In this episode, your favorite doc, Dr. Jeff Buske, takes a Sunday stroll with JoJo and Freckles and dives into a topic that impacts every aspect of life and work: systems and processes. Reflecting on recent personal experiences, including a frustrating encounter with flawed healthcare systems and a missed opportunity due to a scheduling mishap, he explores how broken systems can hinder progress, create unnecessary stress, and keep us stuck in reactive cycles. Listeners will discover why systems are the foundation of smooth operations, whether in a dental practice or daily life. Dr. Buske emphasizes the difference between information and actionable knowledge, highlighting the importance of creating and implementing effective systems to avoid defaulting to the lowest setting in life. With practical wisdom and real-life anecdotes, this conversation underscores how intentional reflection and incremental improvement—just 1% better each day—can lead to phenomenal results. Key Takeaways: • The importance of reflection in identifying and fixing flawed systems. • Why implementation and accountability are more crucial than just having information. • The value of surrounding yourself with mentors and communities to reveal blind spots. • How small, consistent improvements compound into transformative outcomes. Don't miss the chance to level up! Check out the From Prisoner to Producer Masterclass, where three transformative frameworks will be revealed to help you shift from reactive to productive. This passionate focus for fitness and health opened up a whole new world of growth, not only for himself, but for others as well. David has been training full-time for twelve years now, and has enjoyed every minute of it. He's been fortunate enough to help hundreds of clients over the years, both in person and online, achieve all different types of goals. I love Myron Rolle's story, and I'm so excited for you to hear it this week. Sports fans will remember him as a college football star at Florida State and for his time playing in the NFL. But while he was excelling on the football field, he was also cultivating an eventual career as a neurosurgeon. After being recruited out of high school by just about ever major college football program in the country, Rolle attended Florida State where he became a First Team Freshman All-American, the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Rookie of the Year, and eventually a Third Team All-American. He ultimate chose Florida State because it was the place that best fit his plan to not only play football, but also become a Rhodes Scholar and study neuroscience. He was projected to be a first round draft pick after his college career was over, but that same year he was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship and the chance to study at Oxford for a year. He faced a decision — take about $9 million in a signing bonus as a first round pick and start his NFL career, or take a year away from football to follow his heart and study at Oxford on the Rhodes Scholarship. In this conversation, he discusses how he navigated that season of life and how he ultimately decided what to do. This decision, like everything else in his life, was guided by his faith in Jesus. He also details this story in his new book, The 2% Way: How a Philosophy of Small Improvements Took Me to Oxford, the NFL, and Neurosurgery. "The 2% Way" was a mantra he learned from a college coach, and he talks about how these small improvements can lead to big things. If you've ever struggled with comparison, imposter syndrome, or just a general feeling that you're moving too slow toward your goals, this conversation is for you. The Jim Galiano Show: Online Business Success Minus the Stress
I enjoy watching home improvement shows. Especially when they remodel a room completely using software to show the finished product before they build it out in real-time. Then, of course, you have the before and after photos. They're especially dramatic when they're doing a complete remodel to update an old house that needs some attention. You can apply the same mindset to rebuilding or remodeling your existing business. Instead of trying to tackle one huge project, however, you may find that it's easier to pick one thing… and make it better. And I mean – really focusing on making that “one thing” better. I'm talking about quality over quantity. I'm talking about pushing something from the average category to the above-average category (using your existing skills as the measuring stick). If you're tired of struggling with what seems to be increasingly unrealistic and unreachable goals, you're going to enjoy today's episode!Subscribe to The Jim Galiano Show: Help for Freelancers & Solopreneurs on Soundwise

"Improving by 1 percent isn't particularly notable — sometimes it isn't even noticeable — but it can be far more meaningful, especially in the long run. The difference a tiny improvement can make over time is astounding. Here's how the math works out: if you can get 1 percent better each day for one year, you'll end up thirty-seven times better by the time you're done. Conversely, if you get 1 percent worse each day for one year, you'll decline nearly down to zero. What starts as a small win or a minor setback accumulates into something much more." Do you think about daily habits at all? Do you just go with the flow and take each day as it is- winging it or do you have a set plan or a set of habits that you have adopted? Today I want to talk about habit creation that is positive and good for you- some simple ways to begin positive Mama habits! I feel like so many people talk about habits. Do this, don't do that. Do this exercise, not that one. Eat this food, not that one. Meditate or pray, or not. Write out gratitude every day. Journal every day...good grief! It can be overwhelming and tiresome to figure it all out and what you can do to improve your daily routine a little bit at a time. It can really get very overwhelming FAST! What habits have you adopted? Are they habits that enhance your life or detract from your life? Habits make a difference and they have an impact on how you look at yourself and how you feel on a daily basis.I've read a couple of books, listened to some masterclasses about tiny habits or habit stacking and basically what that means is adopting small, manageable habits one at a time and then adding on more as you are able. Additional Q&A time with Evan Graczyk and Bob Bell from Woodfin. How do you ensure leaders don't focus solely on bottom-line savings? How do you use the system to escalate problems that cannot be solved within the team itself? How do we know what is the "best" solution?? At point do you just have to test some things and see? Have you had issues with frontline staff coming up with ideas to solve a problem but management not agreeing with the idea so it does not move forward? If so, do you have any system in place to adress this issue? Note: OFI = Opportunity For Improvement

Today on episode 91, I talk about How Small Improvements can Lead to Big Growth. You'll learn: How great leaders share a philosophy of making small improvements How to improve your devotional life How to improve your daily schedule How to be the best you can be Transcript Please save the date for the Climb, Small Church Leadership Conference December 2-5 in Dallas Texas. I hope to have registration set up before the end of the month. There will be an Asian Small Church Leadership Conference the following week. That will be held virtually and we will get more information to you about that. How Small Improvements can Lead to Big Growth Since 1908, British riders had won just a single gold medal at the Olympic Games, and they had fared even worse in cycling's biggest race, the Tour de France. In 110 years, no British cyclist had ever won the event. In fact, the performance of British riders had been so underwhelming that one of the top bike manufacturers in Europe refused to sell bikes to the team because they were afraid that it would hurt sales if other professionals saw the Brits using their gear. Dave Brailsford had been hired to put British Cycling on a new trajectory. What made him different from previous coaches was his relentless commitment to a strategy that he referred to as “the aggregation of marginal gains,” which was the philosophy of searching for a tiny margin of improvement in everything you do. Brailsford said, “The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improve it by 1 percent, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together.” During the ten-year span from 2007 to 2017, British cyclists won 178 world championships and 66 Olympic or Paralympic gold medals and captured 5 Tour de France victories in what is widely regarded as the most successful run in cycling history.[1] This story reminds me that little improvements lead to big change over time. I'd like to ask you: What if you got 1% better every day? What if your marriage got 1% better every day? What if your church or ministry got 1% better every day? James Clear, who wrote “Atomic Habits,” explains that initially your improvement will hardly be noticeable, but if you were to make a small 1% improvement every day, you would be thirty-seven times better than when you started. Start Small to Go Big When you study leaders who are making a difference, business leaders, coaches, ministers or even good parents, you'll find a pattern of attention to small improvements. Read what the ten-time NCAA basketball championship winning coach, John Wooden, counsels: “You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.” Paul shares the same principle in Ephesians 5:15-16: 15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Paul tells us to be very careful about the small details of our lives. We need to examine the easy to overlook behaviors and routines that guide 90% of our lives. We need to pay attention to the small opportunities that pop up and that we often leave unexploited. We cannot be careless about the boring and seemingly insignificant details of our lives. What areas in our lives do we need to start being “very careful” with? Be Very Careful With Your Devotional Life How can you energize your walk with God? What can you do to find power and inspiration every morning that you spend with God? Do you miss days without connecting with God? Do you find yourself anxious to get started with your “real work” during your devotional time? Does your spiritual routine leave you at peace and motivated to do the work of God? If not, it's time to make a small daily improvement in the quality of your time with God. Recently, I made a few decisions to improve my time with God in the following ways: I give myself permission to take as long as I need to be close and feel close to God. I give myself permission to enjoy my relationship with God every day. I don't have to do something or accomplish something first to “earn” a satisfying relationship with God. I have decided to allow myself to be happy every day in my connection to Christ. I refuse to wait until at some undetermined time in the future my accomplishments will somehow allow me the freedom to enjoy peace in my relationship with God. These are small “tweaks” in my spiritual life, but they are powerful enough to put me into an entirely different mindset as my work day gets going. Be Very Careful With Your Daily Schedule We need to be very careful about how we spend our time. In our hyper-connected world, we can spend our days responding to the needs of other people by text, email, or social media. You cannot make your own unique contribution to this world if you only serve the requests of others. Carve out dedicated time to do the most important work that you want to do. That will mean making small improvements in limiting access to you at certain times of the day. Here are a few things that have worked for me: Use the “Freedom” app that prevents you from checking email or distracting websites for a period of time that you designate. Don't check your phone or email before your “workday” starts at 8:00 or 9:00 am. I have decided that the first thing I will do once I finish my devotional time is to write 1,000 words. I recommit to this frequently and give myself permission to put my agenda ahead of ministry problems, crises and requests for information. If I do not do this, I end up at the end of the week late on my sermon preparation, mad at myself for not doing what I considered most important and wondering where my time went and what I had to show for it. What are some other areas to examine that might be ripe for improvement? Do you have any evenings that are reserved for reaching out those who don't know God? How consistent are you in meeting with people you are mentoring? Are you making the most of daily opportunities to share your faith? Do you have new invitation cards that you can start using? Is your week scheduled in such a way to reach the lost, fellowship with disciples, build your marriage and family and have a little fun? Be the best you can be We have an opportunity as we come out into the new world of life after COVID-19. We can bemoan the condition our lives, ministries and relationships may be in or we can go to work making small improvements every day. By doing that we will in time find ourselves stronger than we ever were before the pandemic and more fruitful, happy and creative than we have ever been before. Don't compare yourself to other people, ministries or churches. You can learn from the good ideas of others, but if you obsess about how you don't have this, lacks that or can't do this, you will be a miserable, discouraged leader. Instead, focus on being the best you can be. How can you compare yourself to how you led yesterday? How can you be better than your old self? Each day, with each new improvement you will be able to enjoy the satisfaction of making a small but significant change for the better. Over time, your small changes will compound and not only will your ministry grow, but you will change as a person and as a leader. You will become a Christian who is able to bounce back from setbacks and crises because you know that small changes lead to big progress. Application Write down three small things that you could change this week that would improve your life? Truths can be discovered by many people. Everything we say is a derivative of the stuff we've learned in school or the content we've sought out and consumed. Everyone comes to their own conclusions about those experiences and those learnings. Entrepreneurs that Erik follows on Twitter almost always say the same things. It's not that they're copying one another but they've arrived at the same truths through whatever mechanisms got them to that point. — Erik J. If you are not different (and sometimes even disliked) you won’t be noticed. And it also means that most likely you don’t innovate. With Jessica Mignone, a Principal Product Designer at Intuit (and a former UX Designer at Google), we discuss innovation from the perspective of constant improvement, or, in other words, we say that: going back to the stuff we built and making it better - this is innovation. We note that people innovate their entire lives anyway, and they are not even aware of that. And we also talk about the importance of 20% projects as creative outlets for smart people. Who doesn’t want to improve their lives? If you look at self-help and productivity information, you will see it’s quite popular and growing. People want to improve. However, one of the biggest challenges people face is they try to do too much too fast. When you build up your improvement plan, you have a much better chance of success by taking small steps. You can learn more by visiting: http://youaresuccesslifecoach.com
One of the hardest things about undertaking a new challenge is not seeing improvement as fast as you want to. This applies to everything — from losing weight to creating an app to starting a business. We're all naturally gifted in different areas. A personal goal for me right now is losing weight.. But I'm not naturally gifted in fitness the way I am with software, where I can power through and succeed quickly. Even when I'm working hard, I don't see fast results on the scale. When you start to start to stall out in any challenge, you might have to adjust your expectations to be more realistic and change your mindset about progress. In my early days of starting a business, I had only two customers for a year. Seeing the growth was hard in that situation. When we can't see progress in a broad scale, we get frustrated. But if you could zoom in and see the minute amount of progress you make you could stay more positive. For example, if you create a new app, you might want thousands of new users in a week. But maybe you need to set a goal of one new user a week, realizing that you can still reach long term success even if your progress is slow. Focus on recognizing the tiny improvements and being encouraged with that. This will let you persevere longer in your challenges.
As you may have already heard, Erik has a goal to run 1,000 miles in 2019. In episode 239 of Journey to $100 Million, Erik talks about how small improvements over time can greatly advance your personal and business efforts. Currently, Erik is at the point where he feels comfortable running three to four miles every day. Recently, he did the math to see where he would be if he ran an extra quarter-mile every day. Taking the miles he had already run, and adding an extra quarter-mile every day, it turned out to be about an extra 40 miles overall! That is a significant improvement, for an insignificant addition to his daily routine. Small improvements multiplied by volume (or time) equal BIG results! This is not just with running, but in business as well. For example, the 1% rule: if you make a 1% improvement anywhere in your business over time, it multiplies out to greatly improve your company. If you make small changes on a constant basis, you will see significant improvements in your business, your life, and wherever you apply it! — Erik J. Welcome back to today's PTSD TV Monday Motivation episode!Today Brad and I talk about little wins and long term thinking. Recovering from PTSD is not going to happen overnight, it takes consistent effort over long periods of time. Most people with PTSD have the wrong mindset. They expect and hope to make short term miracle recoveries...and when that inevitably doesn't happen they break down. That's why focusing on the little wins and thinking long term is essential if you want to make a full recovery? The work is hard. But it's the most worthwhile thing you'll ever do! What I wanted to talk about today is constantly trying to improve and evolve as a business owner. There is always so much more out there for you to learn and if you think you've learned it all, you have already lost. Try to become marginally better every single day and over time you will see the positive results of this in your business.
Due to illness and travel, Jeffrey and Squirrel present one of their greatest hits of the past! *** Squirrel and Jeffrey look at a recent article by Luke Tomas on the "employee engagement industry" (we didn't even know it *was* an industry!) Feedback culture doesn't just happen. In startups feedback is rarely given focus from day one. So how can an established team nurture processes and attitudes towards feedback that make the difference between a desirable company and one you shouldn't touch with a bargepole? Feedback, and the culture surrounding it, is one of the biggest contributors to a company’s desirability, from a recruiting standpoint. But after some quick research, it occurred to me that the act of developing good feedback processes is almost always under-invested in, especially with early stage startups. Per Fragemann has made it his mission to improve feedback and feedback culture in business, with a business he started called Small Improvements.
HR Happy Hour 194 - Small Improvements Recorded Wednesday October 29, 2014 Hosts: Trish McFarlane, Steve Boese Guest: Linda Jonas This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, Steve and Trish were joined by Linda Jonas, International traveler, and Director of Marketing for Small Improvements,an HR technology provider of tools that provide a simpler, easy to use, and more engaging approach to performance management, workplace feedback, 360-degree reviews, and more. We talked about Linda's annual 6-week world tour where she meets with customers and partners, her Small Improvements colleagues, and attends events like the HR Technology Conference and the upcoming HRevolution (of which Small Improvements is a sponsor). Additionally, Linda shared some insights into emerging and ongoing trends in employee performance management, and the need for both software providers and organizations to keep these processes clear, easy to adopt, and valuable for employees, managers and organizations overall. Everyone seems to hate on Performance Management and one of the reasons is that the process has often been overengineered and over-complicated. Check out Small Improvements to get some insights into how you can change that in your organization, while improving (pardon the pun) both the process and the desired outcomes. This was a really fun show - thanks to Linda and to everyone at Small Improvements!
