Episode 600. On August 21st the Modern Warfare 4 early access beta, the WARDOGS closed beta, and Call of Duty NEXT all land on the same day — and the two games are asking for wildly different amounts of money. We go through everything Activision is cramming into the MW4 beta: a playable campaign mission called Entrenched, six multiplayer maps, the return of Ground War, and a brand new Warzone Resurgence map called Zodiac. Then we put odds on whether any of it actually works over a single weekend. Spoiler: 20%. Omnimovement is gone. We get into what replaced it, whether removing it was a gameplay decision or a marketing one, and why "you can climb pipes now" is the funniest thing Infinity Ward has ever put in a press release. On the WARDOGS side: $39.99 Early Access on September 10, over a million Steam wishlists, and a promise of no in-game monetization that came out of one very bad Reddit post. We argue that the promise is a mistake — and that the most consumer-friendly thing a game can do is just be good. Plus DMZ2, aim assist, and why Infinity Ward is about to be spread way too thin. 0:00 - Intro — 600 episodes 2:09 - Patreon free trials all August 4:02 - Patron hangout: August 28th 5:30 - Two betas, one Friday 6:49 - MW4 beta dates and the pre-order wall 7:44 - A campaign mission in a beta — a CoD first 10:23 - The battle dad theory 13:24 - Discord Nitro gets you in free 15:28 - All six multiplayer maps 16:06 - Ground War is back 20:24 - Zodiac: a new Resurgence map in the beta 23:56 - Modes, and the ones held back 25:33 - 19 weapons and a fake pre-order camo 26:59 - "It's gonna be a buggy fucking disaster" 28:51 - Putting the odds at 20% 31:13 - Why I win either way 33:23 - No more omnimovement 33:48 - Climbing pipes is just a ladder 35:58 - Was omnimovement actually better? 40:22 - Mantling as the Warzone middle ground 43:06 - What actually makes you a casual? 51:12 - WARDOGS 51:50 - Closed beta August 21–23 53:30 - Three maps at launch? Our favorite things about World of Warcraft patch 12.1 are mostly related to Player Housing, if we're being for real. There are other things to look forward to — raids, delves, quests, and maybe lore if you're into that kind of thing — but yeah, we're mulling over a name change to HousingWatch. But the patch is still new, so that could change. Probably won't, but it could. We're also excited that D.Mon is coming to Overwatch. Another character that's been on everyone's wishlist for years, D.Mon also has a lot of story associated with her, including a few new lore drops. Our cohosts are optimistic about what this means for Overwatch and the lore going forward. But, hold that thought, because the next news item is about the Microsoft management. Or at least, don't take a big swig of water here.If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. Mike Sarraille served 20 years in special operations as a Recon Marine, scout sniper, Navy SEAL, and troop commander in Delta Force. He graduated number one out of three hundred in Marine boot camp, fought in some of the worst firefights of the Iraq War, and broke four world records skydiving across seven continents in under seven days. Then he started a company. Joe De Sena sits down with Mike to hear why he says building a business with no budget and no guaranteed resources is harder than anything he faced in combat, how he scaled a data center staffing company from fifty employees to five hundred in eighteen months, and what the tier-one military teaches about team performance that most corporate leaders get wrong. Things You Will Learn: Why a Delta Force troop commander says entrepreneurship tested him more than combat, and what specific skills transferred and which did not. The difference between warfighters and warriors, and why combining both creates the leaders people actually follow. Why productive conflict inside a high-performing team is the system itself, not a sign that something is broken. Tools & Frameworks Covered: Shared Hardship Bonding: Psychology shows that teams bonded through shared adversity build trust that cannot be replicated through offsites or team dinners. Find controlled hardship your team can experience together. Iron Sharpens Iron Selection: Always find a group where you are the underperformer. Clear the bar they hold as the standard. Then find the next group above that. Conflict as Operating System: High-performing teams fight over ideas constantly. The mission prevails, not individual egos. If everyone agrees all the time, the team is underperforming. If this episode moved you, do not just listen. Do something about it. Sign up. Show up. Do the work. Spartan.com. No more excuses. He graduated number one out of three hundred in Marine boot camp, deployed multiple times to Iraq, and led the Triple Seven Expedition, skydiving across all seven continents in six days, six hours, and six minutes to break four world records. After leaving the military, he built and sold an executive search firm, wrote three books, The Talent War, The Everyday Warrior, and Teams, and now serves as Chief Talent Officer at Overwatch, a data center staffing company he scaled from fifty to five hundred employees in under eighteen months. He ranked number three globally for leadership speaking. Matt McCrann is U.S. CEO of SPARC AI. SPARC AI develops software that enables precision navigation and target acquisition for drones and autonomous systems operating in GPS-denied environments. Its flagship platform, Overwatch, is a software-only, hardware-agnostic solution that transforms the sensors already onboard a drone into a resilient positioning system—without requiring additional hardware. The platform also supports detection, tracking, and multi-drone coordination, providing operators with greater situational awareness in contested environments. Matt leads SPARC AI's expansion across the United States, overseeing commercial strategy, customer engagement, and adoption of the company's positioning technology. Before joining SPARC AI, he built DroneShield's U.S. business from the ground up as CEO of its American subsidiary. Earlier in his career, Matt served in the United States Navy as an Intelligence Operator and Analyst and as a member of the NSA's Cryptologic Direct Support Element, supporting national security and operational missions. Whether it's electronic warfare, jamming, spoofing, or simply operating where satellite signals can't reach, today's drones face a growing challenge: how do they continue to navigate accurately and complete the mission? In this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Matt talks about the growing challenge of GPS-denied operations, how SPARC AI's Overwatch platform helps autonomous systems navigate without relying solely on GPS, what the company is learning from deployments in Ukraine, and why resilient positioning is becoming an essential capability for the next generation of drones.
WARDOGS ran its first ever gameplay livestream this week and it went about as well as you'd expect from a studio full of guys in their late twenties: the alpha codes were a QR-code disaster, the stream started two hours late, and it ended with a Twitch ban for throwing a sex toy across the room. And yet — the actual gameplay looked incredible. We break down everything we saw: the enormous map, the three-team control zone loop, the destructible environments, the buy menu, and why Bulkhead's 60 FPS performance floor and "gamers first, devs second" attitude has us more hyped for this game than anything else on the calendar. Plus: is a monthly subscription for better servers and anti-cheat a genuinely good idea or the start of a slippery slope? Then it's Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, which just opened its first free crossplay playtest on the new Đắk Tô Airfield map — the performance is fixed, the hit reg is fixed, and the map is a massive upgrade over that awful jungle one. And Battlefield 6 Season 4 finally brought naval warfare, Tsuru Reef, and a Top Gun crossover that people are somehow mad about. We close with what we've actually been playing — Overwatch ranked, Stellaris Nomads, a lot of Tarkov, and one MMO Raz will absolutely keep playing despite telling you not to touch it. Jake's out here getting one-tapped in Tarkov. Raz is defending a game he just called a pile of dog shit. The world of esports is growing rapidly. Video games have become a multibillion dollar industry in the United States, outpacing the music and film industries by hundreds of billions of dollars. In Missouri, more universities are embracing esports by offering scholarships to athletes for games like Valorant, Overwatch 2, and Super Smash Brothers. Rob Powell, founder and CEO of BGG Foundation, and Fletcher Springfield, a rising Southeast Missouri State freshman, talk about how casual gamers can become esports athletes, and how esports helped them land education and career opportunities.

Host Jeremy C. Park interviews Mickey Keaton, owner and operator of Bluff City Overwatch LLC, who highlights his drone education and training program and efforts to help equip youth for success in the growing industries and related job opportunities. Mickey explains how his experience with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office drone unit inspired him to launch Bluff City Overwatch to educate people about proper drone operations and FAA regulations, as many recreational drone users were violating safety rules. The program offers Introduction to Drone Operations classes where students can earn their FAA Recreational Pilot Certification and learn basic flight skills for $105 per student with a maximum class size of 12 participants. Mickey discusses the vast career opportunities in drone technology, from delivery services to construction, firefighting, and beyond, emphasizing how the program not only teaches STEM skills but also provides workforce development opportunities. He expresses particular interest in bringing the program to underserved communities like North Haven, where businesses could partner to sponsor classes and provide additional support like meals for students. The interview highlights how Mickey's personal and professional experiences, including his role as a Scoutmaster, have helped transform both his family's understanding of drone technology and the lives of young people in our community. Mickey provides his contact information, including their Bluff City Overwatch page on Facebook and email address mickey@bluffcityoverwatch.com for businesses and individuals interested in getting involved or enrolling in classes. Email Mickey at mickey@bluffcityoverwatch.com to learn more about Bluff City Overwatch LLC.

It's sale season, and Jason and Chris are trying to decide what is actually worth buying. Amazon Prime Day leads to a surprising lack of purchases, the Steam Summer Sale creates a very familiar kind of temptation, and new hardware may or may not be entering the picture. In between, Overwatch continues to make its case, while Fellowship raises a bigger question: what happens when a game gives you exactly the part you wanted, but maybe not everything else you need? Stick around after the end for a Steam Machine discussion that may turn into an expensive decision.

Do you remember how last week we were talking about how voidy and purple the Midnight expansion has been? Well, hold on to your shorts, because patch 12.1 has been announced and it's acid green and snaky. We're shook, but especially Liz, who doesn't particularly enjoy snakes, and wishes there was a filter like arachnophobia mode, where all the snakes turned into crabs. There are so many new features announced already, from the new Lairs, which are sort of a new version of World Bosses, all the way to a WoW Discord integration, which we're a little skeptical is all that useful. Also not purple is the Midsummer Fire Festival, which has come to WoW until July. There are a ton of orange rewards to collect, including a very hot new mount. There are also new seasons coming soon to Diablos 3 and 4, and for Diablo 4 this includes a collab with Overwatch, bringing some of those hero skins into Sanctuary. This is just making me wonder when we'll get that Raynor skin for Druids. Hey, everybody! Sid, Tim, and O'Dell are back this week to discuss some new details on upcoming games. But since it's a quieter week, we take the opportunity to dive into the team's latest gaming adventures and triumphs, including 007 First Light, Mina The Hollower, and Overwatch.
We start off this week's podcast talking about a few upcoming things we've already sort of discussed -- WoW patch 12.0.7 is coming next week, as is the next season of Overwatch. We have a few gripes on how the Overwatch story is being delivered, but next season looks okay. We're much more enthusiastic about the stuff coming for Diablo. And then things get wild, when we start discussing Summer Game Fest, and all the new titles we're excited to see, ranging from the headline blockbusters all the way down to little murder mysteries that might not actually be murder mysteries.Plus, speaking of murders, Destiny 2 just got its final patch. RIP, too pure for this world. If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. Justin's got the week off, so Seth steps in as co-host and the conversation does not disappoint. Doug and Seth dig into a Reddit question that sent them both deep into the nostalgia rabbit hole: of all the computer games you played between 1985 and 2010, what's the one you still think about today? Seth goes back to the PC port of Final Fantasy VII — the game that defined the RPG genre for a generation of players who couldn't afford a PlayStation — and StarCraft, the game that proved the internet was both a gift and a curse once Korean players started annihilating everyone on Battle.net. Doug lands on Diablo, Counter Strike, Half-Life, and Team Fortress from what he describes as the best summer of his life, plus Warcraft II and the legendary dorm-vs-dorm Counter Strike leaderboard that consumed an entire semester. Seth adds Morrowind and the Halo 2 university network wars, including the top-ranked player named Mixomatosis who turned out to live three doors down and was simply a different kind of person. The gaming conversation rolls naturally into a deep dive on Marvel Rivals, Overwatch, and hero shooter culture — the difference between quick match and competitive, the rage of random teammates, why role-locking exists, and why you absolutely should not be trying out a new character in ranked. But first: Doug's mom has a long history of purging spices from the family pantry, and it explains a lot about his childhood. From there Doug and Seth debate overrated recipes (the dump-and-bake casserole situation has gotten out of hand), wage war over cottage cheese, and discover halloumi together in real time. Underrated picks include millionaire shortbread and candied pecans — two things that deserve far more attention. Plus fair food: dirty, suspect, and somehow perfect. A quick Clair Obscure Expedition 33 check-in leads into the episode's new game: AI or LinkedIn? Doug reads posts and Seth has to guess whether each one is a genuine LinkedIn post or AI generated. The results are both funnier and sadder than expected — especially the guy who timed his lunch at four minutes and 37 seconds because what isn't measured doesn't improve. This week's recommendations: Seth — Taskmaster (free on YouTube, 21 seasons). Five comedians, bizarre tasks, Greg Davies and Alex Horne hosting. One of the best shows you haven't watched yet. Doug — The Backrooms (A24). Directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons based on the viral liminal space internet lore. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars. One of A24's highest-grossing films. Go see it. Plus: what even is SCP? Seth explains, and the answer sends Doug down a rabbit hole he didn't budget time for. Hosted by Josh and Alpha, the show explores what's really shaping the world beneath the headlines. From information warfare and behavioral manipulation… to human psychology, cultural engineering, spirituality, technology, and the lived experiences that form who we are — nothing is off limits. This isn't surface-level commentary. We break down narratives. We examine power structures. We challenge assumptions. And we follow threads wherever they lead — even when they're uncomfortable. Each episode blends strategic analysis with personal insight, moving seamlessly between high-level intelligence concepts and real-world human stories. One host watches the battlefield. The other guards the soul. Together, they ask the questions most people feel — but few are willing to say out loud. If you're curious about how influence works, how reality is shaped, and what it means to stay conscious in an engineered world… this is your signal. Truth. Strategy. Awareness. Welcome to Overwatch & The Guardian.
Today we're joined by Nicholas Yochum, an LA based sound designer currently working at Blizzard on Overwatch, where he focuses on synthesized sounds to help create effects with a more clean, stylized aesthetic. He's on the heroes team and is currently working on new heroes for the game. Nicholas and I actually go way back to like 2012 in Boston, so it's cool to finally catch up. We get into how he got into the industry — starting out at a third party audio company called Hexany, which he describes as kind of like sound design boot camp, and eventually landing a senior sound designer role at Blizzard, which even he still seems a little surprised about. We talk about what stylized sound design actually means — why game audio has been pulling more and more from the electronic music world, and how listening to stuff like Noisia is basically research at this point. We also get into the difference between working at a third party studio versus being embedded on a game team, and why that sense of ownership and connection to the work ended up mattering a lot to him. Hope you enjoy it. Please welcome Nicholas Yochum.
