On October 31st, 1974, the O'Bryan family set out for Halloween in Deer Park, just outside of Houston, Texas. Despite the rain, Ronald Clark O'Bryan and neighbor Jim Bates took their kids, four in total, out to trick or treating. But this Halloween turned out to be fatal for one of the O'Bryan children. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss The Candy Man. Timothy O'Bryan ate a Pixy Stix that night, became extremely ill, and died. This caused a massive panic throughout the area. The police weren't sure who was giving out laced candy and how much was out there. People were shocked when the police figured out who perpetrated this heinous act. In part two of our Halloween specials, things go bump in the night as we look at what we're calling the Black Horror Canon—horror films that feature Black heroes and protagonists, majority Black casts, or stories rooted in the Black experience. We resurrect some true classics like Night of the Living Dead, Blacula, and Candyman, then creep our way into more modern examples such as Attack the Block, Get Out, and Nope. We even touch on Black horror comedies like Tales from the Hood and The Blackening. Along the way, we ponder why some Black characters don't make it past the first act, Black audiences' long and complicated relationship with horror both on screen and in real life, and what keeps all of us coming back to horror—the genre that just won't die!
This week, on How to Survive, Danielle and Kristine learn how to survive urban legends — from Cropsey to Candyman — and comedian Kevin Avery joins to share his own real-life medical scare involving a benign tumor. It's a mix of monsters, medicine, and mayhem — only on How to Survive!
Educator & podcaster Tony Holt Jr returns to GCC to talk about the first of Ralph Ellison's essays; Shadow and Act! This massive conversation had to be split in two (all Patreon supporters already have it in full), but this week in part 1, Tony & Mike discuss Ellison's writing style and the value & timelessness of the essays. The two come from different perspectives (Tony: a Black American and Mike: a White Englishman) and not only discuss how a healthy dialogue can be made, but also spend their time deconstructing the meaning and value of such discussions and the work of these essays, both on specific parts and on the overall themes within. Although we encourage you to read these essays, they are not essential to enjoying this incredibly important discussion on one of the 20th Century's most talented and prolific authors. Their first Ellison discussion on GCC was in ep 260 (February 2025) delving deep into Ellison's most famous written work; Invisible Man. Part 2 will release in two weeks, but if you want early access, as well as bonus episodes, including extra episodes for Spooky Season, including the Candyman and the Scooby-Doo movies, and more! A must for any Halloween watchlist, Candyman (1992) remains one of horror's most haunting reflections on myth, race, and obsession. In this episode of Cutting Deep into Horror, hosts Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi dig into Bernard Rose's chilling vision, exploring how Clive Barker's original short story “The Forbidden” transformed into a film that defined early-'90s horror. We dissect Tony Todd's commanding performance as Candyman, Virginia Madsen's descent into madness, and the real-world setting of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing projects, where folklore and fear intertwine. From the gothic tragedy of Helen Lyle to the legacy of Candyman as a mirror of societal anxieties, Henrique and Rachael unpack why this film's legacy still cuts deep over thirty years later.Inside this episode:
What's crawling between the walls of your old apartment building? Roaches? Rats? The cast of "Only Murders in the Building"? Ruthie May McCoy found out in the worse way that it could be something so much worse.

It's October, so that means it's time for our “Shocktober” series, where we cover movies that go bump in the night! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Tony Sedani discuss Tom Savini's overlooked 1990 remake of the George Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead!A quick pace! Mild undead nudity! Shocking neck violence! A door you can punch through! A female lead who transitions from damsel in distress to legitimate action hero! Fantastic makeup effects and memorable zombie designs, including one that's twisted up like a pretzel! A great "one awful night in a single location" movie! No real explanation for the horrors that ensue! Social commentary on division and class war! Good ol' boys toying with zombies! Feelings of hopelessness! An impossible Candyman reference! A cast that includes the legendary Tony Todd, Laura Dern's stunt double from Jurassic Park, Patricia Tallman, the writer of The Gingerdead Man, William Butler, an unrecognizable Bill Moseley, and Tom Towles as the worst dude ever! While it may live in the shadow of the 1968 original, it's one of the better remakes and some people's preferred version of Night of the Living Dead! In addition, Alex talks about his favorite movies from Fantastic Fest 2025, including the Iko Uwais-produced martial arts extravaganza Ikatan Darah, Johannes Roberts' monkey-gone-mad creature feature Primate, Justin Long's unique take on corrupt cops in Los Angeles, Night Patrol, Steve Kostanki's Deathstalker, V/H/S/Halloween, the shark thriller Beast of War, and Curry Barker's oddly funny cautionary horror tale, Obsession! Finally, Tony shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Long Walk, One Battle After Another, Good Boy, and The Smashing Machine, while Alex does the same for the Shudder original Night of the Reaper, and the realization of a plumber's worst nightmare, Scared Shitless! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. How did a British ghost story set in a Liverpool council estate became America's most haunting urban legend? In 1992, director Bernard Rose transformed Clive Barker's British ghost story, The Forbidden, into one of horror's most intelligent and thought-provoking slashers. But the inspiration ran deeper than fiction. The tragic 1987 murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy, who called 911 claiming someone was breaking into her Chicago apartment through her bathroom mirror, is a chilling real life inspiration to one of cinema's most enduring, and gothically romantic horror icons.Candyman is not just a horror movie; it's a reflection of societal fears, racial injustice, and the haunting legacy of violence against Black people in America, specifically black men. The film, set in the Cabrini Green housing project, serves as a backdrop for a story that's both supernatural and tragically real. Tony Todd's portrayal of Candyman is chilling yet tragic, highlighting the character's backstory as a victim of racial injustice rather than just a typical horror villain. Helen Lyle, a white woman who becomes entangled in the Candyman myth, exposes the privilege and naivety that often accompany the quest for truth. The contrast between her character and the realities faced by the residents of Cabrini Green is not just a plot device; it's a commentary on who gets to tell stories and which voices are heard.I dare you to say his name five times... It's too late to cry cancel culture. The Dems continue to cry for unity, yet they defend and do not speak about the extreme left that celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk and also don't apologize for their own divisive rhetoric. US Senator from Texas Ted Cruz joins James T. in the center ring to give his take on all the happenings. JD Vance was the guest host for the Charlie Kirk show yesterday and the Vice President also made it known how unity cannot happen without accountability. Also, Memphis and the Storm Troopers, Candyman, Hood Tours, and so much more.
As the James T. begins to speak about the Trump administration sending in the National Guard into Memphis, he reminisces about the horror of crimes that occur in other cities in America, prompting the talk of taking Producer Aaron on the James T. Harris Hood Tour. Be warned the following segment is scary and a special shoutout to the Candyman.
John and Miles discuss a few of their favorite films set in one of their favorite film cities: Chicago. In part one of this two-part series, listen as they talk about the horror film Candyman (1992) and Michael Mann's crime thriller Thief (1981). What will they talk about next? Stay tuned.
From 1968 through the early 1980s, thousands of fires raged through the Bronx. The precise number is unknown and it's uncertain who was responsible for setting them. But at the time, most fingers pointed to the working-class Black and Puerto Rican tenants who lived in the borough. The newspapers said as much, as did the Blaxploitation movies of the late 1970s. Politicians, too: in the words of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, “People don't want housing in the South Bronx, or they wouldn't burn it down.” The Bronxites who lived that history, however, have long identified a different culprit, and over the past decade, historians have arrived at a new explanation for the arsons. Bench Ansfield's new book, Born in Flames: The Business of Arson and the Remaking of the American City, is unequivocal: “The hand that torched the Bronx and scores of other cities was that of a landlord impelled by the market and guided by the state.” The story that unfolds is one of fire and a new FIRE economy, insurance and disinvestment, profit and privatization.Go beyond the episode:Bench Ansfield's Born in Flames: The Business of Arson and the Remaking of the American CityWatch Decade of Fire, Vivian Vázquez Irizarry's 2018 documentary, and Born in Flames (1993) from which Ansfield's book takes its titleFor a film on the pathologization of public housing, there's no better place to start than Candyman (1992)Across the Hudson, Hoboken was burning, tooTune in every (other) week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. In Houston, from 1970 to 1973, Dean Arnold Corll raped, tortured and murdered a minimum of twenty-eight teenage boys. He was known as the Candy Man. The full story has never been told until now. Investigative reporter Lise Olsen has uncovered new information about the killer and his victims. Her new book is The Scientist and the Serial Killer: The Search for Houston's Lost Boys.
We've received a LOT of requests to cover this one over the years. Directed by F/X mogul Robert Kurtzman and produced by Wes Craven, this late 90s gem features a TON of 80s Horror Icons. Anyone who wanted an 'Expendables" version of Horror actors need look no further. This is what you want. Very few movies from this era had so many great practical effects. The Gore is superb. The Djinn was a fantastic new villain for the time, played by a deliciously charismatic Andrew Divoff. We hope you enjoy our Horror 101 Treatment of Wishmaster. Timestamp to skip intro chat: (2:15) In the early 1970's, 42 boys vanished from the Houston Heights area of Texas. Dean Corll lived in the area and worked for the family company, Corll Candy Company. In 1970, he began a three-year killing spree, along with his accomplices David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley. All of their victims were males, aged between 13-20. The three men tortured and abused their victims before viciously murdering them. Their rampage ended in 1973 when Elmer killed Dean following an altercation. He called police and said "Y'all better come here right now! I just killed a man!" Dean, Elmer and David have been conclusively linked to 29 murders. The dog days of August are upon us.. but hopefully this week's Deadpod can see us through.. this is a good one from August 5, 1979 in Oakland. The first set certainly starts out rather laid back and so is perhaps fitting for the time... check out the transition from 'Franklin's' into 'Me & My Uncle'.. The set is well played in my opinion and the recording is good - I will tell you there is a brutal cut at the end of the 'Althea' .. ouch .. the transition from 'Lost Sailor' into 'Althea' is sweet however..
