The podcast, now supported by the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, features candid conversations with students, educators, and community leaders—tackling mental health from every angle. WDIY Lehigh Valley Health Network Wind Creek Event Center Michael Bernadyn of RE/MAX Real Estate Molly’s Irish Grille & Sports Pub Banko Beverage Company Episode Recap Teen Voices, Real Conversations: Inside YANA LV on WDIY “You are not alone.” It's more than a title—it's the foundation of YANA LV, the student-led mental health show created by Moravian Academy seniors Brannagh Breslin and Diya Sharma. Their journey began in the summer before junior year with a few iPhone recordings and an idea. “We decided to start this podcast because we both had interest in mental health,” Diya says. “Our stories individually were so different, but they overlapped with the idea of mental health and giving it to a bigger audience.” Mental Health Is Personal The show is rooted in lived experience. “For example, if a girl is smiling to the world, happy, seems like the most bubbly person in the world—it's not true,” Diya says. “She might be dealing with the most deepest things herself, and she's afraid to tell other people.” “And that's another reason we started this podcast,” she adds. “Because the idea of You Are Not Alone means that we're a community, and we're going to support one another.” From Voice Memos to Broadcast Airwaves At first, the show was as DIY as it gets. “We would just record on our phones,” Diya recalls. “Obviously it’s not as great editing as we have here at the studio, but it was a start.” They cold-emailed professors and local figures to ask about everything from ADHD to the psychological impact of injury and trauma. “Sometimes we would have to send five emails to five different people just to get one episode,” Brannagh says. Eventually, with encouragement from a teacher and a few inspiring guests, they were connected with WDIY's Youth Media Program. “I brought my dad into the studio,” Brannagh says. “I was so excited about it. It feels so professional.” Standout Guests, Lasting Impact Two moments stood out from their time on the show. “David Robertson… he came on to talk about Joshua Tree,” Brannagh says. “It's for his little brother, who unfortunately passed away due to addiction… and he turned it into such a positive thing.” Their very first WDIY episode also left a mark. “His name is Herman,” Diya says. “He's an anesthesiologist and he has a prosthetic leg. The way he spoke and the things that he said were very inspirational.” What They've Learned “Even though situations aren't exactly the same,” Brannagh says, “we're still bringing attention to talking about the things that we go through.” Diya adds: “Everyone has physical health—and I think everyone has mental health, whether they recognize it or not. I think just normalizing that and talking about it is the first big step.” What's Next? Brannagh is heading to NYU to study liberal studies and political science or psychology before law school. Diya will attend UVA to study biology and pursue a career in medicine. But they're not finished with YANA LV. “Obviously, we can't come here and record at the studio,” Brannagh says, “but we'll keep YANA alive.” Follow LVwithLOVE on Substack

That simple observation was the catalyst that launched her vision of replacing everyday products with plant-based, compostable alternatives. Join us as we dive into: The “Aha” Moment: How one trip to an ice cream shop sparked Lisa's vision for sustainable packaging, inspiring her to explore compostable options to replace single-use containers. Product Offerings Galore: From bamboo-lined coffee cups to compostable party packs, Lisa shares the wide range of eco-friendly options she's bringing to local restaurants, coffee shops, and even home entertainers. This week, we recorded live at Godfrey Daniels with the Managing Director, Ramona Labarre. Ramona is a Texas native who came to Bethlehem in 1985. Looking for music on the left end of the dial, she found Hep Cat's Holiday - hosted by Dave Fry - on WMUH radio, where she heard that Nanci Griffith would be performing at a place called Godfrey Daniels. She remembers finding and walking into the club one evening to buy tickets. Nanci Griffith at Godfrey's: an intimate concert with only about 30 in attendance. Needless to say, she caught the magic that night. She answered the call to start volunteering. It didn't take long to figure out that she could be part of a group of like-minded folks who helped bring live music to the masses. She was soon enlisted to help behind the scenes. By 1990, she was invited to join the board. In the late 1990s, she joined the conference staff for the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance and International Folk Alliance for 10 years, an important nexus for folk artists, venues, radio, festivals, press and record companies, and others. In 2010, she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission, due no doubt to her volunteer time with Godfrey's, and her years (2003-2009) with the Celtic Cultural Alliance (Celtic Classic festival). At CCA, she was public relations; bookkeeper; volunteer coordinator; festival finance director. The Lehigh Valley music scene is truly a large, generous and open hearted community - very much like a family. The people who I count as my best friends today, she met at Godfrey's or thru herwork at Godfrey's.Godfrey's partners with several area arts organizations: WDIY; Touchstone Theatre; Celtic Classic; ArtsQuest/MusikFest. The LV Charter High School for the Performing Arts. Godfrey Daniels has been recognized by the LV Music Awards. Godfrey's is supported financially by a strong membership program; and local foundations such as Martin Guitar Foundation; also the PCA.

The Jawnstowne Standard may be one of the Lehigh Valley’s newest punk bands, but the four members all have long histories playing loud and raucous DIY music. After the break-up of Valley punk band Twin 55, Bruce, Brock, and Matt regrouped under the banner As Years Pass, whose name they would eventually change to the Jawnstowne Standard in 2019 with the addition of former Road Sodas drummer A.C.. The Jawnstowne Standard delivers an earnest style of straightforward, melodic punk rock whose songs deal with “real life, real situations, the good times, and the bad times,” according to the band’s bio. The Jawnstowne Standard released their debut EP 'Punxsutawney' in October 2019, recorded by Matt Molchany at Shards. Why Spotify's Shows With Music Is A Big Deal Beyond Podcasting [S3E48]

Podcast Pontifications

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2020 10:00

Recently, Spotify removed a seemingly unmovable object that some say has plagued podcasting since the beginning of podcasting: music licensing. From the start, podcasters have wanted to play licensed commercial music - the songs you hear on the radio or have in your personal music library - on their shows. But that has been verboten thanks to the complexity of music licensing rights and hefty fines for copyright violation. Spotify made all of those troubles go away. Leaving aside the fact that Spotify somehow managed to find a term that’s less sexy than podcasting, some new “shows with music” are available in Spotify’s app right now. I listened to all of the currently available shows with music last night and I quite enjoyed the experience! Some appealed to me more than others, but all of them were great. More importantly (to Spotify and the conceit of this article): All of those shows with music were examples of excellent content. Content that I cannot get anywhere else. This is the first spinoff from podcasting that I can think of that’s demonstrably something different. Sure, we’ve seen lots of efforts tangentially related to podcasting, but none of them have really gained any traction with either creators or listeners on a big scale. I’m taking a risk betting on the success of a public announcement that’s less than 24-hours old and has a whopping seven shows showcased, but I think we’re in Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok territory here.  I think more people want to be DJs than want to be talk show hosts. And people listen to WAY more music than they do spoken word, and Spotify is betting that many of them will want to curate their favorite music content on a regular basis, sharing their tastes with the world. And I’m confident Spotify is right in this assumption.  Spotify’s shows with music will be an influencer magnet. Spotify’s shows with music will allow for a much easier path to monetization, fame, and everything else influencers crave. As influencers flock - and yes, I truly believe they will flock - to this new offering, the appeal of “hey, I should start my own podcast” will switch to “hey, I should start my own show with music”. Anchor will push new users in this direction, as it’s beneficial for everyone involved - from show creator to music rights holder to Spotify - when Anchor makes it easy to become a real influencer on their platform and within Spotify. And as the real influencers go, so do the would-be influencers, hopefully abandoning (and removing from podcasting directories) their half-baked efforts at podcasting in the process. I desperately want my good friend and https://twitter.com/msinformation (beautiful human being, Donna Mugavero) to make a show with music much like she does when she occasionally hosts a mid-day radio program filled with her eclectic music choices on her local NPR-affiliate, https://www.wdiy.org/ (WDIY). And I want her next-door neighbor and podcaster http://www.geologicpodcast.com/ (George Hrab of The Geologic Podcast.) George to make a Spotify-only version of his 13 Songs live video series, this time with the official music track presented along with all of Geo’s deep gushing of musical knowledge setting up each and providing commentary in between. That would be so fantastic. Here’s the best news to those who don’t care about shows with music: Spotify’s’ shows with music have no negative implications for working podcasters like you and me. There are, however, many positive implications. Some (many?) podcasters will find great benefit by having a Spotify show with music to accompany their podcast, much in the same way that many podcasters find benefit in having Instagram, Snapchat, and Tiktok accounts.  As a reminder, Evo’s long winter’s nap starts in a few weeks, with no new episodes during November and December. Well… no new episodes from me. I am allowing others to do their own pontificating right here during my absence. If that sounds like... Support this podcast

In Act 3, scene 4 of Othello, Othello tells Desdemona that the handkerchief he gave her was “dyed in mummy.” What does that mean? According to Lafayette College’s Ian Smith, it means the handkerchief was dyed black. In this episode, originally broadcast in June 2016, we talk to Smith and Ayanna Thompson about Elizabethan modes of blackface—which included covering a performer’s body with dyed cloth to simulate blackness—and how Smith’s insight changes how we understand Othello.
