First up, all versions of both models come with a 13th Gen Intel Core i9 HX processor. When it comes to laptops, that is the highest processor performance you can ask for. But, the processor is nothing for gaming, photo editing, or video editing, if the video card isn't able to keep up with it. That's why Razer has the newest GeForce RTX cards, with options up to and including the RTX 4090. Again, when it comes to performance in a laptop, you can't ask for more right now. Because of these card options, the company is able to put some serious screens on these machines. To complement the video cards, the laptops also include improved audio. Both models offer THX Spatial Audio, giving a more immersive sound experience. With full surround sound produced through the machines, gaming and video editing are better.Razer Blade 16The Razer Blade 16 is the first laptop to feature a dual-mode mini-LED display. Because of this technology, the laptop is able to produce a great color range and super fast refresh rates. In UHD+ mode (5K resolution, or a wider version of UHD/4K), the screen has a 120 Hz refresh, which is better than most laptops at HD. In FHD+ mode (which is 2220 x 1080 pixels, or a wider version of HD), the screen is able to perform at 240 Hz.The Razer Blade 16 models are currently available for pre-order starting at $3,599.99.Razer Blade 18The Razer Blade 18 features a QHD+ display (which is 2960 x 1440p, or a wider version of 1440p) with a native refresh rate of 240 Hz. With the higher resolution, wider display, and great refresh rate, gaming is going to be a lot better for both casual and competitive players. This one also has a focus on content creators with its webcam. While it smaller sibling offers an HD camera, the 18-inch models offer a 5 MP webcam. The Razer Blade 18 models are currently available for pre-order starting at $3,799.SummaryThe new generation of the Razer Blade laptops are available now for pre-order.

This week, Sonny talks to James White, the Head of Restoration at Arrow Films. On this episode, we dive into the tricky nature of rescuing older films and getting them ready for appreciation on Blu-ray and UHD 4K. What is the actual mechanical process of restoring a film like? Beyond getting elements like the original negatives, how does James work with directors and cinematographers to make sure the color timing is right? What's the deal with film grain? All that and more on this week's episode! By happy coincidence, Arrow happens to be having a sale right now. (I didn't plan this, I swear!) But if you're an American and own an out-of-region player, make sure to check out Arrow's site for some great deals; Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, pictured above, is just £8, as is Time Bandits, about which James had a very funny story toward the end of this week's pod. (Eight pounds is roughly eleven dollars at the moment, so it's a good deal.) If you don't have an out-of-region player, check out Diabolik DVD which has a bunch of their U.S. releases on sale now. Diabolik's Jesse Nelson was a guest on this here podcast, and his store is really wonderful; if you pick anything up (like the Blu-ray of Why Don't You Just Die, best described as Tarantino by way of Russia), tell him I sent you.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss the current trend of home video and gaming going from HD (720P, 1080P) to UHD (4K, 8K). According to analysis from Decision Data, Internet bandwidth in the United States is ranked 11th in the world. As the world economy shifts more to remote work, Internet speed is faster than ever, but is it enough to be able to stream huge amounts of data when watching movies or, even more challenging a task, games? When people think of consumer drones and multirotor copters, they almost certainly go directly to DJI. There is no name more synonymous with the product category, in fact, for both consumers and professionals. One of the reasons that DJI is so popular is the incredible stability of their cameras, care of a very sophisticated gyroscopic stabilizer. The stabilizer is so good at what it does, that the company has decided to bring it outside of the drone and into a new product, the Osmo Pocket. This new product is a small, handheld video camera is able to record in full UHD 4K resolution, at 60 frames per second. It can record for 140 minutes on a charge, all in an incredibly small body. But, where DJI really sets the Osmo Pocket apart from the crowded is by bringing their 3-axis gimbal to the camera. This single feature makes the camera incredibly attractive for all sorts of video creators. The most obvious usage is for amateur sports videography. Whether you're running up and down your kids' soccer pitch or filming your friends' newest skateboard trick, this is a great camera. It's because of the stabilization. You can literally run with the camera and the gimbal can keep the frame level and steady. All of this is made possible while still managing to pack everything into a single-handed design. The gimbal is mechanical but digitally controlled. This gives the camera the ability to do some great capabilities that you simply cannot get with a generic gimbal. For example, ActiveTrack, a feature which allows you to tap on a subject on the screen and the camera will continue to follow the subject as it moves, as well as while the camera moves. Again, this makes following a kid's soccer game or skateboarding video far easier to film. The DJI Osmo Pocket is available now for $349, and can be found in accessory bundles, as well.Interview by Daniele Mendez of The New Product Launchpad.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. On this episode #9 “We Shoot Mirrorless” podcast episode for December 2017, Marco invited guest co-host Joseph Linaschke, also known as PhotoJoseph on social media, to discuss these new products and mirrorless topics: This show is sponsored by: COSYSPEED and PhotoShelter Joseph introduces himself and shares why and when he switched to mirrorless cameras for his professional work. Panasonic announced a new camera. The LUMIX DC G9 has the latest 20.3 MPix m4/3 sensor (same as GH5 but tweaked and improved jpg image processing quality. It shoots up to 20 fps with continuous AF and its 5-axis sensor stabilization reduces shake up to 6.5 stops (it supports Dual IS, too). It has 225 AF points and an AF point selector joystick. The EVF has a huge magnification of 0.83x OLED EVF with 3.68 Mio dots next to a 3” fully articulating tilt-screen. Images can be stored on two UHS-II SD card slots. And connectivity options include HDMI, Mic, Headphone, Flash Sync, USB3, wired remote and WiFi 802.11ac standard. It shoots video in UHD 4K 60fps using the full sensor without an extra video crop. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2AYk4hr Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2yKV9rM Joseph also explained how the Panasonic LUMIX G9 compares to the LUMIX GH-5. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2yL4no4 Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2k5LUhw And they talked about some of the other cameras from the Panasonic LUMIX lineup like the G7: B&H https://bhpho.to/2yL3rjz Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2BzTAmg G85: B&H https://bhpho.to/2AYRJI6 Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2ziSitN GX85: B&H https://bhpho.to/2yKLEZX Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2owB5Kb Panasonic also announced the Leica DG Elmarit 200mm f2.8 OIS Tele Prime lens with a 400mm equivalent FOV in 35mm terms. It supports Dual IS and has 3 linear motors for speed. There is also a 1.4 TC available to boost the range up to a 560mm FOV in 35mm terms. The lens is also freeze proof and weather sealed B&H: https://bhpho.to/2AZDfaT Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2yMLAZG Leica announced the compact CL camera. It’s and L-mount camera with a 24 MPix APS-C sensor. And compared to the Leica TL2, which heavily relies on a touchscreen menu control operation, the Leica CL is a bit more conventional with two exposure dials, a 4 way-controller and a few physical buttons. The CL also has a built-in EVF with 2.36 Mio dots (this has to be purchased as an extra attachment for the TL) and it has a small “current settings” LCD on top next to the shutter release. The rear LCD is also touch sensitive. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2AYmKeZ Leica also released the Noctilux-M 75mm f1.25 ASPH lens. This lens will offer a very shallow depth of field and should produce an amazing bokeh. The Minimum focus distance is 85cm or 3 ft, but the weight of approximately 1kg or 2.3 pounds is quite massive. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2yKT5jN Sigma introduced the new 16mm f1.4 DC DN lens that will be shipping now for Sony APS-C (classic 24mm FOV with f1.4) and m4/3 cameras (32mm FOV equivalent). It has a stepping motor for fast and silent AF that should work well for still as well as video work. It’s dust and splash proof and has 9 rounded aperture blades for a circular bokeh wide open. The lens is also treated with an advanced lens coating to minimize flare and ghosting. The lens weighs 405g or 14.3 oz B&H: https://bhpho.to/2yM5vrD Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2yM994B Fujifilm updated the FW for many interchangeable lens cameras in the past month. The biggest upgrade came to the X-T2 with FW upgrade 3.0. The biggest improvement was made to the AF tracking algorithm for moving subjects. According to Fuji, it enhances the AF-C to track subjects twice as fast as previous FW as well as the ability to track moving objects up to 50% smaller than before. The FW also ads the ability to use “Fujifilm X Raw Studio”, improves radio flash controller usability, ads RGB histogram highlight warnings, and fixes a problem in Auto ISO setting with exposure compensation set to C. Fuji’s FW site: http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/fw_table.html This is the link to Joseph’s Panasonic LUMIX and GH5 training that he mentioned on the show: http://GH5Training.com Mirrorless question of the month: Hello Scott and Marco, I have a question for Marco. I'm in process of selling my Nikon D300s camera (way to heavy for my age and use) with the intention to get a Fujifilm X-T2. I plan to get the EF-x500 flash too, primarily for fill light for indoor shooting. However, I have read that this flash does not work well and it dies after a few uses (poor manufacturing or design flaw..!) the word is the OEM manufacturer "Nissin Digital i60A" flash does a much better job. I know from the podcast that you don't use flash much. But I wanted to know your understanding/recommendation on to which flash to get - the Fujifilm EF-x500 or Nissin Digital i60A or a different one? I'll appreciate any advice. Now the biggie, Ultra HD or 4K TVs. Fred gets into it all: what's changed, what is 4K resolution, what is HDR exactly, and why should we all care. He also adds tips to look for when buying a TV and most importantly, what the new consoles (and PCs) are doing with 4K and HDR. Note: Already a correction. Rise of the Tomb Raider does not currently support HDR on either Xbox One or PC, however Crystal Dynamics has claimed a patch is in the works. As far as I can tell no games on PC support HDR at this time and NBA2K17, releasing Friday, Sept. 16th, will be the first game to support HDR on XB1 and PS4 thanks to a day one patch. We still won't know how true that is until it releases.
Title: 4K Ultra High Definition Television Introduction High definition has meant 1080p (1,920 by 1,080) resolution for years now, and it's ready for an upgrade. That's where 4K, also called ultra high-definition, or UHD, television comes in. 4K is finally a mature, accessible technology. In this podcast we take a close look at UHD 4K technology referencing a PC Magazine post. I had two goals with this podcast: 1. Have a one-on-one conversation with Charles Poynton about the future of display technology as we evolve from mastering HD to UHD, 4k and even 8k media. 2. Understand where display calibration technology stands with mastering displays (LCD and OLED in particular) and what is state of the art with calibration software. A point I wanted to bring out was that mastering displays for high-end productions will always need calibration tools for mastering purposes, but how can a growing market of digital creatives leverage these tools to bring their iMacs and personal computers into close compliance with Rec.709 and and newer standards using ICC profiles? The amount of content this community is mastering is huge, so can they use the same calibration tools? From our conversation it was clear that Charles has a great deal to say about displays and display technologies because he's been an instigator of many display standards since the 1980s. Charles really pours on the insights in this interview, so I'm delighted to be passing this along to my community of listeners. I have included a transcript of the interview at www.tomparish.com
