Zach sits down with Mike and Kim Anderson, coaches and founders of Blended Family Breakthrough https://www.blendedfamilybreakthrough.com/ , to talk about one of the hardest relationship challenges couples face, making a blended family work. After marrying in 2001, Mike and Kim found themselves struggling to balance parenting roles, discipline, and loyalty in a home that combined Kim's daughter from a previous marriage with their two biological children. What began as love quickly became a crash course in blended family dynamics, emotional triggers, and communication breakdowns. Now, through their coaching practice and podcast, they help other couples avoid the painful mistakes they made. They share key principles like “connection before correction,” learning how to define shared values, and understanding the emotional traps that can divide couples, like the trapped teammate and stranded stranger dynamics. This episode offers a roadmap for couples trying to bring unity, clarity, and compassion to blended family life. Connection before correction - Step-parents should focus on building trust and emotional connection before taking on discipline. Parent from partnership - Couples must agree on shared values and expectations before implementing household rules. The “trapped teammate” dynamic - Bio parents often feel torn between loyalty to their child and loyalty to their spouse. The “stranded stranger” dynamic - Step-parents may feel like outsiders in their own home when bonds between bio parent and child are strong. Define shared values clearly - The same word (like “respect”) can mean different things to each partner; clarity prevents conflict. Bio parents lead discipline - Children accept correction better when it comes from the parent they already trust. Hope is part of the process - Healing and harmony take time, but strong remarriages can model healthy relationships for the next generation. Founders of Blended Family Breakthrough https://www.blendedfamilybreakthrough.com/ , Mike and Kim are coaches, authors, and hosts of the Blended Family Breakthrough Podcast https://www.blendedfamilybreakthrough.com/podcast. Drawing from their own challenges and victories, they help couples strengthen their marriages, unite as parents, and build thriving blended families. Turning Awkward Into Empowering: Equipping Our Kids with a Biblical Understanding of Sexuality and Gender

    Gospel Spice

Stephanie welcomes Elizabeth Urbanowitz to discuss how we can equip our children with a biblical understanding of sexuality and gender. Discover the tools you need to disciple your child with purpose and grace! Helping Your Kids Know God's Good Design is a thoughtful, timely, and practical resource that will coach you through some of the most foundational conversations you can have with your children. It's more crucial than ever to talk with our children about God's design for sexuality and gender. As our culture's understanding of human identity shifts, Christian parents, grandparents, and mentors are called to be the primary voices shaping the next generation's worldview on these sensitive topics. Ten years ago, few would have imagined discussing sexuality or gender identity with young children. However, today's culture often defines people by their desires and feelings, leading to confusion over what it means to be human. The Christian response is to provide clarity rooted in God's Word—especially around key biblical themes such as being made in God's image (Psalm 139) and understanding redemption through Christ. Elizabeth Urbanowitz emphasizes starting conversations on sexuality and gender with children as young as four or five years old. The earlier parents introduce these topics, the more their children see them as trustworthy “experts” (she calls this the “Founder's Effect”). Just as a child memorizes basic math facts before tackling algebra, simple biblical truths learned early become anchors for discerning truth from cultural messages later in life. Children encounter issues like sexual abuse, pornography, and gender confusion younger than ever. Even adults without children are likely to influence young people as teachers, mentors, or relatives. It's essential to have clear, simple language to explain: Bodies are valuable and designed by God. Private parts deserve protection and privacy. If children disclose uncomfortable experiences, adults should listen, seek understanding, and reinforce these truths with compassion. Elizabeth draws everything back to scripture. The Bible presents God as our Designer, and His design (for our bodies, marriage, sexuality) is the wise and loving blueprint for human flourishing. When addressing hard questions—like same-sex marriage, gender identity, or masturbation—parents are encouraged to reference what God has revealed, not just their opinions. To help children remember key truths, parents can teach simple catechism-like phrases. For example, “Marriage is one man and one woman becoming one flesh for life,” or “God designed us as male or female—God's design is good.” These become invaluable tools when children are confronted with cultural lies. A major point is that kindness doesn't mean agreement. Being compassionate means loving others and telling the truth (not just making them feel good). Children should be taught to respect and care for everyone, including those living differently, without affirming what's unbiblical. For parents of older children or teens, start with prayer, then listen to what they've already learned. Acknowledge any shortcomings, gently offer biblical truths, and focus on building a trusting, ongoing dialogue. God's Word is sufficient for every generation. Parents, family members, and the faith community play vital roles in helping kids navigate a confusing world. Start early, speak simply, root everything in scripture, and model truth with kindness and courage. Take time this week to consider what “building a biblical foundation” practically looks like for the children in your life. What is one conversation you can start, or one phrase you can teach, to prepare them for these challenging but crucial topics? MORE ABOUT “HELPING YOUR KIDS KNOW GOD'S GOOD DESIGN” Discipling Your Child One Conversation at a Time In today's pervasively secular culture, it's more essential than ever to guide your children toward a biblical worldview on all issues―including the complex topics of sexuality and gender. But as a parent, how do you have these discussions in an informed, age-appropriate, and Christ-centered way?  This how-to handbook equips you to talk about sex, gender, and the Bible with children between the ages of 4 and 12 with confidence and nuance. Inside you'll find biblically grounded answers to some of Christian parents' most common questions, including When should I first have the sex talk with my child? How do I explain sexual sin to my child? How do I teach my child to love others without affirming another person's sin? How do I talk with my child about what the Bible teaches about same-sex relationships? How do I handle the fear that I'll have these conversations the wrong way? Discover the tools you need to disciple your child with purpose and grace! Helping Your Kids Know God's Good Design is a thoughtful, timely, and practical resource that will coach you through some of the most foundational conversations you can have with your children. MORE ABOUT ELIZABETH URBANOWITZ Elizabeth Urbanowicz is a follower of Jesus Christ who is passionate about equipping kids to understand the truth of the Christian worldview. She holds a B.S. from Gordon College in Elementary Education and Spanish, an M.S.Ed. from Northern Illinois University in Literacy Education, and an M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Elizabeth began her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school. Several years into her teaching experience, Elizabeth realized that despite being raised in Christian homes, attending a Christian school, and being active in church, her students thought more like the culture than like Christ. Elizabeth began searching for curricular materials that would equip her students to think critically, helping them discover that Christianity is the worldview that lines up with reality. After not finding any materials that met this need, she began creating a curriculum for her students. Elizabeth first taught Foundation Comparative Worldview Curriculum as an after-school class for third through fifth graders, and the results were incredible! Students were transformed from passive recipients of information to active evaluators of every message they receive. Parents and teachers alike noticed the impact these materials had on students' media consumption, academic achievement, and everyday habits. This transformation lasted beyond the elementary years and guided students' thinking in junior high and beyond. Elizabeth now works full-time on developing comparative worldview and apologetics resources for children. Her goal is to prepare the next generation to be lifelong critical thinkers and, most importantly, lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ. https://foundationworldview.com/about/meet-the-founder  We invite you to check out the first episode of each of our series, and decide which one you will want to start with. Dr. Hoffman is also a member of the Scientific Policy Committee of the American College of Pediatricians. He has recently revised an important report titled Marijuana Use: Detrimental to Youth. A recent press release spoke of an "American College of Surgeons report revealing that over 40% of deceased drivers in motor vehicle crashes over the past six years tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana." This alarming statistic underscores a persistent and growing public health crisis. While this study does not specifically indicate the ages of the drivers, previous evidence shows that young adults are disproportionately prone to risky or impaired driving behaviors, particularly when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. While there are claims that marijuana is harmless, there are also many adverse effects that not only impact the user, but also children are being impacted as well.

Dive into the Magical World of Children's Books: Snoodles, Imagination, and Creative Storytelling Get ready for an exciting journey through the vibrant world of children's literature! In this episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty takes listeners on a delightful adventure with two incredible author-illustrator teams who are redefining storytelling for young readers. First up, Steven Joseph and Andy Case join the show to talk about their latest book, "Snoodles in Space: Escape from Zoodletraz." This wild and imaginative series follows the hilarious adventures of noodle-powered characters in a universe that's bursting with creativity. What makes their collaboration special is the incredible synergy between Joseph's witty writing and Case's detailed, playful illustrations. They've created a world where everyday objects become extraordinary, and each book adds new layers of excitement and humor. But the fun doesn't stop there! Bex Tobin Fine brings her own magical perspective with "Floor It," a charming picture book that explores a baby's incredible imagination. Through her eyes, a living room transforms into a vast landscape of adventure, with chair legs becoming forests and spilled water turning into lakes. Tobin Fine's approach reminds us how children see the world - with wonder, excitement, and endless possibility. Both creative teams showcase the power of collaboration in children's publishing. They break down traditional barriers between authors and illustrators, creating richer, more engaging stories that spark children's imaginations. ⚠️ Advisory: This episode includes discussion of child abuse and family trauma.Welcome to this week's episode of Fostering Change, where host Rob Scheer speaks with Susan Chesnutt — a family law attorney, child welfare advocate, and former foster youth based in Vero Beach, Florida.Susan's journey is one of resilience and purpose. After growing up in the foster care system, she became a child abuse investigator for Florida's Department of Children and Families (DCF), then earned her law degree and founded The Chesnutt Law Firm, focusing exclusively on child welfare and family law. She also hosts the podcast From Foster Care to Family Law: A Child Welfare Focus, where she and her guests unpack the toughest issues facing families today. In this powerful conversation, Rob and Susan explore:✅ Lived experience as a foundation for advocacy.“I know what it's like to feel powerless in a system that's supposed to protect you. That's why I fight so hard to make sure every child—and every parent—has a voice.”✅ What really happens inside a DCF investigation.Susan breaks down the process from the inside, reminding families that “you have rights, even when it feels like you don't.”✅ Why empathy matters in family law.Her trauma-informed approach prioritizes safety, healing, and understanding over blame.✅ A call for systemic change.“We can't fix the child welfare system until we start valuing families instead of labeling them. Real reform begins with compassion.”Susan's unique perspective—combining lived experience, government service, and legal advocacy—shows how justice and empathy must go hand in hand.

In this episode of The Pulling Curls Podcast, hosts Hilary Erickson and Dr. Janene Fuerch, a neonatologist at Stanford, dive into what every pregnant family should know about the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). They discuss why it's important to understand NICU basics—even if you're planning a smooth delivery—and share practical tips on how to cope if your baby needs extra care, including ways to stay connected, manage stress, and support bonding. The episode also highlights exciting innovations aimed at making NICU stays safer and more comfortable for babies and families, plus insights on hospital levels and advocacy for neonatal advancements.   Big thanks to our sponsor Laborie -- LifeBubble® Umbilical Catheter Securement System LifeBubble is made of a Soft Medical Grade Silicone to minimize skin irritation, Reduces the Risk of Catheter Migration and Early Discontinuation, and Protects the Insertion Site of our most vulnerable patients. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine, Associate Director of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Program at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Impact1 where she mentors and advises entrepreneurs in the pediatric and maternal space through all aspects of medical device development, from identifying clinical needs to commercialization. The NICU can range from having just a couple of extra staff in the delivery room to having 15 people if a baby needs help, making the birth experience much more intense and involved. Planning ahead with your partner about who will go with the baby in case of separation can help make a stressful situation a little easier. About 10% of babies need some help breathing at birth, but most recover quickly; only a small percentage require NICU care beyond the basic interventions. NICUs are graded by levels (I-IV), and knowing what level your hospital offers can help families prepare—higher-level NICUs can treat more complex issues but aren't always necessary for uncomplicated births. If your hospital isn't a level III or IV, babies needing higher-level care may need to be transferred, which could mean temporary separation from parents; hospitals always work to reunite families as quickly as possible. NICU nurses are passionate, skilled, and deeply care about the babies and their families, creating a loving and safe environment even during stressful times. Parents can support their recovery and milk production by getting rest and using NICU technologies (like webcams) to stay connected—it's okay to take breaks and trust the NICU staff. Emerging technologies like Labry's Life Bubble are making NICU stays safer and more comfortable, allowing parents to hold their babies even when special catheters are in place. Skin-to-skin contact in the NICU is highly beneficial for both babies and parents, helping with bonding, milk production, and even neurodevelopment; parents are encouraged to ask staff about timing and any concerns about wires or tubes. Contributor: Taylor Lynch, MD Educational Pearls: A recent study published in a pediatric journal in April 2025 compared temporal and oral thermometers Paired temperature measurements (temporal and oral temperature within 30 minutes) were obtained from 1,412 pediatric patients 26% of patients had statistically different temporal and oral temperatures The temporal reading was always lower than the oral reading Children less than 12 years old were 2-3x more likely to actually have that statistical difference in temperatures The study also evaluated 1,000 adult patients 36% had a temporal temperature that was 0.5 degrees Celsius lower than the oral temperature Reasons for the statistical difference between the two types of thermometers: Environment: temporal thermometers are affected by ambient room temperature, diaphoresis, and inaccuracy in measuring temperature at the site of the temporal artery Physiologic: a patient with inadequate perfusion will not have an accurate temporal reading Impact: Obtaining an accurate temperature is crucial in patient care For example, in the setting of sepsis, temperature is a necessary component to identifying when a patient meets SIRS criteria References Salhi RA, Meeker MA, Williams C, Iwashyna TJ, Samuels-Kalow ME. In this episode, Michael sits down with Kym to talk about how businesses can not only survive but thrive with artificial intelligence. After her company lost 80% of its revenue due to executive orders, Kym led a bold pivot into AI. She shares how her team automated workflows, cut costs, and freed up resources to launch new ventures. Michael points out why this kind of hands-on experience sets her apart in guiding other organizations through AI transformation. Why Strategy Matters Did you know that 95% of AI implementations fail? Michael and Kym dig into the reasons why. Too many organizations jump in without understanding their current systems, creating more chaos instead of solutions. The two stress the importance of starting with an AI audit—identifying inefficiencies and revenue leaks—before ever choosing a tool. AI and Organizational Insight Michael and Kym highlight the gap between executive views and front-line experiences. By listening to employees who work closest to the systems, leaders can uncover real bottlenecks and opportunities. They argue that AI should enhance processes, not replace people, and that smart adaptation to current economic conditions matters more than long-term guesswork. Addressing Employee Concerns Kym addresses the fear of AI taking jobs. Instead, she frames AI as a companion—augmenting employees' abilities and giving them space for creativity and productivity. Michael adds that when used wisely, AI helps businesses find new growth opportunities and sharpen their focus. Both stress the importance of thoughtful planning, privacy safeguards, and data responsibility. Technology's Broader Impact The conversation also explores how innovations like predictive analytics are already woven into everyday life, from mortgages to personalized ads. Michael emphasizes using technology to increase efficiency and create meaningful work, while also recognizing the ongoing debates around privacy and data use. Skills That Transfer Kym also shares how her background in nursing shaped her approach to consulting, underscoring the power of transferable skills. She encourages listeners to examine their own roles, projects, and metrics for growth opportunities. Michael closes by highlighting Kym's expertise and her commitment to helping businesses and communities adapt to an AI-driven world. About Kym Ali Kym Ali is an award-winning Registered Nurse, dynamic speaker, and CEO of Kym Ali Consulting, a boutique firm specializing in leadership development, workplace wellness, coaching, and AI-driven solutions for modern leaders. Before we can negotiate with others, we must first learn to negotiate with ourselves — to balance our inner voices, our fears, and our dreams. Imagine if children were taught early on to recognize their emotions, to pause before reacting, and to choose compassion over self-criticism. How different might their futures be? In a world that often rushes them to grow up too fast, teaching children to understand and value themselves may be one of the most powerful life lessons we can offer.    In this episode, Cindy Watson sits down with the inspiring Armida Espinoza to explore “Teaching Our Children To Negotiate With Themselves.” Armida, a first-generation Mexican American and retired bilingual teacher, has dedicated her life to empowering young minds. As an author and advocate for children's emotional and cognitive development, she brings a powerful message about nurturing self-awareness, confidence, and inner dialogue from an early age. Through her work, Armida encourages children to find their voice, recognize their worth, and understand that no matter their age, they have the power to make a meaningful impact in the world.   This conversation with Armida Espinoza reminds us that self-negotiation isn't just a skill — it's a foundation for resilience, empathy, and authentic confidence.   In this episode, you will learn:   Why it's critical to start learning at a very young age. How can parents or educators support kids in developing their skills? How does the book help children negotiate with fears and uncertainties when they are faced with unfamiliar experiences or environments to learn new things. How can hope be a part of a child's internal negotiation process. How to recognize which voice to listen to. How to negotiate your own inner critic. And many more!   Learn more about Armida: Website: https://www.armidaespinoza.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/armiespinoza/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ArmidaEspinozaAuthor/   Get her book! He works closely with settings to support their use of Tapestry and believes tech is only successful if you bring staff with you. As a teacher Ben regularly presented at TeachMeet Sussex and he now helps to host the Tapestry podcast, writes for education publications, and features in many of the Tapestry training videos to support users. He is keen to share actionable insights and foster a positive, confident approach to using technology effectively in early years settings across the UK.Tapestry's annual survey had some interesting findings around the use of AI in the early years; engaging with families; and supporting families with ideas for play at home.More info about the survey: https://tapestry.info/tapestry-early-years-education-survey-2025-what-we-learnt/Tapestry has teamed up with award-winning Playworker Amber – aka Amber Ogunsanya-William – to collaborate on a project championing children's freedom to play. The animation shares Amber's story, and highlights provocations for play at home.https://tapestry.info/let-play-lead-the-day/Takeaways: The importance of centering the child in educational processes cannot be overstated, as their home experiences significantly influence their learning in school. Tapestry facilitates effective two-way communication between educators and parents, enhancing the overall educational experience for children. As AI tools become increasingly prevalent, it is essential to teach children to critically assess the authenticity of the media they encounter. Engaging parents in their child's learning journey is vital, as it fosters a deeper understanding of child development beyond mere participation in school events. The integration of play in education is crucial, enabling children to develop problem-solving skills while maintaining engagement in their learning. AI can be a valuable resource in lesson planning and child activity suggestions, but it should support, rather than replace, the educator's role. https://tapestry.info/https://www.instagram.com/tapestry_fsf/https://www.facebook.com/TapestryLearningJournalhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/eyfsben/Show Sponsor – National Association for Primary Education (NAPE)https://nape.org.uk/Find out more about their Primary First Journal: https://www.educationonfire.com/nape

Money and marriage—two things God designed to bless us, but they can also be two of the greatest sources of stress. What if we turned financial conflict into connection?Dr. Shane Enete joins us today to share six creative ways couples can build stronger relationships by having intentional financial conversations—what he calls “money dates.”Dr. Shane Enete is an Associate Professor of Finance at Biola University and founded the Biola Center for Financial Planning. He is also the author of the book Whole Heart Finances: A Jesus-Centered Guide to Managing Your Money with Joy.Why You Need to Talk About Money—IntentionallyMany couples avoid conversations about money out of fear. A study of 2,000 couples found that half of them were uncomfortable discussing money because they worried it would lead to conflict. The irony is that by avoiding those talks, the conflict only deepens. On average, couples argue about money 58 times a year. But what if, instead of waiting for issues to flare up, you set aside regular time to talk about your finances together—proactively and prayerfully? That's the heart behind the idea of money dates. You might have to rip off the bandage at first, but we want to help couples make these conversations not just necessary—but enjoyable.Turning Financial Talks Into DatesThese aren't meant for finger-pointing but for course correction—a time to realign your financial goals with your values. But also, why not make it a date? Dating can be a lot of fun if you're intentional. So why not combine something enjoyable with something that's often uncomfortable? When you connect in a fun environment, even money talk becomes more meaningful. The key is consistency. Whether it's over dinner, coffee, or a quiet walk, having a regular rhythm of financial connection helps you stay on the same page as a couple—and deepens your trust.Money Date #1: Share Your Money StoryEvery person brings a financial backstory into marriage—habits, fears, and attitudes shaped by family and early experiences.Think of it as your money autobiography. Reflect on what you learned about money growing up, what messages you received from your parents, and how those experiences influence your decisions today.Take your spouse out for dinner and share those stories. You'll gain empathy and understanding for each other's perspectives. When you know your partner's money story, their spending or saving habits make a lot more sense.Try this: Ask each other, “What's your earliest memory of money?” The answers may surprise you—and bring you closer.Money Date #2: Give TogetherGenerosity is one of the most unifying acts a couple can experience. Here are a few ways to make generosity a shared journey:Set a giving goal. Track your progress as a family and celebrate milestones together.Join a giving circle. Partner with friends or your small group to pool resources for a cause you all care about.Create a stretch goal. As your income grows, commit to increasing your giving percentage over time. These conversations shift the focus from money as a source of stress to money as a means of Kingdom impact.Money Date #3: Cook the BooksThis one's both literal and figurative! Instead of going out, stay home and cook a meal together—or grab takeout for a picnic. Use the relaxed environment to talk about your budget rhythm:Who tracks expenses? What budgeting tools or apps will you use?How often will you review spending? The FaithFi app can help simplify this process. It lets couples track giving, spending, and saving all in one place—while keeping biblical wisdom at the center.Money Date #4: Check Your Credit (at the Spa!)Debt can carry emotional weight, so create a peaceful setting for this conversation. A spa day is perfect. It's relaxing—and you can often find affordable day passes. While you unwind, discuss:How much debt do you currently carry? How did your family handle debt growing up?What boundaries would you like to establish regarding credit use? This isn't about blame. It's about caring for each other and agreeing on a plan that both of you believe in.Money Date #5: Number Your DaysThis one takes its inspiration from Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”Couples should view estate planning as an act of love. When you prepare a will, name a guardian, or establish a power of attorney, you're doing something deeply selfless—caring for others even after you're gone.Spend a date identifying:Who will serve as executor or guardian for your children? How do you want your assets used to bless others? What legacy of faith and generosity do you want to leave behind?Growing Together Through Financial StewardshipMoney dates are about far more than numbers. They're about connection, empathy, and shared purpose. When couples talk about money in ways that honor God and each other, they grow in wisdom—and unity. When you come together around money with openness and grace, you draw closer not just to each other, but to the heart of God.———————————————————————————————————————Dr. Enete's full article, “Six Great Money Dates,” appears in the latest issue of Faithful Steward magazine—available to all FaithFi Partners. When you become a FaithFi Partner with a monthly gift of $35 (or $400 annually), you'll receive Faithful Steward magazine and other exclusive resources to help you grow as a faithful steward. I've managed to save about $42,000 in a separate account, but now I'd like to start investing that money for his future. I want something safe and low-risk—something that will be there for him when he needs it. What would you recommend? My 27-year-old daughter has a traditional 401(k) from her previous job here in the U.S., but she's now working overseas. She's planning to roll her 401(k) into an IRA with Fidelity. Since she's still young and making this move, would this be a good time to consider one of those backdoor Roth conversions you've discussed before?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000.
