Talent X Effort = Ability and Achievement” - Andrew Klassen  Band Director at Menonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, Winnipeg Canada Welcome back to The Band Director's Lounge! Today I am chatting with Mr. Andrew Klassen who teaches at Menonite Brethren Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg, Canada. Andrew and I first got connected through a trip that I was going to be taking with my high school band students this spring and his school was going to host us for part of our tour. Together we had done much of the leg-work to get the exchange day organized and then….COVID hit one week before we were about to depart to Canada. In hindsight, it was good that things played out the way they did with the cancellation of our trip. However based on my interactions with Mr.Klassen from afar I wanted to get to know him and his program and share that with you. Background Andrew Klassen has taught 6-12 band at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute for the past 33 years. Andrew is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, where he won numerous performance scholarships and competitions. He is the first saxophonist in Canada to be awarded the Royal Conservatory of Music Gold Medal for his ARCT diploma, and is a first prize winner of both the Lawrence Genser and Women's Musical Club Scholarship Competitions. Mr. Klassen has adjudicated throughout the Prairies, instructed in saxophone at the University of Manitoba and taught pedagogy at the University of Winnipeg. As a performer, he has played as a saxophonist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and as a violist in the Bel Canto String Quartet, and is active in leading worship at Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church.  He is a former Artistic Director and guest conductor of the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble. Mr. Klassen has also guest-conducted the University of Manitoba Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, the Manitoba Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Honour Bands, and numerous regional honour bands, community bands, and band camps. Andrew is a recipient of the Manitoba Band Association's Award of Distinction, the University of Manitoba's Excellence in Music Education Award, and has presented on music education topics at the Manitoba Music Conference.  Each August, Mr. Klassen coordinates a highly successful Junior Band Summer Camp which has served over 1200 students from 80 Manitoba schools the past 24 years. Episode 3 of the Digital Introverts podcast features Amos Vang. He is a sports announcer, classical pianist, podcast host, emcee, and voice actor that is currently pursuing a Juris Doctor at the University of Ottawa Law School. Before law school, Amos completed a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Law at Carleton University. At ages 18 and 19, Amos wrote his first two law publications in the Carleton University Journal of Legal Studies. Amos graduated with High Distinction in the top 3% of his class and was awarded a Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement. As a sports announcer, Amos has announced volleyball, swimming, hockey, basketball, soccer, rugby, and lacrosse. At 19 years of age, Amos announced the 2016 NBA All-Star Challenge in Ottawa. At 21 years of age, Amos announced the 2017 Canadian Junior Swimming Championships on his first national CBC Sports broadcast. Amos was also the English announcer of the 2018 U Sports Swimming Championships at the University of Toronto. Amos has worked with renowned sports and entertainment personalities such as TSN NHL Senators post-game host and “The Drive” host Lee Versage, two-time Gemini Award-winning CBC Olympics sports announcer Byron MacDonald, Olympic Bronze Medallist Brittany MacLean, Toronto Raptors NBA entertainer Quincy “Q-Mack” Mack, and former Toronto Raptors All-Star player Antonio Davis. Currently, Amos is a sports announcer for the University of Ottawa Garnet and Grey, also known as the Gee-Gees, and announces volleyball, basketball, and hockey. At age 23, Amos made his debut on TSN and announced the 2020 Capital Hoops Classic on TSN 1200. In his first year of law school, Amos was a semi-finalist at the 2018 Nelligan O'Brien Payne Moot Court Competition. This achievement was recognized by The Honourable Justice Malcolm Rowe of the Supreme Court of Canada. Amos is also a podcast host of “The Law School Show” and has interviewed guests such as Harvard-trained lawyer Rebecca Bromwich, Queen's University Legal Counsel Lon Knox, University of Ottawa President Jacques Frémont, and Ottawa-renowned named partner Janice Payne. Amos also combined the legal and hockey worlds by announcing the 2019 Ottawa Law Classic. As a classical pianist, Amos studied under his mother, Quan Mach, and under former Royal Conservatory of Music faculty member and Concert Artists International Piano Competition Grand Prize Winner Wang Yang. Amos did his ARCT at age 14 and was a finalist in the 2012 Canadian Music Competition at age 16. He has performed both solo recitals and ensemble performances in Ottawa, Toronto, and Mississauga, including at the Living Arts Centre and the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. He has also performed alongside the Chinese Artists Society of Toronto. His voice-over work includes sports documentaries for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and the Carleton University Ravens. Jerrica Alyssa is a Canadian Pop/R&B Artist.  Born and raised in Vancouver and now lives in Nashville, TN.  A conservatory trained pianist at ARCT,  the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is an accomplished singer/songwriter, and a professional Polynesian dancer.  She is now writing, recording and performing as a solo artist, creating a voluptuous mix of pop, funk, and R&B, with industry veteran Joseph Magee (Pitch Perfect, Miley Cyrus, Metallica, Whitney Houston. In her spare time she records voice sessions in film and TV. Jerrica has toured in China, Philippines, Japan, South Korea, UK, Ireland, Hawaii, Polynesia throughout Canada and the USA.   She has appeared on the Voice, Canadian Idol and Variety’s Got Talent. James Langevin (Toronto, Canada) A past student of University Settlement Music & Arts School, James Langevin was the recipient of numerous scholarships towards both his violin and piano studies. After leaving University Settlement, James completed his teaching ARCT with the Royal Conservatory of Music and pursued his post-secondary studies at the Glenn Gould Professional School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Canadian piano virtuoso, Andrew Burashko. For over a decade, James has been a dance class pianist for the National Ballet School and a frequent guest accompanist for the National Ballet of Canada. James is a long-time dance examination pianist for the Cecchetti Society and the Royal Academy of Dance, recently travelling to Bermuda for examination work. In 2012, Mr. Langevin was the rehearsal pianist for the eighth International Erik Bruhn Competition for Emerging Dancers held at the Four Seasons Center and later that year, journeyed to Montreal for accompaniment work for the Festival de Danse. In addition to his piano teaching studio, James also enjoys experimenting with sound design and textures by creating electronic music. He is both a composer and arranger, having written and recorded music for the Toronto Fringe Festival, Ryerson Act 2 Studio and the Alumnae Theater Company of Toronto. In 2014 James signed a recording deal with the music licensing service Premium Beat to record works by Chopin, Mozart, Debussy and Shostakovich for use in media projects such as videos, films, games and television programming. Among his recorded works are a full-length ballet CD and a disc of classical recordings. Background: Comparison of accelerated radiochemotherapy (aRCT) and standard radiotherapy (sRT) in postoperative treatment after macroscopically complete resection of squamous cell cancers of head and neck. Material and Methods: 229 patients treated within the same period had either (no randomization) postoperative radiotherapy with conventional fractionation (60-70 Gy, 2.0 Gy per day) or received 2 fractions of 2.1 Gy per day, 8 timestextbackslash{}week, up to a total dose of 56.7 Gy with a treatment split after 2 weeks and simultaneous low dose cisplatin or carboplatin on treatment clays (cumulative dose >66 mg/m(2) or 550 mg/m(2) in 83% of patients). Results: 65 patients completed their course of twice-daily irradiations within a maximum of 35 days and therefore had aRCT; their 3-year locoregional tumor control (Kaplan-Meier estimate) was 86%, whereas that of 42 patients with prolonged twice-daily radiochemotherapy was 65% (p=0.0509). After sRT, i.e. 1 fraction daily and treatment time up to 45 days, locoregional tumor control was 67%, this result being significantly inferior to that after aRCT (p=0.0282). In multivariate analysis, pN stage, tumor site oral cavity/floor of mouth, high/moderate differentiation of squamous cell carcinoma and conventional surgery (versus CO2-laser surgery) were significantly predictive of locoregional failure. Whereas nodal status, the strongest prognostic factor, was evenly distributed among aRCT and sRT patients, there was a misbalance of 3 risk factors favoring the aRCT collective. Superior tumor control after aRCT was confirmed unilaterally for nearly each subgroup (significant for recurrent tumors, close margins, pN1/2a-b). For pN2c/pN3 nodal stage, the results after aRCT were by tendency worse than after sRT, possibly due to a particularly long interval between surgery and start of radio(chemo)therapy for the patients with aRCT (mean 58.0 days vs. 43.8 days, p=0.037). Among the total of patients the 3-year hazard for late toxicity Ill-IV was 31% after twice-daily treatment and 17% after conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (p=0.083). Conclusions:This retrospective analysis provides some evidence that accelerated radiotherapy with simultaneous chemotherapy is more potent than standard radiotherapy. However, as multivariate analysis misses significance and the influence of misbalance of some prognostic factors among aRCT and sRT patients remains unclear, only a randomized trial with stratification according to risk factors as well as a defined interval between surgery and initiation of RT can provide more evidence.
