Whatever type of music you love, Rick Rubin has probably left his mark on it. Rubin, a founder of Def Jam Recordings and a former co-chairman of Columbia Records, might be the most influential music producer alive. A very partial roll call of the artists he's worked with: Johnny Cash, Jay-Z, Run-DMC, Eminem, Beastie Boys, Slayer, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West, Neil Diamond, Brandi Carlile and Adele. We recorded this in 2023, after Rubin released a fascinating, unusual book, “The Creative Act: A Way of Being.” I'd expected stories of late-night sessions with famous musicians, but instead it read like a spiritual tract. Rubin was offering a guide to how to cultivate the mind states that lead to real creativity. And that's what this conversation was about, too: how to open yourself up more to the world, and learn to trust your own taste. Rubin's advice feels more relevant with each passing year, as technology gets ever better at hacking our attention and the world fills with A.I. slop. So I wanted to share this episode again. Episode 111: Hit-Boy is one of the biggest producers in modern day music. He's produced some of the biggest songs for Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Drake, Travis Scott, Big Sean and Nipsey Hussle. He's a 3x Grammy winner. He gave Jay-Z the first diamond record of his career, off a beat that six artists turned down before it ever got to him. This Hit-Boy interview is different than the others he's done. We go deep into the craft, how the beats actually get made, cut, released, and paid! Why he's numbered every single beat he's made since 2006, and what happened to the 1,600 nobody picked. We got into all of it. Making "Backseat Freestyle" for Ciara before Kendrick ever heard it. Producing a #1 country record for Beyoncé. Being flat broke in 2017 with a future #1 already sitting on his hard drive. Getting free after 18 years and putting his new album out himself, on his own site, with no label and no DSPs. He also still makes everything in FL Studio, the same program he started on at 15 years old in Fontana, California. He's one of the most important producers of the last 15 years and he's still working like he has something to prove. His biggest days are still ahead of him. This one's for anybody who makes music in the modern world, especially hip hop and pop. I hope you enjoy my interview with the legendary, Hit-Boy! Huge thanks to our friends at DistroKid! Travis and Eric break down Tom Brady's growing post-football business empire, focusing on his investment in Card Vault, a sports trading card and authenticated memorabilia retailer. The company has expanded rapidly since Brady acquired a 50% stake in 2025 and now counts major names including Jay-Z, Aaron Judge, Dana White, and other investors among its backers. Travis and Eric discuss the economics of physical retail, the resurgence of collectibles, the role of social media and live card breaking, and whether Card Vault's aggressive expansion is a smart long-term bet—or a potential bubble. On this episode we talk about: Tom Brady's investment in Card Vault and his growing business empire after football Why Jay-Z, Aaron Judge, Dana White, and other major investors are backing the trading card company The resurgence of sports cards, Pokémon, and other collectibles The risks and opportunities of rapidly expanding a physical retail business Why live card breaking, influencers, and e-commerce could be more important than physical stores Whether the current trading card boom is sustainable or another collectible bubble How celebrity credibility and social media can create an entirely new business model around collectibles Top 3 Takeaways Don't confuse brand visibility with business fundamentals. Card Vault has grown revenue by more than 400% and plans to expand to roughly 24 stores by the end of the year, but Travis questions whether the economics of rapidly opening expensive physical locations can support that growth over the long term. Physical locations may be the anchor, not the engine. Travis argues that the real opportunity could be online commerce, live card breaking, and the media surrounding collectibles, with physical stores serving as brand-building destinations rather than the primary source of sales. Be careful making decisions based only on what you personally understand. Eric points out that his own lack of interest in mystery products and collectible cards doesn't necessarily mean there isn't a massive market for them. Consumer businesses can look strange from the outside while still having strong demand—and that's exactly why understanding the market matters. Notable Quotes "The thing that ties it all together is social media and the internet." "You shouldn't make decisions based on just only what you know." "There's always a tipping point where you get to a certain number of locations and then the brand reinforcement that you gain from having that many locations open ensures the success of the brand to a certain extent." The criticism surrounding her missed layups has become bigger than basketball. Yes, she needs to improve her finishing, but reducing a player's entire impact to one weakness ignores rebounding, passing, defense, physicality and everything else that affects winning. Then the conversation turns to Stephen A. Smith and the NABJ. If protecting Black women is the standard, should that standard extend beyond political commentary and include how women are treated throughout sports, entertainment, business and media? From there, Sauce discusses Jay-Z and Charlamagne Tha God, protecting hip-hop's cultural icons, and why successful Black figures often become targets as their influence grows. Then we switch gears.Men: it's time to level up.Grooming. Fitness. Diet. Confidence. Relationships. Taking care of yourself. Appreciating a good woman. Removing negative people from your circle. Jay-Z says he's a business, man. He sold out Yankee Stadium for three nights, and used the stage to answer everyone calling him a sellout. The billionaire released the 30th-anniversary edition of his debut album about hustling his way to independence as a Target exclusive in the middle of a boycott many Black organizers say never ended. We dig into how this is what Jay-Z has been selling his whole career -- it's how Black excellence and Black capitalism get fed to us as the same thing.Support public media with NPR+ and enjoy perks for over 25 podcasts like this one. There are certain moments when you realize the world you knew is gone forever. Your childhood home gets cleaned out. The cars you remember disappear. Your favorite mascot gets replaced. And, most devastating of all, 7UP decides it needs to become more lime-forward.We know. Take all the time you need.Episode 83 starts with some actual show business as the crew talks about trying to land a role — or at least get their faces somewhere in the background — in Sheriff Justice: The Series. There's also some movie talk surrounding Scott's short-film adventures before we arrive at the cultural earthquake nobody was prepared for: 7UP is changing its recipe. For the first time in 15 years, the lemon-lime soda is going lime-lemon.That announcement sends this comedy podcast directly into nostalgia mode as Rafe and Moon remember the glory days of 7UP's Uncola marketing, old-school glasses and, most importantly, Cool Spot. Remember Cool Spot? The red dot with sunglasses, sneakers and enough '90s attitude to somehow get his own Sega Genesis game? THAT was branding. Naturally, the conversation becomes a referendum on every mascot decision 7UP has made since, including poor Fido Dido catching strays decades after the fact. The trip down memory lane keeps rolling when the crew talks about cars disappearing from the market, including the Ford Escape, Jaguar F-Pace, Toyota GR Supra and Tesla Model S. That somehow brings Smart cars back into the conversation, which reminds everybody of that brief period when society tried to convince us driving something the size of a roller skate was the future. Then we Crap on Celebrities.Matthew McConaughey tells a story about using his Wedding Planner connection to Jennifer Lopez to help get himself out of a sticky traffic-stop situation in Mexico. Which raises an important question: if Matthew McConaughey still has to name-drop somebody else, what hope do the rest of us have? There's Barbie sequel drama involving Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig and some potentially enormous paydays. Kelly Ripa talks about needing gum-graft surgery. Selena Gomez and her Wondermind company face allegations in a lawsuit. Spider-Man is putting up gigantic box-office numbers, and the crew dives into a list of movies people online have branded some of the most boring films of the century. Then Anne Hathaway floats the idea that movies where dogs die should automatically get an R rating.Honestly, Old Yeller has been emotionally mugging children for generations, so at least somebody finally opened the investigation. We also get into the return of Ted Lasso, Axl Rose dealing with jaw problems while performing, and Lionel Richie cracking a joke about Usher and Chris Brown that predictably becomes an online debate. Because nothing said into a microphone is allowed to simply be a joke anymore. It must immediately become a panel discussion involving 40,000 strangers. But the centerpiece of the celebrity chaos is a game that deserves its own home edition: Good Tipper or Bad Tipper? The crew works through anecdotal stories involving John Cena, Chuck Norris, David Lee Roth, Dave Chappelle, Scottie Pippen, Shaq, Maria Shriver, 50 Cent, Stanley Tucci, Post Malone, Miley Cyrus, Bruce Willis, Elvis Presley, Jay-Z, Tina Fey, Jennifer Lopez, Kevin Hart, Jane Fonda and Jack Black. Some allegedly tipped huge. Some allegedly tipped terribly. Some stories immediately make the crew question humanity. And Scottie Pippen inspires a nickname so painfully obvious that humanity should be ashamed it took this long: No Tippin' Pippen.Again, these are anecdotes discussed during the show, not our personal surveillance operation into celebrities paying restaurant checks. We barely have enough resources to monitor our own lunch orders. The episode wraps with celebrity birthdays, Steve Martin age guesses, Reginald VelJohnson's incredible history of playing cops and the usual collection of references that make this comedy podcast feel less like a structured entertainment program and more like being trapped at a table with friends who remember every useless cultural detail except why they originally started talking. So pour yourself a 7UP — lemon-lime or the terrifying new lime-lemon variety — tip your server, fire up the Sega Genesis and enjoy another comedy podcast from The Rizzuto Show.Cool Spot, wherever you are: we remember you.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
