Thanks to our Partners, NAPA TRACS, and Today's Class Recorded at Vision Hi-Tech Training & Expo 2025, two attendees of a communications class, led by Chris Cloutier and Craig O'Neill, were chosen as the top speakers during a Toastmasters style mock run-through. Their heartfelt and authentic stories resonated so strongly with the audience that they were invited to share their experiences on the podcast. What began as a simple role-play exercise turned into a powerful conversation about the role of communication and relationship building in the automotive shop industry. Our guests reflect on the value of active listening, vulnerability, storytelling, and how these traits fuel strong leadership and team culture in repair shops. This episode is a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful moments are unplanned, and communication is at the heart of every successful business. (Fun Fact - The course title, inspired in co-operation with Chris Cloutier, pre-dated this podcast!)Working through his nerves, Drew gave his first ever speech to a room of 80 people. His speech stood out because he shared a story about personal triumph over adversity after being told by doctors, due to a condition, that his left arm would never be useful. Yet, Drew functioned for years as a heavy-repair specialist prior to his current role as a Service manager. In this episode Drew describes what it was like at VISION this year, and how his participation on stage in the Speak Up course set the stage for his time at VISION. As a first time speaker - we get to hear about his perspective of the audience - things he wished he remembered to say - and here in our conversation we created an opportunity to share a point from his speech which made his title even more memorable, as it punctuates the primary mission for this show; improving the image of our industry by becoming better communicators.Todays Word of the Day:gumption: nounshrewd or spirited initiative and resourcefulness."Drew had the gumption to fund his own trip to VISION!"Book Recommendation mentioned in this episode:Millers Bolt by Thomas StirrThank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:The Institute at WeAreTheInstitute.com. Why is adapting to technology important? Look around you. Keeping up with the latest technology is key to any successful enterprise. It is a requirement today. It increases flexibility, streamlines operations, and helps you adjust your forward progress. I'm with Chris Cloutier and Craig ONeill at ASTE 2022, and we discuss the four ‘Ts' … technology, touch, trust, and transparency. The inspiration for this episode stemmed from Tracy receiving a video from an orthodontist's office and how it can be easily implemented in our industry.  Chris Cloutier is co-owner of https://www.goldenruleautocare.com/ (Golden Rule Auto Care) in Dallas Texas and CEO of https://autotext.me/ (Auto Tex Me). Listen to Chris's previous episodes https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22chris+cloutier%22 (HERE.)  Key Talking Points  Managing Change class- changes are constant,  “Change or Die” relate, repeat, refrain  Who are you hanging out with if you want to change? “I want to lose weight with diet and exercise” but do you have a trainer? https://remarkableresults.biz/remarkable-results-radio-podcast/e717/ (Ego is the Enemy Episode 717)- fine line between confidence and hubris  Software- managing the change of the shop, “adoption of a new process,” technology improves the process but doesn't fix the problem if you don't have a process “Who Not How”  It takes 66 days to create a habit  Failure isn't final, do you have grit? “Split the difference” is positive Takes a few months to create a habit- repeating excellence is hard “Eternal optimists with the glass half full” while battling with “pessimistic and glass half empty” “You can only apologize and blow off steam so many times before it becomes yourself” Are you a wartime CEO or peacetime CEO? Startup life- being the visionary and integrator at the same time Are you showing your children your failures/struggles? Eliminate preconceived notions you're “not good at that” before you've tried Instead of change or die, it should be change and thrive Are you afraid to stretch yourself because you don't know something? Freedom to jump to conclusions and do what you want to do.   What did you want to grow up and be?Entrepreneur- make and build things  What impact will technology have on your business?Massive impact- constantly adding and changing in order to maintain successful customer experience and a productive and effective shop. If using technology is confuses and doesn’t work for them they are using the wrong technology What new technology are you going to add to your business in the next 6 months?“Baywatch” watching vehicles in real time ALPR (advanced license plate reader) and object recognition- measuring efficiency and productivity in the bays  What are you afraid of?Failure- “Failure is a part of success” but failure is still hard to handle. Sometimes you are afraid to make a choice because you’re afraid of what could happen as an outcome. Failure can happen due to factors you’re not in control of (COVID-19).   What do you do for fun?Spending time with family (2 daughters and wife). Activities together like ice skating, kicking soccer balls, skiing etc.  What is a big concern or threat to your business?Consolidation- driving and driverless fleets. Who will be repairing those vehicles? Who has nationwide coverage? How do you manage work/life harmony?Discipline to “turn it off” certain evenings and on Sunday’s- limited phone and computer use  What did you sacrifice in the early days to get where you are today? Regret it?Sacrificed friendships and relationships- it’s easy to pour yourself into work and neglect certain friendships. Chris doesn’t have regret because they were tradeoffs to pursue what he wanted to do.     Do you have a strong intuition? Do you listen to it? Has always followed his gut while knowing “the numbers.” Trusts his intuition and listens to it. During COVID his gut told him to inform his employees what was going on- potential layoffs, potential salary cuts etc. Employees were grateful he was honest and upfront.   Get any great advice that you still follow today?Advice from his father:“If you’re going to lie with the dogs you’re going to get fleas.” It serves as a reminder to surround yourself with good people.  How does one start to build a strong business culture?Starts with the leader- What are your strengths? What are you good at? What do you like? Find things you care about and your employees will see it. Don’t force “fun,” be genuine with your interests and the interests of your employees.   We learn from mistakes. What was one of your biggest mistakes? Not realizing his path early on in life- we often fight our paths but that’s when you have to listen to your intuition.  Wanted to make it big in music and failed but learned how to manage people/business during that time.   Ever had a mentor?Dad was first mentor Read “How to win friends and influence people” and it changed the course of his life.  Continues to have mentors, 20 groups and advisors “Feedback is a gift like on Christmas morning. Hear Chris’s previous episodes  (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22chris+cloutier%22)    Jay Mikulovich is the founder and CEO of Revival Technology LLC. Technology has been a passion in Jay’s life from early childhood, all started by taking electronics apart and developed into coding and programming. After graduating university with degrees in computer science and business administration Jay, fueled by his entrepreneurial spirit, formed Revival Technology in 2006. He strongly believes when knowledge meets passion then there are no limits on what you can achieve. For as of technology being a part of the knowledge Jay looks at it as a tool that can revive businesses and bring them to the new level of success. Hear Jayy’s previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22jay+mikulovich%22) Key talking Points: Cybersecurity- has to be dealt with at a small business level, not just big businesses   Policies and procedures in place to protect software, hardware, customer data, credit card data and vehicle data, contacts, even certain keyboards can be recorded  Make sure you have segmented networks- customer network, main network, wireless device network (different lanes)   Encrypted https “packets”  Passwords- do not reuse the same passwords, every service needs a unique and different password. Mix of 13 different characters, not only 8. 8 character passwords can be hacked within an hour. If you use the same password over and over again then hackers will try to use it for multiple accounts. Browsers will also save passwords but it is not encrypted. Use professional encrypted software to manage your passwords.   All of your computers should have virus protections with regular updates  Opening random pdf’s and attachments in emails that look suspicious can be a virus. Educate and train your employees about ‘click bait.’ Are you expecting this email? Are you expecting this attachment? Email will often be worded to be very urgent.  Your verizon/switch/ISP firewall is not going to be enough to protect business.  As a business, if you get hacked, it is required by law to report it  Get cybersecurity insurance  Ransomware- cyber hackers want money in order to ‘remove’ ransomware or get data back$20,000 ransom for getting data back is considered cheap  If data is cloud based it’ll cost you time and some money to reinstall software but if a car gets infected with ransomware (example brakes don’t work anymore) then the customer cannot drive it and it won't be a simple fix. Key Talking Points: Necessary changes to our Industry terminology because of the profession we’ve become We use too many industry terms with our customers such as work order instead of invoice Business Owner - IN vs Shop Owner - OUT Anyone can own a shop, but it takes a certain person to own a business and be a leader. There is also a difference between entrepreneurs and business owners- chasing a dream and ideas vs looking at numbers in business and building people within a business. Work on your business instead of in your business The business owner should elevate to a CEO - Chief Executive Officer Going from a Trade -OUT to a Profession - IN.A change in mindset and discipline to be focused on making net profit.    Client strategic business - IN vs Customer-based business - OUT You have a responsibility for clients and have earned trust. Customers come and go. What makes you unique and different? Your value proposition What do you bring to the table that others do not? You don’t sell clients. You council them. Relationships build trust Council not sell- understand vehicle and client.  Changing your mindset using language. If you think of yourself as a CEO vs an owner will change how you approach things as a leaderCEO- IN vs Shop Owner - OUT Service Consultant/Advisor - IN vs Counter salesperson/writer - OUTRelationships built trust Technician- IN vs Mechanic -OUT Invoice - IN vs Work order - OUT    The terminology of business software. Acronyms SMS shop management system, DMS (dealer management system) vs POS (point of sale system) Development - IN vs Training - OUTDevelopment classes scheduled for the next year for entire team Attracting younger generation- skill level continues to elevate with the amount of technology within vehicles    Business cards for your team members should include their certifications or professional accreditations Change starts with the owner- set expectations and defines the language used within the business You have to understand your people, how to communicate, motivate, and train.  Are you training and developing your technician? Are they certified? Continue to develop your knowledge Every team member should have a business card with certifications Instructors - IN vs Trainers - OUT - instructors have done research priorAnswer all questions Have a thorough investment with their time...

This week on the OTCBPodcast we welcome in, Inspector Cloutier for another edition of 20 in 20. Chris Cloutier has a knack for lighting the lamp and scoring some real timely goals. Case in point the 9 goals he had vs Loyola in the NCAA tournament, or the OT winner vs Maryland to give UNC their first title since 1991! However, his rookie season in the NLL was a bumpy one and he only lasted 7 games in Philadelphia before he was traded to the Bandits. "Fit and Fitness" were deemed two of the reasons the trade was made- Cloutier agrees and disagrees with that sentiment. Since he's arrived in Banditland he's back to his old self, scoring ridiculous goals and playing with all the confidence in the world. It's another great chat full of laughs and stories about a career in lacrosse that's taken him all across North America. So enjoy 20 (or so) questions with Chris Cloutier on this week's OTCBPodcast.

Advertising for independents Start with educating customers: Show around the shop and tell them what you have to offer and capable of Grow with technology and show customers: Tablets for techs, digital inspections texted to phones An advertising idea: ‘We Get High on High Tech’ You connect your phone to your car. This show sold out last year, so get your tickets sooner than later. There are 2 performances - 3pm and 6pm. Then Matt Cord & Kristen Herrmann speak with Anthony Joaquim and Chris Cloutier, players on the new Philadelphia Wings team. The WINGS season home opener vs. the Buffalo Bandits is this Saturday, December 15th at the Wells Fargo Center. There are a limited number of $18 tickets available at WINGSLAX.com. And while you’re there, keep an eye out for Wingston, the new mascot for the Wings! Unfortunately, the show wraps on a sour note. Foul even. The Grinch himself stops by to talk with Matt & Kristen about his upcoming show at the Merriam Theater. ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ is a musical, and it’s all about him… the Grinch. Just in time for Christmas, and running December 19-29th, tickets are available at KimmelCenter.org. While the Grinch was surprisingly nice to interview, even so… the three words that best describe him are as follows, and we quote,"Stink, stank, stunk"! The show will be great though.

In this week's Innovate podcast, Chris Cloutier, shop technology expert and owner of Golden Rule Auto Care, joins the show to discuss the timeline of a shop's technology.  Cloutier created his own site to go over this topic, and he walks through the timeline's three stages, including where your shop is now, and where it can be. The further along on the timeline you are, Cloutier says, the more efficient and productive your shop can be. Stage One (3:26): Stage one covers the vast majority of today's shops. This is the inescapable technology, like your shop's website, or online reviews.  Stage Two (10:10): Shops in stage two know they need to embrace technology, and leverage it in their day-to-day operations. These shops have already embraced software like automated workflow, or digital vehicle inspections.  Stage Three (30:04): These shops are in what Cloutier calls the advanced category, and are the 1 percent. These early adopters may have already included cloud based SMS software, or telematics into their daily operations.

Pain. Required to do it because everyone else is. Vision. New, innovative, pioneer to try something different. Changes to operations and processes are digital inspections. Fear of losing control of the sale. We are moving away from a sales society to a consumer buying driven society. Moving to completely digital you can save on payroll, meet demands of the customer. Fear change. Unsure of the outcome of change, but able to adapt as change becomes more prevalent. Afraid of being incompetent after they’re already competent and comfortable on a certain way of doing things. You’re either surviving or thriving/avoiding pain or gaining pleasure. Fear of the unknown and failing at it. Fear of losing something, protecting what is yours. How do we deliver the value to the customer and not lose the control of the sale? Curse of knowledge that we cannot explain what we do. An automobile is a complex machine and we need to explain our competency to the customer at a level 2, not at a level 10 knowledge. Don’t go overboard. What do consumers want? Easy access to making an appointment without having to get a verification email or phone call. Instant online access to your workflow is necessary. We are in an ‘on-demand’ society. We will change, but we need to understand everything about it. We want to get to the end game without any pain. There are three pricing models: Amazon. Entrepreneurs are always on to the next mountain. Gary Vaynerchuk says you get a four hundred trillion chance to be alive. It is amazing what we complain about when we get such great odds to be here. You don’t have anyone to validate you. You don’t want to be the person putting out fires. Not a good choice of a good leader. You need advisors and coaches in your business to guide you and hold you accountable. Get over the fact that someone will tell you to do something. That may be exactly what you need. They will also affirm your success and give you positive guidance and direction. You need to have a superpower. Follow your gut because the numbers may not make sense. A lot of people have done great things by following their gut, however, the feeling in your gut is not magic, you need to work hard to make your gut work. Not easy if the numbers won’t work. Leaders are readers. Books are wisdom. Entrepreneurs must read a book a week at the minimum one a month. Every business person must have a business plan When you go on vacation and have no destination you will find yourself in a place you hadn’t planned.
