“Every day you go through these mental battles — how do I keep going? You're in a sport where you don't just leave college and start making a million dollars. You just got to build yourself, almost by yourself.”My guest for today's episode is Sam Blaskowski. Not a ton of you probably knew his name before this weekend. At the Music City Track Carnival in Cleveland, Tennessee last Saturday, he ran 9.89 seconds in the 100m: a wind-legal personal best that shaved 0.16 off his previous mark of 10.05, making him the fastest American of 2026 so far, and putting him at number two in the world this season. He skipped the 9.90s entirely.Sam is 23 years old. He grew up in Wisconsin, went to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse — a Division III program where his grandparents live a mile from the stadium and both his parents went to school — and graduated without ever contemplating leaving for a Division I program. He has 11 individual NCAA D3 titles. He spent the off-season working at a small regional airport to save money for his move to Florida, where he now trains with Star Athletics under Dennis Mitchell alongside Kenny Bednarek, Sha'Carri Richardson, and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. This is his first season with the group. The headline that took over the internet is that he is now the fastest white man in history, breaking Christophe Lemaître's 9.92 from 2011. Sam's own take on what he'd rather people focus on: he's number two in the world right now. That's the story he wants told.In this conversation, recorded just 48 hours after the race, Sam walks us through the full arc: the soccer and swimming background, YMCA YouTube tutorials during COVID, and the steady year-over-year drops from 10.29 to 10.13 to 10.09 to 10.05 to 9.89. We also get into what his college coach Matt Gordy unlocked in him and what Star Athletics has done to fix the back half of his race.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavezGuest: Sam Blaskowski | @samblaskowskiProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSXENDURANCE: When you finish a hard workout, the work isn't actually done. Chris flies solo today, without Mitzi on this Monday, but still manages to keep it (mostly) on the sunny side! Today, on National Tartan Day, and the year’s 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence, we explore the fascinating history and linkage between our Declaration, and the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath, along with a special bonus surprise anniversary connection of the “Triumphal Entry” of Jesus Christ on Apr 6, 32 AD (10th of Nisan) spoken of in all four Gospels! If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. – John 8:36 KJV Triumphal Entry – in all four Gospels! Mat 21:1–11 Mar 11:1–10 Luk 19:28–40 Jhn 12:12–19 From the National Tartan Day Time and Date page: The Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed on April 6, 1320. The American Declaration of Independence was, in fact, modeled on this particular document. Almost half of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent. The US Senate Resolution on National Tartan Day was passed on March 20, 1998. From that point onward, National Tartan Day was designated as a day for all Americans, particularly those of Scottish descent, on April 6 each year. From the summary of John King Bellassai’s Two Declarations with a Common Purpose: The Link between 1320 and 1776: Tartan Day in the United States is April 6th, which is also the anniversary of the signing of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath. The significance of this date is the striking similarities in phrasing and intent between the Declaration of Arbroath and the Declaration of Independence. A key to understanding this link is the fact that the American Revolution came right on the heels of the Scottish Enlightenment. While Scottish immigrants were a small part of the general colonial population, their influence on the worldview held by the educated segment of the colonial population, most notably Thomas Jefferson was very influential. Several other key events including the fact that Jefferson's mother's family were of Scottish decent of one of the signers of the Declaration of Arbroath and his Scottish William & Mary professor William Small, whom Jefferson described as his mentor, most notably also played a role in the creation of the Declaration of Independence. To suppose them to have surrendered these in any other way than by equal rules and general consent was to suppose them idiots or madmen, whose acts were never binding. To suppose them surprised by fraud, or compelled by force, into any other compact, such fraud and such force could confer no obligation. Every man had a right to trample it under foot whenever he pleased. In short, he asserted these rights to be derived only from nature and the author of nature; that they were inherent, inalienable, and indefeasible by any laws, pacts, contracts, covenants, or stipulations, which man could devise. [x] John Adams, A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law – Teaching American History In a word, let every sluice of knowledge be opened and set a-flowing. The encroachments upon liberty in the reigns of the first James and the first Charles, by turning the general attention of learned men to government, are said to have produced the greatest number of consummate statesmen which has ever been seen in any age or nation. The Brookes, Hampdens, Vanes, Seldens, Miltons, Nedhams, Harringtons, Nevilles, Sidneys, Lockes, are all said to have owed their eminence in political knowledge to the tyrannies of those reigns. The prospect now before us in America, ought in the same manner to engage the attention of every man of learning, to matters of power and of right, that we may be neither led nor driven blindfolded to irretrievable destruction. Nothing less than this seems to have been meditated for us, by somebody or other in Great Britain. There seems to be a direct and formal design on foot, to enslave all America. This, however, must be done by degrees. The first step that is intended, seems to be an entire subversion of the whole system of our fathers, by the introduction of the canon and feudal law into America. The canon and feudal systems, though greatly mutilated in England, are not yet destroyed. Like the temples and palaces in which the great contrivers of them once worshipped and inhabited, they exist in ruins; and much of the domineering spirit of them still remains. The designs and labors of a certain society, to introduce the former of them into America, have been well exposed to the public by a writer of great abilities; and the further attempts to the same purpose, that may be made by that society, or by the ministry or parliament, I leave to the conjectures of the thoughtful. But it seems very manifest from the Stamp Act itself, that a design is formed to strip us in a great measure of the means of knowledge, by loading the press, the colleges, and even an almanac and a newspaper, with restraints and duties; and to introduce the inequalities and dependencies of the feudal system, by taking from the poorer sort of people all their little subsistence, and conferring it on a set of stamp officers, distributors, and their deputies. But I must proceed no further at present. The sequel, whenever I shall find health and leisure to pursue it, will be a “disquisition of the policy of the stamp act.” In the mean time, however, let me add, — These are not the vapors of a melancholy mind, nor the effusions of envy, disappointed ambition, nor of a spirit of opposition to government, but the emanations of a heart that burns for its country's welfare. No one of any feeling, born and educated in this once happy country, can consider the numerous distresses, the gross indignities, the barbarous ignorance, the haughty usurpations, that we have reason to fear are meditating for ourselves, our children, our neighbors, in short, for all our countrymen and all their posterity, without the utmost agonies of heart and many tears. Tartan Day has expanded into an entire Tartan Week in New York City and Angus, and into multi-day events in some other locations, including Washington, DC. The name Scotland Week has also been promoted in Scotland. The events typically have parades of pipe bands, Highland dancing, and other Scottish-themed activities. In 1998, the efforts of the coalition and the Caledonian Foundation (led then by JoAnne Phipps), with the legislative sponsorship of Senator Trent Lott, resulted in United States Senate Resolution No. 155 (introduced March 6, 1998) to adopt April 6 as National Tartan Day. The resolution passed March 20, 1998, “to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States”; it also referred to the predominance of Scots among the Founding Fathers of the United States and claimed that the American Declaration of Independence was “modelled on” the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath. The now quasi-official National Tartan Day was held annually thereafter; The Washington Times reported in 2000 on the event, by which time it was already growing into a three-day affair in Washington, DC. When equity markets grow concentrated and expensive, the real risk isn't volatility — it's failing to diversify before the cycle turns. For years, global real estate has sat in what Pierre Daillie calls “the penalty box” — weighed down by rising rates, skepticism, and falling valuations. Yet beneath the headlines, fundamentals never broke. In this episode of Insight Is Capital, Pierre sits down with Dennis Mitchell, CEO and CIO of Starlight Capital, to unpack why global real estate may be one of the most misunderstood — and potentially asymmetric — opportunities in today's market. Mitchell argues that the most important change in global real estate “has nothing to do with global real estate.” Instead, it's about opportunity cost. With the S&P 500 trading north of 24x earnings and the “Mag 7” representing more than 30% of the index, investors face rising concentration risk — amplified by passive flows. Meanwhile, publicly traded REITs in North America have traded at discounts of up to 30% to net asset value, even as supply-demand fundamentals strengthen across key sectors like seniors housing, data centers, industrial, and cell towers. Mitchell breaks down real estate returns into three drivers — yield, growth, and multiple expansion — and explains why today's combination of 4–6% yields, 3–7% internal growth, and potential mean reversion creates a compelling setup. From demographic tailwinds in seniors housing to AI-driven infrastructure demand for data centers and towers, this conversation reframes real estate not as a rate-sensitive trade — but as a disciplined, supply-demand story hiding in plain sight.

US Olympic Marathon Trials champion Fiona O'Keeffe joins us at 55:03 to break down her 4th-place finish at the NYC Marathon, how she rebounded from Olympic heartbreak, and what it's like training under Amy and Alistair Cragg. She opens up about her workouts, recovery from injury, and her long-term goals for 2026 and beyond. Before that, we dive into a wild week in track and field: USADA quietly banned Marvin Bracy, the 2022 World 100 m silver medalist, for nearly four years after he provided "substantial assistance" in a federal doping investigation involving the AIU and the DEA. The story first broke through former sprinter Rae Edwards (RaesTake), who claimed Bracy had been serving a secret suspension and said Bracy's then-coach Dennis Mitchell tipped off the authorities after Bracy confided in him about using a PED. The case has sparked major questions about transparency, informants, and how far USADA should go in keeping suspensions hidden. Plus, the IOC bans males from women's sports, Conner and Kylie Mantz headline the Two Cities Marathon, Elise Cranny may be training with Keely Hodgkinson in the UK, and much more.

Here are 3 big things you need to know—   One —  U.S. stock futures are plunging, giving an indication of what could be expected today on Wall Street.  Dow Jones Industrial, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures all fell roughly four percent Sunday.  The Dow saw back-to-back losses of over 15-hundred points for the first time ever last week, while the S&P took a six-percent drop Friday, the worst since March 2020.    Two ----   President Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday for talks about new U.S. tariffs.  Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday that he had invited Netanyahu for discussions.  The talks are also expected to address Israel's war in Gaza.  Netanyahu's visit could mark the first in-person attempt by a foreign leader to try to negotiate a deal on tariffs.   And number three —    Actor Jay North, who played Dennis Mitchell in the in the 1960s sitcom "Dennis the Menace" has died at 73.  North had been fighting cancer for a number of years, passing away at his home in Florida on Sunday.  North also appeared in other shows such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Lassie, General Hospital and The Simpsons.

Send us a textWhen pondering, debating, writing or planning our focus tends fall to the extremes; this or that, which means we ignore the stuff in-between. It probably traces back to some survival mechanism our ancestors developed to determine what foods were safe to eat, what passages were too risky to travel, where we might be safe to sleep at night, and what hours of the day to do which behaviors. But like the ego, which we've discussed in past episodes, maybe it's time for a human upgrade. In fact, maybe the biggest breakthroughs in humanity lie in that juicy in-between space. On a recent trip to Chicago with my mom, our in between time was where the magic happened. Forgotten stories from her childhood and young adulthood were shared. As we rode in the back seat of an Uber to the ballpark, or home from a museum, or on our way to a river boat tour, well, that's when, with the city scrolling past the windows, my mother's deep memories came forward. Dennis Mitchell, CEO, CIO at Starlight Capital joins us this episode to discuss various topics including the impact of interest rates, the potential for rate cuts, portfolio construction for the period ahead - which will be marked by the persistent threat of inflation and higher rates for longer, the importance of proper pension-like diversification, and the rising risks of geopolitical instability, and authoritarianism, and ensuing political risk ahead. He expresses optimism about the long-term trends in private real estate, infrastructure, and equity markets. He also highlights the need for education and due diligence in investing in these asset classes. However, he expresses concern about the rise of authoritarianism and the erosion of democracy, which could have negative consequences for global markets and standards of living. We explore the current investment climate and the need for a shift in portfolio construction. Dennis Mitchell emphasizes the importance of considering and adding private assets and alternative asset classes with the objective of building resilient portfolios. Mitchell highlights the need for a diversified approach that goes beyond traditional 60-40 portfolios. We discuss the benefits of adding private equity, private real estate, infrastructure, commodities, and private credit. He emphasizes the critical need for enhanced financial education and the role of financial institutions in providing innovative investment solutions. We also get into the misconceptions about private assets and the importance of understanding the risks and returns associated with different asset classes.TakeawaysInvestors should consider diversifying their portfolios with private real estate, infrastructure, and equity assets to replicate the strategies of large pension plans. The Canadian market has recently opened up to alternative and real asset investments, providing more options for investors.Investors need to understand the benefits of diversification and the importance of long-term returns.Geopolitical risks, such as conflicts in the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine tensions, can undermine political stability and impact global markets. The rise of authoritarianism poses a threat to democracy, free markets, and innovation. The world has become smaller and more dangerous, with the potential for catastrophic consequences if leaders abdicate their roles or fail to address emerging challenges. The investment climate is influenced by geopolitical events and economic cycles, which create opportunities to allocate capital to different sectors and geographies.Traditional 60-40 portfolios are outdated, and investors should consider allocating more to alternative asset classes.Private assets, such as private equity, private real estate, infrastructure, commodities, and private credit, offer opportunities for long-term returns and diversification.Financial education is crucial for investors to understand different asset classes and make informed investment decisions.Financial institutions have a responsibility to provide innovative investment solutions and be accurate stewards of the economy.ChaptersIntroduction and SettingThe Impact of Interest Rates and Rate CutsThe Canadian Market and InflationThe Importance of Diversification and Investing in Private AssetsThe Risks of Authoritarianism and Erosion of DemocracyThe Impact of Politics and Populism on Global MarketsThe Danger of Geopolitical Conflicts and AuthoritarianismThe World's Smaller and More Dangerous NatureThe Current Investment ClimateThe Decline of Traditional 60-40 PortfoliosThe Role of Financial Education and InstitutionsWhere to find Dennis Mitchell & Starlight CapitalDennis Mitchell on LinkedinStarlight CapitalStarlight Capital's Thought Leadership

Happy Juneteenth! Also known as Freedom Day, National Independence Day, Emancipation Day (TX), or Black Independence Day, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the confederate states. Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, violent exploitation of enslaved African Americans continued in many confederate states, including Texas. On June 19th, 1865, the Union Army established authority over Texas and enforced the emancipation of slaves. The following year, the first "Juneteenth" celebration was organized to recognize freedom from slavery in the U.S. In this PodCASP episode, you will hear an engaging conversation between CASP Board Member and PodCASP host, Naa Ameley Garrido, and some of her closest friends and family: Dr. Nadielka 'Nadi' Bishop, Dr. Erica Foh, Dennis Mitchell, MBA, PMP, and Lamley Lawson (student at Yale University School of Medicine). Topics include how and when they first learned about Juneteenth, their efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, plus some practical tips drawn from their experiences that listeners can easily implement in their workplaces. Our guests share their personal experiences with ongoing systemic racism in medicine, law enforcement, education, and other social structures. Neurodiverse BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) individuals, clinicians, administrators, and family members experience similar challenges as they attempt to access or provide quality ABA services in their communities.

Episode #30: Dennis the Menace - “Dennis Goes to the Movies” Original Release Date: November 16, 2015 Trouble-prone and mischievous Dennis Mitchell from Hank Ketcham's comic strip Dennis the Menace landed himself a sitcom in the fall of 1959. Dennis' shenanigans such as burying a garden hose in the backyard and trying to repair a table leg but only causing it to come crashing down was deemed wild for the late 50s, so the writers had to tone the character down a bit. Which brings us to episode of A Very Special Podcast, when Patrick and Kat watch “Dennis Goes to the Movie.” This is the one where Dennis sneaks out of the house at night to go see a Glenn Ford picture and also happens to be the very first episode of Dennis the Menace.
