Today we're sharing our (sometimes controversial) opinions about some of the buzziest books of LAST summer. We love it when our reading overlaps off the podcast and gives us a chance to come together for some off-the-cuff book conversation. Of the slew of buzzy books that released in Summer 2022, there were a handful both of us somehow made time to read. We're deep diving into five of those books, sharing what worked for us, what didn't, and why we can love a reading experience even when we don't love a book. This episode originally aired on our Patreon bonus feed. To hear all about the buzzy books we read THIS summer, sign up to join Classics Club at patreon.com/novelpairings. We would love to see you in our community this semester! “I never thought I would be writing something where there would be a lot of intricate feelings around the game engine. But then if you think about something like say, like Sally Rooney's Normal People, who would think that you could feel so much passion over whether like, they go to that dance together, you know?” Gabrielle Zevin's delightful new novel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is part love story, part coming of age and entirely unforgettable—which is why it's our July B&N Book Club pick. Gabrielle joins us on the show for a spoiler-free conversation about her latest book, from the parallels between writing novels and video games, to Shakespeare and Emily Dickinson, money and class, creativity, friendship and much more with Poured Over's host, Miwa Messer. And we end this episode with TBR Topoff book recommendations from Marc and Becky. Featured Books (episode) Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton Featured Books (TBR Topoff) The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Poured Over is produced and hosted by Miwa Messer and mixed by Harry Liang. Once again we have our favorite local bookseller, Sam Miller, of Carmichaels Books in Louisville KY on the show to talk about summer reads. She is like our in house book seller who joins us every summer and winter to tell us what is new and notable in bookstores. Not all of these books are the typical fluffy summer books about the beach and booze; we have her cover all genres—sci/fi, cookbooks, local authors, YA, and literary fiction. We always enjoy when Sam visits us. And this week besides us, she also got to visit with resident cat Miso who was spreading the love around in the studio while we were recording. www.carmichaelsbookstore.com Follow us -Facebook at The Perks of Being a Book Lover - Instagram at @perksofbeingabookoverpod - For show notes for any episode, go to our website at perksofbeingabooklover.com. Surprise book nerds! We are back to share what is typically a Patron only episode - our overflow episode that we produce each month. These episodes are the reviews of the other books we read for a month that we didn't get to in our main monthly wrap up. We like to stick with 30ish minutes for our main show episode so any books we didn't get a chance to talk about, they go into these Overflow episodes. Today, we wanted to bring you this fun bonus so that you could get a feel for what the episodes are like. PLUS, we'd love to encourage you to become a patron of our show. Being a patron for our show is so important to us. It helps us to financially produce the show - spoiler, running a podcast is not cheap - it helps us to keep it ad free for you because no one likes being interrupted when you're talking about books, and it just shows us that you really love what we're doing. It's just $5 per month and helps us out more than we can say. You can join us by going to: patreon.com/readingthroughlifepod or by visiting our website readingthroughlifepod.com Here's a look at the other books we're reviewing in this episode: The Poetry of Pablo Neruda by Ilan Stavans Finding Cinderella by Colleen Hoover In the Name of Jesus by Henri Nouwen I Dare You by Misti Murphy The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison Like a House on Fire by Lauren McBrayer The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren Smile and Look Pretty by Amanda Pellegrino I Hope This Finds You Well by Kate Baer In a New York Minute by Kate Spencer We hope you enjoy this bonus episode and we can't wait to see you hanging out in our Patron community.

I am in a book club with some friends where half of them fall under the conservative Republican camp while the other half fall under the liberal Democrat camp (like me). As someone who believes in climate change, women’s rights and the need for radical change in systemic racism, I really want to suggest a book that this whole group can read together and that will help shift the mindset of the more conservative members. I am not trying to force them into becoming liberals. I am looking for them to be more open to the possibility of climate change and that racism not only happens at an individual level, but on a systemic one. (Note, we are a group of Asian-American women, so we are POC but our political views range widely.) To have them be more receptive to my book suggestion, I am looking for books that won’t turn them off or are too out of their comfort zone (i.e., Hood Feminism, Stamped from the Beginning, etc.). So, I’m thinking of fiction books that are compelling but not too serious. Hoping these books will allow them to really empathize with characters that live beyond their world and/or imagine a world where Fox News isn’t the only source of truth. For reference, past books we’ve read include Little Fires Everywhere and Miracle Creek. We are currently reading Dear Girls by Ali Wong. As you can see, we don’t read any controversial books and generally like popular fiction. I’m pretty stuck on what to choose, so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much, -Helen 2. So about a year and a half ago I moved to a new city. I’ve always considered myself a decently social and outgoing person, but since I moved I’ve struggled with some social anxiety. I think the continuous meeting of new people and re-figuring out how to connect with new people was very overwhelming, and at times I’ve felt like I was failing. I’m looking for a book where I can connect to the characters or writers on the basis of social anxiety. I’m imagining connecting to the main character and watching them grow/overcome their anxiety throughout the novel. Although I prefer fiction, I’m open to anything. Thanks! -Emily 3. So this is an oddly specific request. I just finished The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides and was just enthralled the whole way through. I loved what the New Yorker called the characters’ “intellectual angst” and was entranced with the unique, complex relationships between these three characters. Looking for read a-likes that feel the same as this one. In other words books that involve urban intellectuals in their twenties figuring out life and love and intimacy, where the relationships and dynamics are almost a character within themselves and maybe the whole plot (haha). I also liked how this novel and the relationships in it were very nuanced, not your standard cheesy romance. Other books I’ve enjoyed that scratch this same itch are Normal People, Conversations With Friends, The Idiot (Elif Batuman) and One Day. Thanks! -Emily 4. I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but things are kind of terrible right now. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve become interested in the lives of everyday people during ongoing difficult times in history, such as the Blitz in England, the troubles in Northern Ireland, and other places and times throughout history. I’m looking for a book to recommend for my book club that addresses this. Due to the nature of my question, I won’t ask for something that isn’t scary, but none of us is a fan of gore or children and animals in danger. Fiction or nonfiction are both welcome. Also, let me be the millionth person to thank you for bringing Red, White, and Royal Blue into my life! I’m a DC local and it is exactly what I needed. I like remembering my city as it was before the MAGAs arrived. -Rebecca 5. I absolutely love gothic thrillers that involve secretly badass women. Favorites include We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson , Rebecca By Daphne du Maurier and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I’m looking to find more books in this genre as we enter Halloween season! I prefer writing that is literary, but accessible. The book can be contemporary as long as it has some kind of gothic feel to it. Bonus points if it features a creepy old house! -Kate 6. Love the show! My sister and I are both really into YA fantasy, but we’ve been looking for some lighter reads in the genre and have come up pretty empty. It seems as if every YA fantasy book deals with heavy subjects, and are dark and intense. Romance is a must, but doesn’t have to be the main storyline. Thanks! -Liza 7. Hi Jen and Amanda, I am in a reading funk and I am looking for cozy, fun reads that are dramatic but nothing really awful happens. Something Harry Potter reminiscent would be great. Magic, fantastical elements, maybe even royalty, without the Game of Thrones gore. I also loved Storied Life of AJ Fikry, so something about books or love of books might be fun. I'm writing because my brother is a 22 year old Marine, and we've recently had a number of fights about race/gender/social justice. Basically, I think he doesn't believe that racism is really real, and he also believes a lot of wild evolutionary psychology stuff about the differences between men and women. I'm a queer white cis woman in a relationship with a woman of color and he thinks all of my political beliefs are too radical to take seriously, so I'm looking for a book that might get through to him. I'm sick of these conversations, but I don't want to give up without making some reading recommendations, so I want to send him a book for Christmas. In an ideal world I could give him The New Jim Crow, or any number of incredible works of feminist theory, but he definitely won't read them. He's not a huge reader, but he's been working his way through the Commandant's Professional Reading List https://grc-usmcu.libguides.com/usmc-reading-list (recommended readings for Marines) and recently mentioned that he was enjoying "Principles" by Ray Dalio? I think he's kind of into self-improvement stuff. Maybe needless to say, I'm at a loss. Some possible criteria: - nonfiction is probably preferable, and it would be great if it had some kind of military connection. - I hate saying this, but should be by an author with some kind of credentials that resonate with him (e.g. someone who isn't a vocal radical feminist). I know this is a broad question, but I'm really struggling, so any recs would be super appreciated. Thanks so much, --Caroline 2. I am looking for a good book for my stepmom to give for Christmas. Since I only see her once a year for Christmas, I only know two things about her: she’s Jewish and is a hippie. Can you guys recommend a book that has those two things? Thanks! --Josh 3. Hey! I love your podcast and have discovered so many great books because of it! I'm between jobs at the moment and have been considered a career switch. I'm looking for any book recommendations that have a similar situation in them - something that could maybe inspire me, make me laugh or just feel better in general. I don't usually read memoirs and would prefer fiction recommendations! Thanks, --Nikhila 4. I have recently finished watching the TV show Justified and I LOVED it. I have also read and loved a few YA books lately that I think could be called westerns: Devils Unto Dust by Emma Berquist; Vengeance Road and Retribution Rails by Erin Bowman. I am really craving a book that gives me what I loved from the Justified television show (moral grey areas; complicated relationships; prickly characters; law enforcement vs criminals, with people you root for on both sides of the law; sharp, witty dialogue), preferably with a female main character and a Western feel. And I am not big on romance so if there is little to none of that, even better! I do not have a preference between YA or adult, and I also don't have a preference between present day/contemporary setting or historical. I am fine with violence in books. Since the TV show Justified is based on an Elmore Leonard short story about the character Raylan Givens, I read one of Leonard’s books featuring Raylan Givens (Pronto), but it didn't scratch that itch. Thank you and I am very excited to hear any recommendations! --Anon 5. Help! I was just listening to the most recent Get Booked and question 1 was about a woman going through a painful and complicated separation needing a sweet, hopeful love story. I am, unfortunately, in the exact same situation. I, personally, do not enjoy Kate Morton’s books or historical fiction as a rule or witches, really for that matter. Do you have any other recommendations for this request? I’ve never read a romance novel but am open to trying one. I recently read One Day in December and that is just the kind of book I’m looking for, I think. Thanks for participating in my quest for happiness again :) --Julie 6. Hi there! I love the show, but this is my first time writing in. I am looking for some non-fiction recs for my boyfriend. He typically reads sci-fi, fantasy, and thrillers, but recently commented how he doesn't know much about non-fiction and has always found them rather dry. He loves Murakami, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, etc., so I'm looking for non-fiction books that read more in that flavor. I recently gave him Martha Wells' Murderbot book 1 and he loved that. He's interested in food, and distilling, and psychology, so those topics might be helpful. Thank you so much!!! --Cassidy 7. Hello! I've been filling out my "to read" list, and I'm at a loss for books to fill a certain category that I've been craving. What I'm really looking for are books about platonic relationships that are as strong as most romances are written. I'm not opposed to a good romance, but I'd like a few suggestions where romantic love is not the focus, and instead the plot centers around found-family friendships and best-friend-as-soulmate stories. Any suggestions for me? I am looking for a book to put me in a better mood. This Christmas will mark the one year anniversary of my sisters death, the doctors don’t expect my dad to make it to New Years, and I told a boy I loved him only to have him totally ghost on me. Also I bought a house and my best friend roommate is a great friend and a less great roommate. I read all the time. But I am stumped on what might cheer me up. I’m a pretty dedicated listener to all the book riot podcasts so if you recommend already and I thought I’d like it, I’ve probably already read it (ie Queen of the Night/ Sorcerer to the Crown). I like a lot of things, but mostly fantasy/ magical realism. Really into the American And French Revolution. (I already have Little on my TBR) Favorite authors include Neil Gaiman, Alice Hoffman, nk jemisin, Kelly Link and Cathryn Valente. Also true crime. Sci fi if it’s in the vein of Becky Chambers and Douglas Adams. I am obsessed with the Night Circus. I love Buffy and doctor who and game of thrones. Nothing with sad old people, surprise brain cancer (ie Storied life of AJ Fikry) or quirky beta males. I read ya, not so much romance, but who even knows anymore! --Jenny 2. I need a new author. A few of my favorite books include Ocean at the End of the Lane, Museum of Extraordinary Things, and Remarkable Creatures. I like unusual history or science, and interesting characters. Nothing too romance-y, or too magical. --Stefanie 3. Hello! I’m a prolific reader of mysteries, cozies, thrillers, true crime, and more, but the genre I want to explore more is graphic novels. I’m currently reading Sheets by Brenna Thummler, and I’m enjoying it a lot. I've read Fun Home, Maus, Persepolis, and Embroideries. I’m not into superheroes or any manga, and I’m open to some YA but prefer adult stories. I’d love a response before Christmas if possible, so I know what books to tell my family I want. Thank you! --Becky 4. Hey Amanda and Jenn, this is Lizzy from Munich. I am writing this email to surprise a friend who read „All the birds singing“ from Evie Wylde and is dealing with withdrawal symptoms ever since – as you have recommended it before, I am sure you can relate :) I read the book as well as per her recommendation and I think what she liked about it particularly was the intricate prose, the heartbreaking plot itself, but most of all the intelligent way the story is woven – she generally loves novels with a structure the intertwines past and present. Other favorites of hers are the Goldfinch, A little life, When women were birds and she also really likes Haruki Murakami. Can you recommend something that will fill the hole in her heart? This will be the perfect Christmas gift for this year. Thank you so much in advance :) Keep up the good work and warmest greetings from Germany, --Lizzy 5. This year for Christmas I'm trying to buy a book for each family member. But am stuck on my FIL! Last year he requested Brene Brown's 'rising strong' book. And on his shelf is Strengths Finder 2.0. He reads a lot of 'The Economist' and enjoys non fiction most. But I am so stuck on what to get him. Any recommendations? --Tory 6. Hi guys! Thank you for all you do!! One the last books I need for this year's Book Riot Read Harder challenge is a romance by a person of color. My trouble is that I am so, so tired of many common romance tropes. I understand why they're popular, but I'm just burned out on them. This includes love triangles, mysterious and/or brooding men, and characters who hate each other but then fall in love. I'd really love one where the leads are just two competent people living their lives and facing down the plot, and their relationship starts as friends or colleagues before it becomes romantic. I also prefer sci-fi and fantasy, which really narrows the field. Help! --Tired of the Tropes 7. Hi Jenn and Amanda, If possible, could I get a rec by mid-December, so I can buy this book as a Christmas present? My brother just rediscovered reading and has been flying through a bunch of political nonfiction (scary times). He just visited the Imperial War Rooms and Bunker in London and lovedddddd everything about the museum, so I want to get him a book on Churchill. There are so many biographies on Churchill that I didn't really know where to start, but I've heard Amanda talk about a few Churchill books before (love the podcast; I've listened to every episode and you've introduced me--and my TBR--to so many good books) so I thought you might have some ideas. I'm not looking for a book written by Churchill, but maybe a biography of him or a historical book about the war years or his general service in the British government? Thanks so much for your help! And from a former bookseller who knows how hard it is to find the books people are looking for, can I just say that you ladies are doing the Lord's work? Amanda and Jenn discuss books about the arts, kid-friendly audiobooks, Victorian-esque reads, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot Insiders, Penguin Random House Audio, and Flatiron Books, publishers of Frankie. Questions 1. I love your show! I was really getting into a slump of only reading the highly marketed books. You help me broaden my bookshelf so thanks! My husband and I recently start "reading" books together. He listens to the audio book because he is a busy MA student and drives a lot while I enjoy reading physically. We just finished Bird Box and both really enjoyed it! My husband is the finicky reader. He enjoys Stephen King and thrillers. We have Dark Matter by Blake Crouch on our to read list. I tried recommending Into the Drowning Deep, but the mermaids were too far (even though I think he would love it). We would like recommendations for thrillers/suspense with some supernatural happenings and at least one likeable/smart character. He has read most of Stephen King where as I really enjoy fantasy novels. I can do most horror/suspense. Sci Fi could be doable if it had the right characters. Please stay in the adult category as my husband does not enjoy "teen angst". Side note: I would just need a trigger warning for violence against women and children (which you always provide). Thank you in advance! --Kyla and Kyle 2. I would love ideas for books that are relationship focused but have intellectual conversation, like my favorite movies - Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight. What I love about those is that you feel so much intimacy and tension - the way one tiny thing could make everything fall apart. I have On Chesil Beach on my radar already. Normal People by Sally Rooney also came close to what I'm hoping for. --Jenny 3. Hi Ladies! Love the podcast! I have loved the Dana Stabenow, Kate Shugak mysteries. Though I love her series, I would love a recommendation for a Native American own voices author from Alaska or North Western Canada. I prefer fiction, and it does not have to be a mystery. --Jessie 4. I’m looking for recommendations for my school’s book club. We are a group of high school educators who enjoy reading broadly, so we have tried to have books that delve into different departments’ interests like The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (science) or Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (History). I would love some book recommendations where the text is heavily influenced by art or music to better represent those departments. Bonus points for diverse authors or perspectives! In the past we have also loved Station Eleven, Enrique’s Journey, The Nightingale, Educated and The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. Thanks in advance for your help! --Sarah 5. Hi! I've recently discovered audio books as an excellent way to get more books in my life on my commute every morning. I drop my kids off at two different places and I'm usually in the car for about an hour. My difficulty is finding something that I enjoy but is also appropriate for my kids to listen to, they are 2 1/2 and 4 but are VERY observant and like to mimic what they hear. So far I've listened to Blackout by Connie Willis and the The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden. I love fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, and mystery. Any recommendations you have would be awesome, thank you! --Heather 6. My dad loves traditional sci-fi. Heinlein is his favorite author ever, but he also enjoys Zelazny, Asimov, etc. I'm hoping to find new authors for him, and have had some success with the Expanse, The Martian, and with books by Elizabeth Moon. However, the Vorkosigan books, the Murderbot Diaries, Red Mars, and the Honor Harrington books all fell flat for him. Do you have suggestions for modern books in the classic sci-fi style? --Books for Space Dad 7. Hiii! :) I'm wondering if you know of any books similar to the Victorian "sensation novels" such as Lady Audley's Secret, Wilkie Collins' books etc, but which reflect modern values. I find I'm completely charmed by the trope that I call "mild mannered Victorian gentleman reluctantly and/or accidentally solves a crime," that isn't gritty or over the top but still has a lot of unforseen twists; however, I've grown so tired of books that only have white straight characters. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! --Mild Mannered Modern Reader Books Discussed The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife, and the Missing Corpse by Piu Marie Eatwell Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes (TW: violence against women and children (and everyone)) Stephen King read-alikes episode My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due (TW: graphic violence, harm to women and children) The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer A Separation by Katie Kitamura Two Old Women by Velma Wallis Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice (rec’d by Jessica and Michelle) Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro Blood, Water, Paint by Joy McCullough (tw: rape) The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman The City of Brass by S.A. This episode is sponsored by Julián is a Mermaid by Jessica Love and First Lessons by Lina J. Potter. Questions 1. Hello! I am a literature and linguistics double major and am going to be taking 5 classes at an intensive this summer. I am looking for books that are easy to read and really draw you in. I love “The Vacationers,” “the Secret History,” and “the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,” and am also a huge fan of classics but want something a bit easier to read than that. I am also looking for fiction books that take place during the rise of Irish Nationalism in the 1910s. I am reading Yeats and Joyce and would like books that will fill in a bit of background information. Thanks so much! –Quinn Elle 2. Hi, I’m looking for a specific type of book that I’m at a loss of where to find. I love love love the Little House on the Prairie series and I have not been able to find any others like it! I enjoy reading about how people lived in the pioneer days. I recently read The Snowchild which was a story of survival as well and I enjoyed that too. Please find me some books similar to those! I like fiction, nonfiction, historical, YA is fine, but please no short stories, poems, or graphic novels. Thanks so much in advance, I look forward to hearing what you recommend! –Susan 3. Hi gals, I believe you have covered something like this before, but I am not sure how to really search for without going through every past episode. Hoping you can help me! My cousin/bestie’s mother-in-law is starting chemotherapy and radiation and they would like to read something light and easy together. My cousin loved the Twilight series and she and her MiL like Nicholas Sparks and Danielle Steele. Both of them, but especially her MiL are progressive and her MiL isn’t religious (my cousin believes in God but also isn’t overly religious). Do you have any uplifting books for them to read? I think they would prefer something that distracts them a bit from the cancer and the physical and emotional pain it causes, so I’d rather it not be about anyone dying or that focuses a large part of the plot on being ill. That said, if it is an uplifting story about someone overcoming a serious illness and you think it would be a good fit for them, I’d certainly consider it. Thank you very much, –Kristin 4. Hello Get Booked! I’m a longtime listener of all things Book Riot and am coming to you for a recommendation for my mother, whose birthday is right around the corner (along with Mother’s Day). To give you an idea, she’s an avid and curious reader who loves plants and gardening, food, historical fiction, cute/feel-good stories, and books with great writing. She also likes current books, books that are on the new releases/hot reads shelf at the library, that she hears about on NPR, etc. Some books that she’s really enjoyed have been Lab Girl, Stay With Me, The Sympathizer (loved the story/writing, didn’t like the ending), The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Goodbye Vitamin. What she doesn’t like are books that are heavy-handed with their message or that have an unrealistic/unrelatable plot (she didn’t like The Nightingale, The Family Fang, or Manhattan Beach). Hopefully that will help you/me out and I can nail her birthday gift this year!! Thanks so much, –Chloe 5. Hi! I have a book swap quickly approaching with a complete stranger. It’s a “slasher” themed swap (which I have understood to mean horror or dark psychological suspense). My partner has listed Stephen King, Grady Hendrix, Richard Laymon, Anne Rice, and James Newman as her favorite authors. She has read and enjoyed The Grip of It by Jac Jemc, Bird Box by Josh Malerman, Universal Harvester by John Darnielle, NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, and Little Heaven by Nick Cutter. She did not particularly enjoy Final Girls by Riley Sager or Mapping the Interior by Stephen Graham Jones. Could you recommend a book or two for this swap that would make her day? Thanks! –Tanya 6. My sister is trying to get into reading and she keeps coming to me for book requests, which is great, but I’ve run out of ideas on what to suggest to her. She likes reading Nicholas Sparks, Sarah Dessen and John Green, but I believe at this point she’s read them all. She also thoroughly enjoyed Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult, mostly because the plot line kept her interested and she loved the sections about the elephants. I got her Where’d You Go Bernedette for her birthday which she seemed excited for but she hasn’t read it yet. She loves the outdoors and animals and nature, she just needs a plot line that is going to keep her interested from beginning to end. Thank you! –Allyson 7. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I recently discovered this podcast and have been loving it. After binging several episodes, I was tempted to submit a request of my own. I’m in my late twenties and have never been in a relationship; the short way to put it is just that I make friends rather slowly, have never found the idea of romance that appealing, and haven’t yet met anyone to change my mind. I do want a partner though and have tentatively started dating, but I’m not finding the process much fun. I wonder if you could recommend a sweet-hearted story with an older, skeptical or inexperienced narrator with a similar mindset and a happy ending. (In the ballpark of The Rosie Project maybe? Have read Persuasion and Attachments.) I have seen contemporary stories about online dating mishaps, but even humorous takes on this aren’t that encouraging for me. Obviously a Romance would be fine, but it’s also okay for the relationship to be off to the side (enjoy general fiction, mysteries, SFF, and historical fiction). I’m fine with straight or LGBTQIA, steamy bits are welcome, and actually I’ve had some luck with fantasy settings where relationships are arranged/necessary for magical health, etc. No YA and please no trigger warnings. –KS Books Discussed The Wrong Stars by Tim Pratt The Mothers by Brit Bennett Giveaway! bookriot.com/bookstore500 Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell The Wangs vs. The World by Jade Chang The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich Burial Rites by Hannah Kent A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer How to Write an Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes (TW: harm to children and basically everyone else also) Security by Gina Wohlsdorf (rec’d by Liberty) When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean

On this week’s episode of Parenting Roundabout’s entertainment-themed Round 2, Catherine and Terri take a break from all the TV they’ve been watching. Instead, they report on a book and two movies, and (because they can’t stay away from TV for too long) talk about what show to watch next. Here’s your road map: 01:24 The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George – Much like The Storied Life of AJ Fikry, we found this to be a super-book-clubby kind of book, featuring literary prescriptions and even recipes. Terri’s positive it would not be for her, but Catherine found some qualities she liked. Also mentioned: Last month’s book club pick, The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. 12:50 Thanksgiving Weekend Movies – Terri saw Disney’s Moana, some of Catherine’s family took in Allied, and Catherine hit Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with her Harry-Potter-obsessed son and several other family members. Terri appreciated Moana’s animation magic and Catherine enjoyed the critter magic in Fantastic Beasts. 24:12 New TV – We take a cue from our friends at The West Wing and ask, “What’s next?” now that we’re finished with both Sports Night and Dancing with the Stars. After a spin through several decades worth of series options, we choose a winner: The Great American Baking Show, premiering December 1 on ABC. For next week’s episode, we’ll return to The West Wing with the episode “Noel” and see if the American bakers are worth their sugar and flour. Join us!
