Gun violence tends to surge during the summer months, and though gun violence in Cleveland dropped by 24% from 2023 to 2024, the city's latest available data, children are still most at risk to die by gun violence. Firearms have been the leading cause of death in teens and children nationwide since 2020. Many major cities around Northeast Ohio have invested a lot into their efforts to reduce gun violence. Cleveland developed its 2026 Summer Safety Plan, which includes citizen outreach, violence interruption programs and street repairs. Last year, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said the city's Violence Intervention & Prevention Strategic Plan helped to reduce gun violence through programs like the Akron Street Team, which meets with those at high risk of engaging in future violence. Additionally, Cleveland Public Library partnered with the Cuyahoga County Office of Violence Prevention and other community partners to provide gun safes and locks to promote gun safety practices. However, some don't think that's enough. After a tragic shooting on Cleveland's west side killed three people this weekend, City Councilman Mike Polensek is calling for a "show of force" from law enforcement. On Wednesday's "Sound of Ideas," we'll talk about gun violence in Northeast Ohio, and how government and community partners are working together to make neighborhoods safer this summer. Guests:- Daniel Flannery, Ph.D., Professor & Director, Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education, Case Western Reserve University- Myesha Watkins, Administrator, Office of Violence Prevention, Cuyahoga County- Eufrancia Lash, President, 100 Black Men of Akron

In this episode of So Ambitious, Jeff Johnson breaks down what it really means to lead, build, and evolve as a founder, especially as a Black entrepreneur navigating identity, capital, and visibility. From building in media and activism to advising leaders across industries, Jeff shares hard truths about performance vs authenticity, founder identity, mental health, and the hidden cost of success. He challenges the way we think about capital, power, and growth, and introduces a bigger idea: building ecosystems instead of just companies. This conversation is for founders who are not just trying to win, but trying to build with integrity, lead with clarity, and create something that outlives them. KEY POINTS - Many founders are performing instead of truly showing up - Emotional suppression is the hidden cost of leadership - Success without identity clarity leads to burnout and disconnection - Founders must separate who they are from what they build - Building a personal board of directors is essential for growth - Capital is not just money; it is trust, relationships, and access - Black founders are often seen as assets (not as people in funding spaces) - The future is ecosystems that create lasting impact QUOTABLES “I'm in a place where I'm allergic to bullshit.” – Jeff Johnson “A healthier man will always be a better CEO.” – Jeff Johnson “We have created a founder culture that is rooted in celebrity.” – Jeff Johnson “Our greatest ambition should not be how much we raise in this next round. It should be, are we free in our own heart[s].” – Jeff Johnson RESOURCES Jeff Johnson IG | @jeffsnation Felecia Hatcher IG | @feleciahatcher Black Ambition IG | @blackambitionprize So Ambitious is produced by EPYC Media

In this powerful episode of Black Men Speak, we sit down with Aaron Johnson, founder of The Chronically Undertouched Project, to unpack a silent crisis affecting Black men—the lack of safe, intentional human touch. Drawing from his viral TED Talk and documentary Dark and Tender, Aaron shares how years without platonic connection can lead to isolation, depression, and emotional disconnection, and why something as simple as a hug can be life-changing. Together, we explore how cultural conditioning, trauma, and systemic oppression have shaped the way Black men experience touch—and how reclaiming connection through listening, presence, and brotherhood can become a pathway to healing. This conversation challenges everything we've been taught about masculinity and asks a bold question: What would change if Black men got just 15 minutes of real connection each day?

Over the past few weeks, there have been multiple high-profile incidents of Black men committing acts of violence against their loved ones, from a man in Shreveport killing his children, to the former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia killing himself and his wife. On this episode, we're asking: What does this violence have to do with patriarchy? What does it have to do with mental health? What does it have to do with race and gender? And what would it take to create a culture that actually protects Black women and children?See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Terrance Wright. Actor, Marine veteran, and wellness advocate—joins Rushion McDonald to discuss his unscripted docuseries House of Healing, a project centered on emotional wellness, vulnerability, and mental health among Black men. The conversation explores why safe spaces for emotional expression are rare but essential, particularly for Black men and veterans, and how House of Healing was intentionally created to challenge long-standing stigmas around therapy, masculinity, and mental health. Through personal stories, examples from the series, and reflections on brotherhood, Wright explains how professional therapy, peer accountability, and intentional vulnerability can lead to real healing and personal transformation.txt). Purpose of the Interview The primary purpose of the interview is to: Introduce and explain the docuseries House of Healing and its mission.txt) [ Normalize conversations about mental health and therapy, especially among Black men and veterans.txt) Encourage men to seek help, community, and emotional honesty without shame or fear of judgment.txt) Show how storytelling and entertainment can be used as tools for healing, not just consumption.txt) Wright makes it clear that the end goal is not just viewership, but impact—helping viewers recognize themselves, seek resources, and believe healing is possible. Key Takeaways 1. Black Men Are Often Taught to Suppress Emotions Wright emphasizes that many Black men grow up conditioned to equate toughness with silence, which leads to unaddressed trauma and stress over time. The series challenges this cultural conditioning by creating permission to feel and speak openly.txt). 2. Healing Requires Safe, Intentional Spaces House of Healing was born from the realization that even within strong brotherhoods, men often avoid discussing what they’re truly going through. The house environment, shared living, and guided conversations were designed to remove distractions and foster trust.txt). 3. Professional Therapy Is Essential—Not a Weakness A central theme of the interview is combating the stigma around therapy. Wright intentionally integrated licensed professionals into the series to demonstrate that therapy is a tool for growth, not failure.txt). 4. Trauma Isn’t Only About the Battlefield Wright explains PTSD as unresolved experiences that remain mentally present, whether from childhood bullying, personal loss, or combat. These unresolved moments can impact sleep, relationships, and emotional regulation years later.txt). [ 5. Veterans Need Peer-Based Healing Models Drawing from his Marine background, Wright highlights how veterans often lack reference points for emotional processing. Healing becomes more accessible when done alongside peers who share similar experiences and understand the language of service.txt). 6. Vulnerability Can Create Unexpected Breakthroughs One powerful story involved a cast member reconnecting—by coincidence—with the son of a former partner who had passed away, resulting in emotional closure and lasting healing. This moment reinforced the show’s belief that healing can happen when people are open and present. Notable Quotes “We have all these expectations as Black men, but very rarely is the conversation about: are we okay mentally?”. “That conversation is not for anybody else. That conversation is for you.”(Referring to the “Man in the Mirror” therapy exercise). “A lot of us don’t believe in therapy because we’ve never had reference for those conversations.”. “Healing isn’t just for us in the house—it’s for anybody watching who sees themselves in our stories.”. Conclusion The interview positions House of Healing as more than a docuseries—it’s a cultural intervention. Terrance Wright uses storytelling, brotherhood, and professional support to redefine masculinity as emotionally honest, mentally aware, and community-centered. Rushion McDonald’s questions help surface the deeper intention behind the project: creating visibility and permission for healing where it has historically been denied. #SHMS #STRAW #BESTSteve Harvey Morning Show Online: http://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Emil Pinnock is an accomplished film director, producer, and writer who has been active in the film industry for over 20 years. Raised in Harlem, Emil launched his film career as a child on the PBS television program Reading Rainbow. His many major motion picture credits include Beloved (Oprah Winfrey) and Gridiron Gang starring Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson. But the pivotal moment in Emil's life occurred in 2001, on his 19th birthday, when he and his friends were pulled over in Queens, New York, and wrongly arrested for possession of a firearm. This harrowing experience imprinted in this gentle, well-educated young man the dark underbelly of racial injustice ... and became the basis of his breakthrough, award-winning television series, "Up North."That project launched an illustrious career in television and film that continues to flourish to this day. Emil has been tapped to write an original story about The Negro Baseball Leagues (Blackball) produced by Abigail Disney's Level Forward; and the origin story of legendary entrepreneur Daymond John (Shark Tank, FUBU) Emil lives by the motto, "Each one teach one" and has dedicated much of his professional life to helping others. His non-profit, Unleashing Giants, has served thousands of kids from underrepresented communities across the nation, offering an 8-week film program on the film industry via hands-on training, mentorship, and global distribution. Emil also sits on the board of Represent Justice. At its core, Represent Justice uses the power of storytelling to engage audiences in reimagining the legal system … and creating real demand for change. Swan Dive featured the CEO of Represent Justice, Daniel Forkkio, in an extraordinary 2024 episode. Represent Justice just inked a major deal with Tubi, the streaming network with 100 million viewers. Emil was instrumental in securing the Tubi partnership which will feature five magnificent short films made by formerly-incarcerated people and produced by Represent Justice. Over the next few episodes, Swan Dive will feature these filmmakers and discover how they are surviving our system of injustice. We are honored to kick off and celebrate these important voices with the magnificent voice of Emil Pinnock.Have a Swan Dive to share?
